GT500 looks very angry T he likes of Hennessey, Roush, and RTR have been laying waste to the Ford Mustang aftermarket scene with a raft of hot 700hp+ machines, ready to chug fuel, burn rubber, and vacate your local Cars & Coffee event in a ... serene and slow-moving manner. But all the while, Ford has no doubt been watching on in the knowledge that their next-gen bruiser – the GT500 – is probably expected to out gun these cars on the spec sheet and on the race track. We’re still a ways from knowing exactly how powerful the GT500 will be. Ford have only said that it would have more than 700hp/521kW from a supercharged V8, although some have rumoured it will be closer to 770hp/540kW – enough to make it the most powerful Ford ever made. But at the very least, we’re now quite a lot closer to knowing what it looks like. To date, Ford have only released a few light teasers showcasing some of the GT500s angrier features; namely that aggressive front end. The GT500 sports the 2017-spec S-550 headlights on either side of its much larger central grill set-up. An aggressive splitter set-up channels air around the front wheels, while LEDs top a pair of new ducts on the flanks of the front bumper. It’s been speculated that it will make its formal debut at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show in January.

The need for speed W

hen it was launched in 1994, the Triumph Speed Triple opened up a whole new segment to the motorcycling market, that of the factory street fighter – a bike with a superbike-sized heart, but the riding ergonomics and lack of fairing of a standard motorcycle. Fast forward to 2018, and the Speed Triple hasn’t lost any of its street-fighting attitude with the latest incarnation finally making its way to the New Zealand market. It is now offered in two distinct flavours based on those seen on the Street Triple 765. Although displacement of the DOHC triple-cylinder engine remains the same at 1050cc, much has changed for the incoming Speed Triple. The engine has 105 new parts to ensure that although it doesn’t have as many cubic centimetres as some of its contemporaries, the Speed Triple can still hang with the best and show them a thing or two. Some updates the boffins at the Triumph factory in Hinkley gave the engine include a new, lighter crank gear, lighter Nikasil-plated aluminium cylinder liners, a smaller starter motor, plus lighter battery and alternator. As you can see, dropping weight was a consideration, and the new Speed Triple tips the scales 3kg lighter than the outgoing bike – with a dry weight of 189kg.

Thanks to a bit of engine massaging in the factory, the Trumpet’s power output now sits at 7 per cent higher than the previous generation Speed Triple, punching out a healthy 110kW, achieved at 10,500rpm, and backed by 117Nm of torque – up 4 per cent from last year – from 7150rpm. A significant change for the 2019 version of the bike is the inclusion of a 5-inch TFT dash unit over the combination analogue tachometer/ LCD speedo that has adorned the Speed Triple for well over a decade, offering plenty of functionality to match its stylish looks. Linked in with the TFT is a ride-by-wire throttle, which is fast becoming standard fare for the industry and in turn allows for up to five rider modes – the fifth being an RS exclusive Track mode. In the all-important braking department, the Speed Triple receives large 320mm twin front brake discs with Brembo 4-piston 2-pad M4.34 radial Monobloc calipers up front, which provide fantastic slow to the rest of the bike’s go. The name of this bike says it all. It is a triple cylinder machine that is devastatingly quick, begging you to twist the throttle and unleash its full potential. If it was a person, it would be a young Tom Cruise, constantly uttering the words “I have a need, a need, for speed!”

Hybrids a win-win

B

eing plugged into EA Networks EV fast-charger in West St, or waiting to do so can be an interesting experience. Best of course when you can drive up and don’t have to wait for someone else to complete their (free) re-charge of up to 80 per cent of battery capacity. At times, when there’s others already waiting, I’ve returned later. Talking to those waiting, I found they carefully plot their recharge stops and mostly don’t mind the down-time for doing this when travelling out of town. I observed the fast food outlet, service station etc across the street don’t mind them having to do that either! But for others keen on reducing C02 emissions, but who find the necessity of having to recharge en-route somewhat frustrating, (especially so at this time of the year when a queue is likely) will very likely appreciate the benefits of driving one of Toyota’s self-charging, petrol-electric hybrids. These include the smaller Yaris-based Prius C (from $27,990), the new Corolla Hybrids ($32,990 and $38,490) either of the three Camrys (from $41,490), and the still radical looking Prius range from $39,990 up to 48,490 for the Prime plug-in model. But what about a hybrid SUV? Well never fear, in keeping with Toyota’s commitment to lower their overall CO2 emissions, there’s a self charging hybrid amongst the new RAV range. Toyota say it will be “a win-win for

