A new driving experience T he latest reliable workhorse to drive out of the Nissan garage is a vehicle that’s designed to tackle back-country farm tracks, country roads and city streets with equal ease. The Nissan Navara is equipped for the toughest terrain with enhanced off-roading abilities, but at the same time it has a new level of car-like refinement, style, comfort and quality. Nissan New Zealand’s Managing Director John Manley says that improving refinement and delivering a crossover-style driving experience was a key element of the Navara’s development. To help achieve this without compromising the vehicle’s off-road ability, Nissan has designed an all-new five-link rear suspension system for the double cab, providing significantly enhanced ride comfort and improved handling on and off-road. There’s an impressive array of new customer technology including the very latest in performance, safety, technology, comfort and convenience features which, coupled with efficient running costs, make the Navara well suited for both work and leisure. The Around View Monitor is a popular feature of Nissan’s crossover vehicles and unique to the Navara in the ute market. Further safety and convenience features include cruise control, keyless entry and parking sensors.

Knowing that ute owners need their vehicles to earn their keep, the Navara’s load-carrying and towing ability across the range is better than ever. With payload ratings in excess of one tonne across the range and an impressive towing capacity of up to 3500kg, the Navara is ready for the toughest and most demanding of jobs or leisure pursuits.

Tackling hilly terrain? Now you can do it with more confidence and control. On an incline, Hill Start Assist is able to help keep you from rolling backwards when you’re accelerating up a hill from a stop. And Hill Descent Control helps you maintain a steady speed and braking,

so you can get down a steep grade more safely. The Nissan Navara also has a host of safety features standard across the range: seven airbags including driver knee airbag, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).

On a Mystery mission

I

t’s one of the most highly anticipated sports cars of the decade, and it’s coming to New Zealand next month. Sort of ... As part of this morning’s Fieldays announcement, Toyota New Zealand have confirmed that the manufacturer’s FT-1 concept car will be part of their display at the Mystery Creek event. “The FT-1 has travelled the world, and now it’s our turn to showcase our commitment to fun to drive cars with stunning design and performance,” says

Neeraj Lala, Toyota New Zealand’s General Manager of New Vehicle Sales. “The Supra is going to continue re-igniting the passion for exciting performance cars that was started by the 86 coupe.” The FT-1 was first unveiled in 2014, and though we didn’t know it for sure at the time, most quickly drew similarities between it and the Supra of old. It wasn’t until a few years later that Toyota’s Global Chief Engineer, Tetsuya Tada, said he would like to see the ‘Supra’ nameplate return to the Toyota line-up.

Fast forward to 2018, and while we’re still waiting on a proper Supra announcement (let alone a concept car), things are approaching a head. In March Toyota whipped the covers off the Gazoo Racing Supra Concept, which remains our best interpretation of what the road-going sports car will actually look like. It’s expected that the production-model Supra will land in New Zealand in 2019. Fieldays takes place from June 13 to June 16.

Best-seller for a reason

I

t’s back to the future time today! For its 1996 and I well remember my first drive of the then, new to NZ, Outback. It was early spring, the Mount Hutt ski-field road was open, but with light snow on the upper reaches and a covering of around 10cm on the then completely empty car park. All in all a rather fine setting to experience this new Outback, and to test the advantages of the then quite unique Boschdeveloped, ABS braking system. Which as was the case with the also standard air-conditioning, was at that time still mostly only found in high priced, luxury vehicles. My story of that day shows that “we (much younger versions of the writer and Graham Kennedy) were somewhat proactive in testing both the ABS and all-wheeldrive capability, both in the snow covered car-park and on the descent”. Pretty advanced stuff as the ABS was then for Subaru, I suggest that in those days no-one could have predicted that now, twenty or so years later, that the Outback’s standard gear would include the excellent, camera-based EyeSight preventative safety system technology with its array of driver assist features, including adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking control, lane keep assist/departure warning and more. Not forgetting the suite of vision assist

