Home Decorating

Light & colour the key Do you have a room at home that you think is too small to make anything out of? Home decorating experts never give in to that argument.

Semling recommends painting doors, window frames and bevelled edges a pure white colour. If you’re planning on using a colourful wallpaper try painting a narrow white line on the walls directly below the ceiling. If you have chosen a primary colour then you can expect that to make a big difference to the way the room will appear.

“A small room is relative, says interior designer Ines Wrusch. “A room is only too small when you plan to use it for something big. Because in most cases it’s impossible to alter a room’s dimensions you will need to fall back on a few tricks to get the desired look.

“A dominant red colour will make itself felt very present in a room, says Braem. “It’s a hectic colour and tends to push aside other colours in a room. Red should be used sparingly in small spaces.

“The most effective thing you can do is exploit optical illusions, says home design expert Katharina Semling. Well-chosen decorations, appropriate furnishings and clever lighting can help.

Under no circumstances should a small room be packed full of decorations and knick-knacks

But the most important factor to pay attention to is colour. “Small rooms look bigger if they’re painted in bright colours, says Professor Harald Braem from the Institute of Colour Psychology in Germany. “Just as you can make a high ceiling appear lower by painting it a dark shade, you can also achieve the opposite effect with a lighter tone. White and pastel shades tend to make a room look larger than it is.

In many instances the reason a room appears small is due to its design. Ines Wrusch illustrates the problem using an example of a bathroom that has been built in an old apartment: such bathrooms tend to be narrow and thus have disproportionately high walls compared to the ground space they occupy.

Once again colour can also be of help. “By painting a dark blue colour on the walls above a height of 2.40 metres you will achieve the same effect. That’s because dark colours make a “heavy impression and give the optical illusion of the room expanding.

Another aspect to consider is furnishings. “Under no circumstances should a small room be packed full of decorations and knick-knacks, says Semling. “But a very spartan interior is also the wrong way to go.

Curtains made of lightweight materials will also make things roomier. “They don’t steal light and they can embellish a space, says Semling.

“At ďŹ rst glance they appear to give a light look but because they’re transparent you can see the legs and everything that’s beneath the table.â€?

Large furniture and objects that go over the eyeline should be avoided. “Make every effort to concentrate on the lower regions of a room, says Semling. “But if you have to use a tall cupboard then it should be as brightly coloured at the top as possible.

That only serves to disturb the optical harmony of a room.

“No matter if you use it to illuminate a single wall or the entire ceiling, it will make a room seem bigger. So, light and colour are the keys to altering a room’s appearance.

And ďŹ nally lighting can help determine a room’s apparent size. Semling advises creating islands of light. “That will allow you to customise a room’s structure into separate areas.â€?

Bareness is the worst way to achieve a bigger look. “A small empty space usually looks even smaller than one that is furnished and has wallpaper, Semling says.

Interior Design

Designing your nursery DARE TO BE DIFFERENT Decorating a room to become a baby nursery is an exciting time, but as many experienced designers and real estate agents alike will tell you, don’t go overboard on babying every single thing in the room. While you will want the area to be stimulating for the baby’s development, it also needs to be a calm environment for mum and dad, as during that all-important first year, you will be spending a lot of time in there, all hours of the day and night. From a practical point of view, your wee bundle of joy won’t be a tiny baby forever. Soon the room will be re-decorated for a school child and then later a teenager, so it pays to be smart with your choices of the bigticket decorating items, such as carpet, window dressings and wall cover. Also if you need to move in the near future, think of how the room will present to prospective buyers. Not everyone in the market will have a

baby, and even if they do, the likelihood that their styling taste will be the same as yours is minimal. So before you grab the paintbrush to start plastering the walls in rainbows and butterflies, consider this practical approach to nursery decoration, which will save you money in the long-term, and create a more desirable home when it comes time to sell.

Choosing primary colours will make the rest of the nursery a breeze

Most mums begin thinking about nursery design as soon as they find out that they are pregnant, and often even earlier than that, but now that your little nugget of love is growing, it’s possible to be overwhelmed by the vast range of options available. What colours are stimulating for the baby’s development? Is Hello Kitty fashionable or tacky? Do I have to go blue for a boy or pink for a girl?

To help you separate the on-trend from the tired, we have gathered sensible yet stunning design options, sweeping nurseries across the country right now, to help inspire while maintaining sophistication and salability in your home.

LOOK UP! To keep the walls neutral and sophisticated, consider adding your pop of colour on the ceiling, with bold stripes or a playful pattern. It’s more affordable to decorate the ceiling than all four walls, and also easy to revert back to normal when it comes time to re-decorate or sell the home. Choosing primary colours will make the rest of the nursery a breeze to decorate, and is also very stimulating for baby’s learning. Think bright yellow stripes or spots for a girl or deep blue or red for a boy. By keeping the walls and carpet neutral, you can now make features out of artwork, toys and furniture in the room.