Roger Hart ROAD TEST

drivers as they experience the benefit of a lifestyle SUV with great visibility, spacious cabin room and off-road ability while having exceptional energy efficiency.“ Most of the RAV’s, including the Hybrids have a new more fuel efficient, 2.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine. Like the latest Camry Hybrid, the RAV uses a special CVT working in concert with its hybrid power-train. But for the RAV, this system will tow exactly the same loads as the petrol models. No pricing has yet been announced, but there will be an entry level model with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and CVT. A special-edition, all-wheel-drive Adventure grade, complete with a more rugged exterior appearance headlines the range, with various models in between. The 2.5-litre petrol models get new 8-speed autos. Toyota say all have a bolder, tougher look about them. Matching this, the new AWD system sends up to 50 per cent of the torque to the rear axle, and varying amounts to the individual wheels.

They also say the interior is more sophisticated with more back seat space, thanks to the longer wheelbase of the new TNGA platform with its multi-link rear suspension, lower centre of gravity, and wider front and rear tracks. All of which is said to provide improved handling, road holding, ride comfort and reduced cabin noise. All get Toyota’s comprehensive Safety Sense package, including a pre-crash system with autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian detection, all speed dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist and automatic high beam. I look forward to experiencing this new RAV but meantime a few words about driving the new, ZR Corolla Hybrid. It now shares the latest hybrid powertrain with the non plug-in Prius SX and ZR, so has a smaller, lighter 1.8-litre Atkinson cycle petrol/hybrid system and a nickel metal hydride battery (battery warranty is 8 years or 160,000km). The result is a combined output of 90 kW, a stated combined fuel consumption of 4.2L/100kms and CO2 emissions of 97g/ km. It now uses 91, rather than the 95 octane petrol. There’s selectable driving modes, but except for driving in city rush hour traffic when Eco mode selection achieves its frugal best the hybrid system left to itself, does an excellent job. That’s on minor hill work as well, but

there is the Power button to further hasten progress. Using this is likely increases consumption to the mid fives as you appreciate the shapely front seats together with the ride and road holding provided by the new platform and suspension. It’s a smart looker and nicely plush inside, with an impressive line-up of standard equipment. This includes dual-zone climate air, key-less smart entry/ push button start, wireless phone charging, colour head-up display, heated leather/suede sports front seats, a premium audio system, bi-LED headlights, 18-inch alloys and more. And not forgetting the impressive array of active driver assistance and passive protection features of the Safety Sense package.

FINALE Electrification is a buzzword both politically and within the motor industry. However for rural folk, and those wanting to do long trips without either range anxiety or the necessity of frequent stops for battery recharging, one of these reasonably priced, selfcharging Hybrids with their balance between fuel economy, low emissions and performance makes a lot of sense!

BEST OF BRITISH

B

entley has enjoyed a year of international recognition for the new Continental GT – the world’s pinnacle Grand Tourer – picking up an impressive number of accolades. Designed, engineered and handcrafted in Great Britain, the Continental GT received 19 awards from a wide range of publications in countries including China, Germany, Russia and its home market of the UK. Commenting on the year of success, Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and Chief Executive, Bentley Motors, said: “Elegant understatement that forces you to look; engineering excellence you’ll take for granted – the extraordinary breadth of

T

capabilities offered by the new Continental GT is unique and can only be offered by our noble British brand.” “The experts around the world have spoken, and they all agree we’ve created the finest Grand Tourer and I’m delighted that the car has received such a high level of recognition.” “With the new Continental GT Convertible joining this highly acclaimed range next year, this only adds to the strongest and most technologically advanced portfolio of products the world has ever seen in one luxury brand.” Since its public unveiling just over a year ago, the third generation Continental GT has become a statement of Grand Touring excellence, combining supercar perfor-

mance with limousine-like refinement and luxury. World-leading style experts, GQ magazine, picked the ultimate grand tourer for its ‘Best Interior (And Possibly Exterior)’ award. It wrote: “Bentley’s challenge was to locate the sweet spot where hi-tech intersects with fabulous luxury. Challenge met.” It added that “Bentley has created a stunning environment… Best interior? Yes, and the rest.” In naming it ‘GT of the Year’, BBC’s Top Gear magazine praised the Continental GT’s depth of engineering, with the publication describing it as “simply one of the most complete GT cars on the planet”. Particular praise was given to the car’s composure on road, making it “easier than

