It’s a small world Bernard Egan MOTORING

F

rom time to time stories bring back memories. A story published back in June was illustrated with a picture of a magnificent 1929 Nash, which had been restored by then local gentleman Hans van Lith. Several readers, including Anna Reith, made contact with us to say they remember Hans van Lith. Anna and her late husband Alan Reith had business dealings with Hans van Lith and enjoyed getting to know him and his wife Ria. In his memoirs Alan referred to Hans as a brilliant engineer who could always solve difficult issues and often accurately calculate measurements in his head. Likewise, Ian Mackenzie says Hans was a great designer, who developed an irrigation computer program which was way ahead of its time. After retiring, the van Liths moved to Tauranga, and just as he had done while living here Hans got involved in various community activities. The 1929 Nash was sold to a German buyer and Hans continued to indulge his passion for restoring cars, especially MGs. By taking up painting Hans found a new outlet for his creativity which saw him become a recognised artist and recipient of several prestigious art awards. Hans’ use of various mediums was an indication of his talent and his wide range of subjects included his beloved MGs. He produced at least two memorable murals on Tauranga buildings. Sadly Hans passed away in November 2011, after a very full and interesting life which included experiencing the German occupation of his native Holland. Ria says Hans’ arrival in Christchurch in 1954 was a happy accident.

Hans van Lith intended to go to Canada in the 1950s, but somehow ended up in Ashburton.

Because he liked ice skating, Hans had intended to go to Canada, but somehow ended up here. Anna Reith has kindly shared Han’s obituary, published in the Bay of Plenty Times, which interestingly features a photograph taken here in Ashburton by a Guardian photographer many years ago, and which we have reproduced. The obituary mentioned Hans will be remembered by many people. Which of course is so right, both up

there and down here. And this of course proves it’s good when stories bring back memories and really great when people like Anna Reith share them with us. When preparing these words there was a wonderful opportunity to speak with Annette Wakefield – one of Hans and Ria van Lith’s daughters – who lives in Tauranga. Annette was quite intrigued when we made contact because just recently her

Hans van Lith was besotted with the legendary MG marque, and was at this MG rally just days before his death in 2011.

sister Miriam, who lives in Australia, also heard memories of their dad in an unexpected place. Miriam was a member of a group – which included local farmers Ian and Diana Mackenzie – who took a horse trek in Vanuatu. They were delighted to make the connection and recall Hans, who had designed irrigation schemes for the Mackenzies. It’s a small world!

American as pumpkin pie S

ometimes a name keeps coming up, you may not have heard or thought of it for a while and then out of the blue it seems to pop up repeatedly. This occurred recently when the name of the car which is as American as pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving Day kept coming to the fore. Cadillac. Elvis liked Cadillacs, so did other celebrities, and there were at least one hundred pink Cadillacs in the late Aretha Franklin’s funeral procession in Detroit. This brought to mind a thought. Where did the perhaps somewhat unusual name originate? Was it like many other famous marques including Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge derived from the name of the person who started the now famous brand? The answer is no. The company wasn’t started by a Mr Cadillac, rather it was formed from the remnants of the Henry Ford Company and named after a person with that name. After a dispute between Henry Ford and his investors, Ford left the company along with several of his key business partners in March 1902. Ford’s financial backers William

Bernard Egan MOTORING

Murphy and Lemuel Bowen called in engineer Henry M. Leland to appraise the plant and equipment in preparation for liquidating the company’s assets. Instead, Leland persuaded the pair to continue manufacturing automobiles, and a new company called the Cadillac Automobile Company was established. Pretty good decision! The company was named after French explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, who had founded Detroit in 1701. Ironically Cadillac, which had its origins in a Henry Ford company, is now owned by General Motors. Interestingly this research threw up another Cadillac fact and let’s face it there are plenty of those. Purely by coincidence this investigation into the origins of the name occurred almost 116 years to the day since the Cadillac Company was established.

