The classic seven-seater

T

he Tiguan Allspace is an independent version of the most successful SUV made in Germany, with up to seven seats and more luggage space. An extended wheelbase and greater overall length make the Tiguan Allspace a most spacious SUV: by folding down the backrests of the second row of seats, the cargo space available can be boosted from 760 litres to as much as 1920 litres. The Tiguan Allspace also offers more comprehensive standard equipment; this underlines the model’s positioning between the standard-wheelbase Tiguan and the exclusive Touareg. Unique design features for the Allspace include lengthened rear doors, while the bonnet has also been raised at the front above the radiator grille to adapt the proportions to the longer overall length (an extra 215mm on the 5-seater Tiguan). A unique, defining line accentuates the side window design that rises behind the C-pillar. The roof has also been redesigned: striking structural lines are being used for the first time instead of a smooth roof surface. Just like the ‘classic’ Tiguan, the Tiguan Allspace is also available in on-road and off-road versions. The latter combines an off-road package together with special engine underbody protection that extends to the bumper. The off-road front section improves the vehicle’s ramp angle by seven degrees. The Tiguan Allspace of course also remains capable of off-road driving, with a rugged 4MOTION all-wheel drive system that includes premium class technology for use on and off paved surfaces.

Cutting-edge technology and connectivity mean, in this case, the option of Volkswagen’s Active Info Display (fully digital instruments) and a Head-up Display in the R-Line model that rises

electronically from the dash at a push of a button. Volkswagen itself has recently launched the all-new Volkswagen Touareg – its flagship luxury SUV – and an exciting new

crossover – the T-Roc – is also set to be launched in the coming weeks. The Tiguan Allspace has received 5 stars in Euro NCAP safety ratings and is available locally through Miles Continental.

E-Type goes electric F

ollowing an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the original concept for ‘the most beautiful electric car in the world’, Jaguar Classic has confirmed it will offer all-electric E-types for sale. The news follows the iconic EV sports car’s successful debut in concept form at Jaguar Land Rover Tech Fest in September 2017. Combining its restoration expertise with cutting-edge technology from the Jaguar I-PACE, the award-winning zero-emissions performance SUV, Jaguar Classic will offer tailor-made E-types restored and converted to electric power at the same Classic

Works facility as its outstanding E-type Reborn restorations in Coventry, UK. An EV conversion service for existing E-type owners will also be offered. The Jaguar E-type Zero concept not only drives and looks like an E-type, it also offers outstanding performance, with quicker acceleration than the original Series 1 E-type. Jaguar Classic is targeting a range in excess of 170 miles for all-electric E-types, helped by the car’s low kerb weight and sleek aerodynamics. The concept is powered by a 40kWh battery, which can be recharged in six to seven hours. Apart from its state-of-the-art powertrain, modi-

fied instrumentation and fascia showcasing the latest touchscreen infotainment, the E-type Zero concept is largely original. Using an electric powertrain with similar weight and dimensions to the outgoing petrol engine and transmission means the car’s structure, including suspension and brakes, has not changed, keeping the driving experience in line with the original vehicle. Jaguar NZ general manager Steve Kenchington says Kiwi enthusiasts will also have access to this new model and customers should register their interest at their local dealership.

Roadster re-loaded

R

evealed under the Californian sun this week was BMW’s reloaded Roadster. The Pebble Beach Golf Links near Monterey, the well-known venue of the Concours d’Elegance being held there a little later, was the setting for the world premiere of the new BMW Z4. With dynamic proportions, emotional design and fascinating sportiness, the open-top two-seater will take the classic roadster concept into the world of today and tomorrow. In Pebble Beach, the Munich-based premium carmaker presented the exclusive BMW Z4 M40i First Edition (combined fuel consumption: 7.1-7.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 162-168 g/km*). The limited special edition of the roadster inspires not only with the agility, precision and dynamic handling characteristics that are so typical of BMW M Performance models, but also with particularly sophisticated design and equipment features, including a body paintwork in Frozen Orange metallic. The new edition of the roadster celebrated its world premiere at precisely the same location as the first public presentation of the BMW Concept Z4 last year. With its puristic, dynamic and progressive design language, the concept vehicle presents a vision of a charismatic sports car which, thanks to the production model, now becomes reality.

