A serious driving experience W

hen thinking about adding a more urbane large SUV to the lineup to accompany the existing Trailblazer tough truck, Holden

thought big. The result is the addition of the madein-Tennessee Acadia to its range, and the contrast between what the Americans might consider a “medium-sized crossover for soccer mums” with Holden’s other rugged seven-seat Colorado ute-based large SUV is a stark one. Acadia is smooth in its ride and delivery, petrol-powered, and appears to possess only enough ground clearance to clamber over the average roadside curb. Any sticker hinting of off-road prowess placed on the back window of the Acadia will possibly cause the huntin’ and fishin’ fraternity to soil their undercrackers with laughter. However, if your adventures are more comfort- and convenience-focused, Acadia packs plenty of potential to be a sweet n’ spacious ride to the bach, cafe, school ball, skifield or the office. It’s also arguably the most technically advanced vehicle yet to wear the leonine Holden badge. The Acadia mixes a ZB Commodoresourced V6 engine and nine-speed automatic gearbox with the rest of the adaptive-4wd powertrain (available on three models) taken from the other Buick SUV in Holden showrooms – Equinox. If that sounds like a parts bin special,

rest assured that it gels together well, and delivers a driving experience that is just as refined as that of a V6 Commodore. If you haven’t driven a ZB, you should — it’s one of the most resolved sedan/wagon ranges on the market. So this is more than an SUV; it’s also an alternative to what was once Australia’s favourite car. Acadia’s lead development engineer, Tony Metaxas, hails his new baby as a “new

flagship family car for Holden”. Acadia comes in six forms – three allwheel drive and three front-wheel drive. There’s three specification grades – LT, LTZ, and LTZ-V – and you can buy the frontdrive version of the LT straight off the floor, while front-drive versions of the LTZ and LTZ-V are available to special order only. It’s the pricing that’ll instantly grab the attention of those selling the Mazda CX-9, Toyota Highlander and Hyundai Santa Fe.

That front-drive LT fires a handy first shot at those competitors with its $49,990 sticker. By the time you get the $71,990 LTZ-V AWD model at the top of the Acadia range, Holden NZ will have fired a six-gun salvo across the bows of the large SUV segment. The alpha Acadia model is more than ten grand cheaper than the top Santa Fe, and competes dollar-for-dollar with the Highlander Limited.

errari’s latest mid-engined Special Series V8, the 488 Pista, has been nominated Supercar of the Year by BBC Top Gear Magazine. This brings Ferrari’s tally of BBC TopGear Awards to 16, and complements the 488 GTB which won the same Supercar of the Year award in 2016. When deciding on the Ferrari 488 Pista as the Supercar of the Year, the editors at BBC TopGear were overwhelmingly impressed by the 488 Pista’s playfulness and the ease with which Ferrari’s control systems

allowed the driver to enjoy the full 710hp available from the car’s award-winning twin-turbo V8: “The Pista is a natural-born performer, a fourwheeled peacock wearing white and blue war paint, constantly wanting to be under the spotlight while creating a plume of smoke out of its arches from disintegrated rubber.” The Ferrari 488 Pista’ s 3.9 litre twin-turbo V8 delivers 710hp and was nominated the best engine in the world in the 2018 International Engine of the Year Awards – for the third year running.

A visual birthday treat Bernard Egan MOTORING

F

or me at this time of year some of the lyrics from Simon and Garfunkel’s song The Boxer often come to mind. The words “Now the years are rolling by me, they are rockin’ evenly. I am older than I once was and younger than I’ll be” resonated with me again last Friday and maybe with our motoring sub-editor Steve as well. That’s because we both had a birthday on that day. I’ve had a few more birthdays than Steve. Thanks to family and friends I had a great day, filled with activities which were quite special and I really appreciated all the kind messages received, many via social media. I’m probably not alone in looking back and thinking of things which happened on previous birthdays. Naturally I don’t recall really early ones, nor of course the day I was born in Rakaia, although I do remember Rita my mother saying she only just made it to the cottage hospital in one piece, because I was apparently quite keen to arrive, so to speak, in and have a look at mum and dad’s Buick. Maybe a portent of things to come – an interest in cars. Sometime later mum and dad sold the Buick, the next owner being the late Sir Wilson Whineray. The Buick, which has been beautifully restored, now resides in Australia, owned by members of a local family who now live over the ditch. As far as I can recall cars didn’t feature particularly on any other birthdays until several years later, in fact 50 years ago to the day last Friday, when I took delivery of my first car. A delightful little vale green 1962 Morris Minor 1000 which for some reason acquired the name Mervie. The reason for that name has been lost in the mists of time. Speaking of names, mum and dad had decided if a son joined them and big sister Judith he would be named Anthony. But I arrived on Uncle Bernard’s birthday so was named after him, which is an honour because he was a very good and generous gentleman. His numerous acts of kindness are still remembered by many people, especially in Wellington, more than 30 years after he passed away. Mervie, which was sold new by Drummond and Etheridge, had two previous owners – the Small and Scott families. I still know some of those family members and I often see sisters Alison Cox and Sheryn Saunders, who were the next two owners. Mervie is often mentioned in conversations with Alison and Sheryn. We’ve lost track of Mervie but he’s not forgotten and when I told Tony Adams about this anniversary his response referred to many adventures in Mervie. There certainly were some adventures, and we’ll leave it at that. Well, except to say one memorable adventure – or actually misadventure – which happened 49 years ago involved Roger and Rowena Hart.

