Perfect timing for an Equinox

T

he most popular Sport Utility Vehicle in the General Motors new vehicle portfolio, the Equinox was launched a few months ago. Sold in more than 170 markets around the world including North America, Asia and the Middle East, the Holden Equinox will be the newest model as part of the brand’s ongoing rejuvenation which will see the launch of 24 new models between 2016-2020. The new Equinox debuted with a range of petrol powered derivatives, followed by diesel variants recently. The arrival of the impressive featurerich model signals an opportunity for Holden to take a leadership position in the mid-size SUV segment. Available engines include a 1.6-litre diesel and a 1.5-litre petrol, but the undoubted star of the show is a powerful and incredibly responsive 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine which generates 186kW of power and 350Nm of torque – more than 60kW more powerful than its nearest competitor. The three entry models feature twowheel drive, while all-wheel drive is standard on the two LTZ and the two higher specification LTZ-V models. “We have been evaluating a petrol LT two-wheel drive here in New Zealand over recent months and it’s been incredibly well received by everyone who has driven it,” said Managing Director of Holden New

Zealand, Kristian Aquilina. “It’s powerful, it’s responsive, it has excellent all-round visibility and feedback from our staff is unanimous in their praise of the new model.” As would be expected from a vehicle

competing in this class, safety systems feature prominently across the entire range, as do creature comforts and leading edge technology. Systems include a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, rear park

assist and camera while higher specification models benefit from 19” alloys, LED headlamps and tail lamps, rain-sensing wipers, wireless phone charging, front and rear seat heating topped off with a Bose® premium audio system.

Cocoon yourself inside the whisper quiet cabin of the Holden Equinox. Four embedded microphones detect engine noise and produce counteracting soundwaves through your audio system. If that all sounds pretty hi-tech, well, it is. And it’s just one of the fancy features you’ll discover onboard the new Equinox. There’s also a hands-free tailgate, panoramic dual sunroof and ventilated seats. But the only way to appreciate all this tech is to get behind the wheel, so see your Holden Dealer today. holden.co.nz/equinox

Revved up for Suzuka T

he Honda Endurance Racing team is getting ready for the Suzuka 8 Hours, which on Sunday (29 July) plays host to the grand finale of the FIM Endurance World Championship. The Honda team is heading into the final round third in the overall standings, after a successful season with the CBR1000RR Fireblade SP2. Yonny Hernandez will join Honda’s endurance specialists Sébastien Gimbert and Erwan Nigon, as he heads to the Japanese track for the first time in the absence of the teams’ third rider Gregory LeBlanc, who is missing the race due to injury.

The Honda Endurance Racing squad will be on track alongside a super-competitive field, with 64 teams in total, including their usual EWC rivals and a host of specialist Japanese outfits all taking part in the eight-hour race. Battling the heat and extreme conditions at the 5.821km Honda-owned circuit, the trio will be looking to end the 2017/2018 season in style and claim third place in the FIM Endurance World Championship standings. The Suzuka 8 Hours is set to start at 11.30am Japanese Standard Time on Sunday July 29. To keep up to date with all the team news follow @HondaRacingCBR on Twitter.

I am really looking forward to Suzuka. Of course for the team it’s a shame that Greg won’t be there to finish the season and I will make sure to do the best I can for them. I am looking forward to learning the circuit and riding the Fireblade again, I enjoyed being with the team at the Bol d’Or, so it will be nice to be reunited with the team again. The conditions will be tough in Suzuka but I am looking forward to the challenge and can’t wait to get started. - Yonny Hernandez

