Spring trends From flooring options, colour schemes, to rugs and blinds. The floors of any home take a beating ‌ from people, pets, spills and the elements. They are usually the first surfaces to reflect wear and tear from everyday activities so investing in floors that suit your lifestyle is important. There are hundreds of choices of carpets, tiles, laminates and vinyl and choosing the right one can be overwhelming. But a good flooring investment will last 20 years, keeping pace with your daily life while bringing a touch of class to your home.
Getting it right takes time, says Carmen Rooney of Skip-2-It Flooring Xtra, so be prepared to answer a few questions like how many people live in your home, if you have pets or are away a lot. In a world perfect for carpet, sneakers would be banned. Their tread tracks dirt into fibres and dirt is bad; all shoes are bad for carpets so it’s a good habit to take them off at the door. The alternative is to vacuum daily. Yeah, nah. >

Rooney says one of their most popular products is QuickStep, laminated floorboard planks that are quickly installed over a foam underlay. They come in a huge range of colours and even have a variety that can be used in wet areas. A light floor can make a room seem larger, a dark floor may have the opposite effect. Quick-Step is a high density fibreboard, with four different layers with an overlay to protect against stains, impact, scratches, burns and household chemicals. It is durable, moisture-resistant and looks fabulous. “The thing about a wooden floor is that it is timeless. The world is your oyster when it comes to colour too,” Rooney said. Greys have been a popular colour in 2017, a trend she sees going forward into next year. “There has also been a noticeable shift though from blacks and dark charcoals to lighter, warmer tones.” Whether you are in the market for carpet or laminate, you need the right product that fits the purpose. Dusty pinks and muted greens will continue to make their presence felt in homes next year, the fashion setters say. Both colours have been seen on the catwalks and sported by trendy people; there are putty pink jeans, dusty pink purses and pale pink coats. And it is no longer a colour just for girls, pink is for everyone. It’s been 10 years since pink went out of favour for being “the colour of girls” and now it’s less about froth and childishness and more about warmth and good feelings. Those pinks and muted greens are inviting and work well with greys. Green soothes, uplifts and makes everything around it look good.

In a world perfect for carpet, sneakers would be banned. So what does that mean for your home? Designer Hayley French, in Flooring Xtra’s latest Lookbook, says new floors or colours on the walls can make a room nearly perfect; sometimes something is needed to pull it all together. A rug can do the trick. “Today’s homes are more often than not a series of spaces that link together. The kitchen, dining and living spaces all share the same walls, which can seem overwhelming or barren unless you break up the areas with a rug. The resurgence of hard flooring has also necessitated the need to include a rug as a stable part of your furnishings. I like to call it the icing on the cake.” French says choosing a rug can be daunting. Scandinavian neutrals are still dominating the home scene but there is a shift towards a Bohemian trend, with rich textiles combined with white walls. Rugs can add colour, pattern, texture, comfort, warmth and help quieten the space and anchor furniture. >

< Shutters and automated blinds are hot items on the window treatment scene right now. Skinny aluminium venetians all around the country are being replaced by chunky shutters with blades as big as 114mm; they are transforming rooms. Jo Skilling, from Colourplus Ashburton, said the shutters were beautiful, practical and durable and were custom made to fit windows or doors. When shut, they provide heat and noise insulation and the Luxaflex range comes in five paint finishes and 10 wood stain finishes. The shutters can be hinged for small and medium windows, or bi-fold for larger windows and doors. Sliders are also an option. “They look great and add privacy, security, sun and light control.” Automated sun shades and roller blinds are also big this season. Blinds can be opened or closed with a remote control so you don’t have to leave the couch. Luxaflex’s Q-motion rollershades can also be controlled by an app downloaded to your smartphone or tablet, great for when you are a long way from home. Q-motion is compatible with most home automation systems, is powered by battery but can also be adjusted by hand. Rollershades, sunscreens and duette blinds are all popular options, with the duette’s honeycomb construction is able to help winter insulation challenges.

