HOME Welcome to our September edition of House to Home! It’s wonderful to have a vision for your home and to see that vision carried out. In this issue we look at Paul and Anna Cartney’s stunning weatherboard home. The sophisticated yet inviting interior design is testament to the couple’s attention to detail. With a young family, the house needed to not only be a relaxing space for adults but also a functioning environment for all the family needs. With clever design, the couple have met their briefs and show what time and planning can achieve. Elsewhere as we head into summer it’s time to start looking at our outdoor areas and consider giving them a makeover. New Zealanders love outdoor entertaining but often we throw together an area without forethought. In all great outdoor areas, there is one common vision – establishing an area where the

Anna had only one prerequisite for her kitchen – that it was well lit, with windows, and this Paul achieved by designing a triangular peaked window above the back wall of the kitchen. THE TRIANGULAR PEAKED WINDOWS PROVIDE AN ABUNDANCE OF LIGHT
Continued from page 3 For Anna, the large granite island complete with LED lighting was a stunning addition (although it doesn’t get used very often) with the cleverly designed pantry off the side of the kitchen, incorporating everything you need to prepare food. Wonderful when entertaining, the pantry offers a bench top, cupboards and a sink so that dishes can be hidden as can all the messy preparation. Anna says the kids tend to put their breakfast together in there rather than messing up the kitchen. The dining area stretches out into a comfortable lounge where Anna likes to relax. There she can look out over the outdoor deck and lawn. Beside the dining room lies the perfect area for closing off the children’s clutter and noise. A cleverly designed rumpus room for the girls means they can run free, watch the telly and kick around as many toys as they want without disturbing the rest of the house.
THE DINING AREA STRETCHES OUT INTO A COMFORTABLE LOUNGE It also means that if unexpected guests arrive Anna can simply close off the rumpus room and the children don’t have to pack up their toys.

VERTICAL BLACK AND WHITE STRIPES ACCENTUATE THE POLISHED CONCRETE FLOOR
There is also a guest room and ensuite on the same level that is plain but still beautifully presented with a shuttered window above the bed the stand-out feature of the guest bedroom. Just off the living room and downstairs to the split level lies every man’s dream – Paul’s selftitled ‘man cave’. And while you might think it would be a macho testosterone drenched design, Anna’s exquisite tastes are again present so that it fits perfectly with the rest of the house while fitting Paul’s brief. Magnificent disco lighting and a fully integrated entertainment system make this a mecca for men and you can imagine Paul’s mates gathering around during the Rugby World Cup in the spacious room, lounging by the warm fireplace or sitting on the
red lounge suite which tastefully adds a dash of colour to the grey and white palette. So successful has the disco lighting been that Paul has had to give up the man cave for a daughter’s birthday and may have to give it up again during their teenage years! The two girls’ rooms are stylish yet fun. Both chose their feature wallpaper and their choices again complement the style of the house. Again clean lines abound with the use of shutters and roman blinds. And there’s a very special addition Paul created that you won’t find in any other house in the world apart from Privet Drive – a space under the stairs that backs into daughter Tamsin’s room that the family have titled the Harry Potter cupboard. beautiful bathroom – luxurious with vast polished tiles, floor to ceiling white shuttered windows and a double headed shower carrying through the white tiled clean cut design of the downstairs bathroom. With such a stunning bathroom you would never want to leave home again! Lighting throughout the house has been cleverly planned with help from Laser Electrical and in some cases has been made the central feature of a room. The lighting gives a warm spacious feel to the house and shows it can be a showstopper on its own rather than an add on at the end. Anna says the house could not have been achieved without the help of the professionals and was particularly impressed with Jo from Colourplus who knew exactly how to achieve the look she wanted. That, along with her husband Paul’s 25 years experience in the building trade and their combined design flair, made this breath-taking weatherboard beauty, perfection.

