elcome to another bumper edition of House to Home. We might be a little biased, but we’re incredibly proud of this publication, which we put together twice every year, which allows its readers a small insight into the world of building your own home and the love and passion that comes with it. There’s a huge amount of work behind the scenes to get a publication like this together, from the committal to advertising from some amazing clients to our incredibly talented team of journalists and production staff who have made this edition look and feel simply stunning. But of most importance is the people who allow us the privilege of being able to walk through their home and learn about the thoughts and ideas behind the finished project. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea to have their homes opened up to the wider community, but we are lucky in the fact that so many people from this district are happy to do just that – and tell their stories in the process. So from us, to them, a huge thank you. We hope you enjoy everything that this edition of House to Home has to offer.

Colour, life and energy resurgence in demand from consumers with growing numbers of people keen to source furniture that was made to order from Christchurch manufacturers. “People are starting to look at investment furniture again and if you have a piece of furniture that’s structurally good, then it’s worth recovering it,” Rosa said. Textured fabrics were becoming popular with velvet making a big comeback. “It’s a bit of an odd one, but people love the feel of it.” Colours coming through for furniture and walls were the earthy tones, including khaki green and navy. Florals are big. “People are finally over a grey and white home, they’re wanting colour, texture and full rooms of patterned wallpaper rather than a feature wall,” she said. Colour – dusky pinks, duck egg blue and mustard were big and for people unsure about using colour in drapes or furnishings, there were opportunities to go earthy or to provide that colour with cushions, throws and accessories.

Upcycling, recycling and a return to nature are the keys to creating interiors that will take homes into 2020 and beyond, says interior designer Rosa Watherston. In the constantly changing world that is interior design, the Redmonds Ltd designer said that the emerging trends for the next year are probably some of the most significant since the monochrome palettes of grey and white became almost an interior design staple. What’s on the horizon for home interiors is exciting Rosa said, because the new trends are quite wide in that they include not only dark and neutral shades but also plenty of colour and bold floral fabrics for walls and windows. Eclectic is the word that comes most readily to mind, she said. “And people are a lot more mindful today about the environment, they’re into recycling rather than getting rid of everything and buying everything new.” New Zealand made was also undergoing a

From P3 For anyone nervous about going bold, something as simple as a floral blind or a interesting splash back in a kitchen was a good way to introduce colour, Rosa said. The new trend to painting a full room in a bold colour or using wallpaper on all four walls was an exciting one and a move away from the more conservative feature wall look that had been around for a while, she said. While interior design colours often followed fashion, the investment in interiors was significantly higher and that made many people quite cautious about adopting new colours, styles and trends. In a rural community tastes were often a little more conservative than in a large city, but Rosa believes the new wave of colours, patterns and textures are so exciting they will be quickly adopted by people in the Ashburton District. “It’s my job to inspire people and with all the TV shows around now, people can see how they can pull a room together themselves. And they can, but it’s also good to seek a little help”. The latest trends weren’t for everyone, Rosa said, the colours and fabrics chosen for a home had to suit a person’s home and their lifestyle, she said. “It’s important to decorate a room for its use and function because a home is a place to be lived in, not just looked at.” Changing a room to give it a more modern look didn’t necessarily mean stripping everything out and starting again, Rosa said. ‘A fresh coat of paint, a new rug, a side table or some accessories in the latest trend colours might be all that’s needed.” Another option would be to wallpaper a full room with a textured paper to add interest and

a modern look. And sometimes all it took was to be a little clever with the layout of furniture, she said. “Sectional couches are great, but in some rooms I like a sofa and chairs because you can mix them up in terms of space and colour.” In terms of window treatment, roller blinds

had been big for a while and were very practical, but interior shutters were also popular. Curtains, however, were perfect for adding a warm, homely effect to a room, particularly if the fabrics used were in the new florals. “We’re moving away from the sterile clean lines towards colour, life and energy.”

Come on over!