Super Stelvio

T

he all-new Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio was named SUV of the Year 2018 by German car magazine Auto Zeitung. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio outperformed the most powerful SUV models of 11 other brands by virtue of its driving dynamics and handling properties. The Quadrifoglio is the performance flagship of the Stelvio range and is powered by a 510 horsepower 2.9 V6 bi-turbo engine that can accelerate to 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 283km/h. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio will complete the three-strong lineup, bringing world-class performance, state-of-the-art technologies, seductive

Italian flair and an exhilarating driving experience to the premium mid-size SUV segment. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio also recently claimed the title of world’s fastest production SUV, setting a new benchmark lap time at Germany’s legendary Nürburgring: another achievement in the racing tradition of the Quadrifoglio and in over a century of Alfa Romeo history. Brought to life by Alfa Romeo craftsmen at Cassino in Italy, the Stelvio has been on sale in Australia since March 20 and is testament to the brand’s perfect balance of engineering and emotion – creating a premium mid-size SUV for driving enthusiasts that stands out in one of the largest and fastest growing segments locally.

BEST IN CLASS

T

he Concours of Elegance is celebrating another weekend of motoring royalty, welcoming well over 10,000 motoring enthusiasts and around 1000 incredible cars into the spectacular gardens of Hampton Court Palace. Best in Show was awarded to the Mercedes-Benz S-Type Barker ‘Boat Tail’, as voted for by the owners of the Main Concours cars. More than sixty of the world’s rarest cars were parked in the spectacular Fountain Gardens of Hampton Court Palace vying for the honour of Best in Show, and the incredible Pullman Trophy. The quality of the cars this year was so impressive that to even be invited to attend was a triumph. Among them was the Porsche 917K driven by Steve McQueen during filming for Le Mans and the last four-cylinder Ferrari built; the 500 TRC. The Best in Show-winning MercedesBenz S-Type Barker ‘Boat Tail’ is based on

Mercedes S-Type Boat Tail the 1927 Mercedes S-Type; one of the most powerful road-going automobiles in the world in period, developed as the perfect road-going, race capable car. Originally owned by racing enthusiast and British Racing Drivers’ Club co-founder Earl Howe, this ‘Boat Tail’ car was fitted with a revolutionary body which incorporated a lightweight aerodynamic shell with unique aircraft-inspired aluminium side pods crafted by English coachbuilders Barker. Over the years, the majority of Earl Howe’s unique specifications were all but lost, until a recent sympathetic restoration brought it back to its former glory. For the first time at the Concours of Elegance, awards were also given out for different classes and eras. Once more judged by the owners of the Main Concours cars, the winners included a fresh factory-restored Lamborghini Miura P400 S in the post-1970s class and a Maserati 300S driven to victory by Sir

Stirling Moss in the 1940s/’50s class. The Royal Automobile Club also presented Katie Forrest with the Spirit of Motoring Award for her passion and flair in taking part in the Concours in her 1912 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost ‘Taj Mahal’, affectionately nicknamed ‘Nellie’. Outside of the main Concours of Elegance cars, nearly 1000 other models parked at Hampton Court Palace for the weekend, including a collection of Future Classics which crowned by the car that eventually won this class; the one-off Rolls-Royce Sweptail. Also taking part in the feature were the one-of-seven Aston Martin V12 Vantage V600 and McLaren Senna #001. Meanwhile, the Harry’s Garage display brought together the world’s fastest supersaloons, including the Ferrari-engined Lancia Thema 8.32, Jaguar XE SV PROJECT 8 and Aston Martin Rapide AMR. Also on display were some of the finest

CX-3 makeover N

ew Mazda CX-3 defies its dimensions, packing even more style, value and power into the small SUV’s latest update. Releasing in Australia at the end of August, New Mazda CX-3 has seen design, equipment and engine upgrades to enhance its timeless appeal and the elements that make it one of the most popular small SUVs in the segment. On the exterior, a new front grille adopts bold horizontal lines to achieve a more assertive stance, while rear combination lamps on sTouring and Akari models have been refined to give a more premium and precise look. On Maxx Sport and above, gloss black adorns the fog lamp bezels and side pillars, sharpening the detail of the areas around the window and highlighting the flowing, floating roofline. Inside, New Mazda CX-3 has been given a substantial makeover with a revised centre console design accommodating the