GO 3D Depth and texture not only creates stunning design features for your nursery, but it also increases your baby’s capacity to learn. Instead of a

simple poster, consider creating your own artwork where you glue ABC blocks or fridge magnet numbers to a chalkboard. Instead of flat decals of butterflies, birds, bears or flowers, give the look more depth and texture by sticking 3D versions to the wall. Such as origami birds made from different coloured paper, or mirrored butterflies. Teddy bears made from fuzzy felt or bright artificial sunflowers. Choose your colours to match your feature ceiling or a feature rug in the room, but don’t overdo the effect. Restrict your 3D wall decorations to one wall only for added impact.

GO GLAM Who said a nursery had to be pastels and ducks…or owls…or bears for that matter? A glamourous nursery can be just as stimulating for baby’s development, and the design inspiration may just last through the ages with a few minor tweaks, although mostly suitable if you know you are having a girl. Pretty and chic, a simple palette which is easy to embellish with glitz. Start with black and white and add your feature pops of excitement from there. Go bold with your feature colour, such as lime green or deep pink.

Interior Design

Think a feature wall of glittering silver sparkle stars, a drop crystal light fitting that showers the room in rainbows when the light hits it during the day, a glamourous feature chair in hot pink, comfortable enough for you to spend multiple feeding hours snuggled up on it, a chic black cot, a fluffy black rug and mirror decals on the opposite side of the room to the sparkle silver stars.

Feature wall paper is now being created as self-adhesive and temporary, so can be easily changed as your child’s personal taste develops. If you love the design, so will your wee bundle of joy, and with bright pops of vivid colour, sparkles, texture and movement, it’s perfect for baby’s development.

A glamourous nursery can be just as stimulating for baby’s development

They don’t say that being a parent is hard work for nothing. To truly enjoy the space with your child, don’t forget to include practicalities that will help to make being mum or dad just that little bit easier.

PRACTICAL WORK SPACE

Don’t forget the big comfy rocking chair, you’ll be spending many, many

hours in it settling your wee one back to sleep. Consider mood lighting or two different lighting solutions. One bright during change time, and a softer one for when you don’t want to wake bubs up.

Consider constructing or buying a desk with multiple storage cubes and drawers attached. Very handy while bubs is little, and then can convert into a study desk as they start school. An organised and clutter-free room will help you to feel less stressed after a long day of tears and tantrums too.

Treat the nursery like you would the rest of your home; if you love modern design, go with it

Above all have fun with the decorating of your nursery. Treat the nursery like you would the rest of your home; if you love modern design, go with it. Don’t feel the need to fit some oldfashioned criteria or other’s idea of what a nursery should be.

Remember to allow for plenty of room for your change table, with your storage of accessories close at hand.

You will be the one spending the most time in there, so create a space that you will love to be in.

House hunting tips

Finding a family-friendly home As a parent, you want to give your children the very best, but this can be difficult when moving to a new home is concerned. Instead of just finding an affordable place where you can rest your head, you’ll need to step outside the box to find a neighbourhood and a house that will become a home, which is not just good, but great for your children. The location of your home can be just as important as the dwelling itself. Not only is a safe neighbourhood important for children, who don’t always make the best choices, but a good school is conducive to raising well-informed and educated adults. There are a number of factors that you and your family should take into consideration when selecting the area in which you would like to live, including schools, parks, medical facilities and access to other recrea-

tional activities. It pays to be diligent and research the suburb of the town of your specific interest. Try to take into consideration the community’s growth potential and future outlook. If it is an area that a lot of people are moving away from, take into consideration the possibility of local facilities, including the school, closing down.

Don’t be scared to knock on a couple of doors to get a feel for the neighbours.

forget to look at the long-term education possibilities for your children. This allows you to investigate an area thoroughly to see if it meets with the needs of your family. Taking a drive around near-by streets will give you excellent clues as to what the neighbourhood is like. Children’s toys, trampolines, bicycles will indicate if there are many other families on the street, or you might see groups of mother’s walking by pushing strollers. Don’t be scared to knock on a couple of doors to get a feel for the neighbours. You’ll know the history of the street in no-time, and if the recipients of your door-knock are rude, then perhaps it’s not the type of neighbourhood you want to raise your children in anyway.