Brighten up that patio!
With the sun emerging after a long dark winter, so too do we want to spend more time outside, lounging luxuriously in a pretty space. Often our patio becomes our central outdoor dining area and there are many possibilities when it comes to creating magic. Here are some great ideas to get you started!
Choose a gathering place
Always start your patio design by choosing a space in the backyard with plenty of space for family and friends to sit and gather. This can be centred around anything from a fire pit, a shady tree, fountain or sculpture, a favourite piece of artwork; whatever your favourite part of your backyard, arrange seating to attract attention and make a
welcoming hangout spot. You will find all design flows from where you want to gather.
Heating
It pays to budget for outdoor heating so that the cooler night air does not put you or your guests off entertaining outside. There is a huge range of heating appliances available now but be sure that what you pick is not overbearing in relation to the size of your patio area. It should not fill the space but instead complement it.
Lighting
Be sure to use all available trees and shrubs to light your area. White Christmas lights hung as garlands along the trunk of a tree can give off a beautiful light. Be careful not to have too many colours – simple is always more
sophisticated. Be sure to check out the myriad of outdoor solar lights available as well as they can provide a cost effective way of lighting your area.
A fun game space
Consider putting in a small sand pit to play croquet on or how about a paved outdoor chess board? Let your imagination roam and create an outdoor game that looks aesthetically pleasing as well as providing endless hours of fun for your guests!
Creative ice chest
Every good patio has a novel ice chest. Consider finding a funky object from the second hand shop – or how about an old row boat that can be filled with ice and bevvies? There are a huge number of objects that could easily be turned into an ice chest
eg. an old suitcase, a half barrel.
Shade
Just as no-one wants to sit outside when it’s cold, no-one wants to bake under a hot sun too long either. Part of your budget should encompass having a shaded area where everyone can get out of the sun. Deciding the shape of your area will dictate what type of shade you use. For a quick fix a large umbrella can often do the trick.
Music
Music can add an ambience to your evening and provide you with a restful calm environment. It also serves as a great backdrop to conversation and can set the mood. These days there are many ornaments that house Bluetooth speakers that can look great in your garden settings.

Make your
own fire pit Nothing invites guests more than a cosy open fire on a cool summer evening. A fire pit doesn’t need to be expensive and can be made by your own hands in just four easy steps. Try this at home and be amazed by your results!
Outline your fire pit
Lay out the bottom ring of your stones in the grass where you want the fire pit to be. If you are going to use a metal ring, you can use that to build a few
stones around to find your circle. Remove a few stones so you have space between them, and use the spray paint to mark where the outside of the stones would hit. Remove those remaining stones and complete your painted circle.
Dig your fire pit
Use a shovel, mattock, or whatever other digging tool you need to dig out your circle 15cm deep. Depending on where you live, this will be an easier or more difficult task .

Fill your fire pit
Once you have a 15cm hole dug, you’ll want to pour your gravel into your hole until the gravel is level with the ground. The gravel will give your fire pit an important drainage area when it rains.
Build your fire pit
Place your first ring of stones around the edge of the gravel circle and use a rubber mallet to tamp the stones flat and even with each other. Again, if using
a metal ring you can keep that in the middle to make sure you are fitting your stones right up against the ring. When placing the second row of stones, place some masonry adhesive on the bottom of each stone and stagger the placement of the second row (the middle of each stone should sit on the end seams of the row beneath it). Use the rubber mallet to even and tighten the stone placement. Repeat the process with the third row.