ever to thread through the tricky bits”. In the inaugural News UK Motor Awards, including the Times and Sun titles, the Continental GT was named ‘Luxury Car of the Year’. The judges noted that “the cabin feels as sumptuously appointed as the Princess Grace Suite at the Hotel de Paris MonteCarlo” and that “unlike many sports cars, you’ll arrive feeling as relaxed as when the journey started”. The Continental GT was also named ‘Best Interior’ and ‘Best Exterior Premium Brand’ in the prestigious German Design Awards, ‘Grand Tourer of the Year’ by Sohu Auto in China, and ‘Best Grand Tourer for travelling in Europe’ by Russian title, Prime Traveller.

The safety king

R

aw data rather than judge’s opinion selected the new Toyota Corolla as the safest new vehicle on New Zealand roads. Unlike the other categories in the inaugural AA Driven New Zealand Car of the Year Awards, judges have no bearing on the safety award. Instead, the winner is found by data analysis from every new car independently tested by The Australian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP). In 2018, New Zealand’s Safest Car also happens to be the best-selling passenger vehicle on the market. “The Safest Car Award isn’t judged, it’s

calculated with data from the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme, and I’d like to congratulate Toyota for this important recognition,” said AA motoring service general manager, Stella Stocks. The testing saw 154 vehicles destroyed between 2017-2018. The models chosen for testing represent 95 per cent of new vehicles sold. The Corolla scored highly in all four key areas of testing, with scores of a 96 per cent for adult occupant protection, 83 per cent for child occupant protection, 86 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and 76 per cent for safety assist.

Premium performance J

aguar’s 2019 F-PACE SUV range will have a new high performance SVR model capable of reaching 0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds. The British car maker will introduce the dynamic new 5.0 litre V8 F-PACE SVR for this market – priced from $157,900. Jaguar NZ general manager Steve Kenchington says the F-PACE SVR will be a welcome addition for those familiar with the range. He says the F-PACE has been a strong performer since it launched here in 2017 with hundreds of the premium SUVs sold nationwide and is expecting the new SVR model to perform just as well. “The F-PACE SVR is an exciting new model and will be the fastest and most powerful F-PACE yet, with an enhanced chassis and aerodynamics for maximum driver reward in all conditions,” he says. Engineered by Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), with a 44 per cent uplift in power, the F-PACE SVR’s 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol engine produces 550PS and 680Nm, enabling it to reach 0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds with a top speed of 283km/h. Aerodynamic enhancements include larger air intakes at the front and side fender vents that lower pressure in the wheel arches, reduce lift and provide additional cooling while also optimising high-speed stability. In addition, unique wheel arch extensions and lower body mouldings provide a low-slung muscularity that sets the SVR apart. An exclusive SVR

bonnet features vents to help extract hot air from the engine bay and provide visual evidence of the SVR’s dynamic intent. At the rear, a unique spoiler is joined by a new bumper housing the quad tailpipes of the Active Exhaust system. The bumper incorporates side strakes that aid aerodynamic performance by smoothing airflow away from the rear of the vehicle. The uprated chassis has progressive front and rear springs that are 30 and 10 per cent stiffer respectively and incorporate an anti-roll bar specification that contributes to a 5 per cent reduction in body roll. New, lightweight forged 21- and optional 22-inch alloy wheels are wider at the rear by 25mm compared to the front and contribute to the SVR’s enhanced handling. The 22-inch wheels are 2.4kg lighter on the front and 1.7kg lighter on the rear and are designed to deliver greater airflow to the uprated larger 395mm front and 396mm rear brake discs. The brake discs feature an advanced two piece construction on the front and rear to reduce weight, further contributing to the SVR’s agile handling. F-PACE SVR also features Jaguar’s Variable Valve Active Exhaust System. This provides a charismatic soundtrack and is another factor behind the SVR’s