Keeping your cool Heating your home is one of the most important aspects when building or renovating. Heat pumps are designed for ease of use and instant heat at the push of a button. By choosing a heat pump as your primary heat source you remove the yearly task of filling the wood shed, daily task of filling the wood basket and monthly task of replacing the gas cylinder. Even if you have an alternate heat source heat pumps are great for those cooler September and April days where you cannot justify (or be bothered) lighting the fire, Saturday mornings when you get up and read the paper and weekday mornings whilst you have your breakfast before work. They come in all shapes, sizes and colours and can even be hidden in your roof cavity by the way of a ducted system.
source a heat pump is not required but we are now finding that a lot of customers are installing these units just for air conditioning purposes. You can’t beat having a beer on the couch watching the cricket or going to sleep in a cool fresh climate.
Auric Electrical
Cooling One thing we tend to forget in New Zealand and especially Ashburton is the cooling aspect these units offer. With modern houses being built for the sun and with more and more
glazing going in, our houses are becoming hotter. This means relaxing on the couch and sleeping at night is not as pleasant as it should be. A lot of homeowners believe that because they have an alternate heat

Hygge The Danes are regularly acknowledged as the happiest in the world and hygge goes a long way to explaining why. While they have known the secret for generations, the rest of the world caught on last year and went mad for the trend. The Danish word (pronounced ‘hooga’) translates roughly to ‘cosiness’ and is, in a sense, a way of creating a warm environment that instils calmness and provides optimum levels of comfort. Think giant, oversized woollen knee rugs draped over you as you sit in your cosy sofa, drinking a cup of warming hot chocolate or tea. You might add a decadent cinnamon roll and then wrap up warm with scarves, gloves and hats for a wander in the great outdoors. Even the tourism board caught onto the buzz, with www.visitdenmark. co.uk writing about the ‘art of hygge’ and Oxford Dictionaries even short-
listed hygge as one of their Words of the Year in 2016. Hygge is also a wonderful way of banishing the gloom of winter. When you have a roaring fire and warm slippers waiting for you at home, suddenly battling that cold journey home feels that little bit better. And, of course, if you’re in Europe during winter, it culminates with Christmas. The festivities are ultimate hygge time with family meals, candles, mulled wine and twinkle lights a focal point of the season. So, if you need a bit of a pick-up to help you get through the rest of winter, take note from the Danes and embrace the hygge trend. Although, the insider word on the design street is that it’s soon to be eclipsed by the Swedish, lagom. This is the concept of “not too much, not too little,” or “enough, sufficient, adequate, just right.” Watch this space!

Scandinavian design The influence of Scandinavian design is nothing new, in fact, we’ve been inspired by their minimalist lines and neutral tones for years now. But, a new wave of the classic style has been emerging in magazines and decor stores lately and we’ve all been bitten by the bug. The movement focuses on simplicity and functionality and you don’t need to look far to spot it across Mid Canterbury and further afield. Think neutral tones with throw rugs, copper light fittings and simple, rustic elements that seem to magically encompass a vintage and modern feel all at once. Elle Decor lists the top Scandina-

vian trends as including giant paper lanterns, elegant sleek office spaces, punctuated by cacti and pops of colour with blue rugs and IKEA-style furniture. The trend takes nuggets of inspiration from the three Scandinavian design capitals of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, but it often branches out to include Finland and Iceland, too. They’re all currently under the global spotlight and we’re endlessly fascinated with its exciting music, food and cultural icons. Basically, Scandinavia is hot right now, and with a few simple touches, you can bring the elegance and simplicity right into your own home.

To Lake Hood for the good life STORY LINDA CLARKE • PHOTOS LAURA BAGRIE
It’s tough playing backyard cricket at Ben Wright’s Lake Hood home in the summer … you’ll need a kayak to fetch the balls that are hit into the canal at the edge of his property. His home on Waterton Point is a busy place in the warmer months, with friends bringing their jetskis and beers to fill in the long, warm nights in the best way possible. After all, a home in this water paradise just has to be shared. Water is a central theme in the 25-year-old’s life. His parents John and Jane are farmers in Methven and John has been the main player in the establishment of the Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Scheme.
Wright graduated from the University of Canterbury with a degree in mechanical engineering in 2015 and now works for Carrfields Irrigation; his Lake Hood home is both close enough and far enough away from work. He said Lake Hood was an ideal location to consider two years ago when he was looking to build. He had spent several years city living and wanted space and water. >

< The large 1450m2 section on Waterton Point, one of the first peninsula subdivisions in the new lake extension, appealed to the engineer because of its weird shape. He commissioned architects Chilton and Mayne of Ashburton to design a three-bedroom home “that was something a bit different. Three months later, with plans in hand, builders JKF Homes was pegging out the plot, which has views south-west to the Peels and mountains beyond. At the moment, Wright can lie in bed and soak in the snow-capped ranges. Construction happened over nine months, with Wright making decisions on materials and colours. The home has a wooden frame with traditional insulation and double-glazing throughout; there are three good-sized bedrooms, two bathrooms and an ensuite off the master bedroom, which also features a walk-through wardrobe. A smaller room is set up as an office, where Wright can work remotely. The subdivision has a fibre connection to the internet so access is no problem. The house is clearly positioned for canal living. Garage access is from the road, while a straight path leads to the front door and a high fence gives privacy and shields a small grassy enclosure in front of the kitchen. The kitchen is modern and sleek, with black countertops and white cabinets. You can eat sitting on chairs at the centre island or at the large wooden table with unobstructed views to the water. The walls are painted an off-white throughout, with a wood laminate flooring bringing warmth. The bedroom areas are carpeted. >