Painting Painting a corrugated iron roof – top tips
If you are painting a new iron roof you will need to wash it with a degreaser before you start unless the roof is more then a year old and has weathered. This means that the oil from fabrication has worn away and the iron has been slightly etched through weathering. With unpainted iron you will need to prime it first with a suitable primer, this is also the case for any sheets of iron that may have been replaced on an existing roof. You will need to apply two coats of suitable paint, and the choice of colour is up to you but do remember lighter colours will reflect the heat and darker colours absorb the heat. Airless spraying is the quickest way to paint any roof and if you decide to paint your roof this way there is a technique to applying the paint. When you are
spraying you should spray about a metre wide section and work your way down the sheet, spray in the direction of the flutes in the iron. If you like you can use the joins in the iron as a guide, it is an easy way to tell exactly where you are at. Once you have worked your way down the sheet and completed that section move back to the top of the roof and repeat for next sheet of iron. You must keep a wet edge at all times and that is why you go back to the top of the roof before it starts to dry, if you decide to work back from the bottom to the top, the top part could have tacked off when you get back up there. You can buy rollers that are shaped like corrugated iron and they do work well, but you will still need to cut in all the corners and ridge caps. With some roofs you may need to run the brush down the join in the sheets as sometimes they are slightly raised and the roller will not get

g your roof If your roof looks really bad and just about all the colour has gone then you will need to seal the roof first. Most roof sealers/ primers dry clear. Make sure you apply plenty, you will need to give the roof a good coating to give it a chance to soak into the tile.
Tips for rookies this area.
Painting a tiled roof Generally when you are painting a tiled or shingle roof it is because all the existing glaze has worn off and the roof is looking a bit shabby. Some roofs will look better than you think once the cleaning has been done. With tiled roofs there is an issue with ridge capping, they may need to be fixed before you start painting and it is generally referred to as pointing and bedding of ridge caps. Most
will need re-pointing and some may need re-bedding. With rebedding they take off the ridge cap and re-bed it in a new mix of mortar. Pointing is where the ridge cap is not moved but the outer mortar is repaired generally with another layer of mortar applied over existing. If you have had any repairs like this done after you have cleaned the roof make sure you use your garden hose and give the roof a final clean - sometimes just a broom will do the trick.
When painting a roof make sure you are able to get back down from the roof without having to walk over wet paint. This can be avoided with a little planning before you start. If you are going to use an airless spray gun to paint the roof try to avoid painting on a windy day as there is always some over spray and it can be carried a long way in windy conditions. Check the weather forecast. You don’t want to paint your roof if it’s going to rain and if it is going to be hot you are best to start early.
HOUSE TO HOME | 11
Roof paint There are a few choices when it comes to roofing paint and you will need to decide what is best for you and also how much you are willing to spend. Water based roofing paints would be the preferred paint used for cement tiled roofs and shingle roofs but there are some paints on the market that are not suitable for drinking water. So if you do collect rain water from your roof do some research and ask before you purchase your paint if the paint is suitable for the collection of rain water. Oil based roofing paints are best suited for collecting rain water. If the roof is old and rusty it will help keep the rust at bay. Water based paints can be used on iron roofs but make sure any rust is treated well or it may appear again soon after painting.

Rolling

Advertising Feature
Roller blinds today have a much wider variety of colour and design than the roller blinds of old, and they also now have a variety of blinds for different functions. Sunscreen roller blinds make a definite difference in your comfort during the heat of summer by cutting down glare and heat. They protect your carpet, furnishings and artworks without completely blocking your views. Sunscreen fabrics are especially efficient at filtering visible light and UV rays (up to 97 per cent), thus increasing interior comfort and reducing reflections and glare on televisions or computer screens. They deliver excellent
protection against fading of furniture, flooring and appliances. Sunscreen fabrics can filter heat coming from the sun which in turns saves energy, by reducing air conditioning costs and improves interior comfort by maintaining lower temperatures. The transparency of sunscreen blinds is affected by the colour that you choose. Contrary to what you may automatically think, the darker the fabric the more you will see through the blind. The lighter the colour, the less. This is due to the sunlight reflecting off the lighter colours and making the holes in the weave seem smaller. Another option is sheer roller blinds. With more transparency than a sunscreen they offer
privacy from neighbours or the road without enclosing the room. Our range of sheer fabrics have been specifically chosen for New Zealand’s harsh UV conditions and are available in a large range of textures and neutral tones. All of our blinds are made to measure to fit your windows. This means they are customised according to your specifications regarding which side the control is on and whether it is front or back rolled. Depending on which fabric is chosen the roller blinds can be made up to 3m wide. For windows and doors that are wider than that, we can use inline brackets to connect the blinds with one singular control.
All rollers are fitted with coordinating bottom rail colours and shapes, which also match our large range of curtain tracks, rods and finials. If privacy at night is required, consider pairing the sunscreen rollers and sheer roller with block out rollers, curtains or romans. A huge range of curtain fabric is on hand in all sorts of patterns, colours and textures, which can be made into curtains with various headings and linings. Roman blinds can be installed with the upgrade of a chain controlled head rail for ease of use. With summer just around the corner, roller blinds are a great way to combat the heat and glare in your home or office.

