RAV4 deserves its popularity T he 2018 Toyota RAV4 has a lot going for it. 12 hours on the mountain M ercedes-AMG GT3 race cars in a star-studded, fivepronged attack on the 2018 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12Hour Race, to be contested at Mount Panorama this weekend. Included in the five-car driver line-up are winners of the Spa 24-Hour Race, the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup, the Formula 3 European Championship, multiple winners of the Bathurst 1000 touring car race, and winners from the past two editions of the Bathurst 12-Hour Race. In arguably the most accomplished field ever assembled for the Bathurst 12-Hour Race, two Mercedes-AMG GT3 squads will contest the elite Pro class, for teams consisting solely of professional racers. UK-based Team Strakka Racing boasts a line-up of international sports car stars featuring AMG factory drivers Maximilian Buhk – the youngest-ever Spa 24-Hour Race winner and youngest FIA GT3 champion – and Maximilian Götz, plus Alvaro Parente, a member of the winning team in this race in 2016. The Team SunEnergy1 Racing team is also loaded with experience, from last year’s Bathurst 12-Hour Race winner and seven-time Supercars champion Jamie Whincup to European-based GT racers Tristan Vautier and Raffaele Marciello. Team owner and fourth driver Kenny Habul finished third in the 12 Hours of Sebring race in a Mercedes-AMG GT3.
Preparing for just his second-ever GT race, four-time Bathurst 1000 champion Whincup reflected on the arduous nature of 12-hour racing. “That was beginner’s luck,” he laughed, when asked about last year’s race. “The biggest challenge is the mental side of things. If you’re not in the car, you’re trying
to work out how to go quicker or work out what the race is doing. To have the brain on for 12 hours without stopping is pretty draining. But to take such an awesome car to one of the best tracks in the world and put some new tyres on it and see how fast you can go, I’ve got one of the better jobs, without a doubt.”

Playful trio of Subarus A
sk anyone keen on motorsport about WRXs and you are likely to get a very long answer. Just in case you don’t know, Subaru introduced the WRX to
NZ in 1992. Since then they’ve won several World Rally Championships, including three consecutive WRC manufacturer’s titles (1995-1997). During the 19 years they were part of the WRC, and since then they have been continually fine-tuning their unique technologies for their road focussed WRXs. And now the Levorg, which while based on the WRX is regarded as the successor to the Legacy GT wagon. These three with their packages of considerable power and performance, safety and sure-footedness of Subaru’s constant all-wheel-drive certainly show this. Especially so on the winding, hilly country roads where all three were driven. They showed they can, (safely) provide a little seventh heaven for they who may want to relive a little of their lost youth! Of course the STi is the hard-core/total performance package one amongst them and has been very well described as a “serious machine for serious people”. Why? Well its 2.5-litre boxer turbo produces 221kw and 407Nm of torque and there’s little doubt about the sporting heritage of the firm-shifting 6-speed manual, or indeed the DCCD (driver controlled
central differential), that allows you to vary how the AWD apportions the drive. While it’s still rather civilised below 3000rpm, from then on it hits its straps. It sings appropriately as well, while polishing off 0-100kmh in 4.9 seconds. Looks purposeful too, with its slightly changed front and steering-responsive headlights. It sits on19-inch alloys which set off the yellow calipers for the large Brembo brakes. Inside there’s touches of red including the seat belts. While the Premium version has a front view camera, neither of the STi’s have Subaru’s excellent twin camera safety system, which both WRX models and the Levorg have(WRX Premium and the Levorg also have a host of other safety features). The WRX and Levorg also, both have an impressive and punchy 2-litre boxer turbo delivering 197kW and 350Nm right from 2400 to 5200rpm. For WRXs there’s options of a 6-speed manual or SLT auto (CVT), the latter being standard for the Levorgs. Like the STi the WRX is a sedan, with comfortable space for four (five if necessary) and a decent boot that holds 460 litres of stuff. It looks as good as it goes, with its bright red brake calipers beneath the 18” alloys! The mid-sized Levorg sports wagon comes only in one well-dressed and fitted

