Health

Owning your home is an expensive time of your life. More responsibility usually means more expenses that roll in the door, and acting responsibly often means putting more time in at the office rather than at the gym, or cutting down on expenses to save for your child’s education. But we often forget that looking after ourselves is the best investment we can make, not only for our health but also financially. There’s no doubting that a gym offers a fantastic all-over body workout. There are friendly professionals to help you with your technique and like-minded fitness enthusiasts to help you to keep motivated. But when life gets in the way, it’s not always possible to frequent the gym as often as we would like. More people are making the investment into their health and home by setting up a dedicated space to help with the fitness. A home gym is time efficient, because there’s no driving to and from, and no waiting to use the equipment that you want. There’s no membership fee so often the investment in equipment is paid back within two or three years, and because gym equipment retains most of its value, if you don’t like a particular item you can sell it and buy something different without taking much of a financial hit. If you have the dedication, a small investment of cash and space at home, you can hit your fitness goals while spending more time with your family. Visualise what you would like your home gym to be and choose the most appropriate space. Inside the house usually isn’t a smart idea if you have young children, so the garage is often the best place to start. Use sheets of plywood and rubber mats to reduce the noise of equipment hitting the concrete floor.

Motivate yourself to want to be there. Fill the space with motivational images and mantras. Set up a powerful sound system so you can enjoy your favourite music as you work out. Hang an inexpensive flat television on the wall so you can watch television or movies as you pedal or walk, or if you’re more of a browser, build a shelf to sit on your treadmill or bike so you can access your laptop. Who says you can’t work and play at the same time? When choosing your workout equipment, money doesn’t have to be king. A simple swiss ball and medicine ball or kettle bells can replicate the same workout as a range of machines, and they take up little space.

When choosing your workout equipment, money doesn’t have to be king. When choosing cardio, consider if a Zumba or step DVD will initially do the trick instead of a treadmill. Shop around for second-hand options, as people easily get bored of their workout equipment, so you can snap up a bargain. Remember that this is a space you should feel comfortable in, so don’t forget a bench seat to rest upon in-between reps. It will also come in handy for a range of exercises. Keep a bar fridge filled with cold water handy to ensure you remain hydrated throughout your workout. It’s your zone to chill out in, so choose the features that will make you more likely to return to it the next day. You already pay for your home, so it makes sense to use it to its full advantage.

Interior decoration

Decals - cheap and fun Decals can transform a wall cheaply and easily During a recent home remodel, Diane Wright decided the stairway leading to her garage needed some perking up. So she went online and found a wall decal roosting love birds on a branch.

"I love them. It adds some individuality," said Wright, who also has used decals in other parts of her home. Wall decals have taken off as an easy, affordable and temporary way to transform a room, said interior designer Darla Blake. terns and religious symbols. There are words and sayings. And some companies make custom decals. "Having a tree in your bathroom, or a park bench and bicycle on a wall behind a sofa, or a bridge going to nowhere brings a smile to everyone who enters the room," Blake said. The decals make it easy to personalize a room, which is popular right now, she said. "You can easily find something to reference your personality, your job or your lifestyle," she said. Wright has used decals as an inexpensive border in a bedroom and above photos. "It's certainly a whole lot less than hiring a painter," she said. Barbara Irvine chose a verse from one her favorite hymns to decorate the space above her kitchen sink. The words, "Come ye thankful people, come," prompt her to count her blessings, she said. She installed them herself by slowly rubbing them off their paper backing with a tool similar to a tongue depressor.

"They come with very good instructions," said Irvine. "It's fairly easy. You do want to get them level." The words are designed to easily go on and off, said Carrol Caldwell, owner of Wall Words. She advises using painter's tape to attach the paper backing to the wall before firmly rubbing the decal onto the wall.

"It brings back how important words are in your life," she said. "It's way to add something that is very meaningful and helps you through the day."

And the decals peel right off when you're done using them, she said.

Easy removal makes decals especially attractive to renters, students in dorms and parents decorating nurseries, said Jordan Guide, chief executive and founder of Walltat.com. They can add impact to a small room without taking up space, added interior designer Linda Hunt. She often puts them in powder rooms to make the space feel larger. She has had clients' monograms made and installed in their master bath. She also uses decals in kitchens and foyers. Once, she used them to create text for a "memory wall" that a client had in honor of her deceased brother. "The possibilities of what you can put together are endless," Hunt said.

Downton Abbey your home Intrigued by the drama and inspired by the sophistication of British aristocrats in "Downton Abbey," some fans are plotting to bring the series' style into their own homes, from gilded finishes to opulent upholstery to portrait paintings.

"We've gone so casual in the last decade in terms of home decor. I think there is a desire to be a little more formal, or a little more glamorous," says Kristie Barnett, an interior design blogger in Nashville, Tennessee. "That doesn't mean it can't be family-friendly."

"Downton Abbey," in production for its fourth season, features the noble Crawley family "upstairs" and its servants "downstairs" in a sprawling country estate. The characters are struggling to bring the estate and their traditional sensibilities into the 1920s, a time of social and political ferment.