Interior design trends also spill over into flooring and there has been a marked swing back to wool carpets as part of the trend towards more natural fabrics. Laminate flooring with textured rugs was also a big trend at the moment, Rosa said. “It’s about creating an environment that’s

HOUSE TO HOME

warm and cozy. The earthy warm look all adds character.” And sometimes that cozy, character look and feel can come with a happy blend of old and new furniture. As an interior designer, it was exciting working with clients to help them bring their

ideas together for a new home or a refurnished room, Rosa said. The challenge was always to marry what a client loved and wanted in their home with what was the trend of the moment. “But I don’t do on trend so much because it’ll date quickly. Some trends come and they stay

5

and I believe the earthy tones and pinky tones will be around for a while.” Like clothing, the colours and fabrics used in a home needed to be changed to keep a room alive, Rosa said. “Refresh your home after five years or so because by then you’re probably over it.

Keep change coming, add and change and put things in other rooms but don’t waste things, but if you’ve still got everything the same after seven or 10 years, then it’s time for a change.” A investment in your home is an investment in your life because it’s the place you spend most of your time, she said.

It is clear they love living in their modern, new house on Carters Road. They bought 12,000m2 on the corner of Carters Road and Allens Road seven years ago, and carved off a 2311m2 chunk to build the

house, which has five big bedrooms, two living areas and a living/dining room. At 475m2, the house is big, but it doesn’t feel oversized. In fact, it is perfect for them. The garage is spacious, with room for four cars, plus gym equipment and plenty of storage. out as music is piped to this area too. Dave and Nicky enter the house from an internal door in the garage, but visitors knock on the red front door and are invited into a spacious foyer that leads off to different areas. The couple had previously built a home and accumulated ideas over the years for their next one; a foyer was on their wishlist and it has wow factor, from the bold, patterned wallpaper to the artistic, wire light fixtures. continued over page

Above and above right – The couple’s master bedroom leads to a luxury bathroom featuring a shower with body jets. Left – A separate shower room, with fun LED lights, is part of the main ablutions area. Right – A blue backsplash and feature wall in the kitchen contrasts the white and light-filled kitchen space.

From P7 Left and up the stairs leads to a teenagers’ pad/party room above the garage. Straight ahead will take you to two spacious bedrooms (occupied by their sons Matthew and Connor when they are home) and an ablutions area that incorporates separate shower, toilet and basin areas. Heading right will take you to the couple’s master suite, guest bedroom and office (easily a bedroom, but home to Dave’s paperwork).

Open the double doors to the living space and you will find a spectacular light-filled area that incorporates the open-living kitchen, a dining area and lounge. The kitchen and island feature a cathedral ceiling, leading to an outdoor dining area. Head left to the media room, which is wired for sound and will no doubt be well used in the coming Rugby World Cup. The house was designed by architect Marcus Durkin and Dave and Nicky tweaked

his plans over several months to make it more practical. They added a storage cupboard under the stairs for Nicky’s large collection of Christmas decorations and other clever nooks, like charging stations, a tall wine rack and spirit drawer (each bottle has its own cubby hole). It’s big, but it feels homely and cosy. There is ducted air-conditioning throughout, with heat provided by heat pumps and underfloor heating as needed. There are high studs,

plenty of fun LED lighting and double-glazed windows. Dave said the house ended up being bigger than they planned but they have no regrets. The three main bedrooms all have outdoor access and all five can be individually climate controlled. The rooms are also all wired for TVs and computers. One bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe, while the master has a walk-through wardrobe and luxurious ensuite, including a

shower with an overhead rain head and body jets. The hot-water cylinder is heated by solar panels in the summer and is in a storage and electrical brain room, which houses the controls for the underfloor heating and music system. Dave said he spent a lot of time researching heating, lighting and wiring options, to make the house future-proof. There is also an element of fun, with sensor

