Triton challenges ute market

M

itsubishi New Zealand is so confident about its new Triton utes it expects a 25 per cent increase in sales during the next 12 to 18

months. The company aims to push the Holden Colorado out of the third-best selling ute position with what it says is the most advanced ute on the New Zealand market. The new Triton has a more robust profile, greater ground clearance and is fitted with some of the latest driver assist and safety technology that have traditionally be found on sedans. However company officials say the new model retains the strengths of the existing model - durability, price competitiveness and a 10-year warranty. The new Triton goes on sale next month, with some models around $1000 dearer than the current Triton, the 2 wheel drive models of which are being run-out at a discounted $29,990 plus on road costs. The top of the line Triton VRX models will sell for $49,990, the same price as the existing Triton VRX utes. Mitsubishi New Zealand says the existing Triton is the fastest-growing mainstream 4WD ute on the New Zealand market, claiming 12.2 per cent of the ute market during the nine months to the end of September. “More and more Kiwis are looking to combine the luxuries of a lifestyle vehicle with the performance of a ute and Triton’s

increasing popularity reflects its ability to deliver that,” said Reece Congdon, Mitisubishi New Zealand head of marketing and corporate affairs. Mitsubishi was aiming to take the third best-selling ute position from Holden Colorado within the next year. According to Motor Trade Association registration figures, Triton was trailing Colorado by fewer than 100 units during the year to the end of October. While the Triton has traditionally ap-

pealed to fleet and price-sensitive individual buyers, Mitsubishi New Zealand believes the new models will have broader appeal. The new Triton boasts a more rugged appearance than the existing models, offers more rigidity, and improved off-road performance. The top-end 4-wheel-drive models are equipped with a new off-road mode with gravel, mud/snow, sand and rock settings, offering greater all-terrain performance.

The new Triton models are fitted with hill descent control functions, and all of them will have a new six-speed automatic transmission, which offers smoother acceleration and less engine noise at high speeds. The existing range’s high durability ladder-type frame and high impact protection cabin structure is retained, but there are a host of active safety and driver assistance systems added to the Triton for the first time.

Top gun. Again. T

he world’s favourite sports car has reaffirmed its prized reputation, nabbing the title of Best Convertible in the 2018 Drive Car of the Year awards. Extensive testing by a team of motoring experts was undertaken to determine the winner, with the Mazda MX-5 GT variant claiming top spot after the comprehensive review. The iconic MX-5 stays true to the very essence of what a sports car should deliver – a thrilling, top-down driving experience. And while unfalteringly faithful to maintaining its authenticity, 2018 saw important upgrades across powertrain, dynamics and safety - further delighting the car’s loyal fans and new-purchasers alike. In September, the MX-5 saw advanced technologies applied to each of its engines, SKYACTIV-G 2.0 and SKYACTIV-G 1.5, to extract maximum power balanced with linear response. To match the extra power under foot, manual and automatic transmissions were revised to deliver a sharper response and more direct driving feel. Plus, shift timing at turn-in and torque control at turn-out were tuned for greater precision in sporty driving situations.

The super-transporter T

he manoeuvrability and bespoke design of a Renault Master closed transporter conversion is proving to be a winning formula for the logistics division of Renault Sport Formula One™ Team. Constructed to the team’s exact specification via the Renault Accredited Convertor programme, the Renault Master single-car transporter is used primarily by Renault Sport Formula One™ Team for the transportation of its show vehicles throughout Europe. Its addition To Renault Sport Racing’s transportation fleet, which is supported through an official partnership with the specialised Renault Pro+ commercial vehicle division, enables the team to generate significant savings in terms of cost, efficiency and manpower in comparison to its previous methods of moving static display vehicles to circa 200 events a year. Built by newly-accredited Renault converter, Advanced KFS, the transporter is based on the FWD, 3.5-tonne Master Platform Cab and is powered by the 170hp dCi 170 2.3-litre diesel engine, which utilises twin turbo technology to deliver strong performance while returning up to 37.7mpg, matched to a six-speed manual transmission. The conversion has been engineered to allow a Renault Sport Formula One™ Team show car to be loaded or unloaded by a single person in as little as 15 minutes.

