New-look Commodore steps up
W
hile emotion and internet chatter surrounded the closure of the Australian car manufacturing plants, the reality of the modern automotive world is that cars designed specifically for smaller regional markets are no longer viable. It’s all about global platforms and economies of scale but scope remains for smart car makers to make significant regional adaptations. The Holden Commodore’s transition from VF II to new ZB is a prime example. The ZB Commodore just launched in New Zealand is built in Germany on the GM E2 global platform and shares its architecture with the latest Opel/Vauxhall Insignia. That means a slightly smaller Commodore and a five-door liftback bodystyle to replace the sedan. The versatile sportwagon line continues and there’s also a high-ride wagon badged as Tourer to widen Commodore’s lifestyle appeal – a spiritual successor to the Adventra. All-new aspects of the ZB are the transverse engine location with a choice of front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission on all petrol models. The new entry level engine is a fourcylinder 2 litre direct injected and turbocharged petrol with modern high-torque characteristics. Holden has had input into the ZB styl-
ing while its engineers have worked since 2012 on local suspension, steering tune, transmission calibrations and electronic controls to meet the demands of Australasian roads. And the V6 engine is the direct result of Holden influence. When the ZB pro-
gramme began, the car wasn’t going to offer more than four cylinders. Holden pushed the V6 argument and North America has also reaped the benefit by getting the V6 version badged as a Buick Regal GS. Exhaust tuning has given the 3.6 litre V6
engine a richer exhaust note that wasn’t evident in late 2016. And Holden says the new exhaust has also improved engine response and 2016 indications of 230kW and 370Nm have been surpassed with 235kW and 381Nm being the official figures. Suspension, steering tune and electronic chassis controls have been refined. The new nine-speed transmission has had its shift timing and refinement polished. There’s 191kW output and 350Nm of torque to motivate a Commodore that’s about 100kg lighter than its predecessor and has the close-ratio benefit of three more gears. The upgraded V6 displays more power when worked harder but the steep early torque peak and lighter weight of the 2.0 litre car makes it as quick in most partthrottle situations. The most evident change in the cabin is the front occupants sit closer together. The measurement is 36mm closer in a car that is also narrower by 36mm to preserve clearance distances from the roofline and pillars. Making this possible is the transverse powertrain location which allows more front footwell space. A roomy, stylish wagon remains a compelling family solution and the new Tourer lends the Commodore a slice of SUV lifestyle appeal but with little of the highriding dynamics compromise attached to most SUVs.

Exciting concept
M
azda Motor Corporation has announced that the Mazda Vision Coupe has won Concept Car of the Year at the 11th Car Design Night in Geneva, Switzerland on March 6. Car Design Night Geneva is held each year to coincide with the Geneva Motor Show and attracts car designers from all over the world. The annual event is hosted by Car Design News, an online and print publication established in 1999 to serve the international automotive design community. Concept Car of the Year is awarded to the concept model that attracts the most votes from a panel of 18 judges, many of whom are current design directors at global automakers. Mazda’s Vision Coupe was also named Most Beautiful Concept Car of the Year in Paris last month, making this the model’s second global design award. “Following on from Paris last month, we are delighted once again to have Vision Coupe recognised with a global design award. “And it’s truly an honour to have this model, which aims to express the absolute essence of Japanese aesthetics, applauded by some of the world’s top car designers,” said Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s Managing Executive Officer in charge of Design and Brand Style. “The essence of this design concept will be evident in the next generation of Mazda

ant to see a whole lot of fabulous Landrovers and Rovers and have a chance to talk with their owners? Well there’s an opportunity to do just that on Sunday, March 25 at the Methven Showgrounds between 10am and mid-afternoon. The owners will be staging this public display during their Landrover 70th anniversary commemoration rally. And of course those who live outside Methven can combine the visit with a drive there on the great scenic roads of the Mid Canterbury foothills.

cars, the first of which is due for launch in 2019.” Revealed in Tokyo in 2017, Vision Coupe is a design vision model for the next generation of Mazda cars. It represents the next phase of KODO– Soul of Motion design, in which the expression of vitality and dynamism has evolved in pursuit of an essential Japanese aesthetic. The concept’s flowing and deceptively simple “one motion” form speaks of elegance and high quality.

