A centenary of sorts will be celebrated at the Mayfield A&P Show on March 9 even though the 100th show is still six years away. The first show was staged in 1919, but no events were held in 1925 or 1948 because of polio outbreaks or during World War Two. President David Whillans said the 94th annual show would still be a momentous event as it was 100 years since the first show was held. “It’s been 100 years since the first show was on and it was really through the war years and a few other years that they didn’t hold one. The committee does want the 100th show to be a big do but this one is lining up to be another good event and there is a lot of work going on to make it a successful event.’’
He said show events and activities continued to evolve each year to keep it a fun-filled day for families. Close-knit community members were great supporters of the show, he said. The feature attraction will be the tractor pull to be held over two days – on Friday and show day – with up to 50 different tractors entered in various sections. Whillans said the 10-day weather forecast for calm and settled conditions would be better than last year when the first day of the tractor pull was called off on Friday and had to be run on one day on show day. He said many farmers were on top of
harvesting and it would be a good time of the year for them to have a break and a good day out. Another crowd-puller will be the pig racing event which has been a long standing feature of the show. The children magnet will again be the pet tent which has doubled in size from last year to now fill two marquees. Stiff competition though is likely to come from the scavenger hunt across the showgrounds, the ear-tag-in-the-haystack contest and there will be story tellers cooking damper around a camp fire. In addition, there will be entertainment activities such as the bouncy castles and a water park. One of the new additions this year will be the tug-of-war against a clydesdale team. Other attractions include art and craft stalls, food stalls, live entertainment, trade displays, vintage machinery, including three traction engines. Then there are the competitions including shearing, a large horse section, and judging for goats, sheep and produce.

PROGRAMME
Whillans said the show committee had put a lot of thought and work into this year’s show to make it a success and a lot of input from the whole community went into the day. He said local schools and the playcentre as well as local clubs and groups assisted with running the event and many businesses supported the show through sponsorships and displays. Whillans and his wife Rebecca run their 250 hectare mixed cropping farm at Ruapuna with the assistance of farm manager Colum O’Reilly. They are heavily involved with the community with their three children George, 8, Angus, 6, attending Mayfield School and Charlotte, 3, next in line. Whillans is a strong promoter of the local community. He works off the farm as Westpac’s agribusiness area manager for Mid,
Central and North Canterbury and gets to see many rural people and a lot of the Canterbury region each week. “What we have got in the Mayfield community is very special. It’s a close knit community that looks out and assists each other when required. The Mayfield Show is a great example of that when the whole community gets together each year to put on a really great family event”. “The Mayfield Domain and A&P Show Grounds have benefited from that community input with new entrance gates constructed this year by the Lions club and a new mower donated which keeps the place looking in top shape.” David is the third generation of the Whillans family to have been on the show committee, along with his father Ian and grandfather David. The trio have during their service all acted as convenors of the sheep section.