A fine tradition endures

H

yundai knows a thing or two about creating SUVs, and especially so the Santa Fe. With some 20,000 of the first three generation models being sold in NZ it clearly shows that they suit our lifestyles. So they have made sure the new fourth generation models, which come in three variants, Entry, Elite, Limited, and with either diesel or petrol power, are very well set up to carry on this tradition. All seat seven and have Hyundai’s latest generation all-wheel-drive system. As well they are larger than the previously and the exterior is dressed to impress, with with a similar frontal image to that of the Kona with interesting headlights and a cascading grille. There’s a sleek look about both the side profile with the 19-inch alloys and the tidy rear. Prices range from $59,990 for the 2.4-litre petrol Entry model to $82,990 for the 2.2-litre diesel Limited as driven (both plus on-road costs). That may seem to be getting up there for the Limited diesel, but you need to reflect on what it comes with. Things like the spacious, leatherfurnished cabin filled with its innovative comfort and convenience features. These include heated/ventilated front seats, heated middle row seats, three-zone climate-air, an 8-inch colour touchscreen display complete with sat nav and new connected AutoLink system. The Limited’s premium version of this, with its embedded SIM, has an amazing array of easily accessed functions. As well there’s all the latest in SmartSense semi-autonomous active safety and driving assistance technologies. These include automatic emergency

braking (it even senses cyclists and predestrians), an excellent adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, lane-keeping assistance and a 360-degree camera with semi-automated parking functionality. Then from the practical use point of view, the bigger body brings more space, and a larger load area too. The overall cabin ambience is one of class, complete with an appropriately very inviting appearance, enhanced even more by the Limited’s panoramic sunroof. The front seats proved impressively comfortable. There’s lots of adjustment for both, as well as for the driving position – whether you like to sit low or up high for a commanding view of the road. Liked the head-up display to, with its projection of driving and safety info onto the windscreen. Lots of adjustment available for those in the second row as well. Then, while the third row is long distance best for those of smaller build (where according to the TV ad they are likely to sit peacefully), adults can fit over short distances. As well as the many charging points for both phones and small devices, there’s lots of additional technology, even some that alerts the driver when those in the rear are attempting to leave. This system will also lock the rear doors if it detects there is not a safe gap in the traffic. then will also remind you if the infantry, or pets therein, have been forgotten! All seats in use, there’s still usable, preferably soft luggage space. Fold the third row and there’s 547 litres available, and easily loaded via the powered tailgate. While there’s also the 2.4-litre, petrol

motor available, I reckon the heart of the Santa Fe as driven was the excellent 2.2-litre turbo diesel. While it is carried over from the previous model with the same 147kW and 440Nm of torque, it is now ideally mated up with a very smooth, and efficient eightspeed auto. For different driving conditions there’s selectable modes for Eco, Smart, Comfort and Sport. But except for some winding Peninsula roads where Sport was tried, the Smart setting lived up to its name. It constantly ensured a nice balance of quick responses as needed (and accompanying changes in screen colour) but with decent economy. Hyundai claims 7.5L/100km overall which was achievable during driving on the plains, although enjoying winding hilly roads of course increases this. We liked the way both the ride and handling have been set up for Anzac conditions. While sitting relatively flat and surefooted through corners, it still pretty much glides over rougher seal and shingle roads with the all-wheel drive system apportioning drive to front/rear wheels as needed. During normal driving its mostly to the front, but with more to the rear when Sport is selected, or automatically happens in Smart.

Pricing - as driven $82,990. (others petrol and diesel from $59,990) all+ ORCs. Engine: 2.2 litre turbo-diesel, 147kW @ 3800rpm and 440Nm from 1750 to 2750 rpm Transmission:8-speed auto, variable but constant all-wheel-drive. Quoted Economy: 7.5L/100km Safety: Expected 5 star ANCAP, comprehensive driver assist and safety systems. Length: 4770mm. Turning Circle: 11.4 metres Tows: 2000kg. Warranty: 3-year/100,000km. (also for roadside assistance) ,plus tenyears/200,000km body corrosion warranty.

