TRENDS
trends FOR 2018
Twitter went wild with speculation when first lady Melania Trump showed up for her husband’s first State of the Union address in an ivory Christian Dior pantsuit. Some suggested sarcastically her attire was a tribute to Hillary Clinton, her husband’s 2016 Democratic opponent, who favours pantsuits. Or, was she honouring the suffragettes, who made white their signature
colour? Others tweeted that Mrs Trump looked “divine”. Whatever the reason for her choice, the suit was definitely in contrast to the black worn by Democratic congresswomen and their allies. Some colours are timeless, others have their moment in the spotlight then fade away. What then to make of Pantone’s colour of 2018, ultra violet? >

Dramatic purples have long been the symbol of counter-culture, unconventionality and artistic brilliance. Think music icons Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix. If you’re a red-head, then purple in its varying hues, will have always been on your radar. In home décor, ultra violet can transform a room, add spice and brightness. It can make a statement of elegance, or unexpected boldness. Tonal reds – including terracotta, burnished red, tangerine and coral – are also back. Last seen in the 1980s, these colours can be added with a softer touch in decorative pillows or a textured throw. Mid Canterbury expert Chris Redmond, from Redmonds Furnishings, says you don’t have to be a slave to trends though. “My advice is always take and use the bits you like and don’t be a follower.” He says avoid being influenced by what friends think look best and be happy with what you choose. The undoubted furniture trend for 2018 though is soft, sophisticated luxury. “The colours and texture we are seeing in furniture is a lot of velvet in teal/blue, chartreuse, dark green and musky pink.” When he says dark green, it is a long way from the forest green from the 1980s. This is a lush and rich green. Leather, once dominant, has dropped back to sit alongside other textiles in the fabric of choice and Redmond says colour and pattern is being used as a feature. “Texture and colour with a Moroccan-comeMediterranean influence is being seen in upholstery and accessories like cushions, throws and ottomans.

“Natural linens and neutral textures are still predominant covers for lounge furniture though.” The trend is also prevalent in decorative tiles and paint is moving away from black and white to strong deep tones in blues and grey. Wallpaper is still predominant but Redmond is urging his clients to break out and wallpaper the whole room rather than just a feature wall. If you’re searching the internet for home decorating clues, you’ll read less about hygge (the Danish concept of creating “a feeling” for your home) and more about wabi-sabi, the ancient Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection. Yeah, nah, says Redmond. It’s all about what works for you, and if you’re not sure, talk to a furnishing consultant, they’ve seen and heard it all before. The curved furniture showcased at the 2017 Milan Furniture Fair is also now in showrooms, featuring comfortable couches, low-lying, puffy, curved and even plump. And as Redmond has pointed out, velvet is again on the rise as the fabric of covering. The distinctive soft pile fabric has been woven since at least the Middle Ages, the cut ends of the pile forming tufts on the surface. They are set so closely together that they form a very plush surface that has a characteristic feel. The fabric works well with other textural fabrics and has loads of uses in the manufacture of home furnishings and upholstery. It’s durable and can be cleaned by brushing off any dust with a soft bristled hair brush. >

On the flooring front, variations on grey still dominate carpet choices. Less popular, says Skip-2-It’s Carmen Rooney, are the charcoals that tend to show more dust and dirt and need more vacuuming. If you’re not buying carpet this year, at least shout your existing floor coverings a commercial clean, it will prolong their life. Rooney recommends this treatment about every 18 months.
Window dressings for 2018 look to continue the popular light and fluffy look, with softer fabrics. Curtains are a big investment and they have to sit alongside your lounge suite and dining room table, so make sure you get good advice. Skip-2-It’s Anna Woolley says a really popular addition to the window treatment range are roller blinds which look great, and can act as sun shades or another layer of insulation in cooler temperatures. Roller blinds can take the place of net curtains and are a stylish way to retain your privacy, while shielding the sun at different levels. Anna says curtains are either open or closed, but roller blinds can be adjusted to suit. The blinds fit inside the frames and act as another layer of insulation, which can make a huge difference if you don’t have doublegazing. Blinds also come in a range of colours and Anna advises taking home some sample pieces to hang before deciding if you want a light or dark tint, as the level of transparency is important. Blinds can be adjusted manually or with a remote control. She recommends batterypowered remotes, over hard-wired control, just in case the power goes out and you’re stuck with them down or up.

