Whatever happened to us? Today we all seem to want the end result up front. I know the young ones of today have grown up with technology from day one of their life and can struggle with entertaining themselves without the use of electronic devices etc… When I was a child, which was a wee while ago now (believe it or not) we had a games room, it was called outside! We would gather up all the neighbours and play Cowboys and Indians with sticks for guns and home made bows and arrows, or kick
Don’t get me wrong, I embrace technology wholeheartedly. I just think (broadly speaking) we may have given our children too much too early before they have a real understanding of true values. The point being, when our younger generation couples start looking for their first home today, most want all the bells and whistles, not a sound, basic home that can be remodelled or simply redecorated. Has the technology they have grown up with robbed them of some basic skills? Yes granted not everyone has DIY skills, but you can learn or trade some of the area’s with friends (you maybe good at painting, a friend maybe a plumber or electrician or builder etc). The older generation weren't born with these skills either, they learnt them. It’s a great feeling trying something new and achieving a result you previously doubted you could manage. When you are born you can't run. What I’m trying to say is, there are many opportunities out there for first home buyers, embrace them, as

long as the bones are sound, have a go! My generation grew up in 100120sqm homes, these were mostly three bedrooms one bathroom one living. Some families were large, but made do and survived. This generation of home can be an easy redecoration project, some also being straight forward to extend. At the end of it, you will be on the property ladder and will have gained some skills and should feel very proud of what you have achieved. Look at each property, not at what it is now, but what it could be like, ie the kitchen is currently on the cold side of the house or the living area is disjointed from outside living space. Some of these issues are very easy to remedy, others not so easy. When you have ideas, don't be scared to ask your real estate professionals opinion on finished project value, especially important if you don't plan on holding for long. ALWAYS get a reputable builder to check the property and your ideas first, especially if you are thinking renovations or extensions. Happy house hunting and remember look outside the box.