lights in the hallways, LED lights in one of the showers and in the kitchen. The kitchen does feature his favourite appliance, the inbuilt coffee machine. A spacious pantry houses the refrigerator, one of the two dishwashers and food stores. A vac pan in the pantry floor sucks up crumbs that are swept in its direction. mean any bugs drawn to the light stay up in the roof space. Nicky, with help from Colour Plus, chose the tones used throughout. They are neutral and tasteful, and vary in the different zones. The couple are keen gardeners and their work in the green space on the western side of the house is clever. They have created a mature garden in only a few years through the careful transplanting

of shrubs and trees. They have been both smart and thrifty. They shifted a complete photinia hedge, that was about to be ripped out by a friend. It now forms a green screen from the road and gives privacy. Dave said it was a big project for their builder Simon Ross and they were onsite regularly during the 18-month process. The end result is a beautiful and practical home that provides some luxuries to enjoy at the end of the working day.

Walls of beauty By Megan Gnad Ashburton Guardian

No matter the size of your property, there’s always room for a garden, as the new trend in vertical gardens teaches us. They can also be produced for smallscale properties, or recreated as living walls, which you may have spotted popping up all over our bigger cities to create green spaces. This is a trend that is taking off across the globe and recently brightened up the backgrounds and bare space at the famed 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. For the home gardener though, there’s plenty of options that can be as simple as constructing some sturdy framing, or shelving and making sure it’s safely and securely attached to a wall. Then the fun starts. Keep a look-out for pots and vessels to upcycle and decide what kind of theme you want to create for your new garden. Often, cascading succulents are favoured for their low maintenance, but another option to try is a vertical herb garden to save time and money on your supermarket bill. Not to mention, the difference in taste straight off the vine. Cherry tomatoes and strawberries also grow well, and make picking the fruits of your labour a breeze. Grow bags, which are hung on a wall, are also available to make this even easier. There are also some fantastic modern framing designs popping up for purchase, and by adding a few rustic terracotta pots, and radiant green indoor plants, you’ve modernised your space with little effort. Before taking on your vertical garden project, there are a few important things to consider – water dispersal, securing correctly, and insulation, so head online to look up some of the great DIY tutorials, or ask at your local garden centre about how you can build your own wall of beauty.

The Block NZ: Hot stuff! By Megan Gnad Ashburton Guardian

A stunning 1930s Georgian-revival fire station has been the focus of this year’s The Block NZ, with the renovation of the high-end apartments resulting in plenty of design magic. Season eight of the popular DIY show finishes tomorrow night and if you’re one of the watchers who are only in for viewing the final, here’s a recap of all involved in The Block. Four teams have been on a huge journey, hoping to demo, re-build and design their way to the top. They were: Wellington husband and wife duo, Lisa and Ribz, partners from Wellington, Stacy and Adam, best mates from Waikato, Ethan and Sam, and married couple from Turangi, Sophia and Mikaere. This time, the project was the renovation of five apartments situated in the old firehouse building in Kingsland, central Auckland. Overlooking Eden Park, the fire station was decommissioned in 1972 and subsequently transformed into an 18-room boarding house. Since The Block NZ team came on board,

they worked hard to bring the building up to modern building standards. Not only was the roof removed and the inside completely gutted, they reinforced the structure with 1.5km of steel beams, used 30 truck-loads of concrete and added a new level on top. Mark Richardson returned as the show host and Shelley Fergusson as challenge host, with all reno work overseen by Peter Wolfkamp. Joining the show for the first time was judge Lizzi Whaley, CEO and creative director of Spaceworks Design Group, who has many design accolades under her belt. Lizzi joined long-standing judge, Jason Bonham. Now, at the end of the 12 weeks, the teams’ apartments are being put up for auction where they’ll take home any profit made over the reserve. The team that earns the highest profit above reserve will also take home the $100,000 grand prize. Host Shelley Fergusson says the Firehouse’s eclectic history and spectacular views make it high-density living with a difference. The Block NZ: Firehouse final and auction screens on Three, tomorrow night from 7pm to 8.35pm.