(front and side view monitors/cameras) features, sat-nav, responsive steering, adaptive LED headlights and more that the Premium models have. All of which I have both experienced, and appreciated in recent times, including collecting a new (with just 20km on the odometer) 2.5i Premium for one of the family from Queenstown for delivery to Ashburton. Then very recently driving some 600km in each of the both recently further enhanced 2.5i and 3.6R Premium models. These days the Outback range is Subaru NZ’s best seller. For those not familiar with them, they can perhaps be described as a larger (it’s 4.8 metres long) high-riding (213 mm ground clearance) five-seat station wagon with constant all-wheel-drive and an X factor for off the beaten track. There’s a three model range – two in either Sport or Premium specification with the four cylinder, 129kW/235Nm, 2.5-litre Boxer petrol and revised , very smooth seven-step Lineatronic CVT. The third of course being the 3.6R Premium, also with a Boxer engine, but in its case a very quiet and suitably powerful 3.6-litre six cylinder petrol engine, delivering 191kW and 350Nm of torque. While it has a six rather seven-step CVT it has an extra Sport driving mode for quickest possible responses. Both engines are surprisingly frugal

Roger Hart ROAD TEST

fuel wise, the claimed overall figures being just 7.3L/100km for the 2.5-litre and 9.9L/100km for the 3.6R, the latter which can be easily bettered a during open road cruising. Exterior enhancements for each include a new grille, front bumper and different 18 inch alloy wheels. Tweaks to the spacious interior include a larger, tablet-type centre console. The Outback’s enviable reputation for their ride quality and handling continues with these latest models. Their long travel suspension soaks up bumps, pot holes and corrugations, irrespective of the road, or indeed track surfaces. As well this and the benefits of the combination of directional steering, the allwheel drive system and Bridgestone tyres (they’re quiet on rough seal with very good grip in slippery conditions) really show on loose surfaces and shingle. Then of course for rougher roads and tracks selecting the driver activated X-

mode means one can get to places beyond where most people will be comfortable going, or getting back from, so for the return trip the hill descent control will likely be a blessing! I’ve not driven the 2.5i Sport, but as are its Premium siblings, it is very well set up with safety gear and driver-aids.

FINALE Who knows what, or how we will be driving in a further twenty years! Meantime for those who want to make the most of what our Kiwi lifestyle and countryside offers, the Outback is just so well set up to tackle our such varied terrain and driving conditions with ease. But if the Outback is a bit larger than you want, take a serious look at the smaller 2-litre XV.

Kona covers the night trial with ease

D

uring the recent Ashburton Car Club’s Suzie Morrison Memorial night trial we and the sharp-looking Kona covered a lot more of the countryside than the instructions intended. Lets do it without the help of Google maps, we had decided from the start. And did well until about halfway, when we missed a crucial roadside instruction sign. So lots of additional gravel roads were driven in pouring rain. Which however gave us the unexpected opportunity of appreciating just how well behaved, and predictable the frontwheel-drive Kona was in these conditions (previous experiences having been with the all-wheel-drive 1.6 Turbo version). As well, the bright headlights and comfort of the heated front seats were a definite bonus! Colleen and Steven Pinfold won the night trial. We came 15th, so there’s plenty of scope for Gretchen the navigator, and I to improve our placing next year. Maybe we will even invite Bernard Egan to control a spotlight! The Kona Elite as driven, which was always very easy to find, and particularly so in crowded car-parks costs $36,990 + ORCs. Other Kona are priced from $31,990 + ORCs.

