Our council is going to make some big decisions about where we are going to build our new administration centre and library and I am sure we all have an opinion about where it should be. I certainly do and I will be sending my submission to the council. This decision will create jobs and attract interest in our town. When completed it will improve the amenities in the town and thus attract even more residents. Basically everything we do will have an effect on the value of your property. Therefore I believe it behoves us to be aware of what the effects our decisions will be.

DIY projects for around the home Turn an old picture frame into a serving tray. This is a simple yet effective way to add some colour or patterns into your living space and you only need a few easy-to-find supplies. This is also a fun way to keep the kids entertained while also giving them a say in their living environment. Head down to your local second hand store and find a complete photo frame with a wider frame edge to make it easier to hold and it will be a lot sturdier and durable. You will also need some wallpaper or wrapping paper that you think looks nice, some glue that hardens clear, a cheap paint brush and a pair of sharp scissors. You’ll also need a ruler and a pencil. First you need to take the back off the frame. Next, roll out the wallpaper or wrapping paper with the pattern facing down and put the back of the frame on the paper. Trace around the back of the frame, then grab your ruler and draw a border five centimetres out from the original square. Put the frame backing on the plain side of the paper once more to check the sizing is right. Once you’re satisfied with the sizing of your paper, it’s time to stick it all together. Take your glue and apply four or five 50c sized blobs in the inside square. Grab your paint brush and cover the inside square of the paper. Stick the frame backing down and put a heavy book on top to get out any air bubbles. Leave it to dry according to the glue’s instructions or overnight. When the glue is good and dry, take the book off. Next you will need to fold the overhanging edges, like you would fold the corners of a present and glue those down as well. Once the glue has dried completely, put the frame back together.

September is a good time to...

out of adding a little flair to the pegs. All you need are some wooden pegs, a tuna can, and some paint, a little bit of pot plant mix and a plant of your choice. Paint the pegs however you want, patterns or solid colours look nice, and wait for the pant to dry. While you are waiting for the pegs to dry, wash out your tuna can and give it a good dry. Once the pegs are dry, clip them around the can. Once you’ve done that, put some pot plant mix into the can, plant your little plant and pop it on your windowsill.

DIY plant box. For this one, you need three 1m=long MDF planks, a saw, paint, glue and a hammer, and some thin nails.

First, figure out how long you want your plant box to be, 45cm would be a good bet, as you need some offcuts to make the shorter sides. Once you have measured out your length, if needed, cut the width of the base as well. Leave about 2cm of windowsill space just to make sure there’s no room for the plant box to fall off. Measure the thickness of the short sides and draw a pencil line on both ends. Put the long sides where you would want them to be and if there is any excess, saw it off. Glue box down and leave them to dry overnight. Once everything is dry, nail some long, thin nails just for some stability. Now you can paint and decorate the box however you please. Once all the painting is dry, put some pot plant mix in and plant your mini garden.

Cinderella Kids & Xanadu Venue: Event centre The Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre will entertain children of all ages in this very special double bill. Cinderella Kids 1st half: The wellknown tale begins with Cinderella, being cruelly treated by her stepmother and stepsisters. Cinderella is left alone in the garden with no dress for the ball or no way to get there. Her fairy Godmother comes to the rescue. A ‘happily ever after’ ending! Xanadu 2nd half: Sonny Malone, an artist trying to complete a mural of 9 Greek Muses, becomes frustrated and storms off. The 9 Muses then come to life and hatch a plan to inspire him to great artistry. The leader of the Muses becomes Kira, an Australian roller skater, who inspires Sonny to open a roller disco. Kira must return to Mount Olympus and meet with her father Zeus, to plead to be able to become mortal and stay on earth with the man she now loves, Sonny. Permission is granted and everyone roller skates and dances the night away. Includes the music I’m Alive, Evil Woman, Suddenly, Strange Magic, and Xanadu. Tickets $20
