WHAT’S ON TREND

Blacken

your life

It may be simple but it sure is effective. Monochrome is the latest trend to hit interior decorating and it’s taking off around Mid Canterbury with the style suiting old and newer houses. While many think of it as simply black and white, monochrome is as much about placement, simplicity and elegance as it is about colour. Redmonds interior designer, Hayley Sparrow, agrees and says if you’re going down this track with your décor you need to be careful not to overdo it. A few carefully chosen pieces to accentuate the design can make all the difference, she says. The black and white effect was highlighted extensively on the latest series of The Block when popular couple Jamie and Hayden aggressively pursued the monochrome theme even though it wasn’t to the taste of the judges. The couple made $160,000 over and above the reserve price on the house, proving its popularity in the market. Continue >

But to make your interior work you need to make sure you consider the following points: Catalogue crush:

You know when you walk into someone’s home and it feels familiar? Make sure to have a variety in your room and gather unique pieces. Master the art of the mix!

Unfriendly furniture:

Think of the furniture in your room like friends at a party — the wallflowers don’t have much fun. It’s a common mistake to park your sofa or chairs on a wall or in a corner, but it’s usually not the way to encourage intimate conversation. Imagine yourself doing various activities in your room and group your furniture accordingly. As long as you keep a reasonable flow, you can’t go wrong with a cluster.

Loathsome lighting: An overhead fixture is not your friend. Allowing yourself

to exist in anything other than golden, layered lighting is a huge rookie mistake. A good rule of thumb is that you need at least three separate light sources in any room (and that ceiling monstrosity doesn’t count). Vary the heights and strengths of your lighting to make even your cheapie basics look expertly expensive.

Atrocious artwork:

We’re not knocking your taste in art (by all means, hang what you love) but please make sure to hang it properly. No one wants to crank their necks to see your lovelies. Art that’s too high or low is a dead giveaway of a decorating rookie. Eye-level is the goal.

Forgetting your gut:

This idea can manifest itself in many ways. Are you using handme-downs you hate just because

BUILDERS!

you feel you “should” keep them? Did you let someone talk you into buying something for your home because it was cheap/ practical/necessary to them but it’s not right for you? Did you pick a wall colour after seeing a beautiful, inspirational image, but

something about it is just wrong? If something isn’t working, you must change it! Even if you spent time and money to get it that way, not addressing what you know isn’t working is costing you even more in energy and satisfaction with your home. 

Stash palace Had a look at your garage lately or are you too scared to set foot inside that dark place crammed full of all those objects you thought you’d put away just in case you might need them once again in the next 50 years! If it’s the latter you are not alone. Many of us don’t realise what an asset our garages are in terms of storage solutions. So, by de-cluttering and reorganising with these simple tips you can make an ugly area, a haven of tidiness and order! Firstly look through the garage to determine what items should or can be stored together, such as gardening supplies and tools, sports and hobby gear, seasonal items, such as holiday decorations, household tools and hardware, automotive tools and supplies, paints and combustibles and garbage and recycling.

For items that you’re getting rid of, sort into three piles: recycle, toss, and donate. After you’ve sorted, clean your garage from top to bottom. This is a great time to remove stains from your concrete floor. It’s also an ideal time to paint. Now it’s time to draw up a plan. Use grid paper and note measurements, windows and doors, and utilities. Also determine how much room you’ll need for your car. Mark zones for storing your things remembering garden tools work best near the door. Rubbish and recycling should be within easy reach but seasonal items can be stored out of the way. Keep in mind some zones might overlap with overhead storage or shelves. Then select storage options that include bins, boxes, tool

hanging systems, bicycle hangers, shelving and support brackets and cabinetry. When it comes to garage ceiling storage, you have a couple of different choices for what will work best given your specific needs. There are several things to take into consideration depending on which of those choices you make. You can certainly take advantage of an empty ceiling space by adding an overhead garage storage system of your own. This is a great way to store bulky or seasonal items. If you choose to go this route, you can build your own simple storage system or buy a product made specifically for the purpose of storing items in the overhead space in garages. You might choose a storage system that hangs from the rafters or the ceiling joists, for

example. Individual ceiling-mounted units are available in assorted sizes and weight capacities. Most systems have an adjustable height, as the distance between the ceiling and an open garage door varies from one garage to another. 