LISA, 37, & CHRIS, 34 WELLINGTON Lisa and Chris (aka Ribz) have spent the past 10 years honing their skills by renovating and decorating their own home to their personal styles. Print technician Ribz is the selfdescribed builder of the pair, while caterer Lisa excels in decorating and sourcing the best purchases. The husband and wife duo are passionate about their friends, family and having plenty of fun. Ribz says his strengths lie in his DIY skills, patience and hard-working attitude, while Lisa brings organisation and design to the team. With three children and a dog waiting for them at home, they admit being away from them is a challenge, but they’re loving renovating every single room on The Block NZ.

STACY, 25, & ADAM, 25 WELLINGTON Wellingtonians Stacy and Adam met nine years ago while studying at Massey University. The pair now own their own home, and design is their speciality, with social influencer Stacy running her own design business and Adam working as a senior concept designer for Weta Workshop. While Adam knows his architecture and can handle the lack of sleep that the show will bring, he relies on his practicality and composure to get him through the challenges. When Stacy isn’t busy creating content, you can find her volunteering for the SPCA, and will bring her budgeting skills, time-management and attention to detail to the table. The creative pair have previously dabbled in DIY on their own home with mixed results – they accidentally painted their house the wrong colour!

Representing the project manager side of the team is Ethan, or Eats as he’s often called, who is proud of his dedication to building and likes spending his time away from the construction site travelling. While Ethan says the pressure is testing, the best friends are confident that their tradie skills, project-managing experience and fast-paced working style will live up to the high standards they set themselves.

Wild side of life By Megan Gnad Wallpaper has most certainly made a comeback in design circles, but perhaps not as you may remember from years gone by. Think big, bold and beautiful, statement pieces and murals. Basically, it’s art from floor to ceiling. The tropical theme is still huge, with elaborate palms, ferns and greenery taking centre stage, as well as plenty of birds of paradise, and vacation-inspired luxury. For something more restful, you can explore the clean, satisfying lines of Scandinavian design, geometric influences, or add mood and intrigue with winter woodland scenes. If you fancy more of the urban influence, Resene has a range of faux wall paper designs that could turn your room into an edgy space adorned with bricks, slate tiles, concrete slabs, wood or rustic panels. Marble is also a developing trend that adds a touch of smartness and sophistication. There’s also a global resurgence of love for the original king of wallpaper, British textile designer William Morris, who produced more than 50 wallpapers that adorned the homes of Victorian estates. Many of these still feature in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum’s (V&A) extensive Morris collection, and replicas and reinterpretations of which can now be found to purchase online as wall coverings and prints. There really is no end to the scope of designs out there to help you redecorate your favourite room. Whether you’re looking for something bright and enchanting, moody and dynamic, or fun and creative, there’s a stunning design to modernise and transform your décor in an instant.

Classic colour palettes never date By Susan Sandys Ashburton Guardian

There are some colour palettes that never date. And that will certainly be the case at the new home of Dani Drummond and her partner Rowan O’Connor. Trident Homes completed building their threebedroom plus study home, on Charlesworth Drive, earlier this year. Dani and Rowan went for classic greys, blacks and neutrals, forming the perfect backdrop for furnishings and décor of their choosing. The exterior is a medium-size antique white brick, topped off with a grey friese COLORSTEEL® roof. Inside, the contemporary feel continues, a timber-finish vinyl extends from the front entrance foyer to the kitchen, where a shiny black granite bench top and white oblong tiles with modern fixtures give a classy feel. The home has a dark grey cut pile carpet, enhanced with custom made curtains featuring soft shades and prints. Ranchsliders in the dining and family room are complemented by floor-to-ceiling windows, which are also in the separate lounge, letting in plenty of sunshine and warmth, and providing a view to the outdoors. A ranchslider features in the master bedroom as well, and a large outdoor decking area flowing through to the family room

connect the two areas along the rear of the house. Contemporary fixtures in the ensuite and main bathroom are classic white, offset with the same timber-finish vinyl as the kitchen. Decoration throughout has a Scandinavian feel, featuring natural timbers and white finishes, enlivened with soft greenery in the form of flourishing pot plants.

