X2 sets a new benchmark
S
portiness coupled with a polarising appearance – based on this formula, the new BMW X2 has inspired above all a young and modern target group following its premiere in March 2018. With its extroverted design, the BMW X2 interprets the character of a premium SAC (Sports Activity Coupes) in an entirely new way within the compact segment. The top-of-the-range version of the BMW X2 is the M Performance automobile. The wide BMW double kidney grille of new BMW X2 M35i features a surround in Cerium Grey for visual differentiation at first glance. Likewise, the surrounds of the air cooling inlets and the exterior mirror caps are finished in Cerium Grey. The rear of the X2 M35i is characterised by the standard M rear spoiler and two specially designed exhaust tailpipes, also in Cerium Grey. The new BMW X2 M35i featuring a 225 kW (306 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine definitely sets new benchmarks above the previous versions. As the letter M in the type designation clearly signals, the new X2 M35i possesses the impressive dynamic handling qualities of an M Performance automobile. Behind this is yet again the BMW M GmbH, whose racing know-how flows into the development of all components. The 2-litre TwinPower Turbo engine concealed under an M Performance cover is
the very first M Performance four-cylinder engine and at the same time BMW’s most powerful version. It delivers a maximum power output of 225 kW (306 hp). Maximum torque is an extremely power-
ful 450 Newton metres. To ensure that this sheer power is securely transferred to the tarmac, the X2 M35i comes as standard with intelligent four-wheel drive technology xDrive in conjunction with the 8-speed Steptronic
transmission including Launch Control. The automatic transmission features specific M Performance tuning. Equipped in this way, the BMW X2 M35i is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

Form and function
F
ollowing on from the launches of both the Colorado SportsCat and Chevrolet Silverado range, HSV this week confirmed pricing for its exciting new Chevrolet Camaro 2SS. Synonymous with higher performance, HSV is re-engineering and re-manufacturing the legendary Chevrolet Camaro for Australia and New Zealand markets; the first manufacturer to do so with full volume compliance. The driving force behind the Camaro 2SS is Chevrolet’s 6.2L Generation V LT1 Direct Injection V8 engine, mated to a smooth shifting, 8-speed, paddle-shift automatic transmission and generating up to 339kW of power and a lofty 617Nm of torque. Featuring Variable Valve Timing and Active Fuel Management, the LT1 offers efficiency when you want it and an abundance of power when you need it. The vehicle’s Independent Rear Suspension, with twin-tube shock absorbers, provides a dynamic connection to the road with stopping power delivered by light-weight and track-tested Brembo
front & rear performance brakes with fixed calipers. High Intensity Discharge headlamps deliver signature front-end appeal while stylish 20”, 5-split-spoke alloys (8.5” front & 9.5” rear) are wrapped in 245/40ZR20 (front) and 275/35ZR20 (rear) Goodyear Eagle tyres. A rear stanchion spoiler and dual-outlet exhaust with bright tips add aggression at the tail. The premium interior of the Camaro 2SS delivers the perfect marriage of form and function. It starts with power-adjustable heated and ventilated leather-trimmed front sports bucket seats for optimum comfort and support, complemented by a heated, leather-wrapped, flat-bottom sports-profile steering wheel for ultimate grip. Ther’s dual zone automatic climate control, a 9-speaker Bose premium audio and 24 colour interior spectrum lighting enhancing the interior ambience while the Driver Mode Control blends exhilaration with innovation, offering four distinctive drive modes – Tour, Sport, Snow/Ice and Track – that deliver four
radically unique driving experiences. Driver conveniences extend to remote start, a customisable 8” digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging and a universal garage door opener, while a power sunroof also comes standard. Said HSV’s Managing Director, Tim Jackson, about the imminent launch of the Chevrolet Camaro, “This project has been over three years in the making and involved millions of dollars of investment in product development, testing and validation. “We set out with the goal of retaining the integrity of the left-hand-drive vehicle through the adoption of extensive engineering, development, and manufacturing processes. “We are proud to say we believe we have achieved our goal”. In speaking about HSV’s accomplishment, Jackson said, “I can’t think of another organisation, that is not one of the large OE manufacturers, that has challenged itself to conduct full volume compliance on a passenger vehicle. “The interest and push we have had from customers and the GM faithful to

exus is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its high-performance F badged models with limited editions of the V8 engined GS F and RC F which will arrive here in October. Just 500 of these special edition models have been manufactured globally and Lexus New Zealand have been fortunate to secure 5 RC F coupes and 10 GS F sports sedans for the local market. “These models are the purest expression of Lexus performance,” said Paul Carroll, the Senior General Manager of Lexus New Zealand. “These limited anniversary edition vehicles celebrate Lexus’ commitment to performance through the F brand, and are built for drivers to immerse themselves in pure driving pleasure and satisfying performance.” Exclusive to the anniversary models, a matte paint finish in Nebula Grey accentuates the powerful lines and sculpted surfaces
while providing a striking contrast with the gloss black finish of the unique 19-inch alloy wheels and blue Brembo brake callipers. It is the first use of a matte paint finish on a Lexus since the LFA supercar. Few engines can match a naturally aspirated V8 when it comes to delivering seamless power from idle to redline. The 5.0 litre V8 in the GS F and RC F is engineered for low weight and high strength with forged connecting rods and titanium valves that allow a 7,300-rpm redline. Large slotted brake discs provide the stopping power required in a sports car of this calibre. Lexus meticulously tested the torque vectoring differential system at the Nürburgring and Japan’s Fuji Speedway to fine-tune its operation and co-operation with the vehicle dynamic integrated management (VDIM) system featuring a SPORT mode and an EXPERT setting for circuit driving.
