NFINITI has pulled the covers of its new Q Inspiration Concept car at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Designed to preview a new generation of future INFINITI vehicles, the Q Inspiration Concept proposes how an innovative powertrain, next-level autonomous drive technologies, and a human-centric interior could enrich the experience of drivers in the midsized saloon segment. Ranger does it again! F
or the third year in a row, Ford’s Ranger was the overall bestselling new vehicle in NZ. And of course was also the the best-selling ute, for the fourth consecutive year. So the Ranger, which since its arrival has created a strong reputation for its abilities both on and off-road, clearly appeals to and suits the NZ lifestyle. That no doubt happens through the combination of its tough but civilised looks, grunty, 3.2-litre five-cylinder engine, refined cabin and strong ladder chassis complete with coil front/rear leaf spring suspension. And that it can tow 3500kg. Currently I’m driving an FX4 Ranger costing $65,390. It differs slightly from the latest XLT by the addition of black 18-inch alloys, black coloured leather seating, roof rails, sports bar, rear bumper, side-steps and grille. So let’s have a quick review of how the Ranger appears to so well ticks all the right boxes. In doing this one needs to remember, that despite being used by so many as day-to-day transport, it’s officially a commercial vehicle! I reckon that the FX-4’s black highlights and larger wheels nicely accentuate both its street cred and rugged yet smart looks. The side steps are great for easing into the cabin, where Ford has obviously done lots to make it both car-like and very easy to use. It’s spacious, comfortable, with soft
Roger Hart ROAD TEST
touch materials and is much like being in a quality car, especially with excellent Sync 3 infotainment system. It’s so easy to use with its 8-inch colour screen for the sat-nav, sound system, dualzone climate-air, phone, rear view camera and parking sensors. Plus all functions can be voice-activated. Rear seat-wise there’s very good legroom and space for standard size adults, but two are more comfortable therein for longer drives. The driving position immediately feels just right. Such feeling continues as you start that neat sounding, but rather quiet five-cylinder turbo-diesel. With147kW and peak torque of 470Nm from 1500rpm together with the wellspaced ratios of the co-operative 6-speed auto, the performance is always rewarding! That’s equally so from take-off, open road overtaking, towing and climbing hills. The electrically assisted power steering was very good in all driving conditions. It’s quick, with three turns lock to lock, and adjusts itself to be light and easy to
use at low speeds, then precise at higher speeds. Even when unladen, the open road ride and handling, including through tighter corners are decidedly civilised, and carlike. Of course there’s the occasional jiggle over ruts and bumps to remind you there’s a working chassis set up to cope with loads and rough-stuff below, but the overall refinement is such you can have to remind yourself its a ute you are driving! For carrying stuff the tray length is a decent size and very useful – just think of what you’ve spied on the back of Rangers over the holidays. We noted that a standard wooden pallet fits and modifies to allow three mountain bikes to be carried upright with tailgate (kept in place by tie-downs), slightly ajar. For the rough stuff, where the 237mm of ground clearance is a definite benefit, a turn of the rotary dial takes you from 2WD to 4WD High and Low. Then, when needed, you press another switch to electronically lock the rear diff. While there’s lots of standard safety gear and driver aids you will need to look at the top of the range Wild-trak if you want adaptive cruise, lane departure warning etc. Or perhaps even wait for the Raptor offroad performance version of the Ranger. Ford say it’s coming to NZ. Wonder if there’s any chance of the F-150-based Raptor’s 3.5-litre twin-turbo Ecoboost petrol engine, which puts out 336kW and 692Nm of torque and 10 speed auto, being an option?