Just a glance at the new BMW Z4’s proportions leaves no doubt about its dynamic potential. The central sitting position for the driver, the low centre of gravity, perfectly balanced 50:50 axle load distribution, wide tracks and a compact wheelbase form the ideal prerequisites for inspiringly agile handling and intense driving pleasure. The BMW Z4 M40i First Edition fulfils these expectations in every aspect thanks to an extremely powerful 250 kW/340 hp, straight six-cylinder engine and a sports

suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Sport braking system and an electronically controlled M Sport differential in the rear axle transmission. The BMW M Performance takes a mere 4.6 seconds to sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h. Vertically aligned headlights, the BMW kidney grille sporting a mesh design, the bonnet stretching sports car-like over the wheels, large air breathers on the front wheel arches and the distinctive spoiler integrated into the rear lid all contribute

towards the characteristic look of the new BMW Z4. The design of the interior also places the focus on the puristic sportiness of the new BMW Z4. Likewise, the clearly structured arrangement of all control elements enhances the focus on the driving experience inside the new BMW Z4. Moreover, for a perfect start into a new roadster era, the new BMW Z4 M40i First Edition offers specific design and equipment features that add exclusive accents to the car’s sporty flair. The expressive body paintwork in Frozen Orange metallic is combined with an electrically operated textile soft top in anthracite with silver effect, the BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line, black exterior mirror caps and 19-inch light alloy wheels boasting a bicolour, double spoke design. The interior of the edition model comprises the Vernasca black leather trim with decorative stitching, electrically adjustable seats with memory function, the option ambient light and the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System. Adaptive LED headlights with matrix function for the high beam, BMW HeadUp Display featured for the first time in a roadster and the BMW Live Cockpit Professional offering the latest networking technology underpin the advanced status the tradition-steeped concept of a two-seater, open-top sports car has reached with the new BMW Z4.

The chic all-rounder W

hile of course SUVs and utes claim the major share of the new in NZ market, small cars also remain strong favourites. The latest Swift range continues to be the best selling, privately purchased cars amongst these, particularly so the GL which is priced from $19,990 (plus ORCs). But then there’s the very appealing Sport versions. I have previously enjoyed the 6-speed manual and now, the 6-speed auto. With the manual car I commented that some cars can put a smile on your face as soon as you get behind the wheel, and that the Sport is definitely one of these. So does switching from the manual to the auto change this? Lets see! Obviously the auto has the same 1.4-litre four cylinder turbo-petrol that produces 103kW at 5500rpm, and more importantly delivers its maximum torque of 230Nm of torque, just where it’s best utilised, from 2500 to 3500rpm. Plus the engine also delivers strongly, without any noticeable turbo-lag from lower revs. All of which the “proper” six speed auto, with its well chosen ratios for sporty driving, certainly makes the best possible use of. Traditionally I’ve always favoured a manual gearbox. However the recent run of excellent autos experienced, including that of the Sport, are also mind-changing. Particularly so when you factor in that the Swift’s light and strong new Heartech platform means an all-up weight of just under 1000kgs and a resulting torque-to-

weight ratio of 237Nm. It rivals that of some much more powerful, and expensive, sports cars. So left to do its own thing, the 0-100kmh dash happens in 8 seconds, or a little less with judicious use of the large steering wheel-mounted paddles. Of course that means with the combination of nicely weighted, sharp, electric steering, that well-sorted chassis with its Monroe shock-absorbers and large stabilisers, corners are there to be enjoyed. Straight away it has you grinning from corner to corner, especially so on the likes of the road to the Coleridge power station, where the handling, grip from the 195/45R Continental Sport tyres and ride can really be appreciated. But then the Sport is also great when you want to chill instead of thrill, for on most surfaces road noise is well suppressed. The engine, which when pressing on makes the sounds you want to hear, is suitably quiet at 100km/h cruise. The Sport is easy to drive about town, and park as well because of its neat size, tight turning circle and reversing camera. Looks-wise the Sport distinguishes itself with its honeycomb grille, carbon fibre look-a-like body dressings, excellent LED headlights, rear spoiler, 17-inch alloys and neat twin exhausts. While all new Swifts are slightly smaller and lighter, their wheelbase is 20mm longer and there’s more space inside, especially now for two adult (three at a pinch) rear passengers. But of course it’s the driver and front passenger who get priority, with their shapely and comfortable red-stitched sports seats.