FINALE With this new Santa Fe, Hyundai have come up with an appealing driver and family friendly, all-wheel-drive SUV with excellent safety features and higher ride height. While it sits very well in any car-park where looks may matter, they clearly have, in all respects paid close attention to what NZ drivers, particularly those with active lifestyles expect!

Bikes take centre stage L

ots of enthusiastic bikers from all around the country will be displaying their bikes at the Ashburton Motorcycle Show being staged at the Ashburton Racecourse tomorrow. They know the bike show is going to be great and they can’t wait to take part, no-one more so that Willie Little. Willie has entered two bikes, including his classic 1977 Harley Davidson Sportster 1000cc Iron Head. The bike is totally original, and eight years after buying it Willie is still glad he owns it. “I had bikes before I had a car,” says Willie and he’s kept the Sportster longer that any of the other bikes he’s owned. Ironic really, because he hardly ever rides the Sportster, but having it means a lot to Willie, as does being able to give others an opportunity to see it. And that’s exactly what the Ashburton Motorcycle Show is all about. Willie is a member of the Originals, the group which has organised the show. He says interest in the show has been phenomenal. The family-orientated event is not just about bikes, it will also include a tattoo show, hot-rods, hot food, a bouncy castle and music. The show opens at 10.00am tomorrow morning entry is $15 for adults or $30 for families.

Rarity heading our way

N

ever heard of a Velie? That’s not overly surprising. The company was founded by a grandson of John Deere, Willard Velie, and operated from 1908 to 1928, when the founder died and his son dropped the car line in favour of aircraft. So, it’s no surprise there aren’t many about, and this one – sold new here on July 1, 1925 – is the only Velie in New Zealand. Alan Roberts bought the car when current owner, son Wayne, was born, in 1964. “I used to sit in the centre, between Mum and Dad, and my daughters did the same when they were small,” says Wayne. Alan had owned an Austin 7 Silver Swallow, but wanted something for his growing family, and this car fitted the bill. He paid £140 for it (around $4700 today), not bad considering it had cost £575 when new, at a time when Chevrolets cost £250. Back then it had never been restored – it still hasn’t – though the polished aluminium body was a bit tired, and to refurbish that would cost a fortune, so it was painted gunmetal grey with black trim, as you see it today. The car is powered by a six-cylinder, 21kW (28hp) engine to propel around 2.5 tons, and would cruise at 70 or 80km/h, although Wayne’s happy with 65km/h.

That motor was rebuilt in 1972, and again in the 1980s. Other than that, “it’s stripped the fabric timing gear once.” The Warner (later BorgWarner) three-speed gearbox and Columbus diff are original. “The head was done in about 1959, before Dad bought it, and the upholstery in 1974.” He’s just had the rocker cover nickel redone. “It still had Dad’s name engraved on it from 1966, when he had it done the first time. “It cost him £6, and us more like $600.” As for spare parts, Wayne has his sources. “I go to Dad’s. “He’s got most of what I need under his house.” Folk know he has a Velie, and when parts turn up, that’s where they go. Mind you, the new hubs had to be made when one broke on a Hawerato-Auckland drive three years ago. Wayne had his first ride in it in a carry cot, so it’s appropriate that he bought it from his Dad in 2000. Over the time the family has owned it, Wayne reckons it’s done at least around 322,000km, or nearly 6000km a year. His parents took the car as far as the South Island. Wayne’s not been further than Hawera, but he and his wife, Carrie, plan to drive south to an Ashburton vintage and veteran rally next year.