FORD RANGER FX4 ■■ Cost: $65,390. Others from $47,940 to $69,640 plus ORCs) ■■ Engine: 3.2-litre direct injection fivecylinder turbo diesel, 147kW and 470Nm from 1500 to 2750rpm ■■ Transmission: Six-speed auto. Selectable all-wheel-drive. Transfer ratio 2.72:1. ■■ Dimensions: Length 5,351mm, wheelbase 3,220mm. ■■ Ground Clearance – Approach/Departure Angles: 237mm and 28/28 degrees respectively. ■■ Turning Circle: 12.4m. ■■ Warranty: 3 Year, 100,000Km. ■■ Safety: Rear view camera/parking sensors; front, side and curtain airbags, traction/stability, hill launch/descent and trailer sway controls. 5-star ANCAP rating.
FINALE The Ranger clearly is an very impressive allrounder. It drives, rides and accommodates people so comfortably, as well as carrying and towing whatever you want for both play and work. And does this so well, both on and off-road, you sometimes forget you are in a ute! Except, perhaps, when its 5.3-metre length challenges some of our local parking spaces.

Beautifully bespoke
T
he Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Bespoke department is an extraordinary collective of designers, engineers and craftspeople, who bring the marque’s discerning and influential patrons’ most ambitious and personal visions to reality. Today, almost every motor car that leaves the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England, is Bespoke. 2017 was the year that Rolls-Royce elevated Bespoke to unprecedented new levels, resulting in one of the most significant years for Bespoke in the 114-year history of the brand. What follows is a snapshot of some of the finest examples of Bespoke design and craftsmanship to be completed by the luxury house over the past 12 months.
Sweptail
Rolls-Royce ‘Sweptail’, the realisation of one customer’s coachbuilt dream. Premiered in 2017, ‘Sweptail’ is a compelling representation of true luxury, taking Bespoke coachbuildpersonalisation to new heights. The result of a collaboration between patron and artisan, Sweptail’s bold design embraces the marque’s heritage as
the world’s leading coachbuilder whilst reaffirming its pinnacle position in Bespoke personalisation. This automotive equivalent of Haute Couture draws on the lineage of 1920s and 1930s Rolls-Royce motor cars. The client’s vision was for a coachbuilt two seater coupé featuring a large panoramic glass roof. The result is a contemporary masterpiece. The grille, milled from solid aluminium, presents a distinct formality. The side profile of Sweptail defines its stately character, whilst the rear taper of the motor car pays homage to the world of racing yachts, shaping a completely new perception of a dramatic Rolls-Royce coupé. The elegant and characterising rear culminates in the registration number 08, milled from ingots of aluminium and hand polished to a mirror finish. ‘Sweptail’ is a personal, Bespoke, motor car like no other.
New Phantom and ‘The Gallery’ – An Art Gallery on Wheels
New Rolls-Royce Phantom was unveiled to global critical acclaim in 2017. At the heart of the motor car’s design aesthetic is The Gallery, a contemporary and luxury re-interpretation of a motor car’s dashboard and instrument panel. An application of glass runs uninterrupted across the fascia providing an unprecedented opportunity to present artwork, within your motor car. The Gallery is an innovation that furthers Rolls-Royce’s unparalleled Bespoke vision
and mastery of materials and craft.
Dawn and Wraith at Porto Cervo
Two unique motor cars were created in honour of the 2017 Rolls-Royce Summer Studio, Porto Cervo, Sardinia. A Bespoke Dawn drophead coupé and a Wraith Black Badge were commissioned to encapsulate the essence of this beguiling island. Dawn adopted a nautical theme, evoking emotions of a languid Mediterranean sojourn. The Porto Cervo motif, encrusted with genuine Sapphires and Mother of Pearl, is embedded into the front facia of the motor car. The navy blue and arctic white hues complement an expanse of teak, including the decking and floor. The Porto Cervo Wraith playfully emulates Sardinia’s night time ambience. A two-tone Diamond Black exterior is contrasted with gloss and matt paint applications, while black woven leather door panniers infer Wraith Black Badge’s dark and complex character, under the night sky.
