Class-leading technology

O

wning New Zealand’s most popular hybrid SUV just got easier, thanks to a revised price point that brings the cost of MMNZ’s top-spec’d 2019 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) in line with many of its petrol and diesel SUV competitors. At $55,990 (plus On-Road Costs), the new Outlander PHEV VRX is available for $8000 less than the previous top-of-therange model, making it the most luxurious and affordable PHEV Mitsubishi Motors NZ has ever released. With stock arriving later this month, the wait for some Kiwis looking to get into an SUV with EV capability may soon be over. “Mitsubishi Motors is a pioneer in hybrid EV technology and, as much as possible, we don’t want price to be a barrier to people deciding to join the move towards EV motoring,” said Reece Congdon, MMNZ Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs. “At $55,990 (plus ORCs), the new Outlander PHEV VRX is available for $8000 less than the previous top-of-the-range model, making it the most luxurious and affordable PHEV Mitsubishi Motors NZ has ever released. “By bringing the cost of the new PHEV VRX in line with a number of petrol and diesel equivalents on the market, we are offering real choice to our customers. “Kiwis have a long-standing affection for the Outlander badge; the PHEV model was the first hybrid SUV in New Zealand

and, ever since its launch in 2014, it has remained the most popular vehicle in its class.” MMNZ is confident the new model upgrades and lower price point will keep Outlander PHEV top of mind for motorists looking for the fuel-efficiency and lowemission performance of an EV with the convenience and range of a regular SUV.

“There are currently almost 1000 Outlander PHEVs on New Zealand roads – more than any other new hybrid SUV or pure EV on the market – and we believe our latest model will encourage even more Kiwis to get on board.” Both 19MY Outlander PHEV models – XLS and VRX – have been upgraded to deliver a smoother, quieter ride.

A revision of the front and rear suspension and increased use of structural adhesives provides improved comfort and stability, while steering responsiveness has also been enhanced. A sophisticated exterior facelift includes high contrast two-tone alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and a sleek new front and rear design. Inside, a new dynamic front seat design features added bolstering for greater support. Both models gain rear air conditioner vents and one-touch window control from the driver’s seat. At the core of the new 19MY Outlander PHEV remains the same class-leading EV technology that has made Mitsubishi’s hybrid SUV such a well-proven performer, with an electric range of 54km and a combined range of over 600km. Key upgrades to previous editions alongside improvements to New Zealand’s charging infrastructure are broadening the possibilities for PHEV owners looking to go further in pure EV mode. “In 2017, we extended the battery range to 54km, enabled EV priority mode and added DC Fast Charge capability, which recharges the battery from 0 to 80% in around 20 minutes. “At that time, there were less than 50 Fast Charge stations around the country. “There are now more than 100, with more in the pipeline, allowing for longer, more convenient journeys on battery power alone.”

Compact luxury

T

he all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class arrives in New Zealand this month with standard features such as the MBUX multimedia system with widescreen cockpit and touchscreen, plus a host of active standard safety features. The new A-Class is as youthful and dynamic as ever, but grown-up and comfortable like never before. It completely redefines modern luxury in the compact class, and revolutionises interior design. Technologically the new A-Class not only takes first place thanks to MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience: it also offers a number of functions that were previously the preserve of the luxury class. All models of the new A-Class are powered by new, efficient petrol engines and in conjunction with the 7G-DCT transmission.

Available from launch will be the A 200 powered by a new four cylinder called the M 282 with a displacement of 1.33 litres and 120 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque. Combined fuel economy is just 5.7L per 100 km. “Hey Mercedes” One of the strengths of MBUX is its intelligent voice control with natural language comprehension, which is activated by the keyword “Hey Mercedes”. The new LINGUATRONIC (included in MBUX with extended functions and with large media display) supports many infotainment functions, for example, destination input, phone calls, music selection, writing and hearing messages. Conventional voice control systems in cars call for certain fixed commands from their users. Thanks to natural speech recognition,

MBUX’s LINGUATRONIC, on the other hand, obeys virtually every command, recognises and understands nearly all sentences from the fields of infotainment and vehicle operation. The intelligent language assistance is activated either via a button on the steering wheel or with the command “Hey Mercedes”. It’s not the human who has to adapt to the machine, but the other way round. The voice control is also capable of learning. On the one hand it tunes into the user and their voice and also understands nonnative speakers better. The system also no longer answers stereotypically, but varies in the dialogue output too. MBUX is highly personalisable and configurable. It is also capable of learning and adapts to suit the user.

