Hilux gets attitude injection

oyota Hilux will ramp up its attitude with the introduction of the SR5 Cruiser variant, which sits above the SR5 and replaces the current SR5 Limited. It has a bold new look with its black hexagonal upper grille, revised front bumper design and heavily revised LED fog lights. “The new look adds an aggresive attitude to the long-standing Hilux attributes of being tough and unbreakable,” said Neeraj Lala, Toyota New Zealand’s General Manager of new vehicle sales and product. “SR5 Cruiser makes a bold statement with a more robust exterior look, first class safety, enhanced interior styling and the built-in strength that makes Hilux the first choice for customers who want a ute that looks good but can perform in a demanding environment.” The Hilux SR5 Cruiser will be available as a double cab in 2WD PreRunner and 4WD configurations, a sixspeed automatic transmission. 18-inch gloss metallic black alloy wheels with 265/60 tyres make the Hilux SR5 Cruiser stand out and are complemented by black door mirrors, door handles, and a new black rear bumper. SR5 Cruiser body graphics are also included. The interior carries on the bold new look with black perforated, leather-accented upholstery used throughout, with the colour is continued on into the pillars and roof lining. Drivers and front passengers get added comfort through the addition of front seat heaters. The SR5 Cruiser has a new instrument cluster with a revised tachometer and speedometer offset with piano black ornamentation to replace the silver highlights of the outgoing SR5 Limited. The 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel motor, with 130 kW and 450 Nm of torque from 1600rpm-2400rpm, popowers the SR5 Cruiser.

The best of both worlds P olestar, the new electric performance brand, has introduced the Polestar 1 to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. The European debut follows its global media reveal in Shanghai, China, in late 2017. “This is the public launch of the new Polestar 1, and our new electric performance brand. “Electromobility is the main focus of today’s automotive industry, and Polestar is at the centre of this development, introducing world-class electrified cars and groundbreaking, customer-focused services and offers,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar. “To date, we have received interest from over 6000 potential customers wanting the Polestar 1 – a number which began gathering momentum from the moment the car was revealed. “With our current plans to produce 500 cars per year, it’s possible that we have exceeded our production potential in these early stages. This positive reception to Polestar 1 really encourages us that our ‘Pure, Progressive, Performance’ brand proposition resonates very well with customers.” Polestar will open pre-orders for the Polestar 1 on March 13 with a request to the list of potential customers to pay a fully-refundable deposit of €2500. Pre-orders will open in the six initial launch markets announced in January, including China, the United States, Sweden, Germany, Norway and the Nether-

lands. An additional 12 new markets for Polestar 1 have been added and will open for pre-orders simultaneously, including Switzerland, the UK, Belgium, Finland, France, Poland, Austria, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Portugal and Canada. “We will open pre-ordering of the Polestar 1 to eighteen markets which covers around 95 per cent of the geographical interest from potential Polestar 1 customers,” continued Thomas Ingenlath. “The deposit acts as a placeholder in the Polestar 1 queue and we are excited to see how the initial response translates into pre-orders.” The Polestar consumer experience is based on a new subscription model, where customers will be able to subscribe to their Polestar car for two or three years. Linked to a host of

connected and on-demand benefits like pick-up and delivery servicing, the nodeposit, all-inclusive subscription model has been designed to take the traditional hassle out of vehicle ownership with one monthly fee that includes insurance and maintenance, and allows the customer to focus on the enjoyment of driving. Customers will also be able to purchase the Polestar 1 outright if desired. The Geneva Motor Show also marks the start of a world tour for the Polestar 1. Other regional reveal events are planned in China, the United States and elsewhere in Europe.

The Polestar 1 is an Electric Performance Hybrid 2+2 GT coupé which produces 600 horsepower and 1000 Nm of torque, as well as 150km of pure electric driving range – the longest of any hybrid car in the world. The Electric Performance Hybrid powertrain features an internal combustion engine powering the front wheels, while a double electric rear axle drive system powers the rear wheels from a total of 34 kWh of battery power. In combination, the Polestar 1 is an electric vehicle with the benefits of an internal combustion engine to supplement the electric drive over long distances when required.

t was a wonderful way to spend a morning. It started out with a chance to meet members of the Veteran Car Club who were in Ashburton during their Mid-Summer Adventure. Chris and Rosemary Dyer from Rangiora said the Club had ventured into Mid Canterbury before and were keen to come back because of our great roads and scenery. To classify for Veteran status vehicles must have been built prior to 1918, which of course means that by the end of this year the youngest Veteran vehicle will be 100 years old. Many of the vehicles on the Mid-Summer Adventure were much older than that, including the Stephens family Ford Model T which is thought to be Bernard Egan one of the first thousand MOTORING examples built. It like all the Veterans on the rally are being carefully preserved and looked after by their owners. It was wonderful to talk with the enthusiasts who brought these very special vehicles to town and great to hear these machines running. And if that wasn’t enough of a treat there was another in store after the Veterans departed. Members of the Chrysler R/T 6 Pack Owners Club had their vehicles and some similar Chryslers on display in town. Like the Veteran Club they had decided to base a weekend run here and it was obvious they liked what they were able to see and do. From a later era then the cars seen earlier they were a reminder of Chrysler’s very successful foray in muscle car production in the 1970s. The Veterans and the Chryslers could hardly have been more different but they also had one very special thing in common. Like the Veterans the Chryslers are quite understandably the pride and joy of their owners. Two great car displays. One great way to spend a morning.

A fascinating fact

his year Landrover enthusiasts are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the iconic vehicle they are proud of. The Association of Rover Car Clubs are planning a very special event based over several days later this month in Methven to celebrate Landrover’s birthday. It will incorporate Rover cars as well. Some rather rare and special examples will be here. The club has an interesting and full programme of events planned during which we’ll see some fabulous vehicle around Mid Canterbury. There will also be an opportunity for the public to see the vehicles at a display in the Methven Showgrounds on Sunday March 25.

t the time this is being written the writer is also preparing notes for a talk to one of our local Rotary Clubs. Something to look forward. For the writer! Hopefully the Rotarians will have similar thoughts afterwards. This writer is anticipating the audience may include his former history teacher Brian Edmondston. Brian made history fun. Hence the writer thought it would be good to include a bit of motoring history so he referred back to a story about the car which transported the Archduke Franz Fer-

dinand around Sarajevo back in 1914. He and his wife were assassinated in the car and that led to the outbreak of World War One. The car was a Graf and Stift. Double checking this to make certain correct historical facts will be presented in the presence of a highly respected history teacher led to an amazing and rather ironic discovery. The number plate of that famous car which is now on display in restored condition, in a German museum was A111118. Those numbers could also signify a famous event and date, the Armistice which ended the horrific confrontation took effect on 11-11-18!