Bentley goes super hi-tech D riving the all-new Bentley Continental GT revealed this luxurious Grand Tourer to be a well-crafted bundle of contradictions. Now into its third generation, the Bentley Continental GT is at once everything you’re expecting it to be, and also everything you’re not. It’s something of a contradictory car. It literally wears its heart on its sleeve; especially in stonking W12 format (and more on this all-new engine in a bit), the Conti GT is every bit the Grand Toure designed to get its affluent enthusiast owners from one side of continental Europe (and other places) to the other in style and have them exit the car at journey’s end with a smile on their face and nary a crinkle in their polo shirt. That it’ll jet its way across endless land masses at pace if required is also a given. The Conti GT has never been short on power, and the 467kW/900Nm mix on offer in the new one, assisted by two twin-scroll turbochargers, make this two-plus ton machine fairly fly, as experienced along the Autostrada in Italy and the Autobahn in Austria during the model’s international media launch last week. Huge sections of the GT are hand-crafted, and that’s no marketing hyperbole; I really do mean “made by hand”. The diamond quilting in the seats and door lining involves precisely 310,675 stitches per car. Detailing inside the LED matrix headlights and the knurling on the metal dials and instrumentation is all influenced by the diamond shapes in cut-crystal glassware. This all sounds very Bentley-like so far. So, where’s the contradiction? All this gentlemanly power, all this traditional elegance. And yet, the Bentley Continental GT is secretly a super high-tech car. Just as the 10sq m of wood veneer inlay in every single car is sustainably sourced

and carefully fitted by hand, just as every car features 2.8km of stitching thread, there are also more lines of software code in the Continental GT than in a Boeing 787 Dreamliner (more than 100,000,000 to be not exact). The back-rear section of the car – incorporating those deep haunches behind the door apertures that give it its signature hunkered-down stance – is presently the largest single super-formed piece of sheet metal in all of automotive manufacturing. That is quite an engineering achievement, as are the new GT’s enormous brakes, which are the biggest iron brake assemblies used on any production car and consist of 420mm front discs with 10 piston calipers and 380mm rear discs with four piston calipers. No ceramics? Bentley states it doesn’t need to bother when its iron engineering remains so solid and consistent. Inside the cabin, a wide touchscreen

(the same as featured in the new Porsche Panamera, reminding for a moment of Bentley’s parentage these days) sits inside a rotating section of dashboard. At the push of a button, the high-tech 12.3-inch display (left) rotates away to reveal traditional analogue gauges or a blank facia extending the trad-look veneer. This component took two years of development work to perfect and features more than 40 parts, including two motors with individual high-precision gearboxes and cooling fans. It’s a little piece of theatre that reminds you James Bond started life in Ian Fleming’s novels driving a Bentley. But when you think about it, the Bentley Rotating Display section is perhaps the perfect embodiment of Bentley in 2018. New technology incorporated with no compromise to traditional materials or attention to detail. The level of detail is unbelievable. More so than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class,

Maserati GranTurismo or anything else in its class. Underneath the Continental GT’s sleek skin there is even more new technology. Bentley has developed a new engine, there is also a new gearbox, new suspension system and new Dynamic Ride active roll-control technology present as well. An updated version of Bentley’s gargantuan 6-litre twin-turbocharged W12 TSI is paired for the first time with an eightspeed double-clutch ZF gearbox. The engine features cylinder deactivation technology so, when at high speed and low revs on the highway, six of the 12 cylinders will shut down, helping the luxury brand achieve better fuel efficiency. It feels grippy and flat through corners, and always with the ability to power out and on to the next curve, thanks to all 900Nm of torque being available from just 1350rpm with those new turbos constantly primed.

M Sport Package suits NSW police just fine

T

he BMW Group Australia is proud to announce a further extension of its relationship with Australian law enforcement agencies, with the supply of authority specification BMW 530ds to the New South Wales Police Force. “Globally, the BMW Group supplies emergency and authority vehicles to a large number of countries, so I am very pleased to see our brand continue this proud tradition in Australia,” said BMW Group Australia CEO, Marc Werner. “We are honoured by our association with the New South Wales Police Force and delighted that our officers will be driving BMW’s safe, efficient and dynamically superior vehicles.” The 530ds will be supplied in a specific authority specification, a variant chosen for its powerful, efficient performance. These vehicles are fitted as standard with the M Sport Package for enhanced dynamics, as well as the M Sport Brake system for additional stopping power. To ensure police remain supported during service, multi-adjustable Comfort seats are also fitted. Popular options, such as a sun roof, are not provided as part of this package, enabling the 530d to be specified with additional authority-specification equipment (such as lighting and sirens) as dictated by service requirements.