In the Widescreen cockpit, the customer has the opportunity to select from three display styles: alongside Classic and Sport, the Discreet style is also offered as a special feature – all displays are reduced to what is absolutely essential here. Via the 10.25-inch instrument cluster, users can individually configure the information shown there: as an alternative to the classic speed display in the left-hand tube, displays such as the analogue clock, trip computer (from start, from reset, range) or information on the current radio station/media title can be placed there. In the right-hand tube, as an alternative to the rev counter, an assistance graphic, the current consumption, the ECO display or a navigation map can be displayed. All settings can be saved in a profile. If two drivers share a car, each can call up his/her favourite settings easily.

Celebrating pony power T

he sublime weather of Hawaii’s most populous and visited island, Oahu invites topless motoring, and it is the ideal place for those who have not done so to experience this. That’s particularly so in a Mustang convertible. Over there, they are an even more common sight than Rangers are in NZ. Also, given the intensity of the traffic, whether you have a 4 cylinder EcoBoost, or a V8 under the bonnet doesn’t matter – except perhaps for those who may miss the V8’s throaty exhaust burble. For the latest GT version we now have in NZ, that burble comes from an even more eager, reworked version and louder, if you so wish, version of the 5-litre V8. It’s keen to rev and now produces 339kW at 7000rpm and 556Nm of torque at 4600rpm. These are increases of 33kW and 26Nm respectively which mainly arise from a new high-pressure direct injection system, the results of which include more low-end torque and improved fuel efficiency, but also the ability to rev higher than any previous Mustang GT. Meanwhile the four-cylinder EcoBoost version now delivers 224kW, but has a 9Nm increase in torque, to 441Nm at 3000rpm. Although a new 6-speed manual with a a twin-disc clutch is available for the GT, I imagine that after time driving one with the new 10-speed (which the EcoBoost shares) over the over the Crown Range and further, that the auto will be chosen by the majority. And that’s coming from a dedicated follower of manuals! This excellent auto has a wide-ratio span and, left to itself, shifts very quickly and smoothly in all situations, whether you are going fast or driving in traffic/built up areas. It’s new electronic control system includes unique tunes for different drive modes and features real-time adaptive shift scheduling to ensure it in the right gear at the right time. There’s also shift paddles for

those who think they may be able to do better! Keen Mustang spotters will notice the lower, reshaped bonnet, repositioned air intakes, the new grille, the LED lights, front and rear, and the GT’s quad exhausts. External options include a single-wing rear spoiler. Inside much of the cockpit now has a more premium look and feel to it. New technologies include a 12-inch all-digital instrument cluster, with which you can customise the gauge layout and colours for either normal, sport and track modes. There’s also the easy to use Sync3, which includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and sat-nav in its 8.0-inch, full-colour screen. Restyled and comfortably supportive seats with both heating and ventilation are

age available which is said to optimise the ride and handling in all situations. Of course there’s many new driver assist/safety technologies as well. They now include autonomous emergency braking, with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning/ lane-keeping assist, auto headlights and more. So what will it cost to become a Mustang owner? Well, an EcoBoost Fastback auto is $62,990, the Convertible auto, $67,990, while the GT Fastback (manual or auto) is $79,990 and the GT Convertible (auto only) is $84,990. For all, on-road costs are additional. But wait – there’s more, for those who want or need even more! Come October just fifty, special edition, Mustang Bullitts land in NZ to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Steve McQueen film. In the movie those of an appropriate age joined the Hollywood legend’s fantastic drive in a 1968 Mustang about the streets of San Francisco. This remains one of the silver screen’s best ever car chases! They will be the most powerful Mustangs so far sold by Ford NZ, and are

And in case there’s a very odd driver who chooses not to listen to the exhaust’s stunning orchestration, there’s a premium, 12-speaker audio system. there as well, and Recaro sports seats are another option. Even the GT’s engine note can be adjusted via an active valve exhaust system with the choices of quiet, normal, track (noisy) or sport (rather noisy). On all models, there’s new shock absorbers for better ride control, and suspension changes for sharper response and handling. The GT’s suspension is firmer than that of the EcoBoost; as well it has Brembo brakes and a limited slip diff. There’s also a $3000 MagneRide magnetic shock absorber pack-