The range covers wide windows and can be installed with a minimum of fuss. Some other home décor trends never go out of vogue, like indoor plants. If you were a fan of the rubber plant, then rejoice, they’ll still look great in a bedroom as well as being on trend for 2018. Plants are great in nearly all rooms of the house, just make sure you pick the right one. Chic and elegant cacti or succulents do well in the low sunlight and low humidity of living rooms and ferns love bathrooms (go beyond the maidenhead that was in your nana’s powder room).

Kitchens also lend themselves to plants, if you have light, and it makes sense to plant herbs that you can eat too. Other lively specimens are spider plants or interesting aloe veras – and you can’t overlook the veteran performer that is the peace lily. You don’t have to change your whole house to be on trend though. Accessorise or decorate a smaller area, like a splashback, appliances, or the bathroom, or update curtains and blinds. Don’t be afraid of using pops of colour in the bathrooms, particularly shades of dark green, teal, sapphire blue, plum and charcoal. There’s always the wonderful worldwide web to inspire you!

IDEAS
Kokedama
If you want the look of a zen garden, but don’t have the time to create such a masterpiece, the Kokedama is for you. The idea has taken off in recent months, with real and fake options appearing as hanging colour, but it’s actually a traditional craft that’s been popular in Japanese gardens for years. Literally translating to “moss ball”, it involves the roots of a plant being specially wrapped with soil and peat, or sphagnum moss, and then held together with wire or nylon, to create a snug little bundle that can be suspended in the air with twine. If you’re feeling creative, jump online

to source the best kind of plant for your space, as they do have a tendency to dry out quickly, then you’ll find easy DIY guides in an instant. Ferns and orchids are popular, or experiment with succulents and cacti for a completely different look. Always remember to be careful when handling potting mix, and follow the instructions printed on the bag. If you’d rather the work was done for you, head to a speciality garden shop where they’re bound to have some already made up for you to take home. Then, all you need to do is sit back and enjoy your peaceful new surrounds.

Clever Clogs The world of the internet, and in particular sites like Pinterest, has opened up a never-ending supply of clever ideas for you to try at home. Nowadays, clever clogs can jump online and share their wacky creations and ingenious lifehacks, and those seeking some inspiration, can be guided along the way step-by-step. These ideas come in the form of crates being turned into table tops, crafty storage ideas, planter boxes, and

Our favourites are people using sets of drawers as outdoor pots, edible gardens using recycled materials, DIY potting benches, pallet sofas, and an incredible array of ideas for drink coolers. If your property is in need of a little sprucing up, don’t be afraid to hit the web for some cool ideas that will be so unique, you won’t find a replica in any shop.

ADVICE
Tips for building Building ideas Look at friends’ homes, show homes, home shows, magazines, television lifestyle programmes, social media channels including Instagram and Pinterest, and any other place you can think of. Get a feeling for what is available and the approximate prices. A great place to start is the Registered Master Builders House of the Year website where you will see the best new homes and renovations across all budgets and categories. A lot of people start a scrapbook or Pinterest board of the things they might like to include in their home or building project.
Finances and Budgeting Be very clear about the budget of your project, as this affects every step. There are many options for financing new builds. Talk to your bank or mortgage broker as they can give you a good idea early on as to what you can afford.
engineers to your project. It’s very important to know the difference between a quote and an estimate. An estimate is only an approximation of what the estimator thinks the job will cost. A quote is an explicit promise of what a job will cost – always get a quote in writing. We also recommend you get three comparable quotes.
Shop around as interest rates can vary greatly. Be sure to read the fine print and get legal advice before signing any finance deals. Once you know your budget, ensure you prioritise your wants and needs. Needs should always come first. Wants can be leveraged into your building project where the budget will allow. Your builder and architect should be able to provide you with some good rule of thumb advice to help formulate your requirements and let you know if you need to add