examples from the UK’s most prestigious car clubs, as part of the RAC Club Trophy. A panel of expert judges, including HRH Prince Michael of Kent, deemed an Alvis Speed 25 Drophead Coupe to be the best on display. Nearly 80 historic Jaguars were on display, competing for the Jaguar Trophy. A panel of judges overwhelmingly decided the car they would most want to take home, was an impeccable and highly original X120. The very early steel car has only covered 53,000 miles since new. More than 60 Bentleys arrived in the gardens, ranging from the pre-war grand prix cars to some of Bentley’s very latest Continental models. A judging team of Bentley experts carefully assessed each and every model before deciding that the pre-1965 Bentley Trophy be awarded to a stunning S2 Saloon. The post-1965 Trophy went to a 2000 Continental T. newly added Electric Parking Brake (EPB), now standard on all grades. The change from a manual park brake to an electric one has meant the Command Controller has been relocated, moving forward for easier reach. A folding padded lid has also been fitted to the console box, doubling as a comfortable central armrest for driver and front seat passenger. Urethane foam with a high-damping quality has been adopted for the front seat cushions to give greater ride comfort, and seat upholstery has been changed to full leather on the high grade models. Combined with a host of SKYACTIV technology upgrades, including redesigned stepped egg profile combustion chamber, ultra-high piezo injectors, a new coolant control system and Natural Sound Smoother, the new engine boosts power to 85kW from 77kW at 4000rpm, while torque remains a high 270Nm delivered between 1600 and 2600rpm.

Flying Kawasaki

J

ames Hillier, riding for the JG Speedfit Kawasaki team, achieved two podium finishes at this years Isle of Man TT – a third place in the RST Superbike TT and another third in race two of the Supersport TT, despite challenging points throughout practice and race week. The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy is one of the most infamous road races on the calendar – a 37.73 mile circuit with 265 corners and speeds of up to 190mph. The fastest riders will lap the course in under 17 minutes with average speeds of around 134mph. It’s a dangerous event which requires the highest quality protection. James Hillier is no stranger to the TT. Beginning his career at the mountain course in 2008, he has achieved 11 podiums and a first place finish in the 2013 lightweight TT. He knows the risks too, after a huge moment at one of the most dangerous corners on the circuit, Ballagarey, had him sideways at 150mph. He chooses AGV and Dainese for this very reason: for the very best in protective headwear and clothing. This year James wore an updated version of his custom AGV Pista GP R helmet, sporting an all new design and this years updated features. “It was a last minute change, and whilst the general design remains the same, Starline – infamous for their distinct and strong designs – implemented the JH feature on the top which was something different and really stands out. “I knew it was going to be good. “I really love the helmet – the paint scheme and colours work really well with the bike and sponsors we have. “I’m pleased with it.” “It’s quite a privilege for me to represent a brand like AGV and wear their iconic logo – they choose me to represent them and I do that to the best of my ability. “Their products are proven with a great track record used by the best riders in the world.

“There is certainly no doubt in my mind whether to use them or not. “For me, what helps is the consistency – I’ve never had any problems with them and they are worn by some of the best racers in the world. “AGV are one of the best manufacturers making helmets today.” The Pista GP R from AGV is the ultimate helmet for the track. A shell made from 100 per cent carbon

is shaped to reduce interference with the racing suit and paired with the wind tunnel tested “biplano” spoiler, it has excellent aerodynamic performance and stability at high speed. An included hydration system and MotoGP derived metal air vents add to the helmets quality touches, whilst interior stitching avoids sensitive areas for supreme comfort. James completes his choice of race

wear with the riders D-Air race suit from Dainese. The D-Air provides riders with Dainese’s most advanced protection yet, with suits that integrate inflatable zones controlled by computers that monitor a bikers orientation. These zones inflate in the event of a fall to soften impacts to the body and reduce injury, but remain deflated during riding to maintain comfort and manoeuvrability.

T

he brand with the Scorpion badge is introducing the new Abarth 595 range, which embodies the evolution of their most iconic model. Two new colours have been introduced to the range, Adrenaline Green on the 595 Competizione and Trofeo, with Asphalt Grey available on the Turismo. The new Record Monza Active exhaust is introduced as a standard feature on the 595 Competizione and Trofeo, featuring an active valve controlled by a Sport button. When pressed, the Sport button opens the exhaust valve and the engine rumble becomes deeper and bolder. The driver can choose a more composed engine sound or a tougher, sportier – and more traditionally Abarth – roar. Available in a choice of hatchback or convertible, the new 595 range features four versions – 595, 595 Trofeo, 595 Turismo and 595 Competizione. All Abarth 595 models come with a Euro 6D-Temp compliant 1.4 T-Jet engine with power levels ranging from 145hp to 180hp to satisfy all customer needs. With attention to detail and advanced engineering, the 595 is a model capable of expressing the two personalities of the brand – performance and style. Distinctive yet affordable, the 595 is Abarth’s entry-level model and offers all the standard equipment needed to deliver the thrilling driving pleasures typical of the brand with the Scorpion badge.