WHAT’S ON TREND

Still struggling? Just remember these top five tips and you will be on trend: Floors:

Wall-to-wall carpets never took off in Sweden and all truly Scandinavian interiors will have a wooden, preferably light coloured, floor in all rooms apart from the bathroom.

Colour:

White walls and cool grey and blue textiles definitely gives off the right ambience of a Scandinavian interior however there are more colourful textiles

from the likes of Marimekko in the 60’s pop vein and the much more decorative Josef Frank from the 40’s. Both very different, both very Scandinavian.

Materials:

Wood, and don’t be afraid to show it. Incorporate cladding on walls and even ceilings to add texture and warmth. Use a grey oil to take the yellow away from woods like pine or oak.

Form:

Clean lines from architecture to furniture.

Function:

A truly Scandinavian interior is very liveable. 

r is coming provide handsome winter silhouettes. They will also provide shelter for overwintering insects. Once your borders are clean and tidy, spread a thick layer of compost, bark chips or well rotted manure across them. Don’t worry about digging it in - let the worms do the hard work for you.

Lawn maintenance

If your lawn looks slightly worse for wear then autumn is the perfect time to revitalise it. Remove thatch (old grass clippings) and moss using a spring tined rake and add it to the compost heap. If you have large amounts of moss then you may want to use a moss killer first. In areas that receive a lot of wear (such as paths and play areas) the soil can become compacted. Improve drainage and aeration by making deep

holes with the prongs of a garden fork every 10cm across the entire area. A sandy top dressing can be brushed in afterwards, followed by an application of autumn lawn feed to prepare your lawn for the cold winter months. Autumn is a great time to lay new turf too, giving it plenty of time to establish before next summer.

Make leaf mould

Leaf mould adds structure and organic matter to your soil. Most leaves from deciduous trees and shrubs will rot down to make lovely leaf compost in a couple of years, although some leaves will take longer than others. Oak, alder, beech and hornbeam rot fairly quickly while sycamore, walnut, horse chestnut and sweet chestnut may take a little longer. Continue >

10 | HOUSE TO HOME Shredding the leaves first will help to speed things up. Evergreens are best shredded and added to the compost heap as they are very slow to decompose. Construct a large bin out of wire mesh in a sheltered spot to collect your leaves in, or if space is limited simply use plastic bin liners with holes punched through the sides to let in the air. Fill the leaf bin/ bags with leaves and sprinkle with water. Tie the tops of bags and give them a good shake before stacking them out of sight and forgetting them for two years. If you are using a leaf bin you will need to remember to dampen the leaves occasionally if they become too dry. Once the leaves reach a crumbly texture they can be spread as a mulch throughout your borders.

Clear out compost bins

The autumn clear up of borders and vegetable plots always generates a lot of plant material for the compost heap. Autumn is an ideal time to clear out last year’s compost and use it around the garden to make room in

compost bins for this season’s garden waste. If your compost isn’t quite ready then turn it to improve decomposition, and create a new heap — you can never have too much compost!

Plant evergreens:

Evergreens form the backbone of the garden, providing structure and year-round interest, so the more evergreens in your garden, the better it will look in winter! With warm soil and cooler conditions, autumn is the perfect time to fill those gaps in your borders. For a more formal look, why not invest in some box or yew topiary. Lonicera nitida, bay and holly can also be clipped into formal shapes and make excellent evergreen hedges too.

Lift tender species

Make sure that you lift those tender species such as Begonias, Dahlias, and Cannas before the first frosts threaten. Cut back the stems and gently lift the tubers/ rhizomes from the ground. Clean the soil from them and store them in trays of dry compost or sand, with just the top of crown visible. The trays can be kept

in a cool, frost free place over winter until they can be replanted when the spring arrives. In very mild areas it may be possible to protect tender species without lifting them. Simply cover the crowns with a thick blanket of mulch.

Net ponds

Decomposing leaves can turn your pond water foul and block filters on pumps. Save effort later on by catching leaves before they fall into your pond. Simply spread a fine meshed net across the pond and pin it down with bricks. The leaves can be added straight to the compost heap or collected

to make leaf mould.

