Give the patio a lift With the sun emerging after a long dark winter, so too do we want to spend more time outside, lounging luxuriously in a pretty space. Often our patio becomes our central outdoor dining area and there are many possibilities when it comes to creating magic. Here are some great ideas to get you started!
Choose a gathering place Always start your patio design by choosing a space in the backyard with plenty of space for family and friends to sit and gather. This can be centred around anything from a fire pit, a shady tree, fountain or sculpture, a favourite piece of artwork; whatever your favourite part of your backyard, arrange seating to attract attention and make a welcoming hangout spot. You will find all design flows from where you want to gather.
Be sure to check out the myriad of outdoor solar lights available as well as they can provide a cost effective way of lighting your area.
A fun game space Consider putting in a small sand pit to play croquet on or how about a paved outdoor chess board? Let your imagination roam and create an outdoor game that looks aesthetically pleasing as well as providing endless hours of fun for your guests!
Creative ice chest Every good patio has a novel ice chest. Consider finding a funky object from the second hand shop – or how about an old row boat that can be filled with ice and bevvies? There are a huge number of objects that could easily be turned into an ice chest eg. an old suitcase, a half barrel.
Heating
Shade
It pays to budget for outdoor heating so that the cooler night air does not put you or your guests off entertaining outside. There is a huge range of heating appliances available now but be sure that what you pick is not overbearing in relation to the size of your patio area. It should not fill the space but instead complement it.
Just as no-one wants to sit outside when it’s cold, no-one wants to bake under a hot sun too long either. Part of your budget should encompass having a shaded area where everyone can get out of the sun. Deciding the shape of your area will dictate what type of shade you use. For a quick fix a large umbrella can often do the trick.
Lighting Be sure to use all available trees and shrubs to light your area. White Christmas lights hung as garlands along the trunk of a tree can give off a beautiful light. Be careful not to have too many colours – simple is always more sophisticated.
Music Music can add an ambience to your evening and provide you with a restful calm environment. It also serves as a great backdrop to conversation and can set the mood. These days there are many ornaments that house Bluetooth speakers that can look great in your garden settings.

The man cave – it’s become a must-have Gone are the days of a dilapidated, rickety old shed out the back with a few pieces of broken garden equipment and some old car pieces cluttering up the space. Men all over the country are seeking solitude away from the fancy and often feminine interior of the home to create a testosterone-fuelled man cave, where a bar is essential, the large screen television is king and a weights bench in the middle of the room isn’t frowned upon. You’ve got to admit, it’s pretty hard to come by an extra room in your house dedicated to chilling. Chilling is an art that takes much practice and can only truly be mastered over time. Therefore it gets lost pretty quick in hustle and bustle of family life. The trickiest part about building a man cave is convincing the other half that it’s a good idea, however, as soon as a bunch of sporting memorabilia, a dart board and hunting trophies surface, the notion of creating a blokes-only area outside all of a sudden becomes more appealing. It’s like a modern-day gentleman’s club, minus the decorum, and the wife is happy because she knows where you are and who you’re with. Sounds like an investment into the relationship and what partner wouldn’t appreciate that? Now that you’ve got the all important nod to get cracking on creating your haven away from the house, it’s time to get planning. Will your current garage be sufficient for all the entertaining possibilities you would like to explore, or should you consider a brand new build to cater
for some added luxuries, like a pizza oven, massive barbecue and possibly a large spa pool? Don’t forget the space for your television to get in some uninterrupted rugby viewing time, a weights bench to blast out a few reps to relieve some stress after a hard day at work, and a pool table to keep the lads entertained when there’s nothing decent on telly, reminiscent of the cigar smoking Sinatra-style times, sipping single malt scotch between shots. And the ultimate in man-cave supremacy, your own bar, where a cold beer is always at arm’s length. Take some time to walk through the space and visualise what you want your man-cave to look like. Be realistic in your assessment of the space and function. Pick a centralised theme of your personal space, be it sports, hunting, music etc, and plan your furniture around making the most of the primary function. This should give you a good indication of if you can renovate your existing space, or if it will suit your needs to build from brand new. Consider plumbing and electrical costs and consult with a professional before tackling any of these areas yourself. Ask your mates to give you a hand, you never know, they might just have some bright ideas that you hadn’t thought of on how to maximise the space and if they have building experience, then even better. Once you find yourself immersed in your own backyard ‘ode to being a bloke’, you’ll wonder how you ever lived before it.