A remarkable picture of crash test dummies ready to go to work.

Mervie the Morris Minor has many stories to tell, but some will remain unreported.

We really will leave it at that now! Little did we know all these years later Roger and I would each be contributing motoring stories to this newspaper, but that’s probably one we won’t report. As well as appreciating the messages, I’m also very grateful for gifts received, all of which are fantastic, and they included a copy of The Car Book. This book, chosen by Brett Partel and given to me by him, Rose Acton-Adams and their daughter Lily, is exactly what it claims to be – a definitive visual history. Beginning with the first automobiles up to 1920, it then continues in chapters dedicated to succeeding decades up to the present. It’s chocker full of amazing photos and illustrations, not just of cars, but of other topical subjects accompanied with plenty of explanations. Many of the pictures bring back fond memories. The Car Book is going to take a bit of reading, which of course is something to look forward to; so far there has only been time for a quick glance and even so it’s hard to put down. My fellow Guardian motoring team members, Roger and Steve, have also had a quick browse and, like me, they think this is an awesome book and will prove to be a gift which will keep on giving. It goes to show great minds think alike. Well it shows two great minds think alike and I agree with them. I said to Steve I just had to write about this book – actually my words were more like when I received the book I immediately felt a story coming on. He had only just said he understood,

Quintessentially the Sixties – Twiggy in a Mini.

when being the perceptive person he is he noticed something interesting which he wants investigated – so already a second story is coming on. More will be revealed later. The publishers of The Car Book say it traces the rip-roaring story of the automobile in stunning visual detail, with more than 1200 cars, along with famous marques and the men behind them. It’s a very accurate description. Classic Car magazine suggests the book is the gift for car lovers of any age. Santa if you’re reading this – which you probably are because we know at the North Pole you regularly log in to guardianonline – it may pay to get some copies in stock, because we think you’ll get requests. Well, we’re older than we once were but younger – hopefully much younger – than we’ll be.

A super pastel illustration of driving through Paris in 1908.

O

n Sunday between 10.30am and 2pm there will be an opportunity for all car enthusiasts to meet up in the north end of the West Street carpark for a Show, Shine and natter. All makes and models welcome and so are spectators. It will be a great chance to see interesting cars and there will be an opportunity to give a gold coin donation with all proceeds going to the Cancer Society.

There’s only one Exorcist A nxious GM fans waiting on New Zealand’s first batch of right-hand drive Camaros won’t have to wait much longer, with new versions of the American classic starting to get spotted around the country. With the cork now out of the bottle and the country’s Camaro cherry on the verge of being popped, the aftermarket packages are set to join the fray. No aftermarket package is more in demand right now than the bonkers, nuts, totally mad 1000bhp (745kW) Camaro Exorcist, by Hennessey Performance. And, one is coming to New Zealand. One. Just one. Revealed in 2017, the Exorcist is the answer to the Dodge Demon (Exorcist ... Demon ... see what they’ve done there?). Based on the already potent Camaro ZL1, it combines the standard LT4 6.2-litre V8 with a 2.9-litre high-flow supercharger system, ported cylinder heads, and an incredibly long list of other changes big and small under the bonnet. Upgraded valve springs, intercooler, headers, retainers, intake and exhaust valves, lifters, and pushrods all included. The net result is a whopping 350hp (260kW) more power than standard. The 0–100km/h sprint takes less than three seconds, the quarter mile less than 10 seconds, and top speed is tested to brush 350km/h. Not bad for a big ol’ Camaro, eh? Just 100 Exorcists are being made by the

tuning firm, with just three of them set to come to Australasia – two to our mates in Australia and one to the thirsty Kiwis in Godzone. Each vehicle comes backed with a twoyear, 40,000km Hennessey warranty, too.