Maintain garden equipment

Before you store your lawn mower at the back of the shed, it is well worth sending it for a service to ensure that it is in perfect condition when you need it next spring. Shears and secateurs need sharpening — you can do this yourself or send them away if you prefer. Spades, forks and other tools will benefit from a good wash. Dry them thoroughly and oil the metal parts to prevent rust. Wooden handles can be cleaned and protected with linseed oil. 

eco living

by Sheryl Stivens We can all make a difference at home.

Here are 6 eco living tips • Are you planning on building, renovating or landscaping in the next 12 months? Make sure you include a handy place for your red-lidded and yellowlidded wheelie bins. • Install a rain tank to store water collected from your roof to use on your garden. Your vegetable garden will be even more productive and your water tank will help buffer the effects of big downpours of rain on your stormwater pipes. • Mulch your gardens with layers of soaked newspapers topped with coffee grounds, pea straw,

lawn clippings or bark chips to hold moisture, protect your soil and reduce the need for watering. • Recycle leftover paint. The chemicals and pigments in paint aren’t nice to swim in; so rather than pouring them down the drain, drop them off at the Resource Recovery Park. • Reduce foodwaste. Get creative with leftover food and plan your weekly food shopping list to minimise waste and save money. • Revamp your compost bin or set up a worm farm or bokashi bucket for food scraps. Help is only a phone call away on 0800 627-824 or come along to the monthly FREE compost demo at the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park. Email sherylstivens@gmail.com for details.

Recycle more at rural sites What do I put in the yellow-lidded bins? • Plastics (numbers 1-7 except for polystyrene meat trays) • Paper [all paper magazines, junk mail newspapers etc] • Cardboard [flattened] • Steel and aluminium cans Have you see the new large yellow-lidded bins at the Rural Recycling sites throughout the Ashburton District? You can put all of the above materials in the one yellow-lidded bin including your household plastic containers 1-7 (except for polystyrene and meat trays). This makes recycling so much easier. The yellow-lidded bins are for the same recycled materials as the proposed new yellow-lidded wheelie bin collection in the urban areas. The materials are collected and transported to a mechanical sorting facility for processing just as they are in our cities.

Flooring Choosing new flooring for your home can be a daunting process given the number of options that are now available. All products have an ideal purpose, but most times it depends on a couple of things when you choose new flooring. Firstly, the area you are putting it in and secondly, the budget you have available. Carpet Carpet is a tried and true option, but there are now a greater selection of fibres than ever before. These range from traditional wools, to solutiondyed nylons (SDN), to the newer PET soft-touch yarns. One advantage of carpet is that there is also a huge range in price, so whether you are just after something inexpensive to make do for a couple of years, or want to spend a bit more on

something luxurious there is always something for you. Just remember that with carpet you generally get what you pay for! Vinyl Sheet vinyl is a great option. These come in a massive range of colours and patterns so there is always something to suit the look you are after and fit within the budget that you have. Also, as with carpet, vinyl ranges from inexpensive products to quality, hard-wearing products that will last. An advantage of sheet vinyl is that it can be a very costeffective option for hard flooring. Vinyl Planks/Tiles Vinyl planks and tiles are a great way to create a little bit of individuality in your home. These are a good, hard-wearing product that looks fantastic and

last really well. One advantage of vinyl planks and tiles is that if you damage one plank or tile you can quickly and easily lift and replace the individual tile rather than the whole room (which you would have to do with sheet vinyl). You can also let your imagination run wild and create a design unique to your home. Laminate Laminate flooring is becoming very popular nowadays. The advantages of laminate flooring are its durability, ease of cleaning and colour stability in high sun areas. The appearance of laminate flooring has become so realistic that it is often mistaken for real wood. A foam underlay provides cushioning and sound absorption. The superior-wear surface means that they resist normal wear and tear with ease.

Ceramic Tiles Ceramic and porcelain tiles have been popular for many years. They are very good in wet areas such as bathrooms and laundries as they won’t lift or buckle if they get wet. They are also good in high sun areas as they are not affected by the UV rays the way some other products are. Ceramic tiles can also be used to create a custom design in your home. Although they can be more expensive than some of the hard flooring options they are certainly one that will last. So next time you are after new flooring for your home, or simply need some advice, come and see the great team at Skip-2-It Flooring Xtra and let us help you with your next project!