< A black leather L-shaped couch is a good spot to watch TV or chat in the winter, with the gas fire going; in the summer, doors slide open on to an outdoor area that leads down in steps to the cricket pitch and private jetty. Wright’s green kayak is always out, ready for action. Friends who bring their jetskis can launch them at public ramps then motor up the canal to Wright’s place. They can access the main lake by canal when they want more speed and thrills. Wright employed a landscaper to help with the outside work. Pin oaks are planted out the front, with dogwoods along the fence and magnolias as features. The exterior of the house is a combination of stained New Zealand-grown cedar and vertical shiplap weatherboard. The roof angles add another layer of interest. Wright said it was not a commonly-used material and ideal for his low-maintenance schedule. Inside and out, the house is modern and contemporary with touches of Wright’s personal style preferences obvious in the cushions, paintings and floor rug in the living room. “I did have some help from friends, but I have always been big on design.” On this engineering project, Wright gives himself a 9/10.

A growing community Lake Hood has firmly established itself on the residential housing radar of Ashburton, says real estate agent Paul Cunneen. “People are no longer asking why they should live there (Lake Hood, but why not,” real estate agent Paul Cunningham says. The first water-front homes were built in 2003 by a brave few keen to enjoy the new man-made lake; now the growing community is a mecca for outdoors people or those who love their water sports.
MASSIVE
“You can wake up in the morning and the water is on your doorstep. You can go for a bike, or run or a swim. “I would say 90 per cent of the people who have bought there are from within the Mid Canterbury district. Most have had some experience around the lake – they know someone who lives there and enjoys it or they have a real interest in water sports.”

There is also a café and bar, walking and biking tracks, tennis courts, swimming spots and public boat ramps. The lake boasts an international rowing course and is the training ground for Ashburton College and Ashburton Rowing Club crew; it also hosts dragon boat festivals, yachting and waterski competitions. Over the years many Ashburton people have traded their urban homes for a spot in the waterside paradise – commuting by day to their jobs 10 minutes away in town and returning to enjoy an evening activity on the water, or a bike or walk around the water’s edge. It is like permanently being on holiday, the converts say.

Cunneen said he had also sold houses to people living in Christchurch who wanted an easily accessible holiday home. “It has become a successful development.” The lake is named after prominent Mid Canterbury businessman Doug Hood, in recognition of his community contributions and is part of 90ha of aquatic playground. As well as lake-front and canal living, the development also offers semi-rural living set back from the lake. The curving shores, canals and peninsula areas provide over seven kilometres of lake frontage, with dedicated boat ramp areas as well as the option to build a private jetty at the end of each property.