Building Almost anyone can build a wood fence with good planning, some basic carpentry skills and the right tools for the job. The most difficult part may be trying to decide on the style of fence (there are many different types), the type of building materials and possibly some hard work.
Wood and nails Most fences are made of pressure treated wood and use only rust-resistant hardware such as hot-dipped galvanised or aluminium nails, galvanised bolts, screws, hinges and catches. Your fence will last longer.
Accuracy of design First you need to plot your
a fence
fence line. Unless you are marking joint boundary lines with your neighbour so as to share the cost, build the fence 3-5cm on your side of the line. This will eliminate possible boundary disputes with neighbours in the future. The best way to mark the line is with the survey you may have obtained when you bought your house. The accuracy of your fence line will determine the straightness of your fence so mark it carefully. Plot a fence line by marking each corner post with a solidly driven stake. Run a tightly drawn string line between the stakes, using the line and a level to locate sites for all posts. Mark each post spot with a temporary stake.
Make
yourself at home
Digging the holes
The next step is digging the post holes. If the posts are not set firmly or deep enough into the ground this may result in your newly built fence tilting, collapsing or heaving in cold weather. The posts must go well below the frost line to stay in place for years to come.
Placing the posts
Posts can be set in earth and gravel, but concrete provides the strongest installation. Check out the various concrete options as some are easier than others. Many people today use a mix that is just right for posts. All you do is pour the mix in the hole, add water and stir. Be sure to plan and time your work carefully, because if concrete seeps under the post it can retain moisture and speed decay. Begin with the corner posts – you’ll need them to plumb and align remaining posts. Plan one and a half bags of concrete mix for a 10cm post set 90 cm deep one bag for 60cm deep posts. Place a large, relatively flat stone in the bottom of the hole, then fill it with gravel (about 15cm), or until it is level with the top of the stone. Continue to plumb and align the post while adding concrete (5-7cm at a time), tamping it in. It is a good idea to add another 3-5cm of concrete above ground, sloping it away from the posts
for water runoff. Be sure to double check and triple check your posts for plumb and alignment. You’ll have about 20 minutes to move your posts after pouring. And wait at least two days before installing the rails and siding so the concrete is cured. Align each fence post so they are exactly vertical and in a straight line. The most common aligning method is the end post or corner post method, though it may be impractical for fences longer than 30 metres. Begin with your two corner posts. Position posts with their faces in flat alignment and plumb them with a level. Next, nail a 5cm-long 1 by 2 spacer block to each post - about 30cm above the ground. Stretch and tie a mason’s line between the posts, making sure the blocks are between the line and the posts. Then tie a second mason’s line at the top of the posts. With lines intact, set and align each post so their faces are exactly the thickness of a 1 by 2 (2cm) away from the lines. Before and after filling each post hole with concrete, check each post for plumb and alignment, using a level on two adjacent faces. Then tack on your desired railings!