increased performance capability as the active system allows increased gas flow. The SVR exhaust is 6.6kg lighter than the standard F-PACE system. The first F-PACE to utilise Jaguar’s rear Electronic Active Differential (EAD), FPACE SVR features a comprehensive range of advanced technologies, each calibrated especially for the task. The torque on-demand All-Wheel Drive system’s Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) control technology has been optimised to maximise the benefit of the EAD, while the software for the Adaptive Dynamics suspension, Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) and Dynamic Driving Mode are all bespoke to SVR. Engaging Dynamic mode initiates faster, more responsive gearshifts, sharper throttle responses and increased steering response for a more engaging driving experience in all conditions. Inside, the F-PACE SVR features slimline performance front seats that provide enhanced lateral support and have signature lozenge quilting and embossed SVR logo. In addition, unique rear seats echo the heavily sculpted designs up front and the SUV’s sports car character is underlined by the Sport Shift Selector.

Finally, the SVR branded steering wheel features tactile aluminium paddle shifters. For all its performance, the SVR retains the practicality and versatility inherent to the PACE family, with its 650-litre loadspace (with rear seats up) unaffected by its enhanced performance. Jaguar’s SUV keeps passengers connected and entertained on the move with 4G WiFi for up to eight devices and is also equipped with the advanced Touch Pro infotainment system with 10-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch HD instrument cluster. Four interior colour themes help to highlight the vehicle’s high performance personality; Red with Jet, Light Oyster with Jet, Siena Tan with Jet and Jet with Light Oyster stitching. Drawing on Jaguar Land Rover’s extensive all-terrain expertise, the F-PACE SVR features a host of advanced technologies to ensure superb all-surface performance. All-Wheel Drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics, All Surface Progress Control and Adaptive Surface Response ensure the SUV can handle conditions in all weathers. New Zealand customers seeking more information or details on how to preorder the Jaguar F-PACE SVR should contact their local authorised Jaguar retailer.

720S hits the track

T

he brand new McLaren 720S GT3 came tantalisingly close to a stunning win on its global competitive debut at the Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi last

weekend. The first GT racer designed and built in-house by McLaren Customer Racing dominated much of the second half of the race at the Yas Marina Circuit before suspension trouble dropped the car to a nevertheless impressive fifth place. The #5 car’s pace – and a totally trouble-free run for 10 hours in the hands of McLaren Automotive Factory Driver Ben Barnicoat (GB) and his teammates Kiwi driver Shane van Gisbergen and Álvaro Parente (PT) – turned heads in a paddock that included top GT racing cars, teams and drivers from around the world. The McLaren 720S GT3 run by McLaren Customer Racing was quick out-of-thebox, setting encouraging times during the three practice sessions on the Yas Marina circuit – home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It was in the hunt for pole position in its first ever qualifying session, with Barnicoat immediately topping the times. Parente and van Gisbergen continued to show impressive pace, however the car was pipped at the post by just half a tenth on aggregate times to take second in the GT3 class ahead of 16 competitors and third overall on the 33-car grid. The race itself was split into two six-hour

events and in the first of these, Barnicoat took the 720S GT3 into the lead after just an hour of its racing career. The combined efforts of all three drivers and the McLaren Customer Racing team would keep the Papaya Spark-coloured car in the hunt for the whole six hours, despite

several incidents and two safety car interventions. The team reached the mid-point of the race in second overall, and ready to attack from the start of the second race. The second part of the race showed the potential of the new McLaren 720S GT3, as

the #5 car headed the charge to the flag. Within two laps van Gisbergen had taken the lead on the back straight, and by the end of Hour 10 the car had lapped the entire field. Unfortunately, the dream of a win on the car’s global race debut was over moments later when an issue with the right front suspension forced van Gisbergen into the pits for repairs. Rapid work from the team saw the car return to action after just 13 minutes and with Ben Barnicoat back behind the wheel, set about chasing down the leaders. In the closing 90 minutes, the gap was reduced and the #5 720S GT3 crossed the line an impressive fifth in the GT3 Pro class and eighth overall, completing 309 laps of the Yas Marina circuit. “It’s been a great start to the competitive life of the 720S GT3, which has proven itself against a world-class field and just as importantly, successfully progressed the development programme. I am incredibly proud of the efforts of the team at the circuit and back in Woking, who have achieved this result against world-class opposition. “The experience of going wheel-towheel with the teams and cars that our customers will be aiming to beat with the 720S GT3 in the future has proved invaluable as we continue to learn lessons about how to get the very best from the car,” Dan Walmsley, Motorsport Director, McLaren Automotive.
