Quality on Charlesworth 3 Charlesworth Drive, Allenton Situated on the northwest corner of Ashburton’s residential area, this home is just over two years old. The layout is makes the best use of solar gain into living spaces and flow between all of the living spaces. Heating is provided via a new Woodsman Ferva double chamber log fire which is absolutely brilliant according to the owners. They have installed heat transfers into both bathrooms to keep them dry and cozy during winter as well. A heat pump in the main living area can also be used to heat or cool the

living space as can the one in the passage to do the same throughout the rest of the home. Insulation is of course full spec to today’s standard and includes the garage door.

H T H HSUMMER T T SALE

There are thermal curtains and/or quality blinds in each room for heat/ cool retention and your privacy. There is outdoor living from both living rooms and also the master bedroom. Some more landscaping in the front would enhance this property and add to the street appeal. Make it yours today so you get a near new home without all the stress.

Easy As – How to

create concrete garden borders Getting started 1. Run a string line where you want to lay your pavers. You can use a reinforcing rod or peg to fix the string line to. Ensure the line is tight.

HANDY HINTS

2. If your section is slightly sloping or uneven, fix your string line 100mm off the ground. This will be your point of reference, or ‘datum’ throughout the whole job and ensures that the edging will be straight and even.

If you’re laying a long stretch of edging, or it’s a hot day, lay 4 to 5 pavers at a time so your concrete doesn’t set and become unworkable.

Getting it done 1. Dig a trench wide enough to fit your chosen edging, and deep enough for a layer of base material and concrete. Our edging is 50mm thick so we need 50mm of concrete on top of a 20mm scoria basecourse. The edging pavers will settle 10mm into the concrete, so the trench needs to be 110mm deep. 2. Lay in the trench a 20mm deep base-course of scoria and compact it down. 3. Mix concrete according to packet instructions and lay it 50mm deep on top of the scoria and roughly smooth it off. 4. Lay the edging pavers on top of the concrete, making sure they’re placed straight along the string line. When lined up, settle the edging 10mm down into the concrete, and ensure they’re 100mm below the string line. 5. If you need to cut a piece of concrete edging to size you can use an angle grinder with a diamond or concrete cutting blade, or a bolster. 6. Before the concrete sets do a final check that your pavers are in line and level. 7. Wait for the concrete to set, ready for grouting. 8. Mix up your grout and use a pointing trowel to work it into the gaps between the pavers and smooth it out. 9. Use a wet sponge to clean excess grout off pavers to prevent staining.

Keep watering your courgettes and beans - the more you water the bigger they’ll get.

Deadhead your flowers. If you want your flowers to flower longer or flower again, then deadheading is the key.

Remember to water your strawberries and tomatoes too (avoid the leaves on your tomatoes) - the more water they get the juicier their fruit will be.

Deadheading means to remove any fading or dead flower heads from your plants. There are a couple of reasons for doing this – one, it makes the plant look nicer and two, depending on the type of plant it can encourage it to flower again or keep flowering for longer. When a flower loses its petals it starts to form seed heads and focus all its energy on developing more seeds – not flowers. Harvest your corn. Your corn is ready to harvest when the ears have completely filled out. What are the ears? The ears are the part of the plant that contain the cob. You can check whether the ear is filled out by feeling the end of the ear where the silks come out. The silks are the furry/ hairy bits sticking out the top. If the end is rounded, blunt and feels full it’s ready.

If it feels pointed at the end it needs a bit longer. The silks on the end of the ear can also help tell you whether it’s ready to harvest or not. When these bits dry up and go brown it will also mean the cob is ready to harvest. Ensure your household has plenty of ingredients for summer salads by remembering to plant lettuce, basil, spring onions and other gourmet herb and vegetable seedlings every couple/few weeks.

If you don’t have any tomatoes yet on the plants, use a paintbrush (or even an electric toothbrush turned on, minus the brush head) to spread the pollen from the flowers on one plant to another plant to pollinate them. Harvest your fennel. And make your excess broccoli into broccoli soup to freeze for autumn meals. And give your oregano a trim. Cut it back so the stems are around 50mm from the ground. This will stop the plant going leggy. You can dry the removed branches. Once the branches are dry, peel the leaves off and chop them up then store in a jar for use in your cooking.