On-road sophistication
S
ince the X5’s arrival in 1999 BMW have globally sold more than 5.4 million X model SUVs. With the recent launch of the X2 and X7 later this year, their X range will be numerically sequential from 1 to 7. And of course includes the new, third generation, three model X3 range. They, with their packages of turbo engines, eight-speed autos and excellent Xdrive all-wheel-drive system now closely mirror the X5 in looks, innovation, quality, and driving ability. As well the X3s now have more passenger space (for five) than earlier X5s did. The entry level X3 2.0d starts at $92,850 (+ORCs) and is powered by a 2 litre turbodiesel producing 140kW of power and 400Nm of torque. It’s capable of an 8-second 0-100km/h sprint and has a stated fuel use of 5.7L/100km. It sets the equipment standard (which the other two models add to) with 19-inch alloys, electric tail-gate, sports seats with leather upholstery, active cruise contol, sat-nav, LED lighting and more. Next in the line-up is the 30i as driven. It has a 2 litre, four cylinder turbo-petrol delivering 185kW and 350Nm. It costs $99,850 (+ORCs) and adds 20-inch alloys, steering wheel paddles, heads-up display, park assist etc. The test 30i however had $17,140 worth of various optional extra packages, including adaptive suspension, heated front seats, Harmon Kardon sound system, full glass roof, electrically folding tow-bar etc which brought the cost up to $117,140 (+ ORCs.)
That price is pretty close to the $119,850 (+ORCs) cost of the M40i, the wild child of the trio (0-100kmh in 4.8 seconds), with its 3 litre, twin-turbo straightsix petrol producing 265kw and 500Nm. It has the adaptive, suspension, heated front seats, Harmon Kardon sound system,as well as 21-inch alloys as standard fare. While of course the 30i’s turbo-petrol four hasn’t the absolute grunt (or sound) of the M40i’s straight six, in concert with the eager responses and super smooth changes of the eight-speed ZF auto, it whooshes along in an absolutely quick, effortless manner. That’s even when driving in the Eco Pro driving mode which keeps fuel use and emissions down, which was fine for cruising on the plains. Comfort was chosen for round town driving. Then both Sport or Sport+ (when one really wants some spirited motoring and 0-100km/h 6.3 seconds) were especially good on the winding, hilly sections of the test route. Sport + comes up with sharpest possible steering, engine and auto responses as well as a firmer, but still passengerfriendly ride. This means, irrespective of one’s driving style or which driving mode you choose, that there’s a pretty an ideal set-up. The obviously finely-tuned suspension and dynamics together with the comprehensive array of driver assist technology and eager engine mean its an effortless, comfortable cruiser, one that can, as conditions allow, very safely and very easily maintain impressive average speeds,
BMW X3 XDRIVE Roger Hart ROAD TEST
but then just as easily slot in to day to day family duties. Similarly the luxurious cabin proved a pleasant and very comfortable place to be. Cream leather furnishings and the full glass roof exposed means it has an exceptionally light and airy ambiance, although of course seat covers will be advisable, especially when there’s work clothes, or infantry, involved. The front sports seats initially felt on the firm side, but proved impressively long-distance comfortable, while they in the rear seats commented favourably on space as well as seat comfort, and as well how quiet and smooth the ride was. As expected the dash and controls have a quality look and feel to them, plus they and the i Drive system proved easy to use, and see on the 26cm centre touch-screen. There’s also a long list of equipment and driver aids including the excellent adaptive cruise-control and 360-degree camera. Then there’s plenty of space to load in (and secure with sliding tie-downs) up to 550 litres of luggage via the large, high lifting, powered rear door. No spare wheel though.
■■ Costs: 30i $99,850 - as driven $117,290. (both +ORCs) ■■ Engine: 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder turbopetrol 185kW/350Nm. ■■ Transmission: 8-speed auto and constant all-wheel-drive. ■■ Quoted Overall Economy: 7.6L/100km. ■■ Safety: 5 star NCAP. Lots of driver assistance/alert systems. ■■ Turning Circle: 12.1 metres ■■ Tows: 2400kg braked (has trailer sway control) ■■ Warranty etc: 5 year warranty/road assist, 3 years servicing.
FINALE During 450km driven it was very obvious this new X3 is not just luxurious and stylishly executed, but matches this with very sophisticated, refined driving experience, both about town and especially so on the open road.