bring this vehicle to market has been nothing short of exceptional”. Recommended retail pricing of the Chevrolet Camaro 2SS has been confirmed at $NZ104,990 with the company reporting that the first model year will be limited to just 550 units in total, including 38 for New Zealand. Said Jackson, “Our business model has always been to provide a niche offering with strong connection and support to our customers and, with just 550 available in our first model year, we are excited to get the product in customers’ hands”. The manufacture of the Chevrolet Camaro will commence at HSV’s new production facility in Clayton South, Victoria, this month. Recommended Retail Pricing ($NZ) Chevrolet Camaro 2SS (automatic): $104,990 NB: Model pricing quoted is Recommended Retail Pricing and includes GST but excludes Dealer Delivery and Statutory Charges. Corolla rolling on
L
eading up to its launch, Toyota had said this all-new and 12thgeneration Corolla would have both “soul and personality”. Its launch drive definitely dispelled any thoughts of “yeah right” about this, with a 300km or so drive from Palmerston North, into and about many secondary roads of Waiarapa-Bush, neatly bypassing Tui’s Mangatainoka brewery. Many of the roads driven are used for the Targa Rally. Those roads are ideal driving conditions for these lower, wider and longer Corollas, sitting on their new stronger TNGA platforms, complete with independent rear suspension to show how well they handled. They do this without compromising their ride and comfort. There’s five new models, three petrols and two hybrids, all with a sharper, nicely proportioned, distinctive look including wrap around LED headlights, looks which certainly reflect their newfound, dynamic performance capabilities. The range starts with 2.0-litre petrol GX, with a Driveaway price of $29,990. It has an 8-inch touchscreen display with sat-nav, 4.2-inch multi-info display, air-conditioning, rear privacy glass, 16inch alloys and a six-speaker audio system. The GX hybrid ($32,990) in addition to its Synergy Drive system gains dual-zone climate control, key-less smart entry and push button start, the latter three components which the petrol SX grade, ($32,490)
also gets, as well as wireless phone charging, LED fog lamps, paddle shifters, leather steering wheel and other additions. At the top of the range, the ZRs (petrol $37,490, hybrid $38,490) are equipped with a large colour head-up display, 18-inch alloys, heated leather and suede accented sports front seats, 8-speaker premium audio system, 7-inch colour multi-information display, ambient illumination, automatic dimming rearview mirror and high-grade bi-LED headlights. All models have a really impressive level of advanced safety technology with their array of active driver assistance and passive protection features, courtesy of the appropriately named Toyota Safety Sense. This includes an active pre-crash safety system that incorporates autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection (day and night) and cyclist detection (day only), all-speed dynamic radar cruise with indicator linked control, automatic high beam, lane tracing assist which includes lane departure alert with steering assist, lane centering and sway warning, and off-road sign assist. There’s other standard safety features including the reversing camera with static guidelines, seven air bags, drive start control, secondary collision brake and active cornering assist. Blind spot monitoring is added to the SX and ZR variants. The classy-looking dash’s 8-inch multimedia touchscreen for audio controls,
Roger Hart ROAD TEST