The next topic inevitably is pricing, and as you’d expect the figure isn’t exactly charitable. The cost of the upgrade is $105,890, fitted, and not including the donor vehicle. 2017–’18 generation Camaro ZL1s can be had second hand on the New

Zealand market for between $100,000 and $130,000 – making the outright cost of the vehicle $200,000+. That’s a lot, but remember that we’re talking about a limited-run car with only 100 examples on the planet.

otorcycle Live 2018 saw 103,702 bike fans enjoy nine days of actionpacked, interactive twowheeled entertainment, during a show that has been hailed a success by exhibitors and visitors alike. The event in Birmingham was packed with brand-new metal from over 40 of the world’s leading manufacturers. Much of the 2019 machinery on display had been launched just one week previously at EICMA in Milan, while Kawasaki, Norton and CCM chose Motorcycle Live to unveil never-seen-before 2019 models to the bike-mad crowd. The brand-new Moto-Cirque arena debuted with an ultra-spectacular live stunt show which combined FMX, street bikes, BMX and dance – all taking place in total darkness aside from meticulouslyco-ordinated LED lights and lasers, all set

to an awesome soundtrack. “What a show, we’ve had an amazing week”, said CEO of Norton Motorcycles, Stuart Garner. “We’ve had the biggest footfall we’ve ever seen on the stand, so a huge thank you to the organisers for making it happen. It’s been a record show for Norton and we hope everyone has enjoyed it as much as we have.” “We have broken the European record in terms of sales at shows, so Motorcycle Live has been really successful,” said Peter Riley, managing director of Airvest Ltd/Helite UK. “That is obviously fantastic, but what has been the real joy about this year’s show is the people that have visited the stand to tell us how our product has saved their life. “It’s moments like that that make coming to the show absolutely worthwhile.”

First time on track

M

cLaren Automotive has confirmed that the 720S GT3 will be making its public debut at the Bahrain GT Festival today ahead of its maiden competitive appearance at this December’s Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi. Both outings follow an extensive development programme for the new model. The 720S GT3 is the first car designed and built by McLaren Automotive’s inhouse motorsport department. Ahead of initial deliveries to customer teams for the upcoming 2019 season, the new car will run at the Pure McLaren customer event to be held at the Bahrain International Circuit before making its dynamic public debut during the Bahrain GT Festival.

The car will be demonstrated on track, and will form a central attraction on display in the paddock during the event, which incorporates the inaugural FIA GT Nations Cup and SRO GT4 International Cup. Following this appearance, the 720S GT3 then faces its most demanding challenge to date at the Gulf 12 Hours event on December 13-15. One example, entered by the in-house McLaren motorsport team, is set to line up on the grid at the Yas Marina circuit, home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The racing environment will provide the team with valuable real-world data on the 720S GT3, which is currently undergoing a rigorous and demanding test programme. The new machine will be pitched

All-New Santa Fe

against one of the most competitive grids for what is fast becoming one of the most fiercely contested fixtures on the global GT calendar. In anticipation of the McLaren 720S GT3’s public and competitive debuts, the car’s development programme progresses on to the next stage this month, as the team relocates to the Middle East for further track running. This latest stage in the development programme will see the 720S GT3 continue to be tested extensively ahead of homologation for the 2019 season. The all-new McLaren Super Series GT3 challenger, designed and built by the inhouse McLaren motorsport department, has already covered thousands of track kilometres at a wide variety of circuits around Europe.

“We’re looking forward to demonstrating the 720S GT3 at the Bahrain GT Festival, and really thrilled to be competing in the Gulf 12 Hours, which will end an exciting year for the motorsport team. “The 720S GT3 is the first race car designed and built by McLaren Automotive and the development team has worked tirelessly to deliver the gruelling test programme we devised for the car. “We’re sure we’ll have plenty to learn during the race, and we’ll continue with testing after the event. “This is an important product for McLaren Automotive, and therefore we have committed to ensuring that our customers receive a product worthy of carrying the iconic brand,” said Dan Walmsley, McLaren Automotive, Director of Motorsport.