“It’s just some random things that we like that we have just sort of thrown together, we haven’t really gone for a particular look,” Dani said. And they are finding their new home the perfect size for their growing family, which includes five-month-old Jonty and his kitten Yoda.

Roller blinds Roller blinds today have a much wider range of colours and designs than the roller blinds of old, and they also now have a variety of blinds for different functions. Sunscreen roller blinds make a definite difference in your comfort during the heat of summer by cutting down glare and heat. They protect your carpet, furnishings and artworks without completely blocking your views. Sunscreen fabrics are especially efficient at filtering visible light and UV rays (up to 97 per cent), thus increasing interior comfort and reducing reflections and glare on television or computer screens. Sunscreen blinds are also very useful in winter to block the glare of the low winter sun without blocking the light and warmth out completely, as drawn curtains do. The transparency of sunscreen blinds is affected by the colour that you choose. Contrary to what you may automatically think, the darker the fabric the more you will see through the blind. The lighter the colour, the less. This is due to the sunlight reflecting off the lighter colours and making the holes in the weave seem smaller. Another option is sheer roller blinds. With more transparency than a sunscreen they offer privacy from neighbours or the road without enclosing the room. Our range of sheer fabrics have been

specifically chosen for New Zealand’s harsh UV conditions and are available in a large range of textures and neutral tones. If privacy at night is required, consider pairing the sunscreen or sheer roller with block-out rollers, curtains or a roman blind. All of our blinds are made to measure to fit your windows. This means they are customised according to your specifications regarding which side the control is on, and

whether it is front or back rolled. Depending on which fabric is chosen the roller blinds can be made up to 3m wide. For windows and doors that are wider than that, we can use inline brackets to connect the blinds with one singular control. All rollers are fitted with co-ordinating bottom rail colours and shapes, which also match our large range of curtain tracks, rods and finials.

For high or hard to get to windows, motorised blinds are now an easy and practical option and are now more affordable than ever. So next time you are considering blinds for your home or office, come and see our displays and discuss your ideas with the friendly team at Skip-2-It Flooring Xtra. Advertising feature

Laminate Laminate is quickly becoming a very popular hard flooring alternative and with increasingly superior products available it is easy to see why. The advantages of laminate flooring include its durability, ease to clean and colour stability in high sun areas. The appearance of laminate flooring has become so realistic that it is often mistaken for real wood. It is available in a large range of colours from the lightest timbers to the darkest stains and many variations in between. They also come in a range of sizes and plank widths. To make a great product even more attractive it is now available in the next generation in technology, with our Quick-Step Impressive range we finally have a laminate fully warranted for use in wet areas – bathrooms and laundries. Laminate is also becoming a popular choice in kitchens as it is softer under foot than the likes of ceramic tiles, yet it is still hardwearing. Laminate planks come pre-finished which means no waiting around for layers of polyurethane to dry and no smells! You can walk on them the very same day they are laid. A foam underlay provides cushioning and sound absorption,

then the tongue and groove joints are clicked together to form a “floating” floor over the top. It is important to ensure laminate is installed properly by qualified and experienced installers. Quality laminate flooring will not cup or bow when properly installed and maintained. However as with most flooring, there are varying qualities of laminate and you generally get what you pay for! However, the real advantage of laminate flooring is that it is one of the easiest floors to care for and maintain that you can find. It doesn’t easily stain, is fade resistant, never needs waxing or polishing and it takes a lot of wear. The superior wear surface with which most modern laminate floors are provided means that they resist normal wear and tear with ease. Laminate is much harder to mark than solid wood. So next time you are considering laminate flooring, come and see the friendly team at Skip-2-It Flooring Xtra to see our on the floor displays and discuss our great laminate options. How to deter burglars By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Ashburton Guardian