With our current weather nobody knows when lightning may strike, but to be sure it will have to be extremely quick to strike any of them, particularly so the STi!

out model, costing $57,990. Looks-wise, there is, as you’d expect, a close family relationship, with the other two including the bonnet scoop. It has an electric sunroof and also sits nicely on 18-inch wheels. It’s just 80kg heavier than the WRX. Inside there’s heated leather clad sports seats, dual-zone climate control, touchscreen with navigation and the previously mentioned clever Eyesight system. Luggage-wise, with all seats in place there’s is a very useful 522 litres. Of course it has excellent road-holding, yet a suitably refined ride courtesy of a well-set up suspension, complete with Bilstein shock absorbers as well as reassuring grip and traction from the all-wheel-drive. The test WRX had the same Lineatronic CVT as used in the Levorg. In both, this when left to itself did everything very well, smoothly matching up with the engine’s power delivery and making, if you so wished for an easy, relaxed
drive, but again quickly delivering when asked to. That is even more so when using either the lever or paddles for the sequential shift which allows you to chose your ratio, of which there’s six in both the Intelligent (everyday mode) and Sport, then eight in Sport Plus, when everything becomes rather urgent – like dashing from 0-100kmh in a tad over 6 seconds.

Fit for a princess A
notable Jaguar XJ-S Cabriolet with royal connections will be one of a record number of stunning retro cars from the halcyon heydays of motoring appearing at next month’s London Classic Car Show at ExCeL London (15-18 February 15-18). While many of the 700+ wonderful automotive icons on display will have their own incredible histories, few if any will have better stories to tell than this totally oneoff 150mph Jaguar – a sportscar which was fashioned especially for Diana, Princess of Wales. Dating back to 1983 this famous XJ-SC was not only one of the most photographed cars of its era but was also totally unique, built to the Princess’ own bespoke specification. While the other 5012 cabriolets created in Coventry between 1983 and 1988 were all hedonistic two-seater speedsters, this stately XJ-SC (reg E763KYX) was uniquely fitted with two small rear seats just so the young Princes William and Harry could ride along with their mother and her bodyguard. It is generally accepted that the Princess enjoyed driving her custom-made Jag so much that her protection officer was often relegated to the front passenger seat! Additionally, the V12 powered regal cabriolet features an individually made, and permanently fixed, rear hard top to ensure that the two Princes could not strike their heads on the solid targa roof bar in the event of an accident. Also, unlike any other XJS, the once royal roadster is fitted with personalised leather and Harris Tweed seat trims, chosen by Princess Diana. What’s more the exterior bodywork came with four round headlights similar to those seen on the US export and was finished in British Racing Green to match the Aston Martin that husband Prince Charles had acquired around the same time. The Princess was regularly seen driving this majestic model from 1987 to 1991. Then, when the two Princes outgrew their small rear seats, she sold it to the Jaguar Heritage Trust, an educational charity established to preserve the legacy of Jaguar for the nation, in exchange for a
contribution to one of her own charitable causes. The following year, Diana replaced the British-made XJ-SC with a German-made Mercedes 500SL – a controversial decision which caused quite a commotion at the time as no member of the Royal Family had purchased a foreign car in memory. “The London Classic Car Show is littered with cars boasting their own remarkable histories,” said Bas Bungish, Event Director.
“There are F1 single-seaters raced in period by world champions such as Graham Hill and Michael Schumacher and getaway cars involved in staking out The Great Train Robbery. Princess Diana’s very own Jaguar is another of these evocative exhibits which will certainly conjure up many fond recollections among our visitors who really appreciate nostalgia. “Seeing the two Princes today, it’s hard to remember that they were once a pair of
little boys strapped into those special passenger seats behind their mother. “How time flies!” The tailor-made Jaguar is being exhibited at ExCeL by the XJS Club, one of an unprecedented number of enthusiastic car clubs putting together dedicated displays this year’s expanded London Classic Car Show.