Getting a LIM A Land Information Memorandum (LIM) provides information held by the council about a particular
property, which you may not get off the district plan alone. You can apply for a LIM at any time, but it is essential when you are thinking of buying a section. The information you may get from a LIM will vary between councils. Generally you could expect to find out about: • Rates • Land features and environmental issues, such as erosion or flooding • Restrictions on land or building use
END OF SEASON
• Resource consents issued • Potential contamination by hazardous substances • Details about septic tanks and hazardous substances, etc • Storm water or sewage drains • There may be information about wahi tapu sites (sacred areas) and some councils may provide aerial photographs, building plans and drawings. The LIM information might help you make the decision about whether to buy the section and whether the price is fair. For instance, if you have to do major earthworks to fix the drainage you might reconsider the price of the section. You should make getting a satisfactory LIM, and your lawyer’s approval of the LIM contents, a condition of your sale and purchase agreement, allowing yourself enough time to obtain and study it.

Laminate LAMINATE LAMINATE Laminate is quickly becoming a popular hard flooring alternative and with increasingly superior products available it is easy to see why. The advantages of laminate flooring include its durability, ease to clean and colour stability in high sun areas. The appearance of laminate flooring has become so realistic that it is often mistaken for real wood. It is available in a large range of colours from the lightest timbers to the darkest stains and many variations in between. They also come in a range of sizes and plank widths. To make a great product even more attractive it is now available in the next generation in technology. With our Quickstep Impressive range we finally have a laminate fully warranted for use in wet areas – bathrooms and laundries. Laminate is also becoming a popular choice in kitchens as it is softer under foot than the likes of ceramic tiles, yet it is still hardwearing.

Choosing a kitchen sink There is a lot to consider when choosing the perfect sink for your kitchen. Not only does it need to be practical and user friendly, but it also needs to tie in with the style of your kitchen – and can actually be a great asset to the overall look you are going for. Do you prefer a single bowl or double bowl? Stainless steel or the newly developed eco-granite? Can a baking tray fit in your sink? Does it matter? Maybe not – but it is good to think about these things so that your sink fits in with your lifestyle, rather than you just adapting to what you have. Break away from what’s considered the norm, and look at all the new, fantastic products available to you today – you might be surprised with what you discover. If you’re putting in a new kitchen, you’ll need to also install a new sink. Firstly you need to cut a hole in the bench top using the template provided. When cutting into Formica bench tops, ensure you use masking tape and a sharp
jigsaw blade. When installing the sink, ensure you use the foam seal and silicone sealant then clamp into place whilst the silicone sealant dries. If you’re replacing your existing sink, measure your existing sink precisely as your new sink will need
to be the same size or larger. Make sure you use thread tape on the tap to ensure the seal is tight and there are no leaks. For more inspiration for your next project check out www.mitre10.co.nz/dreamzone

A backyard full of beautiful blooms and contrasting colours can transform any landscaping project from boring to bold, so what can you do to set your garden apart from every other plot of dirt on the street?
Fragrant flowers It’s a natural reaction to smell a flower, but unfortunately, not every bloom is blessed with a blissful scent. A fragrant garden is going from nice-to-have to must-have. Plants that offer pleasantscented leaves and blooms are skyrocketing in popularity. No fragrant garden should be without heavenly honeysuckle, climbing a fence or trained over an arbor. They require little attention, other than pruning to keep them within bounds after flowering. Daphnes are renowned for their beautiful scent, which often carries for several metres. Evergreen and deciduous, they vary from low-growing to medium-sized shrubs and appreciate a good dose of manure in well-drained soil.
Variegated beauties While beautiful blooms come and go,
variegated foliage lasts all season long and can be just as much of a glorious show-stopper. Even the most avid gardener has places in his or her yard that don’t allow for blooming buds, and even the most manicured of spaces just won’t have blooms all of the time. A variegated plant like a hosta can provide a focal point in a sea of all green plants. It has a dreamy creamy colored outline all around its edges. Your eye cannot fail to see its striking contrasts as you wander through the garden.
Old-fashioned flowers We often look back and take comfort in the nostalgic. That’s why plants such as hydrangeas, lavender, Russian sage, moonflower, impatiens, and celosia are blooming in popularity. For a charming English country cottage feel, dedicate a part of your garden to yesteryear and take a trip down memory lane every time you step outside. The flowers lend themselves to being arranged informally in the garden and many will self-seed leading to those overflowing and generous quantities of blooms we associate with the traditional cottage garden style.

