The Methven A&P Show promises to be a fun-filled event Hours of volunteer work are coming together as preparations make way for the big day at the Methven A&P Show this weekend. The 105th annual show promises to be a good one for visitors making the most of the fun-filled day. Among the many attractions are the arts and craft and wine and food entries, animals, sideshows, farm machinery and much more. As well as other show favourites such as shearing, wood chopping, tug of war and top team competitions, there is also some quality live entertainment from Sport Suzie performing near the wine and food area. Judges will be running an astute eye to find the best animal in the sheep, wool, dairy goat, poultry, farm produce and many other sections. The show jumping and horse section is always hotly contested by entrants both young and old. Equally sought after is the acknowledgment of being among the top placegetters in the shearing, wood chopping and dog trials. Childrens’ pets and dancing are among other attractions which always draw in a good crowd. The hard work of volunteers and the
organising committee always extends beyond the lead-up to the main event. Last year the Methven A&P Association upgraded the site’s facilities with help from the Methven Vintage Club, Methven Rodeo and the Methven Pony Club. Underground power cables were installed at the showgrounds and new power boxes were supplied to the trade area. This unseen work goes a long way to making the show an enjoyable day. As always, this work is completed with a lot of support from local companies. The association milled several 50-60-year-old oregon trees from the showgrounds to pay for the project. This was not at the expense of the showgrounds as the large trees had been hampering the growth of younger trees by keeping them in the shade. A new irrigation system was also installed to water the main and northern show rings. Over the last year more improvements have been made, but on a smaller scale. A new loading bank has gone in for trucks and tractors and four new hunting jumps have been added to the showjumping arena. Ferris wheel rides are always a popular attraction at the Methven A&P Show. On top of this, buildings and other strucPHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN tures have received a new lick of paint.

Suzie’s show full of crazy stunts In a retro red outfit reminiscent of Eastern European athletes of the 1980s Sport Suzie will easily be the standout performer at the Methven A&P Show. Sport Suzie, also known as Louise Kerr, will be doing two shows at midday and 2.30pm in the wine and food area on show day. Her hilarious and silly show is a not-to-be-missed workout session for the family. Suzie’s show is full of crazy stunts, from yoyos flying in the air, funny magic, super unicycling, crazy juggling, hilarious audience participation and an extremely small bike. She has been entertaining audiences all over the world with her hilarious and wacky show. A juggling routine involves her squeezing her body through a tennis racket at the same time and to top it off she will perform a cardio workout by skipping on a six foot unicycle. The performer has been entertaining audiences with her unique style of humour since graduating from New Zealand’s only circus school Circo Arts in 2007. At the school Kerr specialised in comedy, character/ clowning, unicycling, juggling and physical theatre.
Her career has taken her throughout New Zealand and in Australia, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Singapore, Scotland and the United Kingdom. Kerr’s accomplishments included performing in other A&P shows as well as the Christchurch World Buskers Festival, Auckland International Buskers Festival, Homegrown Festival in Wellington and Hokitika Wildfoods Festival. Further afield she has been on stage at international events including the Gyeryong Military Culture Festival in Korea, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Berlin Lacht Festival in Germany and the Pflasterspektakel Festival Linz in Austria. Working regularly for Clown Doctors New Zealand in Christchurch hospitals, she also performs at corporate and community events. She has trained with local and international theatre, comedy and circus tutors, such as Fraser Hooper, Giovanni Fusetti, and Cirque Du Soleil performer Ira Seidenstein. Kerralso holds a bachelor’s degree in teaching and learning and is covered by public liability insurance.