Roller blinds Roller blinds today have a much wider range of colour and design than the roller blinds of old, and they also now have a variety of blinds for different functions. Sunscreen roller blinds make a definite difference in your comfort during the heat of summer by cutting down glare and heat. They protect your carpet, furnishings and artworks without completely blocking your views. Sunscreen fabrics are especially efficient at filtering visible light and UV rays (up to 97 per cent), thus increasing interior comfort and reducing reflections and glare on televisions or computer screens. Sunscreen blinds are also very useful in winter to block the glare of the low winter sun without blocking the light and warmth out completely, as drawn curtains do. The transparency of sunscreen blinds is affected by the colour that you choose. Contrary to what you
25
ING ESS T A IN EBR CEL IN BUS RS YEA
may automatically think, the darker the fabric the more you will see through the blind. The lighter the colour, the less. This is due to the sunlight reflecting off the lighter colours and making the holes in the weave seem smaller. Another option is sheer roller blinds. With more transparency than a sunscreen they offer privacy from neighbours or the road without enclosing the room. Our range of sheer fabrics have been specifically chosen for New Zealand’s harsh UV conditions and are available in a large range of textures and neutral tones. If privacy at night is required, consider pairing the sunscreen or sheer roller with block out rollers, curtains or a roman blind. All of our blinds are made to measure to fit your windows. This means they are customised according to your specifications regarding which side the control is on, and whether it is front or back rolled.
Depending on which fabric is chosen the roller blinds can be made up to 3m wide. For windows and
doors that are wider than that, we can use inline brackets to connect the blinds with one singular control. All rollers are fitted with co-ordinating bottom rail colours and shapes, which also match our large range of curtain tracks, rods and finials. For high or hard to get to windows, motorised blinds are now an easy and practical option and are now more affordable than ever. How to clean and stain your deck Over time your timber deck naturally loses its tannins and oils, making it look old and tired. This guide will show you how easy it is to bring your deck back to its former glory. What you’ll need Materials: • Deck cleaning product • Deck stain • Anti mould product (if required) • Turps (if using oil based stain) • Rags Tools: • Paintbrush • Hard bristled broom • Large bucket • Foam applicator and applicator pole • Paint roller tray • Hammer • Nail punch • Orbital sander (if any sanding is required)
Cleaning your deck •
• •
First start by giving your deck a good sweep. From here you can assess what preparation is needed prior to staining your deck. Now, hammer in any nails that aren’t flush with the decking. If mould is present, remove as much mould growth as possible by scraping with a stiff brush and apply an antimould product. Just read the instructions on the product you decide to use.
•
• •
•
In some situations, you may need to sand down your decking if there are splinters coming from your timber. Ensure you punch the nails presanding. Now clean your deck with a timber prep product to remove any dirt, grease, oil, wax and other surface contaminants. Again, read the instructions on the product you decide to use. Allow deck to dry completely before you move onto staining.
Staining your deck • •
•
•
Choose the type of stain you will use. Both oil and water based types are available. Next choose the stain colour. Depending on your timber type the colour may vary slightly so it’s best to take an offcut of your decking timber into store with you. If you’re using more than one can of stain, ensure you mix the cans together to ensure colour consistency. To ensure you don’t get stain on your house, use a paint brush to cut in along the edge of the deck where it meets the house. If you do get any on your house, wipe it off straight away
•
with turps if you’re using an oil based stain or water when using water based stain. Apply stain to deck with an applicator pad and pole. If need be, apply the stain between the decking boards or joins with a paint brush. Paint a few boards wide in a row to avoid a contrast in colours. Resist the temptation to apply excess oil. The time can vary depending on the weather but generally it’s best to stay off it for at least 12 hours. Check the label on your stain to see if you need to re-coat. Your yellow recycling bin is for the following clean items:
But what goes in each bin? Your three new bins are each designed for different recycling and waste items. It’s important you know what items can and cannot go in these bins and what you can do with items that cannot go in any of the bins.
Please do not put the following items in your yellow recycling bin. These can safely be dropped off at your local Resource Recovery Park: • Batteries • Aerosol cans • Polystyrene (including traditional meat trays)

Clear, green, amber and blue glass bottles and jars should be placed in your green crate
Your red rubbish bin is for items that cannot go in the yellow recycling bin or green crate, including: • Household waste • Polystyrene products (including traditional meat tray)
• Food scraps • Garden waste
Not all waste items can go in your rubbish bin, so make sure you dispose of these items correctly, or reduce your use of these items.
Glass will be taken to a different sorting centre for recycling than the items in the yellow bin. If glass is put in the yellow recycling bin, it can break in the back of the collection truck and contaminate the load of clean recyclables in there, so it’s important you put these glass bottles and jars in your green crate. Ensure your glass bottles and jars are loose, not bagged and do not put broken glass in the crate. Please do not put the following items in your green crate: • Window glass • Pyrex or ovenware • Drinking glasses • Optical lenses
• Opal glass • Medical or laboratory glass • Television or computer screens • Bottle lids
– Ashburton District Council
New wheelie bin service starts 1 September Collection Area The new system will replace the current bag and recycling crate systems operating in the district. If you already have a green crate, please keep it as you will not be issued a new one.
The new system is also being introduced to some properties that haven’t previously received Council kerbside collection services, including Lake Hood, Fairton and Winslow. Boundary maps are available online.
Be Ready Upon receiving your bins over the past month, you will have also received a Handbook. Please refer to it to learn how the new collection system works and when your bins will be picked up.

