Classics still in demand
C
lassic Car Auctions held its biggest sale of the year last weekend at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show where 130 out of 161 cars classics on offer were sold, resulting in an impressive 81 per cent sales rate. The total value of the cars sold reached £2.1 million over the twoday sale at the NEC in Birmingham on March 24 and 25. While there was frenetic bidding for many cars, notable lots included the highest price paid at the auction for a restored 1972 Alfa Montreal which sold above its upper estimate for £59,400. It was followed by another Montreal project car from the same year which sold for £28,600 to an internet bid from New Zealand, again above its upper estimate. Meanwhile, a stunning a stunning 1948 Jaguar 3.5-litre Mark IV Drophead Coupé stole the limelight on day two of the sale when it sold for more than twice its upper estimate for £40,700, to an on-line bidder in the Czech Republic. Proving that good things come in small packages was a 1964 Morris Mini Cooper 970 S in a very rare original shade of blue which sold for £40,700, almost £10,000 above its upper estimate. Other cars which caught the attention of bidders and selling above upper estimate
while a 1995 BMW E38 750iL previously owned by rocker Francis Rossi OBE fetched £7150 and a 1985 Bentley Turbo R, once the property of global superstar Sir Elton John CBE, sold for £10,120. Gary Dunne, sales manager, Classic Car Auctions, said: “This is a fantastic start to the year for CCA and we’re absolutely delighted with the results, as well as the huge turn-out in the auction hall.” “There was a lot of variety in the cars on offer and demand proved high across the board, and from across the globe. “The dust may have only just settled on this sale but we’re straight onto the next, so I encourage any prospective vendors to come forward early to avoid disappointment.”
included a rare 1975 Vauxhall Firenza 2.3 ‘Droopsnoot’ which sold for £18,150, and a 1975 Jensen Interceptor SIII 7.2-litre which was hammered away for £56,100. Fast Ford fever was high with a 1987 Ford Capri 280 Brooklands Turbo Technics selling above its upper estimate at £26,400, while other modern classics also achieved strong results, including a 1973 Datsun 240Z sold for £10,000 above its lower
estimate for £24,750 and a 1990 Porsche 911 (964) Carrera Targa 4 which sold well above its upper estimate for £36,850. Celebrity cars were also not to be outdone. A 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL once owned by music legend Sir Barry Gibb sold above its upper estimate for £17,600,

Game changer
L
exus has stretched its RX mid-sized luxury SUV to fit a third row of seats for greater versatility to meet the demands of growing
families. “This is the first time we have had a full-sized, seven seat family SUV in this price range,” said Paul Carroll, the Senior General Manager of Lexus New Zealand. “The benefits of seven-seats for family life are substantial. For larger families taking one vehicle to sports events, recitals and restaurants is a game-changer.” “Taking young children and their friends anywhere is less hassle when you have the room to do it in a seven seater,” he said. “The RX L is the epitome of a luxury vehicle for families that require more than five seats.” The third-row seat will provide two more seats in two variants, the hybrid RX 450hL Limited and the V6 petrol RX 350L Limited. With the body being extended 110 mm at the rear, the RX 350L and RX 450hL retain the model’s bold styling and sleek interior features. A steeper tailgate window ensures good headroom and substantial luggage space behind the power folding third row seat, which has a 50:50 split for greater versatility.
Children can be accommodated in the third row which has 3-zone climate control and is set slightly lower than the second row seat to provide more leg room. When folded flat the third row seat provides a flat extended luggage area, accessed through a hands-free powered tailgate by waving a hand over the Lexus badge, provided the key is carried on the person. Access to the third row is made easy with a one touch lever that folds and slides the second row seat forward. A smaller power tilt and slide moon roof in the seven seat models replaces the panoramic moon roof used in the five-seat models. The five-seat RX will continue to be available in six variants with a choice of hybrid and 3.5 litre V6 powertrains in standard, F Sport and Limited specifications. Revisions to the 2018 five seat RX see the alloy wheels on all models now having the black centre caps with a chrome Lexus logo previously only fitted to the F Sport model. The 3.5 litre V6 engine used in the RX 350 provides 221 kW and 370 Nm. The engine is mated to a smooth eight-speed sequential –shift intelligent automatic transmission.

Covering all the options W
hoa! What a quite amazing, and for some at times puzzling array of SUV type vehicles that are now available. And with sizes, power, style and pricing to meet most peoples wants, needs or aspirations. Holden’s new medium sized Equinox range covers a lot of options with its nine model line-up – right from the $35,990 LS to the flagship $56,990 (diesel is $59,990) all-wheel-drive LTZ-V in which a four-up road trip to Dunedin and thereabouts took place. Of course, under the bonnet of the petrol LTZ-V (as is for the LT and LTZ and the new Commodore) there’s a strongly performing, 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder twinscroll turbo-petrol engine that delivers not only 188kW, but 353Nm of torque from 2500-4500rpm. Now that’s impressive, especially so when you factor in the excellent ninespeed (yes, nine) auto with its ever-quick and seamless changes that it’s paired with. The combination meant, despite being loaded up with people and gear, that overtaking was quickly and safely dealt with, and the many hills effortlessly climbed. The Equinox was also was quick away from standing starts, and if you wish and can reach 100kmh in a little over 7 seconds. While the stated overall fuel use is 8.4L/100km, that indicated for our trip was a still decent 9.2L/100km. Although our Equinox is based on the latest generation of North American models, Holden’s Australian engineers were much involved in its development and
modifications to suit driving conditions in our part of the world. The result – stiffer springing, front and rear sway bars, different shock absorbers and much more direct, electric power steering. That combination shows in the manner it turns into and then flows through corners, irrespective of the road surface, where it always remained nicely composed, yet passenger-wise comfortable. The Equinox proved easy to drive and park around the city as well, although the turning circle is a little wider than you expect. The quite plush, contemporary cabin proved to be convenient and spacious with plenty of room and comfort for four, their luggage and results of some retail therapy. As well the well-shaped and padded black leather seats (the front with both heating and ventilation – the rears with heating) proved themselves long distance comfortable. Quiet at cruise to, because of the active noise-cancelling technology whose four microphones in the roof lining detect wind/road/engine noise and starts a frequency generator which transmits counteracting sound waves through the speakers and sub-woofer. Of course being top of the range, the LTZ-V has lots of goodies including an 8-inch touchscreen with dedicated satnav as well as Bluetooth, Apple Car-play/ Android Auto connectivity and lots of USB and other charge points. There’s keyless entry, push button and remote start, dual zone climate air front/ rear, park assist/camera, rain-sensing

