T
he ever-present Honda Jazz has always been a popular kid in the sub-compact classroom, but it’s hard to ignore that its rival set is evolving at a rapid rate. The latest generation Swift is built on a much newer set of bones. An all-new Yaris is landing next year. The Rio is packed with tech. But, the Jazz still retains a loyal fan base. And it’s clear to see why. This Jazz, looking much like the last one, represents an update. The changes are mild, but well warranted. At its core it’s mainly a tech and spec update. Entry-level models – priced from $22,990 plus on-roads – come with Hill Start Assist, Emergency Brake Assist (fully blown Autonomous Emergency Braking is sadly absent), and most importantly of all a new touchscreen infotainment system. This is the jewel in the crown of the 2020 Jazz update; a touchscreen that aims to make good for the infotainment sins of the past.
Sized either as a 6.2in or 6.8in system depending on the model you select, the Pioneer-sourced unit sports a reverse camera, voice control, and Apple CarPlay as standard. The rest of our Jazz’s cabin reveals the other notable 2020 update – splashes of orange. Each model from the RS above this dosage of visual Vitamin C. The addition might sound a little corny (or fruity?) on paper, but it does the trick in revamping a relatively dark cabin. Orange stitching proudly frames the leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear-knob, plastic highlights feature on the door cards and passenger-side dash, and patches of cross-hatched orange fabric on the seats and doors weave it all together. The RS comes with the added bonus of re-calibrated steering and sports suspension, which it uses to good effect without compromising ride quality.

Charging into history
B
rent Sutton believes his Chrysler Valiant Charger is a milestone car. “Todd Motors built only 98 cars. It was focused on Mitsubishi then, we had the fuel crisis and New Zealand’s love of big six cylinders was ending as the Japanese took hold.” Mitsubishi correspondence confirmed his car was in the final batch of 10 built. “They never had a build date, only a finalise date, and Mitsubishi confirmed they were never issued in sequence.” Paperwork also confirms: “This was the last Charger finalised, on August 24, 1976.” He’s had a few heated debates about that detail, but it’s a bit academic, as it seems this is the only VIN from the last 10 that’s still on the road. So, last Charger it is. Sutton bought it 11 years ago. “My dad was a J-Force vet, and when he returned after the end of occupation he became one of the early bonded licensed motor vehicle dealers.” “We grew up with American cars. Dad acquired the PMs’ cars – we had Norman Kirk’s, Rob Muldoon’s. He’d then on-sell. “We grew up in Chev Impalas, Ford Limiteds, Pontiac Parisienne, the mainstay of the ministerial fleet. Occasionally, rarely, a Chrysler-produced coupe came through and the build, the quality, was better than GM or Ford.” So, as an adult, Sutton focused on Chrysler but he has also been the owner of a 1953 Willys Jeep station wagon and a 1947 Windsor. “My wife was pregnant, and I wanted a classic that would be good for family;
something a bit safer than a car with suicide doors. He liked the shape of the Charger. “It’s iconic, and I recall seeing them as I grew up. I was looking for one of these and found a genuine one-owner, 70,000km one in the South Island, but I hadn’t sold the other car.” He found this one online. “She was pretty rough.” He had to restore the • doors, Latestbonnet faceliftand boot, and give it a full• paint and panel. The 15,000km paint was the only job didn’t do himself. • he2.8L Turbo Diesel He also had to rebuild the engine. The wheels were factory steel, and the car now has Dodge alloys off a genuine
American Dodge Charger. “Five-slot jelly-bean wheels from the period,” says Sutton. He upgraded the manifold and carb for better performance. There are some nice details in the car, like the flip-up vanity in the glovebox, and the hard-to-get curved mudflaps and rear window louvres. There’s a large steering wheel but no power steer. “It doesn’t need it, it only weighs 1.4 tons,” he says. The car is propelled by a 4.3-litre 186kW engine that he says isn’t thirsty. “Well, I run a dual-barrel Holley carb
with two spring systems, so for the second barrel to kick in you have to push the accelerator hard.” He says it’s a very free-revving engine – it certainly sounds relaxed around town, it’s idling at 1000rpm in fourth at 50km/h, so he’s usually in third below 55km/h – but change down in the four-speed manual, press the accelerator pedal hard, and you can feel a cough as the second carb kicks in and it’s suddenly a different, and far more aggressive beast. Would he sell it? “Only at the right price! But I’ve got no plans to, unless someone makes me an offer I can’t refuse ...”

Macan – a true sports car
P
orsche completes the Macan series with a distinctly sporty model. The new Macan GTS launches with a powerful engine, performance-oriented chassis, characteristic design and enhanced equipment. The 2.9-litre V6 biturbo engine delivers 280 kW (380 HP) – an increase of 15 kW (20 HP) compared with the predecessor model. Combined with the newly adapted PDK dual-clutch transmission and the optional Sport Chrono package, the Macan GTS can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, three tenths faster than before. It has a top speed of 261 km/h. Among other things, the new member of Porsche’s compact SUV family has earned the abbreviation GTS, which stands for Gran Turismo Sport, due to its outstanding driving dynamics. The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) damping control system has been specially tuned. The chassis has also been lowered by 15 millimetres for greater lateral dynamics. Adaptive air suspension is optionally available with chassis lowering by a further 10 millimetres. Combined with the standard 20-inch RS Spyder Design wheels and the generously sized cast iron brakes (360 x 36 millimetres at the front, 330 x 22 millimetres at the rear), the
new Macan GTS impresses with the agility and responsiveness of a true sports car. As an option, deceleration can be further improved by means of the Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB) with tungsten carbide coating or the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB). Acoustically, the standard sports exhaust system specifically adapted to the GTS accentuates the driving pleasure in the new Macan GTS. A 2.9-litre V6 engine is at the heart of the sound experience. Its Central Turbo Layout, with two turbochargers arranged in the inner V of the engine, allows particularly direct re-sponsiveness. The maximum torque of 520 Nm (plus 20 Nm) is available over a wide range from 1750 to 5000 rpm. The new Macan GTS also emphasises its exceptional sporty status visually. The standard Sport Design package with new front and rear trim and striking side skirts lends the car a characteristic appearance. The front apron and front section are characterised by black painted elements – a distinguishing feature of all Porsche GTS models. The LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) and the three-dimensional rear lights with LED light bar are also darkened. The red brake calipers and the trim strips in high-gloss black also emphasise the high-performance appearance.