Stealth one of a kind D

on’t be fooled by the name: The MSO 720S Stealth Theme from McLaren Special Operations will ensure that one McLaren 720S owner stands out from the crowd even more than usual, in a striking car produced as a bespoke order for McLaren retailer, McLaren London. The McLaren 720S can be ordered as standard in one of three specification levels, with MSO Defined options among the additional features offered to customers who want their new car to be unlike others. Beyond this there are opportunities to further personalise a McLaren through MSO’s Bespoke services, where areas such as paint and interior stitching can be developed as themes to create a car that is often, quite literally, one-of-a-kind. ‘Stealth’ was one of the MSO Bespoke themes visualised for the McLaren 720S on its global debut at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show; examples of the Velocity, Track and Pacific themes have already been produced as MSO Bespoke orders. The MSO 720S Stealth Theme was commissioned by McLaren London to be visually even more purposeful than a standard 720S in Performance specification. The scope of the Stealth theme encompasses MSO Defined Sarthe Grey exterior paint – a colour inspired by the McLaren F1 GTR that was victorious at the famous Le Mans Circuit de la Sarthe in 1995 – and Vermillion Red contrast paint to accentuate the lines of the 720S body. The red detailing – on the front of the car and the bonnet and extending back along the bodysides to the rear deck – was hand-painted by master craftsmen and craftswomen in a near-200-hour process. The theme of red accents is continued on the 10-Spoke Super Lightweight alloy wheels, which are finished in MSO Bespoke Satin Black with the outer rim and a single spoke in contrasting Vermillion Red. McLaren 720S Performance specification provides a sports-oriented interior with carbon fibre switch and centre panel surrounds and Alcantara® trim material. MSO Bespoke additions further develop the purposeful theme, with red leather and Apex Red stitching on the fascia and seats.

Vantage tops podium T

he new Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTE recorded its maiden FIA World Endurance Championship victory with a perfectly-judged performance by Danish drivers Nicki Thiim and Marco Sørensen in the 6 Hours of Shanghai. The 2016 FIA WEC GTE Pro champions navigated their way through no less than five

safety cars, and had to contend with two red flag stoppages (for 90 minutes) because of torrential and persistent rain, to bring home the win for the #95 Vantage GTE. Aston Martin was the class of the GTE Pro field all day in difficult conditions and ran one-two, with the sister #97 car driven by Maxime Martin (BEL) and Alex Lynn (GB) also leading at different stages of the event.

With an hour to go there was a possibility of a clean sweep at the top of the podium, but earlier in the race the team had chosen to split the two cars’ strategy to optimise its chances for victory. But following on from a typically committed and hard-charging middle stint from Thiim, Sørensen maintained his composure and delivered an historic victory.

ATTITUDE INJECTION T

oyota has restyled the 14 wide-bodied variants of its 21-ute range as the iconic workhorse of choice celebrates its 50th anniversary globally. These SR and SR5 extra and double cab variants come with a similar tough looking stance first introduced with the range topping SR5 Cruiser earlier this year. “Most of our Hilux range now looks even tougher to back up its long-established reputation for being resilient with the ability to perform in demanding conditions,” said Neeraj Lala, Toyota New Zealand’s General

Manager of Product Planning and New Vehicle Sales. “Like the SR5 Cruiser, these utes make a bold statement that will appeal to even more customers.” The front-end design includes a bold new honeycomb grille with a chrome surround, redesigned front bumper, black bonnet garnish, chrome fog light garnish with SR variants gaining halogen fog lights. SR5 Cruiser variants will change to Dunlop Grandtrek AT25 tyres with white lettering to further enhance their looks. The Hilux was introduced to the Japanese market in 1968 and exports began the following year, with the

first Hilux arriving in New Zealand in 1976. The current model is the eighth generation. More than 18 million have now been sold world-wide in 170 countries. In 1997 the first turbo diesel engine made its debut in the sixth generation, while the seventh generation in 2005 introduced a common rail turbo diesel engine and 4.0 litre petrol V6. Motorists have bought more than 130,000 Hilux since 1976, making it New Zealand’s most popular one tonne ute over the last 42 years. Sales across the Tasman have surpassed one million.
