D-Max simple but effective A
fter stepping down from testing the monstrous Dodge Ram, the new Isuzu D-Max LS was more eye-opening than
expected. The Dodge is everything that we know and love about America – excessive. They have options purely because they can, not because you need them. So it was nice to move into something that was more in line with New Zealand’s requirements. Like all great ideas, the best ones are simple but very effective. The Isuzu D-Max range is available in 6 platforms. 3 of which are 4WD only, and the other 3 are available with selectable 2WD & 4WD. Double-cab models are available in LS, LX and LS-T spec. Single space-cab is available in LS and LS Chassis, and the single cab is available in LX Chassis. Both of the chassis models come with a custom aluminium flat deck as opposed to the standard ute deck. The range starts with the LX Automatic 2WD at $39,890 and with 11 variants to choose from; it goes all the way up to the LS-T Automatic 4WD starting at $61,990. Every model available comes with the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel, in-line
4-cylinder, DOHC, 16-valve Isuzu 4JJ1-TC Hi-Power diesel engine. They produce 130kw @ 3600 rpm and 430 Nm of torque between 2000 > 2200 rpm. All models are available in 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. For the models that come with selectable 2WD & 4WD, you have the latest Terrain Command system which allows you to switch on the fly from 4H-2WD at speeds up to 100km/h. Every model is built on a fulllength, heavy-duty truck chassis, and comes with front independent high ride coil springs, with gas shock absorbers, upper and lower wishbones and stabiliser bar. The rear has an alloy-steel over slung long-span leaf spring with gas shock absorbers. And for the two flat deck chassis models, the leaf springs and shocks are upgraded with heavier duty parts. The changes still keep the iconic look of the Isuzu D-max, while keeping it modern looking. On the outside, there is an allnew front bumper and grille, new headlights and bonnet. So in my mind, it looks the way it always looked: great.

NZ gets iconic GT T
he 2018 Maserati GranTurismo, the latest iteration of what is the epitome of the legendary Italian car maker’s grand touring sports car, has arrived in New Zealand with a host of refinements and improvements to maintain and extend its unique and exclusive reputation. “The Pininfarina-designed GranTurismo is a historically important, branddefining model for Maserati,” says Glen Sealey, Chief Operating Officer of Maserati Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. “This luxurious four-seater sports coupé was conceived as an ultra-modern interpretation of Maserati’s very first production grand tourer, the elegant Maserati A6 1500 of 1947. Over the years, the GranTurismo has evolved into one of the most iconic Maserati cars ever built, thanks to its uncompromised GT character. In essence, the GranTurismo is the ultimate expression of what grand touring means to Maserati, making the GranTurismo a true benchmark for all the cars that claim, but rarely achieve, the real substance of a true grand touring car.” This character is perfectly expressed by a uniquely compelling combination – bold yet elegant design; the exhilarating, inspirational performance of a naturally aspirated, Ferrari-built V8 engine; and the hand-crafted comfort that can only be offered by four individual
seats upholstered in Poltrona Frau leather, which is so special and of such a high quality it has its own patent. The GranTurismo, together with its GranCabrio sibling, is assembled at the historic Maserati plant in Modena, following the highest manufacturing and quality control standards in the world. More than 37,000 GranTurismo and GranCabrio models have been sold globally since 2007. The GranTurismo range has been streamlined for 2018 and two well-defined versions are now offered, the Sport and MC. The Sport and MC share the same powertrain but suspension trim and equipment,
along with personalisation packages, ensure they retain their own distinct characters. The MC – for Maserati Corse – takes on an important ambassadorial role for the entire Maserati range, representing the company’s long and illustrious racing heritage. Replacing the previous MC Stradale, it offers a wide array of features already proven in other
Maserati models. They include the five selectable operating modes. The naturally aspirated V8 unit is handassembled by Ferrari in Maranello and weighs only 175kg. The 4.7-litre engine features a wet sump and – exclusive to Maserati – a cross-plane crankshaft. This provides unrivalled throttle response, free-revving characteristics and a thrilling Maserati signature sound that has been voted the most sexy sound to ever come from a car.

