Top tiling tips with Louis
W
hen it comes to tiling, there are six things to consider before getting your hands dirty. Whether it’s tiling for your bathroom, kitchen, or any other room in the house; we have you covered. We spoke to interior consultant Louis Redmond from Redmonds Furnishings to get his top tiling tips for summer. 1. Before you start Think about the look of your home. Stick with the style of the interior of your chosen room, but make it better and more refined with your chosen tiles. 2. Tile size Small-sized tiles are usually better suited to residential areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and toilets. Large tiles make a room appear bigger than it is. In a small room, light-coloured tiles will make the space feel big-
ger, as does the direction of the lay when using a rectangular tile. If you have a large room you have more options; you can choose from light to dark coloured tiles. 3. Grout Don’t forget to pick the right colour grout for your tiles. Contrasting grout will make the design pop, but it can add tension to the space by emphasising the lines; while colour matched grout will make the pattern more subtle. Ensure your grouted areas are sealed to prevent staining as well. 4. Colour Decide on the general vibe you want the room to reflect with your tiles. Do you want your room to be tranquil and composed or interchangeable and mysterious? “Green in all its many forms is inherently tranquil and connected to nature. This is why choosing

tiles from this colour palette will have longevity. “Natural shades found in interior items such as rattan, sisal, bamboo, and wood complement green colourways which is why this emerging trend in tile choice is likely to stay around for some time”, says Redmond.
Tiles should not be the main feature of a room, but instead, you should aim for your chosen tiles to complement other design pieces in the room. 5. Texture and pattern Whether you want matt or polished tiles, the choice is yours, but terrazzo tiles are trending for this season. “Terrazzo tiles come in all shapes and colours. With its decorative speckled design and soft textural pattern, terrazzo is endlessly stylish and versatile and is fast becoming an interior favourite as a more affordable alternative to marble or granite”, says Redmond.
6. Natural light A gloss tile will suit a dark space as it reflects more light, as does a lighter colour. A glazed tile is easy to clean, whereas a natural terracotta tile has no glaze and would need a seal to stop staining from occurring. “Our top tip for indoor and outdoor tiles is to always look for the frosting and slip rating. Ssome tiles under application of water can quickly become not fit for purpose, so always chat to a professional”, says Redmond. Make sure you utilise these top tiling tips this summer!