Vauxhalls back in vogue N

ot everyone has owned four Vauxhalls. Tom Farrell has. The first three, a Wyvern and two Velox models which Tom owned in the 1960s, followed one after the other. Both the Wyvern and first Velox were 1953 models, the third car was built in 1956. Tom grew up on the West Coast and trained as a builder. He was working on the Waitaki Hydro projects when he owned the first three cars. “They were good solid cars and never did me any harm”. There were some body styling changes between the first two cars and the third one. Tom says there was a noticeable difference in performance between the 4-cylinder Wyvern and the 6-cylinder powered Veloxes. Each model has a three speed column change manual gearbox. Tom and Linda went on their honeymoon in one of those cars, travelling to various destinations, including Ashburton. With the arrival of their family they needed a bigger vehicle, so the third Vauxhall was replaced with a Holden station wagon. Little did they know Tom’s working life driving trucks and heavy machinery would ultimately bring them here to live in Ashburton. And when they sold the third Vauxhall, they were not thinking there would be a fourth one in their lives many years later. Well to be precise there have been two more, with the best parts of each combined to build the superb 1956 Velox which they have just finished restoring. The restoration process, which began six years ago, cranked up properly after Tom retired. Having been brought up on a farm and being around and liking machinery Tom was able – with much appreciated help and advice from others – to do much of the work himself. The car has now been on the road for two months and during that time the Farrells have clocked up quite a few miles of very pleasant motoring, during which the car has never missed a beat. Vauxhalls of that era were often used for official purposes and by the Police and company representatives. Tom does re-

Bernard Egan MOTORING

call another use for the roomy Vauxhall. He says during his hunting days three or four deer could be loaded on board! These days not so many Vauxhalls are seen and the 1956 model is one of the rarest. Tom and Linda are members of the Vauxhall Owners Club, which happens to be staging its National Rally in Grey-

mouth over Labour Weekend. The Farrells are looking forward to being there in the Vauxhall. But given the car is newly back on the road and it’s a while since they last drove a similar car all the way over the Alps, Tom says they are planning a practice run beforehand. Joining other Vauxhall enthusiasts in the region where they came from is a re-

ally fitting destination for their first major expedition in their car. There has been quite a gap in between the Farrells’ first three Vauxhalls and their fourth one, but over the years they’ve always had good memories of those first three cars. Their newly restored car has rekindled and is more than living up to those memories.

Daffodil Rally returns I n a repeat of an event initiated last year the Vintage Car Club Daffodil Rally returns this year, and it’s going to be big! All around the Country 36 Branches of the Club will all be staging events on the same day – Sunday 26 August – to raise funds for the Cancer Society. The Ashburton Branch is staging a Show and Shine at their Maronan Road Clubrooms and invites owners of all makes, models and types of vehicles to take part. And of course spectators are most welcome. The event will kick off at noon and there will be an opportunity to make a gold coin donation.

As well as a people’s choice award there will be prizes for various vehicle categories including British, American, European and Japanese. Food will be available for purchase. It will be a tremendous opportunity to meet enthusiasts see interesting vehicles and contrite to a worthwhile charity.

Support for Kiwi rally

T

he two most renowned world rally commentators are demanding Rally New Zealand return to the World Rally Championship calendar. Autosport rallying editor David Evans joined the voice of rally Colin Clark’s From the Kitchen Table podcast this week to discuss a range of topics at the midway point of the 2018 season including the talk around the future of the WRC calendar. The WRC promoter Oliver Ciesla has hinted at expanding the calendar both in terms of the number of rallies as well as trying to make the championship less European dominant, with Japan and Chile tipped to make the 2019 calendar. Other events, including New Zealand, are pushing for inclusion in 2020. In 2018 there are 14 rallies with all but three (Mexico, Argentina and Australia) in Europe. “For me, we absolutely have to go back to New Zealand because it is part of our heritage. “It was there in 1972 [when the WRC first started],” Evans told Clark. “More than that, for me, New Zealand gave fantastic rallying. “Incredible pictures – ok not so many fans but amazing pictures,” Clark agreed. “You could make a TV show out of that,” Evans added. New Zealand last hosted a round of the WRC in 2012. Organisers pushed hard for inclusion in this year’s championship but were knocked back despite putting together a strong bid. At the time New Zealand was overlooked there was talk from teams that the costs of moving so much equipment that far from their European bases was just too costly to support the initiative.