sat-nav etc proved user friendly. There’s also a voice command system using Siri or Google Assistant to perform simple tasks like sending a text message or checking the weather at your destination. The shapely front seats, with their lower hip points, proved both supportive, comfortable and easy to get in and out of. The three petrol cars use a new, direct injection, reduced emission, 2.0-litre engine. It produces 21 per cent more power (125 kW), 15 per cent more torque (200 Nm) than the previous 1.8-litre engine, but it is more economical with a stated combined fuel consumption of 6.0L/100 kms. As well they have a new dynamic shift CVT featuring a gear and belt drive system. This uses the gear drive, rather than the belt when accelerating away from a standing start. Both the SX and ZR petrols have paddle shift, while all petrol variants can access by lever the 10-speed, sequential manual shift mode. In keeping with Toyota’s commend-
able ongoing commitment to lower their overall CO2 emissions, the new Corolla hybrids come with the latest self-charging petrol-hybrid electric power train as used by the Prius, so their 1.8-litre petrol engine, which now uses 91 octane fuel, has a combined system output of 90 kW, and a stated, combined fuel consumption of 4.2 L/100 kms. Having this latest Synergy Drive system certainly complements the car’s dynamic capability, and showed during our drive that it is likely to provide owners with a desirable balance between fuel economy, low emissions and performance. The Corolla, since 1969, has been the biggest selling model in NZ with a total of over 263,000 sold, of which some 155,000 are still on the road. This new, more premium, more stylish range with its excellent array of state of the art active and passive safety standards is likely to ensure this remarkable achievement continues. As Neeraj Lala, Toyota’s General Manager of New Vehicle Sales says,“Customers crave novelty, change and excitement, but at the core want security, solidity and consistency. “Corolla DNA has remained the same for 50 years, while evolving in terms of the latest technology and styling”. NB: “Driveaway pricing” includes WOF, registration, a full tank of fuel, the Toyota Care Service Advantage package, floor mats, and the three years or 100,000 kms warranty.

PICTURE PERFECT T
he launch of a new Land Rover Discovery designed for the New Zealand market will see one of the lowest ever price points on its most popular model according to its distributors. With over 25 years of pedigree on and off our roads, Land Rover Discovery is one of New Zealand’s most enduring and iconic SUVs. Land Rover NZ general manager Steve Kenchington says at under $100,000, the entry level Discovery Pioneer model has one of the lowest price points ever for the seven seat SUV.
“From the exterior, the Pioneer model will look very similar to the other models in the existing Discovery range. “Under the hood it features a 3L V6 twinturbo diesel engine which produces 190kW at 3750rpm and 600Nm torque between 2250 and 1750rpm. “The Pioneer can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 8.1 seconds and offers a fuel economy of up to 6.8 litres/100km. “A 3500kg towing capacity (trailer with brakes), puts it up there with any other Land Rover and this model will also come equipped with a range of class leading safety
features, including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning and Trailer Stability Assist,” he says. Kenchington says the streamlined new model is expected to appeal to a new market looking for cost efficiencies as well as the unparalleled performance expected from the brand. A new campaign featuring National Geographic NZ young photographer of the year Talman Madsen saw the Discovery Pioneer driven the length of New Zealand to help capture a portfolio of the country’s most iconic scenery.