Mini meadows Planting for the bees! We all know we need to be looking after our hard-working bee populations. They are the vital pollinators that we rely on to produce food, but sadly much of the wild foliage and flowers they feed from is diminishing. September is Bee Aware Month, which is promoted by Apiculture New Zealand and encourages people to plant bee-friendly gardens. To attract them, Tuigarden.co.nz says you can plant calendula, marigold, sunflowers, poppies, cosmos, hollyhocks, fox gloves, clover, nasturtiums, comfrey, dahlias, echinacea, geraniums, honeysuckle and clematis. Not only will they help our bee populations thrive, the blooms will bring wonderful colours and smells to your own private minimeadow. But, do remember, some people can have a life-threatening allergic reaction to bees and bee-stings, so yates.co.nz suggests including a cute sign warning people of your bee-friendly garden. ď Ž

The shed isn’t dead Gone are the days of a dilapidated rickety old shed out the back with a few pieces of broken garden equipment and some old car pieces cluttering up the space. Men all over the country are seeking solitude away from the fancy and often feminine interior of the home to create a testosterone-fueled man cave, where a bar is essential, the large screen television is king and a weights bench in the middle of the room isn’t frowned upon. You’ve got to admit, it’s pretty hard to come by an extra room in your house dedicated to chilling. Chilling is an art that takes much practice and can only truly be mastered over time. Therefore it gets lost pretty quick in hustle and bustle of family life. The trickiest part about building a man cave is convincing the other half that it’s a good idea, however, as soon as a bunch of sporting memorabilia, a dart board and hunting

trophies surface, the notion of creating a blokes-only area outside all of a sudden becomes more appealing. It’s like a modern-day gentleman’s club, minus the decorum, and the wife is happy because she knows where you are and who you’re with. Sounds like an investment into the relationship and what partner wouldn’t appreciate that? Now that you’ve got the all important nod to get cracking on creating your haven away from the house, it’s time to get planning. stress after a hard day at work, and a pool table to keep the lads entertained when there’s nothing decent on telly, reminiscent of the cigar smoking Sinatra-style times, sipping single malt scotch between shots. And the ultimate in man-cave supremacy, your own bar, where a cold beer is always at arm’s length. Take some time to walk through the space and visualise what you want your man-cave to look like. Be realistic in your assessment of the space and function. Pick a centralised theme of your personal space, be it sports, hunting, music etc, and plan your furniture around making the most of the primary function. This should give you a good indication of if you can renovate your existing space, or if it will suit your needs to build from brand new. Consider plumbing and electrical costs and consult with a professional before tackling any of these areas yourself. Ask your mates to give you a hand, you never know, they might just have some bright ideas that you hadn’t thought of on how to maximise the space and if they have building experience, then even better. Once you find yourself immersed in your own backyard ‘ode to being a bloke’, you’ll wonder how you ever lived before it.

Outdoor living appeals That beacon of Kiwi-ism, Sir Graham Henry, showed off his Argentinian barbecue (parilla) on television. Such is New Zealand’s obsession with outdoor eating that more homes come resplendent with fancy cooking contraptions. Sir Graham had his parilla built especially for his Waiheke property. But where there’s a trend there’s always a business not far away. And there are plenty of Kiwi businesses offering to turn your backyard into a gourmet paradise. A real estate agent says a pizza oven, parilla or barbecue isn’t necessarily going to add more value to your property. But anything that dazzles buyers could well make them feel warmer towards it. “Depending on the location and its price point, an outdoor cooking facility may not necessarily add too much value,” Foster said. Most Kiwis would be happy to have
a built-in barbecue. Not as many are keen on a permanent pizza oven. For that reason Foster recommends clients use portable appliances for the staging, which can be taken with them. “While pizza ovens have become quite trendy and some people swear by them, they are not everybody’s cup of tea. Some people prefer their outdoor cooking to be less of a permanent fixture and therefore a barbecue on wheels makes a lot more sense,” Foster said. “They can position it according to wind and rain, to be more social while entertaining. It is quite a personal thing, so trying to add value by catering to the masses with a built-in outdoor cooking facility is not a given, again depending on what end of the market the property is in.” On the other hand, Foster said, outdoor living, and in particular indoor -outdoor flow do have a massive influence on the appeal of a property, the

size of the buyer pool and ultimately the value. “I’d go as far as saying Kiwis are obsessed with indoor-outdoor flow. Aspect is also very high on buyers’ agendas, so if there is the right combination of being well positioned for sun, indoor-outdoor flow and also a good barbecue/outdoor living area, you are on to a winner.” A real estate agent says that he always looks to add a barbecue, table and chairs to a balcony or ground floor patio if at all possible. It helps potential buyers imagine themselves living at the property and entertaining after work. This is a really important step for buyers, he said, who may have grown up in the quarter-acre paradise, but are moving on to becoming owner-occupiers, which is a growing market in Auckland. “If [buyers] see a barbecue it shows they can entertain and have people around and show off that space,” Murray said. Ground floor apartments often have patios and Murray has seen pizza ovens used in the staging as well as a barbecue. – NZME