But Clark and Evans think proposed events simply need to come up with a little extra money to cover the costs of getting the factory teams to their events – around $1 million per event, which might not be unachievable. “[Ciesla’s] talked for a couple of years now about the calendar and his desire for perhaps 16 rounds and he has talked about this very easy to understand eight rounds down the centre in Europe [and the proposed East African Safari rally], four rounds down through the Americas and four rounds down through South-East Asia,” Clark explained. “A lot of us thought the teams wouldn’t buy into it but he seems to have come up with a formula where the teams are partly funded to go to these farther-away events and it is coming together. “No-one is going to invest in something they don’t believe in. “They now believe the World Rally Championship is a vehicle for them that is worth investing in.” Evans likes what Ciesla is hoping to achieve with the championship and feels there is a good mix of expansion while also protecting the championship’s history. “There was this great fear that we will follow Formula 1 and that we could ditch the Italian Grand Prix to go to Azerbaijan but we seem to have maintained an understanding that we need our heritage,” Evans explained. “We need Monte [Carlo]; we need GB [Great Britain]; we need Finland and they understand that and we are getting this mix.” The 2019 calendar will be unveiled in the next couple of months.

“For me, we absolutely have to go back to New Zealand because it is part of our heritage.”

SUV with supercar grunt

T

he Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is proof that a ‘less is more’ approach doesn’t always hold true, especially in the automotive world. The new track-focused Jeep is the most powerful V8 SUV you can buy in New Zealand, surpassing the best from Audi, Bentley, BMW, Land Rover, Porsche and even the Lamborghini Urus ‘super SUV’. Yet it goes about doing so in a seemingly simple way, by adding more in every area. More displacement; more air; more petrol and a lot more noise. But it’s not all about a thunderous V8. After a week of normal road driving with all the hassle Auckland could throw its way, here are the five things you should know about the SUV performance king.

That engine

The Trackhawk experience is defined by the thumping 6.2-litre supercharged Hemi V8 under the bonnet. With more grunt then most supercars – including the latest McLaren 720S twin-turbo V8 or Lamborghini Aventador S V12 – the Track-

hawk is mind-bendingly fast for a 2.4-tonne five-seat, high-ride SUV. The engine develops 527kW of peak power at 6000rpm and 875Nm of torque at 4800rpm. 0 to 100km/h will take a mere 3.7 seconds, completing a quarter mile in 11.6 seconds and onto an unrestricted top speed of 290km/h. Break the figures down and it’s still on par with some of the most highly regarded sports cars. The Trackhawk produces 219kW per tonne, more than the current Aston Martin DB11 V12. It’s strong, too. Peak power is great, but knowing you can reach those limits over and over again is more impressive in my book. Good thing then that the Trackhawk’s power and drivetrain has been developed and tested to allow customers to experience that performance all day long, literally. Part of the Trackhawk’s testing

scheduling included multiple on-tack 24 hour tests, only stopping for fuel (which must of happened often) and tyres. The full drivetrain was also put under strain at the drag strip, with Jeep claiming prototypes were capable of 2000 repeat launches without failure.

It prefers to send power rearward

Even in its most subdued drive mode, the Trackhawk wants to send the majority of its power to the rear axle. In Auto the front-to-rear torque split is 40/60 and more power will only be sent to the front wheels in Snow (50/50) or Tow (60/40) settings. But where the Trackhawk’s balance is transformed is in its two racier modes. In Sport torque is split 35/65, while shift times are also reduced by 50 per cent and suspension is tightened. In Track mode the split becomes more pronounced at 30/70, and shift times are reduced to 180 milliseconds. The changes can be felt behind the wheel as the rear comes into play, helping to turn the SUV as you roll the throttle in a corner. However, be sure to

have the nose pointing in exactly the right place upon corner exit, or a foot-fill of throttle will leave you with understeer.

The interior

With prices starting at $169,990, the Jeep Trackhawk is priced smack bang in the middle of the luxury SUV market. Luckily the cabin is appointed appropriately for a such a competitive segment. The Trackhawk gains a bespoke steering wheel, embroieded leather seats with heating and cooling functions and carbon fibre trim pieces matched with soft-touch materials. The 7-inch driver display and central 8.4-inch touch screen infotainment screen are modern and helpful, especially when customising drive modes. You can add to the luxury feel with a panoramic sunroof, Premium Metal interior Package or 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, all offered as an option.