In her living room, Barnett, who blogs at TheDecorologist.com, used gold paint to make a barley-twist coffee table appear worthy of nobility. Golden candlesticks and a crystal doorknob atop piles of books finish the look.

Ornate drawing rooms, flowing boudoirs, vibrant gardens and crisp, clean servants' quarters make the gorgeous backdrop for the PBS Masterpiece melodrama.

How do you bring that aristocratic look into a comfortable, modern home?

So how do you bring some of that aristocratic look into a comfortable modern home? GILDED for FORglamour GLAMOUR gilded One of the simplest ways to achieve the "upstairs" look of "Downton Abbey" is to apply gold metallic paint for a gilded finish on wood furniture, picture frames, mirror edges and other decorative items, including bookends and lamp stands.

"Gilt was all the rage during the British Edwardian Age," says Barnett. "And it's all the rage in my house."

FURNITUREwith WITHflourish FLOURISH furniture Richly upholstered settees, footstools, chaise lounges and Bergere chairs can add a touch of bygone beauty, but you should allow plenty of space for more livable pieces such as a traditional sofa. If you can't afford new furniture, consider adding silk or damask throw pillows. Tapestries and oriental rugs can be affordable and add the feel of affluence. Check out Etsy.com for "Downton Abbey"-style fabrics and textiles. LOVELY lighting LIGHTING lovely Another easy way to achieve the upstairs style, while keeping things practical and comfortable, is to hang an ornate light fixture or chandelier. Affordable plaster or stencil medallions placed around light fixtures can be another eye-catching element.

"People seem to be ready for more and more luxe materials and dramatic finishes," he says. "Even wallpaper, which was trending modern, is back to classic floral patterns and English traditionalism, but often with a bit of a twist." Painted walls are darker, with a gloss finish, experts say. You can create the upper-crust feel with bold jewel tones, including emerald and sapphire. Also in the traditional "Downton Abbey" palette, says Mary Lawlor, manager of color marketing for Kelly-Moore Paints, are refreshing pastels and creams, One of the mansion's expansive drawing rooms, for example, features a pale green wallpaper further softened with richly upholstered furniture in a mix of rose and classic ivory.

Or can use candlelight, which will bounce off mirrors, glass and crystal, creating the sort of warm glow that makes the Crawleys' multi-course dinners look so enticing.

A palette of grounded grays and varnished ivory is recommended

WONDERFULwindows WINDOWS&AND wonderful walls WALLS The return to detail and decoration includes opulent upholstery, drapes and wall coverings, says Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, founder of ApartmentTherapy.com.

The British nobility takes its heritage seriously, and there are painted portraits and landscapes throughout the show's castle. If you're at a rummage sale or consignment shop, pick up similar art and create a small

grouping on one wall. You don't have to be descended from these somber-looking subjects to bring their sophistication home. LUREof OFthe THElibrary LIBRARY lure While many elements of "Downton Abbey" style have a feminine appeal, there's no mistaking the bold, masculine feel of Lord Grantham's library. Add jewel-toned leather furniture or leather throw pillows to your reading areas for a twist to the muted espresso brown that has been popular in recent years. Consider turning a little-used dining room into a study, using the table as a hearty desk fit for the lords and ladies of your home. "People are wanting to do something different in their dining rooms, so a lot of dining rooms are being filled with bookcases," Barnett says. She advises painting bookcases the same shade as walls, but in a gloss or lacquer finish. SIMPLEsensitivity SENSIBILITY simple Contrasting with the rich decor of the show's upstairs rooms is the subdued, neutral palette and texture of the downstairs staff's living and working quarters. "Think natural materials like linen, cotton, raw wood, and a simplistic

farmhouse-type aesthetic that is influencing DIY projects," says Becki Speakman, trend and design director for Michaels Stores. One way to fashion the look is to use washed and softened painter's dropcloths for inexpensive curtains and slipcovers.

Create the upper-crust feel with bold jewel tones, including emerald and sapphire. Lawlor recommends a palette of grounded grays and varnished ivory. Creating flourishes of "Downton Abbey" style throughout a home can add interest and refinement. But give just a nod to the era don't try to replicate it. "The idea is to incorporate some of the glamour of that time in our modern-day setting," Barnett says, "without creating a museum in our homes."

After applying the leaf, you'll likely have excess hanging loose from the gilded item. Dust these pieces off with a soft, fluffy brush Step STEP6: 6 Protect your finished work from flaking or tarnishing with a clear acrylic spray. If desired, apply a glaze to give the piece an antiqued look.

STEP11Step

Rough up smooth surfaces with 220-grit sand-paper. Wipe with a cloth to remove dust.

Gilding, the art of applying ultrathin sheets of real gold to an object, is one of the easiest, least expensive ways to capture the lustre of those precious metals.

Step STEP2: 2 Apply a thin layer of adhesive, called gilding size, to your item.
