Fast five questions with the boss Daryl Holden has been at the Ashburton Guardian as its managing editor for a tick over 12 months. Malcolm Hopwood put five key questions to him about the Guardian, its new move, its hopes and offerings. 1) What does moving into new premises mean for the future of the Guardian in Ashburton? It’s exciting. It’s been some time in the planning so it’s great to see it finally come to fruition. It’s not been a massive move in terms of how far we’ve had to travel to our new digs. Actually, we’ve moved only a couple of hundred metres. Still, the new office on the same floor of Somerset House suits our needs perfectly. It’s fresh, inviting and it feels like a whole new beginning. 2) Explain the importance of the Ashburton Guardian

to the Mid Canterbury community: The Guardian has a vital role to play in Mid Canterbury and not just as the leading source of news and information. We also have a community leadership role to play, which was highlighted when we answered the cry for help from local businesses with our successful shop smart, shop local campaign. Businesses needed support and we stepped up to provide it. Expect to see more of that happening. Focusing on community involvement is one of the things that distinguishes the

Ashburton Guardian from other publications. 3) What’s the significance of the Guardian’s 143-year history in Ashburton? It means that we remain one of the oldest newspapers in the country, one of the few that is privately owned and we’re survivors. It also says that we know our people and our community better than anyone. Our relationships go back decades upon decades. People trust us. 4) Why is the Guardian even more important to businesses in terms of telling their stories, promoting them and using our

various platforms to do so? We’ve got the most popular Facebook page in Ashburton with over 15,000 followers. We’re also about to launch a more modern website and Ashburton App. Businesses are starting to understand that they should work with us to use our multiple platforms to connect with thousands of potential customers. Braided Rivers applauds Guardian as long term tenant T

he Chief Executive of Braided Rivers Community Trust, Rob Reid, has welcomed the relocation of the Ashburton Guardian to a custom-built facility on Level 3 at Somerset House. The Guardian has been an anchor tenant but, when space on the other side of the building became available, it negotiated with Braided Rivers Community Trust to move there. The Guardian staff is operating from the location that looks out on Burnett Street and to the east side of Ashburton, from today. Rob Reid said the community trust, with the exception of the Devon Tavern, has divesting itself of food, accommodation and beverage responsibilities. It now focuses on its property portfolio as a way of generating funds for the community. Somerset House opened in 2008 to attract both retail and office space and the Ashburton Guardian and Croys were its first tenants.

“It’s been consistently tenanted since then and is a popular key location in the Ashburton CBD,” Reid said. “The Braided Rivers Community Trust moved there in 2010 and will continue to utilise the building as its headquarters.” Reid confirms that, through its tenancies, it has generated millions of dollars that have been distributed to the community. “Somerset House has proved very successful, and we’re delighted to continue our long-term relationship with the Ashburton Guardian,” he said. While the building has attracted businesses and retailers throughout the 14 years it’s been operating, Reid said it has a small area vacant at present and would welcome approaches from people who’d be interested in the space. “The name Somerset is a drawcard and was named after the Somerset Hotel which was a landmark on the site from the 19th century,” he said.