Lawn porn – it’s a bloke thing Lawn lovers rejoice – there’s a green revolution gaining traction across the country. The humble lawn has become so much more than the backyard of the family home, as increasing numbers take up the challenge. The subject of lawnporn has generated several Facebook pages, encompassing several countries. Exponents, predominately men, spend a lot of time on social media channels discussing a wide range of topics relating to their quest to attain that perfectly manicured lawn; the envy of all who view it. The original Lawnporn Facebook page kicked off just over three years ago, after discussion between a handful of mates over a few beers, and has continued to gain traction to the point it now boasts more than 6500 members. Fertiliser – organic versus conventional, weed control and the dreaded problem of cat pee are all up for interTasman debate, as it seems
men across the ditch are equally devoted to their lawns, although the grass is by no means greener. Aside from cat pee, trampolines are apparently a big dilemma for lawnporners and the page offers a number of remedies. Photos and video clips are

uploaded, to be admired and critiqued, all in a good natured fashion. There’s an obvious bond between this band of brothers, who literally love to watch grass grow. Lawns also dominate backyard barbecue conversations for turf
aficionados, where grass types, mowing and watering techniques and the merits of various garden suppliers come under scrutiny. Terms such as hollowing, coring and deep scarification trip off the tongue. No effort is too great for those smitten by lawnporn. Evenings and weekends are devoted to achieving those flawless seas of green. Hours can be whittled away and wallets emptied in hardware stores and garden centres. Public holidays are now dedicated to achieving flawlessly trimmed edges, scalping the thatch, aerating and rooting out any weeds lurking in the turf. While lawnporn is attracting younger blokes in droves, there are those with years of experience, who laid the spadework for the movement. According to Rex Tarbotton, who along with wife Pat, was this year’s winner of the Ashburton Horticultural Society’s best lawn competition, the secret is lots
of TLC. It’s the second time the Tarbottons have taken the award. As a retired farmer, growing grass is second nature, however both he and Pat work on the prize-winning Allenton lawn. The lawn was sowed about eight years ago using fescue Brittany - a brown top variety of seed. “You’ve got to start with a good base and a clean seedbed and plant the right type of grass for the conditions,” Rex said. “Water, top dressing, mowing and de-weeding are the secret to maintaining the lawn. A lot of people are scared of fertiliser.” Not so the Tarbottons. Their green oasis is topdressed once a month for the three months leading into the competition, and two or three times during the rest of the year. And if the competition is still running next year, they’ll be back tilting for a trifecta.

Taking your pool out of winter mode Test your pool water
If that mild winter was anything to go by, we’ll be thinking about swimming soon. A backyard pool is one proven way to have lots of visitors over summer and watersports are not usually compatible with digital screens, so it’s a great way to make sure your kids are off their devices. The weather experts are predicting temperatures to be a bit above average for the next three months so get ready to take your pool out of winter mode. Here’s a handy checklist of things to do:
There are several different kinds of pool test kits you can use to test the level of chemicals in your pool. Always test your pool chemical levels after backwashing the filter. Follow the instructions on the kits to conduct the tests and add the recommended amount of acid or chlorine. A good idea is to get your water professionally tested. Take a water sample to a swimming pool store, where they’ll likely be able to test it while you wait and recommend any product that could help.
Add chemicals
Test your salt level
The amount of chemicals you need to add to your pool will depend on how clean it is and how regular you have been with maintenance. If the pool isn’t very clear, it might need a dose of chlorine. After that, it might also need algaecide and stabiliser.
Clean the pool After adding the chemicals, use your scoop to remove all the leaves you can. Use a brush to scrub the sides and the bottom of the pool. Regular brushing prevents algae, removes dirt and keeps the pool surface smooth. Have the pump running when you brush, so that the debris will be pulled
into the filter, and removed from the water. As a final step, vacuum the pool to remove any remaining leaves and debris.
Check the pool pump Your pool pump, sand filter and salt water chlorinator need to be working well, so the rest of your
pool can run properly. Check the pump is in good working order and water is flowing through the filter. Check the pressure on the sand filter. If it’s high and the water flow coming out of the pool jets is low, it might need backwashing. If the salt chlorinator is covered in whitescale, clean it in a hydrochloric acid
Outdoor living all day and all of the night Free measure and quote
mix.
Empty skimmer box Your skimmer box is designed to collect floating debris as well as connect to your pool hose. Make sure you empty it out regularly so the water flows freely through to the filter.
Standard pool test kits won’t tell you how much salt is in your pool. After winter and heavy rain, you want to make sure it’s at the right level before you go swimming. Use the salt test strip kit to check your salt levels. Follow the instructions on the kit and if needed, add as many bags of salt recommended for your size of pool.
Be patient The whole process of getting your pool ready for summer can take a couple of weeks. The work and the wait will be worth it.