said to preview the driving experience with a set of distinctive exterior hallmarks, that in no uncertain terms makes this a ‘McQueen’ Mustang. This starts with the same dark green paintwork, as had the Fastback he drove in the film. This is set off by bright-red calipers of the Brembo brakes lurking behind special, gloss-black 19-inch alloys. Then under the bonnet is a more powerful version (345kW) of the 5-litre V8 complete with a special induction/manifold system and powertrain control module that is shared with the Shelby Mustang GT3. There’s a six-speed manual and revmatching system, which delivers smoother downshifts accompanied by a blip of the engine, adding to the vocal drama delivered from the four mode active valve exhaust. The Bullitt comes with MagneRide suspension which is optional for the regular GT. Expectedly the cabin will be unique, but high spec, and offers signature tributes taken straight from the original Bullitt Mustang. There’s Bullitt notations, unique finishes including a stark-white, cue-ball gear-shift knob, green-stitched dash, door trims and leather Recaro seats. It also has all its siblings’ driver assist/ safety technology, as well the same, configureable 12-inch virtual display, as used in Fords Le Mans-winning GT sports car. And in case there’s a very odd driver who chooses not to listen to the exhaust’s stunning orchestration, there’s a premium, 12-speaker audio system. So should you wish to join in and celebrate the 50th anniversary in October of Steve McQueen’s Bullitt, with an individually numbered Bullitt of your very own, I suggest you had better front up quickly with your $93,490 (plus ORCs)!

and Rover took its 70th anniversary celebrations to new heights by visiting a remote rural community in West Bengal that relies on a fleet of classic models for its very survival. Known as the Land of Land Rovers, the rural location in deep in the Himalayas is reliant on a fleet of meticulously maintained Series Land Rovers dating back as far as 1957. A film, released this week, highlights the spectacular 31km journey made often by residents of Maneybhanjang in West Bengal, India to Sandakphu for their means of living. Towering gradients, rock-strewn pony tracks and treacherous weather are just some of the hazards faced on a daily basis by the residents and their Land Rovers on the journey to the hilltop village, which sits at an altitude of 3636m. This year marks 70 years since the original Land Rover made its debut at Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948. Land Rover is marking this milestone with a series of celebrations throughout 2018, including a special broadcast, record-breaking convoys and a display in London’s Design Museum.

Ninja

More than just high performance

K

awasaki proudly introduces a new sport model into this highly competitive arena. Clad in sharp new Ninja styling, the new Ninja 400 ABS KRT delivers greater performance than its predecessor care of all new engine and chassis that are more powerful and significantly lighter. But like the Ninja 300 that preceded it, this new Ninja model possesses much more than high performance. The new model takes the winning formula that drive the success of the Ninja 250R and its successors, and amplifies it. Not only does the Ninja 400 offer stunning, high quality looks, its stronger engine performance, light, predictable handling and relaxed, sporty riding position make it both fun and easy to ride.

This duality – the ability to offer excitement and ease of riding to a wide range of customers – is sure to make the new Ninja 400 ABS KRT a fan favourite once again. Measuring 310mm (the same disc size used on the Ninja ZX-14R), the Ninja 400’s semi-floating front disc offers sure stopping power. A rigid new front brake master cylinder helps eliminate ineffective (idle) stroke, contributing to controllability, while carefully selected brake hose dimensions and material contribute to brake touch. ABS models feature the latest ABS unit from Nissin, the most compact and lightweight available. The Ninja 400’s all new 399cm3 engine delivers a balance of performance and controllability. The new engine offers increased performance at all rpm compared to its predecessor, with good power

feeling. Smooth, predictable response contributes to an easy-to-control engine character. Thanks to its efficient design, the compact, lightweight engine has a size on par with 250cc engines. Designing the engine from scratch allowed the engine layout to be optimised for size, weight and efficiency. The new unit is comparable in size to that of the 2013-2017 Ninja 250. Numerous weight reduction efforts keep weight to a minimum – despite a larger displacement. A clean design trimmed of any unnecessary items, and a revamped layout enable a slim engine and a cooling system with minimised external piping. The Ninja 400 features a trellis frame similar in design to that of the Ninja H2. Kawasaki’s advanced dynamic rigidity analysis was used to ensure optimum rigidity with light weight. The engine is rigid-mounted and used as a stressed member. The new frame design contrib-

utes significantly to the bike’s low curb mass. Head-turning looks have always been a forte of Ninja models, regardless of displacement. The new Ninja 400 boasts futuristic new Ninja styling inspired by the mighty Ninja H2. The large-volume bodywork attracts attention, and gives the impression of a larger machine. This impression is reinforced by the high-class design and superb fit and finish, which are comparable to bikes from a larger-displacement class. Relaxed rider triangle accommodates a wide range of rider sizes and riding situations. Compared to some other models, the elevated handle position and slightly footforward footpeg position put the rider in a position to control the bike while also offering rider comfort.