wipers, wireless phone charging, a Bose sound system, a huge two-panel panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel and more. Lots of luggage was easily stacked in via the hands-free, high lifting rear door, then for long loads there’s a one-touch action to fold the rear seats. A space-saver spare sits below the luggage space floor. We did encounter some decidedly greasy road conditions and slips where the clever on demand all-wheel drive system was both reassuring and definitely useful. There’s also hill-descent control, which brings to mind the other safety gear on board. As well as a full complement of airbags and aforementioned driver assist stuff, there’s Holden’s latest safety technology package which includes autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, forward collision alert with head-up warning, as well as blind spot and rear cross traffic alerts. However active cruise control is not included. There’s also a driver’s seat alert, which uses a variety of sensors and cameras then vibrates the seat as a warning (this feels

Can’t beat the original
T
he BMW M5 is the original model that started the high performance super saloon genre. Now an all-new sixth generation of the BMW M5 Saloonhas been launched, equipped with an enhanced V8 engine, a new M-specific, all-wheel drive system known as M xDrive and performance statistics that surpass all previous incarnations. Key to this heightened level of performance is the introduction of M xDrive and its adaptability thanks to a central control module and the variety of different dynamic modes that can be selected. When first started, the car is in four-wheel-drive mode with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) switched on. But it comes with various driving
dynamics modes, up to a track-friendly pure rear-wheel drive without DSC. Power comes from the latest 4.4-litre V8 engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology. It delivers a maximum torque of 750Nm, accelerating the new M5 from zero to 62mph in just 3.4 seconds, making it the fastest M5 yet. Power is transferred to the road via a new eightspeed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. All of this performance is wrapped in a design that adheres to the form follows function mantra of all BMWs. The front design serves to splice the oncoming air in the most aerodynamic fashion while at the same time providing the breathing and cooling requirements for a 600hp engine and its braking system, and the downforce required
$150m meet-up T
his is the moment 300 petrolheads lined up a supercar collection worth more than £75million ($NZ150 million) at a top-secret meet. Members of the Supercar Driver club took their exotic vehicles to the Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground, Leicestershire, for their first meeting of the season. The front row totalled more than £20 million of cars which included a Ferrari FXX and Aston Martin Vulcan, each worth more than £2million. Other front row cars included two Koenigsegg Ageras, worth £1.2 million, two £750,000 Ferrari F50s, a Ferrari Enzo worth around £2 million, a £1million Bugatti Veyron, a £1 million Pagani Zonda F and an Aston Martin One-77 which could fetch as much as £2.5 million. One row of vehicles celebrated the best of British engineering, featuring three Eagle E-Types, worth £500,000 each, a TVR Speed 12, Jaguar XJ220, and a Noble M600. The third row contained more expensive supercars including a £1.3 million Porsche 918 Spyder, the only Farboud GT in the world which is priceless, a Ferrari F12tdf, which cost around £350,000. In total, more than 300 supercars arrived at the event, with Supercar Driver club organisers estimating the total value of the fleet was in excess of £75million. The meeting raised around £22,000 for the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
of a high performance saloon. Thanks to various tuning enhancements, the latest BMW M5’s 4.4-litre V8 M TwinPower Turbo is more powerful than ever. It develops a maximum torque of 750Nm from just 1,800rpm through to 5,600rpm – a 70Nm increase over the previous M5. The engine characteristics can be changed by pushing the Drive Performance from the basic setting ‘Efficient’ to ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport Plus’, both of which provide a faster turbo response. BMW’s M engineers have developed new turbochargers and a higher injection pressure of up to 350bar. This allows shorter injection times and better fuel atomisation, making it both faster and more efficient. Improved lubrication and cooling systems include an oil pan with a small
front silencer and an indirect charge air cooler, which is more powerful than its predecessor, despite its smaller size. The oil supply, which is operated by a variable pump, is designed for racing track applications and allows high G acceleration with no risk of oil starvation. The exhaust manifolds have also been modified to ensure the best transfer of exhaust gas energy into the two turbochargers. Through the use of a resonator between the two rear silencers, the M engineers have also reduced the car’s mass. The exhaust note is flap-controlled and is influenced by the different driving modes to enhance the driving experience further. An M Sound Control button allows the driver to reduce noise levels at the push of a button.