Locking up your items and identifying them is a key way to protect your home from crime, say the New Zealand Police. Always locking up is the first piece of advice police offer to the public as burglars often enter homes through unlocked doors and windows, or take advantage of weaker locks. That means installing good quality locks through a reputable locksmith, and making sure you have checked them so you know how to escape easily in the event of a fire or other emergency. Even when you are home, police still advise to keep your front door locked if you are in the back garden for example, or are performing a task that requires a lot of concentration such as studying or sewing, or having a rest. Ensuring you are able to identify your items should they be stolen is a key step and ensuring you identify and mark your valuables is key. Keep receipts, warranties, valuations and a list of serial numbers in a safe place. Take photographs or videos of jewellery, artworks and other precious things. Portable items of high value are the most likely things to be stolen. Burglars are unlikely to steal items that are permanently marked because they are hard to

sell. Engrave valuable items with your driver licence number, car registration number or phone number. If you have engraved your valuable property or recorded the serial numbers of items, Neighbourhood Support can provide you with a warning sticker to put on a window. The sticker will discourage most criminals from taking your property because they

know there is a greater risk of getting caught or traced if they handle and attempt to sell identifiable goods. The New Zealand Police also have SNAP (serial number action partnership) which is an initiative that aims to prevent burglary and offending by making it harder for criminals to sell stolen goods. The website allows you to enter and

maintain details of all your important possessions or assets, which creates a list that can be accessed from anywhere at any time. If your items are stolen, you can instantly retrieve your asset list details and forward these on to the police and your insurance company. The website is www.snap.org.nz.

Influencing colour trends By Jo Skilling Colourplus

As we look ahead to a new season, Jo Skilling, design consultant at Colourplus talks all things colour and the highly anticipated, newly released Dulux Colour Forecast 2020 Essence. “The Dulux Colour Forecast is informed by extensive global research” says Jo. “Colour trends are influenced by what is happening around us. There is an increased focus on mental health and wellness, the desire to step away from our screens, and a growing environmental consciousness.” In response to this, design trends for 2020 will reflect our desire to pause and reconnect with the essence of what matters most to us. Recycled materials, nature-inspired palettes, and furniture that blends old and new. The Dulux Colour Forecast 2020 consists of four unique palettes: Comeback, Grounded, Cultivate and Indulge, plus a small curated palette of four bold fashionable hues. Colours are more restrained than in previous years. Brights are pulled back and influenced by nature. They appear in smaller doses – think feature walls and details. Neutrals are soft and sophisticated, with a gently faded feel that speak of stillness and calm, as we increasingly look to our home as somewhere to recharge our energy. Comeback is a fresh and invigorating palette consisting of oceanic and mineral shades of

blue-green, azure and amber, highlighted with warm tones of burgundy, rust and clay. Our idea of luxury has also evolved, designers are creating more quality products using recycled and re-purposed materials, often in natural products. The Grounded palette is a medley of soft, liveable neutrals, running from pale biscuit and caramel through to muddy lavender. Colours which could be used as the main shade throughout a home. We’re increasingly aware of the positive effects of nature on our mental and physical health.

The Cultivate palette is a serene layering of greens – from soft olive and a pistachio to verdant forest green – with accents of plum, curd and chalky blue adding an unexpected edge. Beautiful when paired with raw, mid-tone timbers, natural stone and transparent, coloured glass. The Indulge palette is decadent and luxurious, featuring rich burgundy, eggplant, earthy brown, faded terracotta and soft coral. Not for the faint hearted, this palette is dramatic and exciting and is guaranteed to add wow factor to a master bedroom, dining room or living room.

Pink, a key colour of the last few years, makes an appearance, but in a more neutral tone that’s closer to tan, alongside a warm, dusty rose. Add a touch of one of the four fashionable brights – ‘70s-inspired fuchsia, primary blue, orange-red or acid yellow – as a little touch of the unexpected to give your home personality! As trends change and evolve, remember that paint is fast, fun, and affordable. You can easily switch things up if you want to try something new!