IDEAS
Moody Tones With just a few simple touches, a blank white space can be transformed into a room full of atmosphere and style. An easy way of achieving this, without breaking the budget, is by looking for just the right details, and it’s all about the accessories. Items in copper, bronze, black and rose gold, set alongside smoky colours, instantly smarten up a room by adding a modern, stylish flavour, with an industrial edge.
You’ll find a plethora of these in geometric designs in almost every shop you walk into at the moment, often in the form of table stands, trinket trays, lamps, and stressed gold-edged mirrors and frames. To upgrade to a high-end look, include something with marble features (there’s plenty of look-a-like options) to instantly add a sense of glamour. You’ll be amazed how these touches can add warmth and atmosphere to a cosy room in no time at all.
We love our homes, you will too. Stonewood Homes now in the Mid Canterbury area. 326 East Street, Ashburton | 03 928 8027 stonewood.co.nz 18 | HOUSE TO HOME

Building a house can be stressful. There’s the pressure of staying within budget, and so many decisions to be made. Methven grandmother Ferne Baker knew this only too well when she decided to build a spec house on her section at Camrose Avenue. She was no stranger to building, having just one year earlier, in 2016, organised the building of her own home on the section behind it. “It’s not for the faint-hearted,” she said of the spec house building process which she immersed herself in last year. But with a fantastic team behind her, the process went just like clockwork. “I loved it. I just enjoyed being able to turn a vision into a reality,” Baker said. “The build was incredible, it was built within the time frame and within my budget.” She said it was thanks to the hard work of professionals such as Ashburton builder Ross Leadley, and Ashburton architectural designer John Gibbs who put her ideas and concepts into a working plan. “Everything was designed before the foundations went down,” Baker said. This included the landscaping, and she will be passing on a landscaping plan to the new owners which they will be able to use if they so desire.

TOGETHER, WE’RE BUILDING NEW ZEALAND
Baker said that once the building process was under way, all the sub-trades worked in perfectly, and Placemakers had all the materials on site and product delivered on time. The result is a classy and contemporary three-bedroom home, that Baker just adores and has now put on the market. The home has north-facing living areas, designed to capture the sun and beautiful views of Mt Hutt. The exterior brick is a dark grey, complemented by a sand-grey coloured linear cladding and five-ribbed roofing iron. The sophisticated palette flows through to inside, with neutral tones throughout. A
marled grey carpet, light walls, mottled grey kitchen bench top, white kitchen joinery, stainless steel stove and dishwasher and white splash-back. The front door enters into a hall which is also entered nearby from the spacious double garage with laundry. The kitchen family room and lounge area is open-spaced, opening onto an al fresco dining area which is part of a larger back yard. All three bedrooms are double-bedroom size and the master bedroom has a spacious en-suite and walk-in wardrobe. “I built it as though I would like to live in it,” Baker said.

IDEAS
Hammocks If you’ve spent your summer lounging in a deck chair, it might be time to consider upgrading to a stylish hammock in time for next year’s holiday. Whether you prefer an upright single seater, or a luxurious lounger, there’s an option for every taste and budget. Once you’ve decided if you’re after a traditional macramé design, or a modern cane or wood structure, you
can turn your attention to making it all your own. Tuck it away on your deck - or string between two trees for shelter – and embellish with twinkle lights for atmosphere, and funky outdoor cushions. All you need now are sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and a really good book!