Ferrari’s latest benchmark
T
he Ferrari 488 Pista, which will be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, is the successor to Ferrari’s V8-engined special series – the 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale – which have received critical acclaim for their performance and undiluted handling. The Ferrari 488 Pista marks a significant step forward from the previous special series in terms of both sporty dynamics and for the level of technological carry-over from racing. The name is, in fact, a direct homage to Ferrari’s unparalleled heritage in motor sports. The car’s development evolved directly from the company’s involvement in the FIA World Endurance Championship – where it has won five Manufacturers’ titles in the GTE class in the six years since the series’ inception, taking 29 out of 50 races – and 25 years’ experience in running the Ferrari Challenge one-make series. The Ferrari 488 Pista’s extensive weight saving solutions, along with engine, vehicle dynamics and aerodynamic developments all derive from Ferrari’s racing cars: the 488 GTE and the 488 Challenge. The result is a car with an uncompromising mission: to offer track-like performance on and off the road, even when in the hands of non-professional drivers. Compared to the 488 GTB, the new model weighs an impressive 90 kg less (1280 kg dry) which, when combined with the largest ever increase in engine power
for a special series car (+50 cv), results in a new benchmark for Ferrari’s V8 sports cars. Its engine is the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history and is an extreme evolution of the turbo unit that has won the overall International Engine of the Year award titles in both 2016 and 2017. It punches out 720 cv with the highest specific output of in its class (185 cv/l)
and is now lighter too, thanks to solutions adopted from the 488 Challenge, including Inconel exhaust manifolds and lightweight crankshaft and flywheel, but also thanks to additional features, such as titanium con rods and carbon-fibre intake plenums. The 488 Challenge also supplies the turbos with integrated rev sensors along with the design of the air intake line which has been moved from the flanks to the rear
spoiler area to ensure a cleaner flow of air. Torque is higher than the 488 GTB at all engine speeds, delivering a feeling of consistently smooth, powerful acceleration with even faster turbo response times despite the increase in power. The engine sound is unique and unmistakably Ferrari, as such a special car warrants. Both the sound quality and the intensity are higher than the 488 GTB in all gears and at all engine speeds in proportion with the progressive increase in power. The Ferrari 488 Pista makes full use of Ferrari’s motor-sports experience for maximum aerodynamic performance even on the road. Among the racing solutions adopted is the front F1-inspired S-Duct and the design of the front diffusers which feature a ramp angle that was optimised for the 488 GTE to create strong suction for increased downforce. The suspension set-up is completed by new tyres developed specifically for the car by Michelin. The design of the Ferrari 488 Pista is focused on functional aerodynamic concepts while the cockpit is pared back in keeping with its very sporty vocation. The racing livery colour scheme is an integral part of the design of the car and the way it dives into the S-Duct underscores the berlinetta’s compact yet imposing forms. Contrasting edging on the aerodynamic elements on the bumpers and flanks add structure to the design.
For the first time striking design, seamless connectivity, intuitive driving and exceptional safety have come together perfectly in a bold new SUV To explore the many features and experience it for yourself at Christchurch Mitsubishi on 03 379 0588 to book a test drive.

Muscle cars head our way T
here are Ford people, there are Holden people and there are also Chrysler people. Neville Croy is one of the latter; he like his dad before him is a true Chrysler man. He and fellow enthusiastic members of the Chrysler RT 6 Pack Owners’ Club will be in town this weekend. The club is dedicated to the fabulous Chrysler Valiant Charger muscle cars introduced by Chrysler Australia in 1971. A short-wheelbase two-door coupe based on the Australian Chrysler Valiant sedan, it continued in production right up until 1978. The cars made a name for themselves on the race track in the hands of drivers like Timaru’s Leo Leonard, who in the 1970s broke lap records on all major circuits in this country driving his E49 Charger. Neville Croy and his friends will have their Chargers on display this Sunday between 10.30am and noon in the West Street car park opposite the Ashburton Library. It will be a wonderful opportunity to see some legendary muscle cars. Left – Many motor racing fans from around these parts will have fond memories of watching Leo Leonard burning up the tracks in his E49 Charger.

How Siegfried got its name
W
arwick Protheroe gave his Austin Big Seven its name. At the time Warwick owned the car the comedy spy spoof Get Smart was a very popular TV show which featured Maxwell Smart and his arch enemy Siegfried. Warwick thought and still thinks the name is intriguing, hence he christened the Austin. He is delighted subsequent owners have retained the name.
Bernard Egan MOTORING
A very good choice. Warwick’s first Austin brings back memories for this writer, who after seeing a cousin’s little Austin has always been fascinated with them. That memory prompted a conversation at school with Warwick about his car and consequently a great friendship. After that we made several trips in Warwick’s delightful little car, but one in particular remains in the memory. On a Saturday evening we went to see the stock cars racing at Ruapuna. We had a fun trip – which included the obligatory hamburger – and there was some great racing. But the thing which this writer has not forgotten all these years on was an announcement. The weather changed and it became a very wet night, making for some thrilling action on the track and causing the commentator in formal BBC manner to announce “the rain is really pouring down now!” From behind us in the stand a quickwitted chap gave a retort which amused us greatly at the time and has done ever since. At the top of his voice he responded to
the announcement by yelling out “it would look very (or a word to that effect) funny if it was going up!” No doubt there are countless other stories about Austins and no doubt seeing the cars in town brought back memories for many people. Everyone who saw them are glad the Austins came to Ashburton. Hopefully they won’t leave it too long until they come back again.
The Big Seven
I
t’s often said that said the little Austin Sevens did for English motoring what the Model T Ford had done for motoring in the USA. It was one of the most popular cars ever produced for the British market, and sold well abroad. Not surprisingly some models are referred to as Baby Austins, but as the result of continued development changes occurred during a production period covering 17 years which ended in 1939. As Sevens evolved body length increased and along with changes to engines and ancillary equipment the cars became heavier. So while its heritage is immediately obvious, being later models Big Sevens have quite a few differences to their younger siblings.
