Challenges, resilience and confidence

George Morris Farmers are remaining resilient and confident in the face of tough dairy and commodity prices. Let’s be realistic, the past 18 months have been a huge shake up for farmers, especially dairy farmers and those whose businesses rely on growing feed for dairy stock. However, the flow-on effects have been seen through all classes of farming as well as most agriculturalbased businesses. As bad as this downturn in dairy pricing has been we believe there has been a silver lining. It has forced the industry to dial back, it has opened the eyes of farmers to realise

that we are at the mercy of the markets and especially China. It has meant people have taken a step back, looked hard at their running costs, stock numbers and debt/equity ratios; re-evaluated and adjusted accordingly. People are having to farm with viability and not productivity in mind. Latest Real Estate New Zealand (REINZ) data shows total volumes and values of farms sold in 2015 were slightly lower than those recorded for 2014 but the rural property sector, across the board, is cyclical. Just as the residential market is. Again Mid Canterbury has showed no sign of a drop, but more of a plateau in land values with strong enquiry and sales in both current and previous listings. Bayley’s is still fielding strong enquiry from offshore syndicates, as well as good local interest across all classes of land. The next 18 to 24 months will be a critical time in the New Zealand agricultural industry, however, it’s not all bad.

Get the right carpet for your home So you need to replace your wellworn carpet - but where do you start? With so many colour and texture variations, finding the floor covering that best matches your needs can be like finding a needle in a haystack. For example, do you want a plush carpet that promises to be soft and inviting? High traffic areas suit Berber carpets, whereas formal rooms not used often could have a plusher finish. Once you've worked out what kind of feel you want your carpet to have set a budget and stick to it. Wool carpets might represent the best in quality, but they also come with a higher price tag whereas nylon and other synthetics feel similar to wool but cost a lot less. Don't be afraid to shop around, and make sure to request separate pricing for materials and installation so you can make a direct comparison to other suppliers. Remember to haggle!

If they want your business they will often meet you in the middle. Even a 5 per cent discount can equate to a significant cost cut. Make sure you factor maintenance costs into your budget. A new carpet doesn't necessarily look new for long if it isn't maintained well. So if you have a tiny terror, or a fur ball for a pet, you may opt for stain-resistant carpets to eliminate future headaches. It will also cut your cleaning time. April is a good time to... protect your plants from the cold. The bark mulch will also make it tougher for snails and slugs to get to all your seedlings. Remember to move any potted plants that might be susceptible to frost to a warmer spot.

Harvest apples and feijoas. Speaking of fruit, now’s a good time to spray your fruit trees with a copper spray to reduce the fungal spores and the risk of disease. If you find you’re starting to mow the lawns more regularly again after summer, it’s a sure sign the soil temperature is still warm but there’s now some moisture in it too. Broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, leeks, lettuce, silverbeet and spinach can all be planted this month. Harvest pumpkins, potatoes and onions, and store in a cool dry place. Autumn leaves will be starting to fall and need raking and collecting. You can add some types of leaves to your compost, but others, like black walnuts, english walnut, hickory and pecan tree leaves, all need to be disposed of due to the toxin hydrojuglone in them. This toxin will cause other plants to turn yellow, wilt and die. The best way to collect and compost your other leaves is to first shred them by running over them with a lawn mower. Then tip a layer of leaves into a black plastic rubbish bag, sprinkle over a handful of garden lime and continue the layers until the bag is full. Tie the top of the bag and poke holes all over it.