Spirit of Calligraphy Ghost
A special one-off commission unveiled in Dubai in 2017, the Bespoke ‘Spirit of Calligraphy’ Ghost draws its design inspiration from the ancient art of Arabic calligraphy. Words are harmoniously moulded into shapes, creating a unique effect where texts and images become one. Sir Henry Royce’s resonant words “Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it”, in their Arabic form are shaped into Rolls-Royce’s flying mascot, the Spirit of Ecstasy. The calligraphy motif, created by renowned artist Khaled Al Saai, features as a silver inlay on the centre panel and as embroidery on the rear centre seat, amidst an eye-catching array of Turchese, Black and Arctic White leathers.
Elegance
Commissioned for an individual collector, the Ghost Elegance raised the bar of Bespoke by becoming the
first motor car to be finished in a paint infused with diamonds. Named Diamond Stardust, the unique paint incorporates 1000 diamonds crushed to form a very fine powder, giving the finished panels unmatched lustre and sparkle. The flanks of the motor car are highlighted with Mugello Red and Black twin coachlines, reflected inside with black leather seats and accents in Mugello Red, carried through stitching on the doors and piping on the seats. The detailed fascia of smooth open-pore Tudor Oak veneer is also complemented with a Mugello Red single stitch along the top of the dashboard, and finished with a Bespoke clock.
Dawn in Fuxia
In 2017, US collector Michael Fux was presented with his tenth Bespoke model from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Following a visit to Pebble Beach in 2016, where he collected a cluster of eyecatching fuchsia petals, he challenged the Bespoke team at Goodwood with a commission to bring a striking new colour to Dawn. Subsequently unveiled during The Quail automotive gathering in California, the vibrant Dawn in Fuxia represents the addition of another unique hue to the Rolls-Royce Colour Collection, and is reserved exclusively for Mr. Fux to use.
Dawn B50 for Hotel Byblos
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Hotel Byblos in Saint-Tropez in 2017, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars revealed the Dawn B50, a highly Bespoke and unique motor car inspired by the warmth and vibrancy of the Côte d’Azur. Commissioned by the Hotel Byblos as the automotive Jewel of Saint-Tropez, the Dawn B50 exudes two dominant exterior colours. The lustrous combination was developed exclusively to celebrate the hotel’s anniversary, along with bespoke door treadplates and a unique hand-painted coachline on each side bearing the B50 logo. The sophisticated interior takes inspiration from the intense Mediterranean sun, with vibrant tangerine tones that accentuate the dashboard and echo the stitching across the seat upholstery and floor mats.

Taking the battle to Tesla
F
isker has launched its Emotion electric luxury saloon at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week – and there’s a vegan option. The long-awaited Tesla rival, with eyecatching looks and dramatic butterfly doors, has a non-animal interior available for those who don’t want the premium leather interior of the show car. And it’s not just a pretty face. The Fisker offers cutting-edge EV technologies, most notably a 640km range and a top speed of 260km/h – although both
won’t be achievable at the same time. The Fisker Emotion is expected to be on sale in 2020 and to cost $US129,900. Size and performance-wise, the four-wheel-drive Emotion has plenty in common with Elon Musk’s four-door Tesla Model S, but the Fisker has a lot of carbon fibre and aluminium in its makeup so should be lighter than the popular American saloon that has become the benchmark for electric cars. In a separate CES display, Fisker is showing solid-state battery technology which it claims will be able to put a usable
range into an EV in just one minute. This tech, stated for release in 2020, could lift the Emotion’s single-charge range above 800km. Available in four- or five-seat formats, the Emotion has the same four upwardopening butterfly doors first revealed in the concept car in November 2016, which can be opened conventionally via flushfitting external handles, or remotely by smartphone. The Fisker Emotion also has level-four autonomy capability – which means the car can take complete control at all times
The Hyundai SUV Family
– courtesy of five LiDAR (Light Imaging Detecting And Ranging) sensors, the data of which can be processed by the Emotion’s software to provide real-time object classification and speed up the car’s responses. Inside, three screens will bombard the driver with information. They include a curved dash-top infotainment screen, an iPad-style device below in the centre console, and a third screen where the conventional dials would normally be. Production in the US will begin in 2019.