Get floored with top quality flooring options from SKIP-2-IT FLOORING XTRA Whether you are redecorating a single room, renovating an entire house or building a new home, we can help you create your dream home with exciting styles and designs. Solar PV What is solar PV? Solar PV (Solar Photovoltaic) effectively uses the light from the sun and turns it into electricity, reducing your energy consumption and power bill at the same time. It does not have to be sunny for the panels to be working and they will continue generating electricity on an overcast day. There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding the sun’s heat or lack of in New Zealand. Solar panels will actually be less efficient in extreme temperatures. The cost of installing a system is the same on an existing home as it is a new home and will only vary depending on size. Why go solar? Power prices have risen around 5 per cent a year since 2001 and look to continue to rise for years to come. When you install a solar PV system you are essentially reducing your power bill for

the next 25-plus years. A lot of consumers who have installed solar PV enjoy the feeling of reducing their dependency on the energy retailers and having to give them less money each month. How to purchase the right solar system? Quality product – The two main components of a solar PV system are panels and the inverter. The panels generate the DC electricity and the inverter converts it into AC electricity which we use in the home. The things to look for when purchasing, are quality panels and a quality inverter. In order to select the right panels it is recommended going with a well known manufacturer. The reason for this is simple, it gives you some confidence the warranty will be honoured if required. Installation

When installing solar you are committing to a long-term purchase, therefore you need to ensure it is installed right the first time by competent installers. Solar installs are a specialised field and while all other systems may be working on day one they may not be in time to come due to poor installation and component failure. Compliance is proving a major hurdle with some installers of late. And under scrutiny from the local network company there are multiple systems that are not being livened due to incorrect installation. Auric Energy has a great reputation with network companies and have undertaken a significant number of solar installs, both big and small. System sizing It is imperative that a solar system is sized correctly for the consumer. Energy retailers do not pay huge amounts for the power

Advertising feature that is exported to them, hence the need to reduce this figure where possible. Most systems should be sold with some sort of energy diversion equipment. This means that when a system is exporting it can be diverted to other devices in the home to avoid excess export. The future? The future of solar is a bright one. With energy prices forever increasing, their viability is always on the improve. There seems to be some smoke in mirrors in the media, particularly from energy retailers, questioning the viability or lack of for solar PV systems. The irony is, however, Mighty River Power, which is one of New Zealand’s largest generators and retailers of electricity has just purchased one of New Zealand’s largest solar PV businesses, indicating that perhaps behind the scenes they do believe in the concept.

Cure your hallway

In today’s drive for efficiency of space, hallways become just a path from one room to another and no space is spared. The narrowness of our hallways often lead to them feeling like a claustrophobic dim space even though they can often be the first area presented in a house when people come through the front door.

Here are some top tips to avoid a dingy confined space:

• Create the focus at the end of the hallway. • Celebrate that length and the unique feature that a long, narrow space gives you. Maybe it’s not the best place for art and/or family photos, where one might normally want to stop and look at the images there. Walls of photos or art are best in a place where you can step back a bit and view them. • Accentuate your long hallway and deliberately call attention to it. Make it special and beautiful by directing the interest to the end of the hallway - not the sides.

Here are seven ways to do just that:

1. Put a mirror down at the end to extend the hallway even more and possibly reflect some light down there. 2. Paint that end wall a contrasting accent colour so that it provides a stopping point. 3. Add some artwork or graphic pattern at the end to make a statement. 4. Lay a long runner on the floor that draws your eye to the end. 5. Create wall finishes that run the entire length of the hallway. 6. Paint or do some kind of ceiling treatment that works like the long runner, drawing your eye down to the end. 7. Repeat some special light fixtures that progress down the hall. Don’t chop it up or add even more on to the side walls coming in on you by creating interest there. Instead, direct the focus to the end. Celebrate the unique vibe your hallway provides. Make it beckon and call you to investigate beyond. Make it pull you in and through where you won’t notice that narrow, claustrophobic

feeling. You’ll be so focused on what is happening at the end, what might be around the corner,

that you won’t notice the side walls. Make it a vista.