SUZUKI SWIFT SPORT Roger Hart ROAD TEST

Seated therein there’s plenty of headroom and very good vision all round. They’re rather easy to get in and out of to! The dash and instruments also have red highlights, the neat steering wheel with its squared off lower section also. Alloy pedals set the mood as well. The 7.0-inch colour touchscreen infotainment system has dedicated sat-nav, bluetooth, reversing camera, and smartphone capability. There’s a 6-speaker sound system, climate air-con and key less entry/pushbutton start. Although there’s also a display showing both turbo boost and G-forces, there’s no digital speedo. Also length extensions for the sun visors for when they are against the doors would be advantageous. The boot has quite a deep floor and holds a handy 242 litres of stuff. There’s no spare however, just a sealant kit. There’s a raft of standard driver assist and safety systems on board including much of the latest technology, such as adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking and lane departure warning.

■■ Pricing: $29,990. (Manual $28,500) - both plus ORCs. ■■ Engine: 1.4-litre 4 cylinder turbo petrol, 103kW and 230Nm of torque. ■■ Transmission: 6-speed auto –frontwheel-drive. ■■ Quoted Economy: 6.1L/100km. ■■ Safety: 6 air bags, comprehensive advanced driver assist/safety technology package. 5-star ANCAP rating. ■■ Kerb to kerb turning circle: 10.4 metres. ■■ Warranty: 5 years of warranty (100,00k) and 5-year roadside assistance.

VERDICT The Sport auto showed it is a great all rounder! It not only offers performance and fun from within its neat, desirably chic styling, but is also an easy, rather charming, comfortable and practical everyday driver.

Supercar triple treat

I

t’s been said that good things come in threes, and it’s hard to deny it here... Bugatti, Lamborghini, and McLaren all revealed new metal over the weekend — though all three have their differences. The ‘Bug’ in this case was the Divo; a 1103kW return to the company’s coachbuilding roots. It’s powered by a familiar 8.0-litre quadturbo W16 and is claimed to be capable of a limited top speed of 380km/h. That’s not a huge amount in Bugattispeak, but the company stress that the Divo is more about usable performance than outright top-speed silliness. Next to the its Veyron and Chiron forefathers, the Divo certainly carries a more athletic aesthetic with its bevy of creases

and aerodynamic aids. Combined with less weight than the Chiron, and it should make for a potent thing. Not that many of us are ever going to get the chance to steer one. Just 40 will be produced, and all are sold. From Lamborghini meanwhile comes the Aventador SVJ. A sneak peek of the SVJ late last week via leaked imagery, and with more comprehensive pictures now released the SVJ does not disappoint. This is the swansong for the much loved Aventador. It comes equipped with the same 6.5-litre V12, although it’s been tweaked to offer 575kW and 720Nm. It will claim 100km/h in 2.8 seconds, hit a top speed of 350km/h, and we already know that it’s an absolute beast on a circuit thanks to its Nurburgring record. And not to be left out,

McLaren joined the supercar party too – albiet from a slightly different angle. The British company with the Kiwi logo revealed the next car in their succession of GT3 racers; the 720S GT3. It replaces the 650S GT3 as the company’s GT-car contender to race against the likes of MercedesAMG’s GT and Bentley’s Continental. It’s based around the same MonoCage II carbonfibre cell as the road car, and it’s powered by the same M840T 4.0-litre twinturbo V8 engine – albeit a racing variant. Testing for the 720S GT3 is under way, ahead of its

motorsport debut in 2019. With a bit of luck, we see some of them come our way via the Australian GT Championship. “It was an incredibly exciting moment for us to see our new 720S GT3 begin the intensive track-based phase of a development program that we are confident will provide our customers with a first-class GT race car,” said McLaren CEO, Mike Flewitt. “Enabling our customers to go racing is integral to the business strategy of McLaren Automotive and we are committed to supplying teams with exceptional GT cars and the world-class support to get the most out of them.”