New generation Corolla launched
T
he next Corolla hatch, featuring a bolder, more dynamic exterior design and a more rewarding driving experience, has been launched at the Geneva Motor
Show. Badged as an Auris for the European market the next-generation Corolla hatch is built on a new platform that gave designers the freedom to create a visually distinctive and individual look. “The new Corolla hatch will have a fresh and exciting makeover with a heavily European inspired design,” Neeraj Lala, Toyota New Zealand’s General Manager of
Product and New Vehicle Sales said. “It’s going to be a brand-new groundup build, on Toyota’s new global platform, with a more gratifying driving experience.” Longer, wider and featuring a longer wheelbase than the current car, the new Corolla hatch is imbued with a lower stance and more appealing proportions. The TNGA platform features a lower centre of gravity, multi-link rear suspension and a more rigid body shell that contributes to better handling and stability without compromising ride and comfort. A choice of hybrid electric and petrol powertrains are provided for the new
model. This includes the latest version of Toyota’s 1.8-litre hybrid powertrain. Its fuel efficiency will rival the hybrid halo model, Prius, while fulfilling all the requirements customers have come to expect from a Toyota hybrid powertrain – silent, intuitive, responsive and selfsufficient. Corolla hatch’s overall length has been increased by 40mm, all of which has been absorbed within the longer wheelbase. The roof’s peak has been lowered 25mm, while the cowl height is a significant 47mm lower than the current model. The result is a sleeker shape with a more
attractive, lower bonnet, which in turn improves safety by giving the driver a clearer forward view. The surround to the large, trapezoidal lower grille is less pointed and more vertical, resulting in a front overhang that is reduced by 20mm. Rear design is more rounded, strengthening the visual relationship between the front and rear of the vehicle. An increase in rear windscreen rake of 14 degrees combines with the muscular hip adopted above the rear-wheel arch to make the overall appearance more compact, even with a 20mm increase in rear overhang.
Roller with a difference or two
I
n Norway, of all places, we find this; a slightly modified 1974 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. Like a lot of other lovely examples of the breed, it comes depicted in a beautiful deep red, it has a full leather interior, and it’s dripping with chrome and wooden decadence. Speaking of the D word, there’s also a holster in the back for a champagne bottle (or, indeed, any other appropriately sized bottle) as well as a couple of flutes. So fancy. But, practically everything else about this build is violently against your traditional, typical, Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.
Under (and over) the bonnet is a supercharged 462 cubic-inch GM V8. Inside is a full tube frame that cradles the driver and three passengers. Drag-racing Hoosier rubber front and rear is the icing on this Roller’s cake. This, even though power figures aren’t known, is a guaranteed straight-line beast. We’re featuring this Rolls Royce because it’s currently for sale in Norway. It’s priced at 890,000 Krone, which translates to just north of $NZ150,000. Which, when you think about all the time and effort that’s gone into this build – not to mention the fantastic fit and finish, the cost of that engine, and the cost of a donor vehicle – isn’t the worst way to spend 150 grand.

Supercar left in the dust A SUV is not meant to outperform a supercar, but that’s exactly what happened when the new Range Rover Sport SVR took on a fearsome mountain road in
China. Land Rover’s performance SUV, driven by Panasonic Jaguar Racing driver Ho-Pin Tung, has smashed the record for negotiating the 99 corners of the famous Tianmen Road. The standard production Range Rover Sport SVR set a new unofficial record of 9 minutes 51 seconds for the 11.3km ascent at an average speed of 68.8km/h, beating the previous best of 10 minutes 31 seconds – set by a Ferrari 458 Italia supercar in 2016. With 423kW available from its enhanced V8 supercharged engine, the new Range Rover Sport SVR is the fastest ever Land Rover and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 280km/h. The new performance flagship features bold design revisions and increased use of lightweight materials to enhance performance, handling and agility. Coupled with changes to the chassis, the new SVR delivers more dynamic responses without compromising traditional Range Rover comfort. The engineers at SVO focused on controlling pitch under heavy
acceleration and braking, and changes to the damping hardware have improved turnin, mid-corner grip and body control. Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Ho-Pin Tung said: “I am used to the high speeds of racing but this was even more demanding. Maintaining concentration was the biggest challenge as the road twists and turns constantly, with huge drop-offs to the side. “The consequences of getting it wrong would have been really serious so I focused on establishing a rhythm and the Range Rover Sport SVR made this easy – it may be an SUV but it has the performance and agility of a supercar and can take you to places a supercar can only dream of.” The optional exposed carbon fibre bonnet is one of the distinctive innovations introduced by the experts at Special Vehicle Operations and features a pair of large air vents to underline its performance potential. A revised front bumper provides enhanced brake and engine cooling while the 5 litre V8 supercharged engine produces 700Nm of torque. Inside, new lightweight SVR performance seats provide superior support and traditional Range Rover luxury with Windsor leather, an embossed SVR logo and a choice of four colour combinations.