Daffodil Rally returns I n a repeat of an event initiated last year the Vintage Car Club Daffodil Rally returns this year, and it’s going to be big! CORNER RASCAL

H

yundai Motor Company’s Thomas Schemera and Albert Biermann unveiled the N brand philosophy and vision at the Nürburgring in Germany, highlighting the company’s goal to create high performance vehicles that adhere to high standards of excellence, while giving drivers vehicles that are as fun-todrive as they are practical. “i30 N, Veloster N and i30 Fastback N have the same performance gene and share a strong character,” said Thomas Schemera, Executive Vice President, Head of High Performance Vehicle & Motorsport Division. “They are equipped with sophisticated technology and design elements. “At Hyundai, we always accept new challenges and try different things to deliver groundbreaking experiences for our customers. “We aren’t here to simply build cars, we want to create emotions, feelings, and desire.” Hyundai N’s name and reputation were established in global motorsports. Since its inception in 2015, N has performed at the highest level, racing with success in the FIA World Rally Championship, the Nürburgring’s VLN series, the TCR International Series, Pirelli World Challenge, and the gruelling Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race. Hyundai’s competition-honed N vision and philosophy come to life in a systematically structured product portfolio of world-class consumer and competition vehicles including halo models built around high performance powertrains and chassis that deliver outstanding vehicle dynamics.

N models including the i30 N and Veloster N offer exclusive engine performance and dynamic technology innovations to satisfy performance-oriented enthusiasts. The introduction of the latest N car, the i30 Fastback N, completes the first phase of the N performance vehicle rollout. The new N Line, characterised by N-

practicality so that they are fun to drive every day. Every N car loves cornering, hence the nickname we have given to their character: Corner Rascal. “Whether it’s urban commuting or track driving, N handles it beautifully.” Biermann used his extensive knowledge and experience developing high-performance production cars to spearhead the Hyundai N Brand’s development. The name N represents two important elements. First, the Namyang district in South Korea where Hyundai Motor Group’s global R&D centre is located and the N brand was first born. Second, the Nürburgring racetrack in Germany, which is home to Hyundai’s Technical Center and used to hone the N vehicles. Finally, the N logo itself is also a graphical representation of a classic racetrack chicane; a tight serpentine turn in the road.

We aren’t here to simply build cars, we want to create emotions, feelings, and desire

specific design and performance-enhancing elements, further widens the range of choices available to customers. These vehicles will be instantly distinguishable by their differentiated design elements. Finally, N Options will offer N-produced customisation parts for drivers who desire improved performance and uniqueness. Rather than focus on outright performance numbers, the N experience is built to get the driver’s heart racing. Beats per minute (BPM) are prioritised over revolutions per minute (RPM). With this fun-to-drive nature as its defining characteristic, the N models deliver the agile cornering ability you expect from a sports car combined with everyday drivability and race track capability. “We aren’t afraid to do things differently here,” said Albert Biermann, President and Head of Vehicle Performance Division. “Our N cars balance performance and

Veloster N The Hyundai Veloster N is the first USmarket N performance model. It offers a comprehensive degree of exterior, interior and mechanical differentiation beyond the Veloster Turbo. Veloster N features an exclusive N-design front fascia and grille with dedicated forward air ducts for enhanced brake cooling. The design and technical elements that define Veloster N, including the N Power Sense Axle, upgraded turbo, tires, brakes and interior features, have ultra-high performance at their core, and set it apart from its competitors. Veloster N offers a range of

driver-controlled performance parameters via its N Grin Control drive mode selection system. The custom mode allows comprehensive driving character preferences via uniquely customisable settings for each tunable driving attribute. Every drive in the Veloster N is an exciting ride built to delight and engage the driver.

i30 Fastback N The i30 N and i30 Fastback N share the same blueprint: create a thrilling driving experience that emphasises BPM (Beats Per Minute). The new i30 Fastback N extends the lineup of Hyundai high-performance models as the second N vehicle to be offered in Europe. This builds on the successful launch of the i30 N. The i30 Fastback N is unique in its segment, combining the sophisticated design of the i30 Fastback with the emotional thrills of the five-door i30 N. The i30 Fastback is the only five-door coupe in the mainstream C-segment, and the new N model enhances its unique design with model-specific performance and styling upgrades. More details on this model will be announced later this year, closer to its launch. Initial sales of Hyundai N products are going beyond expectations. Almost 3000 i30 N units were sold in the first half of 2018 in Europe. 100 units of the i30 N First Edition in Germany were sold out in just 48 hours, purely online, and are still on a hot streak. In the UK, i30 N sales were 190 per cent over expectations in the first half of the year and are on target to reach 1000 units by the end of 2018.
