Reopening to new beginnings

L

ast Sunday was a memorable day in the life of Hakatere Presbyterian Oxford Street Church. For the first time in four years parishioners worshipped inside their church building. Following the Christchurch earthquake, the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand, introduced tougher strengthening requirements. With Ashburton being in an earthquake prone area, both St Andrew’s and Oxford Street churches had to improve their safety standards. The church closed its doors in 2018, parishioners met the cost through investment funds and the roof and walls were reinforced at the cost of several thousand dollars. April 3, last Sunday, was harvest thanksgiving and also a celebration of the building’s reopening.

“It was another new beginning and a wonderful homecoming for members of the church,” Minister, Rev Johanna Warren said. The church was opened and dedicated nearly 52 years earlier, on September 27, 1970, but there was a Presbyterian presence in Oxford Street long before then.

After alterations, the East Church Hall was opened on September 26, 1946, and was part of St Andrew’s Parish. The minister for oversight of Ashburton East, Allenton and Wakanui was the Rev David Steedman. A new parish was formed in the 1950s under the leadership of Henry Lane and

was named Trinity. With the growth of numbers in the 1950s, the Trinity Parish was split and St Paul’s was born, covering Hampstead, Netherby and Wakanui. Church services continued to be

held in the church hall, however it was agreed a purpose-built church should be erected. Fundraising schemes began with large scale parish dinners at the Radiant Hall, concerts and a garden party arranged. After visits to other churches, plans were accepted by the congregation in 1968 and the tender for building the church from Williamson Construction was accepted and work began. When the church opened in September 1970 by the Very Revd Dr J.S. Somerville, the financial cost came to $52,452 including a new Baldwin organ. The church, as it is today, seats about 250 people with another 30 seats in the upstairs gallery. Features include symbols on the life of St Paul shown on sandblasted panels and the 26 foot-high focal window, depicting Jesus as the Good Shepherd.

ith parishioners back in their Oxford Street building after a four year upgrade, the church is now facing a future challenge. An anonymous author, writing in the latest parish bulletin, wrote these words last Sunday under the heading Moving Forward. “An advertisement that has been on TV recently lately always catches my eye. A father and his daughter are out driving and the young girl says: “Why is it that we can never see the future?” “How true and this is a good example relating to the Hakatere Parish. What is its future? We can’t all agree that Hakatere is an ageing congregation and allow it to dwindle out in number. So what is the parish’s future? Not a lot if we sit on our hands and do nothing. “There are endless opportunities in the

community that we could pursue – that is if we wanted to, accept the guidance and be prepared to carry them out. “Oxford Street Church is a good centre hub for many activities in the community with the local school nearby and a new subdivision in the making on the boundary of town with approximately 400 new houses being built. “The Oxford Street Church is able to adapt seating according to the various sizes required and to accommodate both large and smaller services and has always been regarded as a friendly church. “The church grounds have the scope to allow community events such as the annual fair and other church related activities. I challenge Parish Council to formalise one site by the end of 2022. “If you can’t think about the future, you cannot have one.”

Jenny Scott has been a pillar of Presbyterian pilgrimage F

or about 75 of her 83 years Jenny Scott has been a driving force at Hakatere Presbyterian’s Oxford Street Church. Jenny was at last Sunday’s service when parishioners celebrated their first service back after four years away, but she was also a member of the parish for many years before that. Her first memory was going to Sunday School in the 1940s in the church hall in Oxford Street. Hampstead was a growing suburb and the Presbyterian Church believed it needed a presence on the east side of Ashburton. “We wore our best clothes to Sunday School,” Jenny recalled. “Miss Cairns was my teacher. She might have had a first name, but she was Miss Cairns to all the children.” Jenny progressed through Sunday School to Bible Class and Girls’ Brigade and then chose teaching as her career. For about eight years she studied at Teachers’ College in Dunedin and taught around Ashburton, but then, when a property in Oxford Street was offered for sale, Jenny and her husband, Alf, bought it. The purchase renewed her interest in St Paul’s as it was then called. It wasn’t long before Jenny became Sunday School superintendent with well over 100 youngsters attending. Sunday School was held at 10am, then some of them stayed on for the 11am morning service. The parish was growing and deserved its own church building. Parishioners set to and raised the funding for its construction. Jenny recalls cake stalls in the arcade, bottle drives, pea straw sales, recipe book sales and the men grew and sold potatoes as well as firewood. One means of raising funds depended on the size of a woman’s waist. Jenny remembers them getting the measuring tape out and, depending on their contours, they gave money. If a woman’s waist measured 20 inches, they gave two pounds. If your waist was greater than that, you had to hand over larger amounts. “It was just a fun thing we did,” she said.

When the building finally opened on September 27, 1970, Jenny played a key role. She was Sunday School Superintendent, bulletin editor, a member of the Association of Presbyterian Women and today she’s a member of the Parish Council and serves on the property and finance committee. Jenny has one vivid memory of the church just before it opened in 1970. She had some curious children in the Sunday School and they wanted to see inside the building before it was dedicated. But the minister, Rev Haydn Pirie, wouldn’t let it happen. The church had to be consecrated first before anyone was allowed inside. Jenny’s two children, Richard and Alastair, were christened in the

church hall and grandchildren have been blessed in the church. The Presbyterian form of worship has always been familiar to Jenny. “It was something I grew up with, my friends are there and I got to know many of the ministers and their families who served at Hakatere Presbyterian’s two churches, at Oxford Street and Tinwald, over the years,” she said. With the church building closing four years ago to have its walls and ceiling strengthened, Jenny and many parishioners have longed to be back. Last Sunday they returned to their spiritual home. “It was nice to be back and to hear the music again. I felt I was coming home,” she said. “I’ve celebrated many of the church’s milestones over the years.” Worship is held at Oxford Street on the first and third Sundays of the month and at Tinwald on the

second and fourth Sundays. While Jenny Scott acknowledges the church has an ageing congregation, she wants it to remain the centre of worship in Hampstead.