STEALTH

y-

Passport to adventure T he show-stopping McLaren 600LT in Stealth Grey by MSO, produced by bespoke division McLaren Special Operations, made its global reveal on the Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance last Sunday. Finished in a Stealth Grey MSO Bespoke paint, this unique car features a wide selection of upgrades from both the MSO Defined catalogue of options and MSO Bespoke customer choices, giving a preview of how much personalisation can be incorporated into McLaren’s lightest, most powerful road-legal Sports Series car. Introduced in July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the McLaren 600LT epitomises the McLaren philosophy of producing lightweight sportscars and supercars that deliver extreme performance and exceptional driver engagement. Featuring the unique LT top-exit exhaust, the car delivers 600PS and can sprint to 60mph in just 2.8 seconds on its

way to a maximum speed of 204mph. “MSO Bespoke was established to help customers realise their dreams and allows an almost limitless level of customisation where imagination is the only restrictive factor. “With MSO Defined we offer a range of personalisation beyond the standard factory options,” commented Ansar Ali, Managing Director of McLaren Special Operations. “For this special 600LT we have combined a sprinkling of both to create a car that showcases the lightness and trackfocused performance of this latest Longtail variant.” The exterior of the car is distinguished by a Stealth Grey Bespoke paint finish with a Matt Black and McLaren Orange Exterior Pack to accent the car’s aerodynamic features. The iconic Visual Carbon Fibre Roof Scoop, inspired by the legendary McLaren F1 Longtail, is a key MSO Bespoke addition

and operates as a fully functional air intake system that invigorates the driving experience with its active air induction sound. A track telemetry camera is also seamlessly integrated into the scoop cover to record inspirational moments. Other MSO Defined options on the car include all three Carbon Fibre Upgrade packs available for the 600LT, which include door mirrors, exterior door inserts front splitter, rear bumper, diffuser, and rear deck and service cover. An MSO Defined Carbon Fibre Roof and Cantrails, plus Carbon Fibre Front Fender Louvres – which help to further reduce weight – are also fitted. Ultra-Lightweight 10-spoke Forged Alloy Wheels with a Gloss Black finish complete the overall ‘Stealth’ look. Inside, the McLaren’s occupants are reminded of the 600LT’s track-focused heritage with a myriad of MSO touches including Super-Lightweight Carbon Fibre Racing Seats – taken straight from the

McLaren Senna – featuring a McLaren Orange contrast stitch to mirror the exterior striping; a Carbon Fibre Interior Upgrade Pack including central tunnel and door insert panels; and the harness bar and 6-point harnesses from the MSO Clubsport Pro Pack. The interior’s character is further transformed by the presence of the visual carbon fibre roof scoop cover incorporated into the headliner and the twin visual carbon fibre intake hoses for the scoop that are seamlessly integrated into the 600LT’s cabin design. Adding a touch of extra luxury is the upgraded 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Audio System for enjoying those drives to the track, while some beautiful detail touches that complete the picture include Bespoke Embroidery in the headrests, the discreet etching of 600LT on the throttle pedal and a Bespoke set of hand-painted keys that unlock the passport to 600LT adventures.

Mitsubishi Motors’ very best test their mettle

M

MNZ has demonstrated strength in depth across its dealership network over months of rigorous testing – but as the country’s top individuals from service, parts and sales departments went head-to-head in this year’s final, it was Christchurch Mitsubishi which set the gold standard. Twelve finalists, who emerged from four qualifying rounds held throughout the year, were put through their paces in four categories at the Heritage Hotel in Queenstown on Monday, August 27. The sales category was a new addition this year, included to allow sales staff to showcase their skills against their colleagues in other parts of the country. The overall winners were:

* Best Service Technician: Hamish McDonald (Christchurch Mitsubishi) * Best Service Advisor: Michael Strudwick (Mexted Mitsubishi) * Best Parts Advisor: Steve Bamber (Christchurch Mitsubishi) * Best Vehicle Sales Professional: Tania Watene (Christchurch Mitsubishi) MMNZ General Manager Aftersales, Noel Comerford, said that while the competition was extremely tight, the representatives from Christchurch Mitsubishi had demonstrated exceptionally high expertise and consistency across all areas to take a near-clean sweep. Only Michael Strudwick from Mexted Mitsubishi in Tawa, Wellington, was able to break up the party and secure his second win in three years.

