Bernard Egan MOTORING

H

elen Rive remembers it just like it was yesterday. She was 14 years old, growing up in Invercargill. Three local chaps each owned a rather special sports car, and what’s more each of them also had a motorbike. Helen was impressed and decided she would like a motorbike or a sports car. Or maybe both. In time Helen would end having both, starting with the motorbikes. Savings from after school work gave Helen the where with all to buy her first motorbike, a Honda 125. There was one slight complication. Helen hadn’t got around to telling her parents, who on discovering her purchase three months later “persuaded” Helen she should sell the bike. A couple of years later, now aged 16 and

beginning her nursing training, Helen bought her second bike. Another Honda; this time a 175 model. Her biking experience included riding her brother’s 1100cc Ducati between Invercargill and Roxburgh; quite an achievement for a young lady on a very big bike. Helen says she enjoyed that ride, with her brother as her pillion passenger, which was reassuring because the Ducati was very powerful and quite heavy. Ultimately Helen decided motorcycling and Southland weather weren’t exactly a perfect match, so she bought a car. While Helen’s first cars were needed for normal everyday transport, the idea of owning a sports car was never far away in her mind. A few years later the chance came to own one, when Helen was able to purchase a rather special MGB V8. More sports cars followed, including an

MG F, a Nissan 350 ZX and a Jaguar. All special cars, which Helen liked and enjoyed, but the new model Mazda MX-5 caught her eye – and she was hooked. Helen went to look at an MX-5, but unfortunately the saleswoman proved indifferent to the deal and having decided to sell the Jaguar, Helen took a better trade-in option and purchased a Toyota 86. A very good car, but not a convertible, and Helen knew in her heart of hearts it wasn’t quite what she wanted. By chance, about four months ago the opportunity arose to buy an MX-5. Finished in Soul Red (Helen – “red goes faster!”) with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a fully automated retractable hardtop, it had everything going for it. So it was back in touch with the dealer, but this time dealing with a salesman who made things much easier. In fact a quite amazing deal was done.

Helen bought the MX-5 sight unseen and without driving it, the salesman likewise trading the Toyota 86 on the same basis. Helen says the MX-5 is a brilliant car, which combines a very responsive motor with comfort, practicality with fun. As well as liking the colour, Helen thinks Mazda have come up with some neat styling, such as featuring the body colour in the interior where the cabin is compact and everything – the steering wheel, instruments and gear lever – are all perfectly positioned. So far the MX-5 has provided enjoyable motoring on some club runs and to the West Coast. Helen says: “I sit behind the wheel of the MX-5, beside me is my co-driver’s seat, there isn’t a seat behind me. I have the option of open top motoring, I know I’m in a true sports car”.

Fast. Ferociously fast.

M

cLaren Automotive has revealed its new Ultimate Series roadster, the McLaren Elva. As the brand’s first open-cockpit road car, the Elva adds a new dimension to the range-topping Ultimate Series lineage. Like its McLaren P1TM, McLaren Senna and Speedtail predecessors, volume of the new McLaren Elva will be strictly limited: just 399 are being offered for customer order. The Elva name celebrates the renowned Bruce McLaren-designed M1A and McLaren-Elva M1A [Mk I], M1B [Mk II] and M1C [Mk III] of the 1960s. Produced as ‘customer’ versions of the innovative and exciting Group 7 McLaren race cars, the McLaren-Elva sportscars embodied many of the pioneering design and engineering principles that are integral to the McLaren road cars produced today. The new McLaren Elva is a ferociously fast open-cockpit car; an extreme

two-seater with a bespoke carbon fibre chassis and body but no roof, no windscreen and no side windows. With every sensory input heightened, this is a car that exists to provide unparalleled driving pleasure on road or track. A 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged McLaren V8 from the same family of engines that powers the McLaren Senna and Senna GTR combines with the lightest vehicle weight1 of any road car produced by McLaren Automotive to give the superlight new Ultimate Series roadster truly breathtaking performance across the board, with extraordinary levels of acceleration, agility and driver feedback. The appearance of the McLaren Elva is as striking and unique as the driving experience. The low nose and pronounced front fender peaks provide visual drama and at the same time enhance forward vision. Large, carbon fibre rear fenders flow from the front of the door to the rear deck, while the height of the twin rear butt-resses is minimised by using a deployable

he reveal of the all-new, all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E takes place in Los Angeles on Monday at 3pm NZDT. Ford will then open the order banks for customers in North America and Europe immediately following the reveal. Another cool thing about the all-new Ford Mustang Mach-E. Ford is opening up access to America’s largest electric vehicle charging network through FordPass. Customer will be able to access more than 12,000 places to recharge with 35,000 plugs and more to come.

roll-over protection system. “The McLaren Elva is a true Ultimate roadster; it exists purely for the pleasure of driving, to deliver an enthralling and immersive experience born from the ultimate connection between the car, the driver and the elements. “The lightest road car we’ve ever built at McLaren Automotive, the Elva is incredibly agile and ferociously fast, its 815PS twin-turbocharged V8 engine providing breathtaking performance that heightens every sense, says Andy Palmer, Vehicle Line Director – Ultimate Series, McLaren Automotive. Carbon forms the core of the braking system which is the most advanced ever fitted to a McLaren road car. Each sintered carbon ceramic disc measures 390mm and takes significantly longer to produce than a conventional carbon ceramic disc, but the resultant material is much stronger and has improved thermal conductivity. This allows the front brake discs in particular to be reduced in size, benefit-

ting unsprung mass while still maintaining performance. Cooling requirements are lessened, reducing the brake ducting needed, which further reduces weight and improves aerodynamic efficiency. Such braking performance is essential because of the performance delivered by the 815PS, 800Nm 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged McLaren V8 that powers the Elva. From the same family of engines that powers the McLaren Senna and Senna GTR, it features a flat-plane crankshaft, dry-sump lubrication and lightweight connecting camshafts, rods and pistons that reduce mass in the powertrain. Power is directed to the Elva’s rear wheels through a seven-speed seamless-shift gearbox, and working in conjunction with a launch control function, the performance is breathtaking: 100km/h from a standstill (0-62mph) is reached in less than three seconds, while the McLaren Elva is quicker than the McLaren Senna to 200km/h (0-124mph) at just 6.7 seconds.