Going… Going… Gone?

As fuel prices rise and congestion on our roads continues to increase, the appeal of a 700+hp car with an advertised fuel usage of 16.8-litres per 100km has not wavered. Kiwis love performance cars, V8s especially, and the Trackhawk proves that passion and buying power is still present in 2018. When the model was announced for the New Zealand market earlier this year, Jeep confirmed that 75 Trackhawks would make their way down under. By May, half of our allocation was already accounted for. And now half way through July, the choice for Kiwi buyers has witted even further. At the time of writing, only two Jeep Trackhawks were listed on driven.co.nz, none of which were brand new. In fact, only one new model could be found in dealerships nationwide. This isn’t a big seller for Jeep. But it shows no matter how obscure or ridiculous, there’s always a niche ... even for a muscle SUV.

Ducatisti descend on the Adriatic Riviera

W

DW2018 hits the ground running with all the elements necessary to celebrate its 10th anniversary with flair, exceeding all records and expectations. The big festival that every two years attracts Ducatisti and motorcyclists from all over the world is in full swing at the Marco Simoncelli Misano World Circuit, running from Friday, July 20 to Sunday, July 22. It all started at the harbour in Cattolica, as the Adriatic Riviera began to experience the peaceful invasion of the Ducatisti, which also calls for an off-circuit event in the evening. Friday night a parade of thousands of motorcycles will depart from the circuit and travel to the pier of Rimini for a “rustida” and the Scrambler Beach Party energised by a DJ set from Ringo and Virgin Radio. They arrived on their motorcycles and every other means of transport to reach the Misano circuit on time to be present from the very first day of this incredible event. Visitors started queueing outside the

circuit in the early hours of the morning, waiting for the gates to open at 8 am. The first to enter were three Ducatisti who rode from Greece on their Multistrada motorbikes, rewarded for their enthusiasm and for officially opening WDW2018. The public of WDW2018 is a mix of people coming from all over the world. According to pre-sales data, 60 per cent of the participants are Italian, but the remaining 40 per cent confirm the power and appeal of the Ducati brand all over the world. The Ducatisti come from the USA, Europe, Japan, Australia, Russia, India, but also from Brazil, New Zealand, China and the Philippines. WDW2018 is also bursting with competitions and challenges on the track among Ducati riders. The Scrambler Flat Track Race took place on Friday at the Misano circuit. A hardfought race full of twists, spectacular slides, duels and pursuits that saw the victory of Andrea Dovizioso, who has repeated the performance of WDW 2016, confirming that he is unbeatable in that race.

SEAT Terrific Tarraco

D

ifferent words and different languages. “Stupenda”, “magnifique”, “schön”, “enorme”. But all with the same substance. Ten international followers of SEAT received an exclusive first look at its newest model, the SEAT Tarraco. Coming from the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, the fans had the chance to admire the company’s third SUV up close before its international presentation in September. After receiving an invitation to visit the Martorell facilities, the ten SEAT fans were in for a big surprise. They were told to, “Go on in, take a seat and enjoy” before walking into a dimly lit room: taking turns in pairs, the fans walked into the company’s auditorium where they could only make out a couple of chairs. “Why is it so dark in here? I can’t see anything”, says one of the baffled visitors. “What’s going on here?”, adds the second as he takes his seat. When the dark cover is pulled back for them to discover the surprise, “What an elegant silhouette – it’s stunning”, says one of the fans. “I want it”, exclaims another who has travelled from the UK with her daughter. Tarraco, Latin for Tarragona, is the first SEAT model name chosen by popular vote after more than 146,000 fans participated in the final phase of the #SEATseekingName initiative. The new SEAT Tarraco – a large seven seat SUV – adds to the Spanish carmaker’s biggest ever product offensive and will be unveiled in Tarragona in September.