Planning key to buliding a fence Almost anyone can build a wood fence with good planning, some basic carpentry skills and the right tools for the job. The most difficult part may be trying to decide on the style of fence (there are many different types), the type of building materials and possibly some hard work.
Wood and nails Most fences are made of pressure treated wood and use only rust-resistant hardware such as hot-dipped galvanised, galvanised bolts, screws, hinges and catches. Your fence will last longer.
Accuracy of design First you need to plot your fence line. Unless you are marking joint boundary lines with your neighbour so as to share the cost, build the fence 3-5cm on your side of the line. This will eliminate possible boundary disputes with neighbours in the future.
a fence line by “ Plot marking each corner
post with a solidly driven stake. Run a tightly drawn string line between the stakes, using the line and a level to locate sites for all posts.
The best way to mark the line is with the survey you may have obtained when you bought your house. The accuracy of your fence line will determine the straightness of your fence so mark it carefully. Plot a fence line by marking each corner post with a solidly driven stake. Run a tightly drawn string line between the stakes, using the line and a level to locate sites for all posts. Mark each post spot with a temporary stake.
Digging the holes The next step is digging the post holes. If the posts are not set firmly or deep enough into the ground this may result in your newly built fence tilting, collapsing
or heaving in cold weather. The posts must go well below the frost line to stay in place for years to come.
Placing the posts Posts can be set in earth and gravel, but concrete provides the strongest installation. Check out the various concrete options as some are easier than others. Many people today use a mix that is just right for posts. All you do is pour the mix in the hole, add water and stir. Be sure to plan and time your work carefully, because if concrete seeps under the post it can retain moisture and speed decay. Begin with the corner posts – you’ll need them to plumb and align remaining posts. Plan one and a half bags of concrete mix for a 10cm post set 90cm deep, one bag for 60cm deep posts. Place a large, relatively flat stone in the bottom of the hole, then fill it with gravel (about 15cm), or until it is level with the top of the stone. Continue to plumb and align the post while adding concrete (5-7cm at a time), tamping it in. It is a good idea to add another 3-5cm of concrete above ground, sloping it away from the posts for water runoff. Be sure to double check and triple check your posts for plumb and alignment. You’ll have about 20 minutes to move your posts after pouring. And wait at least two days before installing the rails and siding so the concrete is cured. Align each fence post so they are exactly vertical and in a straight line. The most common aligning method is the end post or corner post method, though it may be impractical for fences longer than 30 metres. Begin with your two corner posts. Position posts with their faces in flat alignment and plumb them with a level. Next, nail a 5cm-long 1cm by 2cm spacer block to each post – about 30cm above the ground. Stretch and tie a mason’s line between the posts, making sure the blocks are between the line and the posts. Then tie a second mason’s line at the top of the posts. With lines intact, set and align each post so their faces are exactly the thickness of a 1cm by 2cm away from the lines. Before and after filling each post hole with concrete, check each post for plumb and alignment, using a level on two adjacent faces. Then tack on your desired railings!

Living wall gardens Growing an organic living wall garden is weed-free, and easy to accomplish. A pretty wall garden can provide masses of organic flowers, food, and herbs for apartment dwellers and homeowners anywhere in the world. Living wall gardening has the fantastic benefit of being low maintenance and easy to access for harvesting and allow a gardener to plant edibles in a small floor space area by growing vertically. While well suited for urban gardeners with limited space, this technique is also amazingly accessible for small patio owners or home dwellers with tall fences surrounding their properties. Build an organic living wall garden on fences, walls and gates. Gates, in particular, offer a unique growing area. Growing herbs, vegetables, and pollinator attracters are great living wall ideas for sunny areas, but it is also possible to grow vegetative plants of all types in the part-shade which is definitely a common condition for side gated areas on many homes. Finding the right living wall system and plants to fit your unique planting requirements will help you succeed at growing – you can make your own living wall or purchase a unit that will work for your garden. Leafy vegetables such as Swiss chard, lettuces, kale, arugula, beets, and vines do remarkably well on organic living walls even if planted in shade to part shade. Herbs work great as well. A living wall garden can contribute heavily to a family’s culinary needs and have the added benefit of being chemical-free and weed-free.