Living wall g Hip, new and now!
Growing an organic living wall garden is weed-free, and easy to accomplish. A pretty wall garden can provide masses of organic flowers, food, and herbs for apartment dwellers and homeowners anywhere in the world. Living wall gardening has the fantastic benefit of being low maintenance and easy to access for harvesting and allow a gardener to plant edibles in a small floor space area by growing vertically. While well suited for urban gardeners with limited space, this technique is also amazingly accessible for small patio owners or home dwellers with tall fences surrounding their properties. Build an organic living wall garden on fences, walls and gates. Gates, in particular, offer a unique growing area. Growing

herbs, vegetables, and pollinator attracters are great living wall ideas for sunny areas, but it is also possible to grow vegetative plants of all types in the partshade which is definitely a common condition for side gated areas on many homes. Finding the right living wall system and plants to fit your unique planting requirements will help you succeed at growing – you can make your own living wall or purchase a unit that will work for your garden. Leafy vegetables such as Swiss chard, lettuces, kale, arugula, beets, and vines do remarkably well on organic living walls even if planted in shade to part shade. Herbs work great as well. A living wall garden can contribute heavily to a family’s culinary needs and have the added benefit of being chemicalfree and weed-free.

• deflecting water away from the walls during heavy rain • providing the building with an extra layer of insulation, so cutting down on energy loss and decreasing in heating requirements, even in modern, well-insulated homes • helping to keep homes cool in summer. Unlike brick and concrete walls, green surfaces don’t store up the sun’s energy in the daytime and release it as night-time in the same way • offering great aesthetic benefits • providing habitats for insects • contributing to improvement of urban air quality • contributing to reduced noise pollution

gardens greening). Claddings made from plants such as pyracantha or ceanothus can provide many of the benefits offered by more complex systems. At the other extreme are engineered, planting systems (indirect greening and living wall systems). These often consist of modules fixed against a wall that contain soil or media for the plants to grow in. These often require irrigation systems and may need professional installation and maintenance. To be more precise, the types of green wall have been categorised as: • Direct greening is a system where a self-attaching climber utilises the substrate of the façade for support and, sometimes, nutrition. • Indirect greening includes some form of engineered solution, from trellises to wires for the climbers to use; thus
providing a gap of insulating air between the building and the plant. • Living wall systems (LWS), finally, are constructed with planter boxes or felt; these do not require the plants to be climbing, they often need to be irrigated and plants for intensive green roofs are frequently suitable for these systems.
Choosing and constructing
Decide how you wish to plant your green wall. There are various systems available, according to the size of your wall and budget. Low cost and simple to install • Direct greening: the simplest way of greening walls by planting climbers, wall shrubs or fruit trained as espaliers or fans Medium cost and DIY skills required • Indirect greening: This is within the skills of most competent
DIYers and requires the surface to be first clad with wires or trellis. Climbing plants are then grown against it • Living wall systems: For smaller budgets, there are simple grow-bag-type products for walls or you can plant up one or more small panels that can be added to, depending on space and budget. These are available from garden centres. Introduce the plants at as small size as possible, ideally as plugs. Establishment is likely to be more successful at this stage of development Higher cost, professional installations • Indirect greening: Large scale installations of wire, trellis or supports, such as covering the side of a house. It is the scale that makes this more expensive and needs professional installation.

• Living wall systems: can use plants grown in cells containing compost or other growing media, which are connected to drip irrigation. Harvested rainwater can be used with some systems. These are installed by specialist companies. Green walls can be installed indoors with additional artificial lighting
Choosing plants
• If the wall you are about to add plants to receives less than half a day of sun in mid-summer, choose plants for shade • To simplify planting and watering needs, try to choose plants that have similar light and moisture requirements to the conditions on offer
When to plant green walls
Spring is the best time to plant because plants are coming into active growth and will establish quickly. • Maintenance & repairs • Painting • Carpentry • Spouting • Water blasting • Handyman services • Renovations • Fencing & decks • Insulation • Rural & urban