If you are intending on making this your home for the long-term, don’t

This is also a great time to traverse the neighborhood and try the restau-

rants, shops and community activities. Make an appointment to visit the local childhood education facilities and see if it is the type of environment that would be stimulating for your child. Even if your child is only at pre-school now, visit the primary school to ensure it provides the facilities that you desire for your child’s development. Cost is another important factor when moving, and the correct mix of salary to expense ratio can signify if the area is right for you. After you have nailed down a specific area that you feel is the best fit for your family, it’s time to look at the available properties and see which one fills the majority of the tick boxes. Remember no one home is likely to fulfil every hope and desire you have, so focus on the points that are essential to you, and don’t get hung

up on small details that can easily be changed. The next logical step is to ďŹ gure out what tops your list of essential features, and what’s less of a priority.

and go seek are much more fun when there is a large space to run around in, and it’s safer than sending your children to the nearby park.

Online real estate services make it simple to narrow down your choices, and taking a virtual tour can be as simple as the click of a button.

A large-sized yard is generally the best way to make a positive long-term investment

However, a family home should be more than aesthetically pleasing, and selecting something that will be a wise investment should be an important factor in your decision making process. A large-sized yard is generally the best way to make a positive longterm investment when it comes to buying a home, but also it gives your children a safe-haven to grow and play in. Backyard cricket, spotlight and hide

A well-fenced section should be a priority also, but not a deal-breaker, as this can easily be resolved at a later stage. A quiet street is an advantage, as not only will it make falling asleep easier, but when the tennis ball gets hit over the fence, it’s less dangerous

for your children to go and retrieve it. Inside the home, consider the spaciousness of each area. While young children might not have a problem with sharing a room, there will deďŹ nitely be problems once each one wants their own independence. To keep bedrooms tidier, it is handy to set aside a separate room as a child’s play area, or den. It can be the area where your children can play musical instruments, play their video games, build blocks and even get a little messy with paint. If the toys and art supplies are kept out of the bedroom, children ďŹ nd it much easier to keep their rooms clean, and it becomes a better environment to study in with less distraction. For the beneďŹ t of the cook in the house, consider purchasing a prop-

erty with a large kitchen, with plenty of bench space and storage. When you’ve reached the stage when you’re cooking dinner, baking cookies for a school event and making the children’s lunches for the following day, you soon become thankful for the additional space. Take safety into consideration and put yourself in the shoes of your child. Floor to ceiling windows and doors might look fantastic, but how will you prevent your child from running into them? As your search continues, remember that there’s no perfect place, but by sorting your priorities early, you’re more likely to ďŹ nd one that best-suits your family’s needs. Best of luck in ďŹ nding your home sweet home in a family-friendly neighbourhood.

Home Heating

Welcoming warmth By Amanda Wright

FINISHINGS A large percentage of your home’s heat is lost through your windows, especially if they are not double glazed. Using heavier curtains will not only help to make a home feel a lot cosier; they also help to stop heat escaping. Curtains which extend below the window frame will insulate your windows and help keep the warmth in. Carpet can be an expensive addition, but definitely worth consideration for long-term warmth benefits. As a cheaper alternative, a thick rug can offer similar insulation properties and feel nicer underfoot on a chilly morning. Concentrate on the rooms of your home that you use and heat most often and place a rug that covers most of the floor in these areas. Woolen is best, and as with carpet selection, the thicker or denser the weave, the better. If you want to keep wooden floors and tiles, look into the options now available for underfloor heating. More options are entering the market each year. Sealing gaps around doors and windows is one of the easiest, cheapest, and most effective ways to warm up your home. Place weatherstripping around loose doors and windows. If you still notice a draft beneath your door after you’ve installed weatherstripping, a rolled up towel or “door snake” can further block drafts.

With cooler months approaching, there’s no better time than now to put your home’s ability to heat itself under the microscope.

INSULATE Insulation is important to make any home warmer, but to do it all in one hit can be an expensive exercise. Start small, and begin by wrapping and plugging anything you can. An affordable place to start is by concentrating on maintaining the heat in your hot water pipes and cylinder. A hot water cylinder wrap is available from hardware stores for around $60 and is an effective way

to keep the cylinder from losing too much heat. Wrap external hot water pipes with insulation tape to reduce the heat loss from your hot water tank to the taps. It can be bought inexpensively from your local hardware store. Insulating your walls may be an expensive option, so a good place to start is the ceiling. A well-insulated house can use almost half the energy for heating and cooling, compared to a non-insulated

home, which means that insulation pays for itself in cheaper electricity bills in as little as one to two years.

For effective insulation, be sure that the insulation doesn’t have gaps inbetween it when installed, and make sure it is the recommended thickness to prevent heat escaping. If your home heating is ineffective, or costing you too much, then look into whether the source of the heating is the issue. A few changes made over the next few months will help to keep you feeling warmer during the bitter cold of winter.