GIXXERS back on track
L
ast season’s inaugural Suzuki GIXXER Cup series was an overwhelming success and it’s set to be even better in 2018-19. The GIXXER Cup competition was first created late last year and quickly matured and developed into one of the most exciting and closely-followed of racing classes to run during the 2017-18 road-race season. Now, after some thoughtful consideration, that inaugural competition has undergone a couple of tweaks, to make it even more popular for the upcoming 201819 season. The GIXXER Cup competition will again be incorporated within the popular three-round Suzuki Series that kicks off in December and the five-round 2019 New Zealand Superbike Championships that are set to follow shortly afterwards, but slightly modified now to not handicap under 16-year-old riders who are deemed too young to race on the public streets of Whanganui’s world-famous Cemetery Circuit. With this in mind, Suzuki has made the decision to change the rules regarding points allocation for the GIXXER Cup. There will now be a total of seven rounds that count towards prize money and points for the GIXXER Cup series and the Cemetery Circuit event on Boxing Day will now be treated as a stand-alone event for the GIXXER Cup riders, with its own separate prize pool and trophy. Therefore, there will no longer be an
option to discard a round of the series and so all seven rounds – at purpose-build circuits at Taupo (riders visiting there twice), Feilding (twice), Christchurch, Timaru and North Waikato – will be counted for points in the 2018-19 GIXXER Cup. The riders’ contingency fund for the GIXXER Cup has also now been boosted to a whopping $10,000, offering additional incentive for aspiring young racers, indi-
viduals who perhaps may not previously have considered tackling the sport. All riders in the GIXXER Cup class are on identical Suzuki GSX150F bikes. Entry is restricted to riders aged between 14 and 21 years and, with virtually no modifications allowed to the bikes, the racing is always guaranteed to be close and exciting. Ready to race at just $4995, these air-
cooled, four-stroke, single-cylinder bikes have been prepared in the Suzuki workshop by Wellington’s national superbike champion Sloan Frost. Fitted with Dunlop AL14 tyres and a host of other hand-crafted race parts, the purchaser also has his or her GSX150F bike delivered complete with a rear race stand. The class of racing is inexpensive, competitive and the perfect way for young riders to learn the sport and acquire true race craft. And, with second-hand Suzuki GSX150F bikes now available for as little as $3995, the number of riders on the start line is likely to increase. Some of last season’s GIXXER Cup stars, such as Pukekohe’s Thomas Newton, Paeroa’s Blake Ross, Greymouth’s Clark Fountain, Taupiri’s Zak Fuller, Timaru’s Harry Parker, Invercargill’s Michael Wilson or Hamilton’s Jesse Stroud – son of Suzuki’s nine-time former national superbike champion Andrew Stroud – to name just a few, will be out on New Zealand’s race tracks again this summer. They will either be enhancing their reputations in the GIXXER Cup class or making their first forays into some of the bigger bike categories. With the tagline “Growing Future Champions”, the 2018-19 GIXXER Cup series could be considered a nursery ground for New Zealand’s next national and international motorcycling stars, heralding the beginnings of a potentially great, longterm racing career.

Bertie rides again W
hile the latest generation of spectacular ‘new era’ WRC cars will be wowing the huge crowds as they race through the legendary Welsh forests at unsurpassed speeds, next month’s Dayinsure Wales Rally GB (October 4-7) isn’t just for the title chasing big guns. Unlike most other major sporting series, the FIA World Rally Championship allows plucky private entrants to compete alongside their more illustrious peers. Few fit the ‘plucky privateer’ tag better than Hereford’s Bob Beales in his ‘Bertie’ Beetle. Manufactured back in 1958, the ever-popular VW Bug is celebrating its 60th birthday by contesting the WRGB National Rally which shadows the main WRC event. Living up to its Colorado beetle inspired orange and black livery, Bertie has a notably colourful history. In its early life, the venerable icon was owned by a taxi company, which somehow managed to roll it! The car was then rally-prepared by the legendary Bill Bengry in the early sixties before Beales acquired it a few years later. Bob competed extensively in rallies, autotests and even autocross before putting the charismatic air-cooled car into storage.
In recent years, though, Bertie has enjoyed a new lease of life competing in many historic events and now is gearing up for a fourth consecutive start alongside the world’s rally elite in Wales. “We won our class in 2015 and 2016 but
sadly were forced to retire from a big class lead last year when a gearchange coupling snapped. “That big disappointment means we are really looking forward to making amends next month,” vows the big-hearted Beales
who is hoping to mark his Beetle’s big milestone birthday in style. “Bertie was 60 a few months ago and it’s going to be a wonderful way to celebrate in Wales. This is the highlight on the UK rallying calendar and it’s great to be on the same event as all those world championship cars and drivers.” That said, Beales admits it’s not all plain sailing out on the speed tests in the stunning Welsh forests. “Being at the back, the gravel stages can be a bit rough after all those fourwheel-drive cars have been ripping up the tracks … but we cope!” he grins. “I’d like to get some new bits for the rear suspension but it’s money and, even though we do have a number of very kind sponsors who help with some of the bills, being a pensioner, it’s difficult fund everything.” Indeed, the ever-enthusiastic Beales turns 70 in January and has been in motor sport for most of his life. He started rallying aged just 17 and, even before that, helped with marshalling on events. Now he and Bertie are becoming fans’ favourites on the illustrious World Championship stage. “We do put a lot of smiles on faces,” confirms Beales. “I do try to give all those waving in the crowds a toot but only when I have enough hands available to hit the horn button!”