Bring the tropics indoors If a tropical island or Hawaiian retreat is out of your price range right now, why not bring the tropics to you? With summer in mind, we’ve starting seeing an explosion of vibrant, bold colours that’s bound to get you in the holiday mood. To create a cool bedroom theme, you can pick up a reasonably-priced new duvet cover set that pops with colour to use as your base. From the simple, to the more elaborate, you’ll spot ferns, flowers and foliage in a range of styles to suit your taste. Then, the world’s your oyster. Bring the sunshine inside with
artificial palms, birds of paradise, and rubber tree plant, with its luscious, thick, glossy leaves, and individual hibiscus flowers. You can even go quirky by adding vibrant pink flamingos and juicy golden pineapples, which appear in everything from picture frames to ornaments, to adorn your space. By adding the final flourishes of coconut scented candles, some LED twinkle lights, and as many bright flowers as you can manage, you’ll feel rested up in no time. After all, don’t they say change is as good as a holiday?

Geometric
You can’t go past geometric symmetry if you’re looking to add a modern twist to your property. These clean and simple lines are bang on trend, and because there’s so many options out there, it’s your choice whether you splurge on quality, or go cheap and cheerful. In fact, there’s almost so many ideas, it can be tricky to decide on one look, but keep an eye out to find something that suits your style. If you’re super brave, you could
go with black and white geometric wallpaper, an art sculpture, or furniture with a retro flavour. But, if you’re just looking to add a few smart touches on a budget, look out for the awesome honeycomb shelving ideas, clocks and ornaments, rugs, and super cool lampshades. Keep it simple though, you don’t want to overdo the look. All you need is a few statement pieces, set against a plain backdrop, and you’ll change a space instantly – with class.

Shades of Green It doesn’t matter where you look at the moment – from upmarket stores to affordable warehouses – indoor greenery is most definitely “in”. Whether you prefer the harsh lines and points of a cacti, plump succulents, or elegant ferns, the options are pretty much endless. And, what to plant them in, well, that could almost fill an entirely separate article. Considering their natural desert surrounds, cacti are perfectly suited for your dry, sunny windowsill, and are completely low maintenance. Just water every now and then, and watch out for those spikes – they can be nasty. Planted on their own, or as mass mini-deserts in lovely, low terracotta pots, they will look spectacular all-year round, and may even surprise you with an annual flower to add a burst of colour. For those who can’t deal with the prickles, but love the look, you can also find DIY cardboard cut-outs online so you can still share in the fun! Succulents have come a long way from their beach and garden border
Let the team at Insideout take care of all your painting and property maintenance
past, and nowadays people are coming up with new and innovative ways of displaying these bright little beauties. Planting a few in a glass terrarium, or pot, couldn’t be easier, but if you’re after something far more adventurous, jump online where you’ll find succulent balls, wall features, rock gardens, and more. But, to add real luxury to a room, while still holding onto that comfortable feeling, you can’t go past luscious ferns. Low-maintenance, and available in endless varieties, a fern can add texture and vibrancy to a lounge, bathroom, bedroom or office in an instant. Plus, taking cuttings is a cinch, so you can swap and share with friends and family to enjoy their foliage in a variety of designs. When you’re looking for something to plant your new creation in, have fun scouting through the incredible range of ideas out there. From cool concrete pots and bowls, to macramé hanging baskets, metallic geometric designs and air plants suspended in delicate mid-air glass vessels, one thing is certain; you will never be bored, or run out of ideas!

Pergolas Pergolas are a great addition to a garden of any size. They provide a shaded area for walking or sitting underneath. With corner vertical posts or pillars with cross beams over the top they most commonly have woody vines growing up, around and through them to make them blend into the garden. As with most things garden based you don’t have to have an extensive space to be able to consider a feature element.
Create the illusion of a large garden by incorporating mirrors to give the perception of extra space, or add solar lights to make the area come alive at night. There are plenty of affordable pizza ovens and fire pits so you can dine outside and keep warm as the autumn nights approach. So get creative and design your own pergola to add the wow factor to your garden.

We found Cawton Grove is a very nice area to live in. It is close to town but far enough away to make it feel rural. It was also a good price for the size of the section. Cawton Grove met our needs and we are happy to have bought and built there. ~ Matt Winter