■■ Deflecting water away from the walls during heavy rain ■■ Providing the building with an extra layer of insulation, so cutting down on energy loss and decreasing in heating requirements, even in modern, well-insulated homes ■■ Helping to keep homes cool in summer. Unlike brick and concrete walls, green surfaces don’t store up the sun’s energy in the daytime and release it as night-time in the same way ■■ Offering great aesthetic benefits ■■ Providing habitats for insects ■■ Contributing to improvement of urban air quality ■■ Contributing to reduced noise pollution
Types of green walls At their most simple, green walls can just
be a planting of wall shrubs and climbers (direct greening). Claddings made from plants such as pyracantha or ceanothus can provide many of the benefits offered by more complex systems. At the other extreme are engineered, planting systems (indirect greening and living wall systems). These often consist of modules fixed against a wall that contain soil or media for the plants to grow in. These often require irrigation systems and may need professional installation and maintenance. To be more precise, the types of green wall have been categorised as: Direct greening is a system where a self-attaching climber utilises the substrate of the façade for support and, sometimes, nutrition. Indirect greening includes some form of engineered solution, from trellises to wires for the climbers to use; thus providing a gap of insulating air between the building and the plant. Living wall systems (LWS), finally, are constructed with planter boxes or felt; these do not require the plants to be climbing, they often need to be irrigated and plants for intensive green roofs are frequently suitable for these systems.
Choosing and constructing Decide how you wish to plant your green wall. There are various systems available, according to the size of your wall and budget. Low cost and simple to install Direct greening: the simplest way of greening walls by planting climbers, wall shrubs or fruit trained as espaliers or fans Medium cost and DIY skills required
Indirect greening: This is within the skills of most competent DIYers and requires the surface to be first clad with wires or trellis. Climbing plants are then grown against it Living wall systems: For smaller budgets, there are simple grow-bag-type products for walls or you can plant up one or more small panels that can be added to, depending on space and budget. These are available from garden centres. Introduce the plants at as small size as possible, ideally as plugs. Establishment is likely to be more successful at this stage of development Higher cost, professional installations Indirect greening: Large scale installations of wire, trellis or supports, such as covering the side of a house. It is the scale that makes this more expensive and needs professional installation. Living wall systems: can use plants grown in cells containing compost or other growing media, which are connected to drip irrigation. Harvested rainwater can be used with some systems. These are installed by specialist companies. Green walls can be installed indoors with additional artificial lighting
Choosing plants If the wall you are about to add plants to receives less than half a day of sun in mid-summer, choose plants for shade To simplify planting and watering needs, try to choose plants that have similar light and moisture requirements to the conditions on offer
When to plant green walls Spring is the best time to plant because plants are coming into active growth and will establish quickly. Free Quotes

Regulating temperature Heating your home is one of the most important aspects when building or renovating. Heat pumps are designed for ease of use and instant heat at the push of a button. By choosing a heat pump as your primary heat source you remove the yearly task of filling the wood shed, daily task of filling the wood basket and monthly task of replacing the gas cylinder. Even if you have an alternate heat source heat pumps are great for those cooler September and April days where you cannot justify (or be bothered) lighting the fire, Saturday mornings when you get up and read the paper and weekday mornings whilst you have your breakfast before work. They come in all shapes, sizes and colours and can even be hidden in your roof cavity by the way of a ducted system.
Planting for the bees
Cooling One thing we tend to forget in New Zealand and especially Ashburton is the cooling aspect these units offer. With modern houses being built for the sun and with more and more glazing going in, our houses are becoming hotter. This means relaxing on the couch and sleeping at night is not as pleasant as it should be.
A lot of homeowners believe that because they have an alternate heat source a heat pump is not required but we
are now finding that a lot of customers are installing these units just for air conditioning purposes.

You can’t beat having a beer on the couch watching the cricket or going to sleep in a cool fresh climate.
We all know we need to be looking after our hard-working bee populations. They are the vital pollinators that we rely on to produce food, but sadly much of the wild foliage and flowers they feed from is diminishing. September is Bee Aware Month, which is promoted by Apiculture New Zealand and encourages people to plant bee-friendly gardens. To attract them, Tuigarden.co.nz says you can plant calendula, marigold, sunflowers, poppies, cosmos, hollyhocks, fox gloves, clover, nasturtiums, comfrey, dahlias, echinacea, geraniums, honeysuckle and clematis. Not only will they help our bee populations thrive, the blooms will bring wonderful colours and smells to your own private mini-meadow. But, do remember, some people can have a life-threatening allergic reaction to bees and bee-stings, so yates.co.nz suggests including a cute sign warning people of your bee-friendly garden.