“It was great to see all of our finalists performing at such a high level,” said Comerford. “Michael has won the competition before, so he knows what it takes to be the best, but with the standard being raised every year, he has had to work hard to regain his title. “What can we say about Christchurch? “What an impressive result from a single dealership. Each individual won on their own merits, although it is clear that, as a team, they share a common goal of exceptional customer service – and a drive to deliver on that. “Well done also to Tania as the first winner in our sales category.” MMNZ is the only company in the Mitsubishi Motors global network to include

parts and sales categories in their internal skills competition. “We continue to look for ways to improve customer experience, and to motivate and reward dealership representatives,” said Comerford. “We want to be the best in the country at what we do, and we’re extremely proud that the individuals across our network share that desire.” Each of the finalists was required to complete a theory examination first, before demonstrating their skills in a practical challenge. The winners of the Best Service Technician and Best Service Advisor categories will compete against the very best from around the world in a global skills competition held in Japan in February 2019.

Express. With grunt. O

n Monday, we travelled to Bathurst to get our mits on the new RAM 1500, ahead of its launch to the New Zealand market. The 1500 is the baby of the RAM range, so to speak. It doesn’t necessarily look like that much of a baby, but it’s 213mm shorter in length, 49mm shorter in height, and almost a tonne lighter than the larger 2500 model. Pricing for the Kiwi market will start at $94,990 for the entry-level Express model. The Laramie we’ve driven here (chrome bumpers are the giveaway) starts at $114,990, with the equivalent 2500 another $50k on top of that. So, what do you need to know about the RAM 1500? Our full debrief will come later on, but for now here’s some of our first impressions.

Kiwis get the best (sort of)

That’s mainly to do with the thing under the bonnet. Australia get much more choice when it comes to the 1500 model. Along with the six models both markets share (four Express models including the ‘Black Pack’ and two Laramie models) Australians also get the option of choosing different axle ratios – either the standard 3.92 or the optional 3.21. All models get the same Hemi V8 (producing 291kW at 5600rpm and 556Nm at 3950rpm), and unsurprisingly it’s a charming thing to toy with. But, it’s noticeably punchier with the 3.21 axle ratio fitted. And all 1500s coming to New Zealand will have this ratio as standard because, according to RAM, we love grunt. It’s quicker off the mark (it’ll do the 0–100km/h sprint in less than eight seconds), and to our ears it even made the engine sound a little richer. The only gripe is that towing capacity shrinks with our 3.21 axle ratio from 4500kg to 3500kg. But, if you inquire with RAM about wanting a 3.92 instead, they could be open to doing a deal ... And those wanting a diesel should just sit tight. There’s one on the way.

great fit and finish, and they remained creak-free throughout the day despite some spirited off-roading shaking things up a touch.

How’s the branding

The amount of badges and logos plastered all over the 1500 is incredible. Americans love their use of vehicles as symbols of self, so of course it’s natural for a product like the 1500 to scream its presence from the roof-tops. But even along that narrative it’s pretty extreme. Take the cabin, for instance. Along with the RAM logo on the steering wheel there’s also: A RAM logo above the speedo and tacho. Logos on the doormats. A sly logo, peeking over the top of the dash. Another over the top of the huge central arm rest. On top of those, the Laramie also gets these pressed into the seats. And finally there’s another Laramie logo on the passenger side of the dashboard.

Those wanting a diesel sit tight. There’s one on the way

It still drives like a truck

The end of American cabins as we know them?

Cabins in American cars have always copped flack for perceived cheapness, generally regarding material quality and fit and finish. The 1500’s cabin though is probably one of the most well thought out interior spaces we’ve seen in a long time. Storage and space (including in the second row) is unsurprisingly immense. But, it’s the barrage of little touches that help take it a step above. There’s a little ridged section in the centre console that phones can be perched on (it even includes apertures for plugs to

flow through), and through the RAM U-Connect system you can even switch between using two paired phones while on the run.

Seamless

Just staying with the interior for a second. Switching a predominantly left-hand drive vehicle to being right-hand drive markets like New Zealand is pretty finicky work. And there’s only one place in all of Australia is officially authorised to do it — Socobell. And their work is exceptional. The dashboards in our test trucks had

While the rest of the motoring world is trying its darnedest to be future facing with implementation of the latest and greatest tech, the 1500 sticks with the tried and true. Probably to its own benefit. Granted it’s still packed to the rafters with kit, including cylinder de-activation, electronic brake distribution, braking assist, and both trailer brake and trailer sway control. But fundamentally, the RAM 1500 is still an old-school, dual cab body-on-frame, beast of a thing. The recirculating ball steering is sharp enough to guide the brute effectively, but it’s balanced out with bouncing suspension that constantly begs for some all-balancing payload with each and every bump in the road. Typical fare from most work horses.
