Stunning sophistication B MW Group New Zealand is proud to unleash the sixth-generation BMW M5, available in local showrooms from autumn 2018. “The BMW M5 has characterised the essence of a high-performance executive sedan for over 30 years”, says BMW Group New Zealand managing director, Florian Renndorfer. “New Zealanders continue to have an insatiable appetite for performance vehicles, and the new BMW M5 will more than satisfy this demand with a new level of sophistication, engineering and performance”. Heart of the matter: The new 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The new BMW M5 is powered by a further-developed version of the M Division’s 4.4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine. Newly developed turbochargers combine with increased maximum injection pressure of 350 bar and a 10.0:1 compression ratio to generate 441kW from 5600-6700rpm, up from the 423kW figure recorded by the previous-generation M5 when fitted with the Competition Package. Torque swells to a 750Nm peak, generated from only 1800rpm all the way to 5600rpm, ensuring smooth response and transition from maximum torque output to maximum power. As a result, the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint is achieved in only 3.4 seconds. For the first time ever on a BMW M passenger vehicle, the new BMW M5 incorporates M xDrive all-wheel drive. This highly adaptable system works in conjunction with the legendary Active M locking rear differential to provide optimum traction in all conditions.

Street-legal track toy A
fter two years of development, competition race car builder Dallara has released what could be the best track toy of 2017. The Dallara Stradale is an all-new streetlegal sports car that the company says is designed to ‘rediscover the real pleasure of driving on road or on track.’ You might not recognise the name Dallara, but you’ve diffidently seen their work. For over 40 years the Italianbased company has designed and built some of the world’s most iconic race cars from all corners of the globe. The mono-make chassis’ used in Indycar in America, GP2 & GP3 in Europe and Super Formula in Japan are all built by Dallara. The company has also worked collaboratively on high performance road cars with the likes of Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche – so they know a thing or two about building a fast car. Their newest creation, the Stradale, has been likened to the Lotus Seven of the ‘50s due to its essentially and simplicity by Dallara’s president, Giampaolo Dallara, but the sports car will be available in various configurations. Built on a monocoque chassis and aluminium frames, and bodywork built primarily with composite materials and carbon fibre, the Stradale weighs in at only 855kg dry.
Power comes by way of a rear mid-engine mounted 2.3-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 294kW of power at 6200rpm and 500Nm or torque from 3000-5000rpm, paired with either a
six-speed manual or optional paddle-shift. Both transmissions come with two different mapping modes: Normal and Sport. The result of the lightweight body and comparatively high power output is a
claimed 0-100km/h time of 3.25s (pulling over 2g in the process), 100-200km/h in fifth gear in 8.5s and deceleration from 100-0km/h in 31 only metres. The suspension and the calibration of springs, bars and dampers are said to maximise the compromise between grip and comfort, all of which have been set, developed and defined by test drivers and engineers using Dallara’s Driving Simulator. Dallara also recruited the help of Bosh to develop the engine electronics and traction control system, and Pirelli to develop the Stradale’s own tyre. The standard base configuration of the Dallara Stradale is a barchetta body (without doors) just like a single-seater racing car. However, if you didn’t want to wear a helmet every time you used the sports car, customers can opt for a roadster configuration with a curved windshield. Dallara will also sell the Stradale as a T-Frame or hardtop coupe (bellow). Both roof configurations come standard with gullwing doors. For those customers looking for ultimate track performance, a large rear wing will be available on all versions that produces 820kg at 280km/h which is among the highest in GT road cars. Dallara currently build up to 200 race cars a year, but the company won’t yet say how many Stradales will be produced or how much the various configurations cost.

‘Suitably savage’
M
cLaren has finally revealed its $1.5m, 588kW addition to the top-tier Ultimate Series, heralded as the brand’s ‘most extreme road
car yet.’ Originally referred to as P15 during development and testing, McLaren has chosen to name its latest creation after legendary Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna, who won all three drivers’ titles with the team. The Senna name has not been used lightly. Unlike all other McLaren models to date, the McLaren Senna adopts a ‘formfollows-function’ design philosophy with a single-minded purpose - to be the ultimate track-focused McLaren with number plates. The Senna is the lightest McLaren since the F1 of the 90s, has the most power internal combustion McLaren has ever built and aggressive styling moulded in the pursuit of maximum aerodynamic efficiency. While the McLaren Senna is not a direct replacement to the P1 – currently the only model in McLaren’s Ultimate Series – the new model will sit alongside the hybrid hypercar along with an upcoming three-seater codenamed BP23. The car’s unique appearance is largely due to newly-developed front and rear active aerodynamics components ‘clipped’ onto the teardrop shaped body. A large front splitter up front channels air over, through and un-
der the car, passing vented wheel arches, scoops, inlets and massive rear wing. Both the front splitter and rear wing feature active elements. The double-element rear wing is 1219mm tall at its highest when the car is stationary. Hydraulically actuated, the wing constantly adjusts to optimise downforce and aerodynamic balance, as well as functioning as an airbrake under heavy braking. A large double diffuser in the rear is made from a single piece of carbon fibre, creating a low-pressure zone that sucks the car to the ground. McLaren’s carbon fibre Monocage III chassis forms the core of the McLaren Senna, a development of the structure used in the 720S and the strongest monocoque ever built by McLaren for a road-legal vehicle. Every body panel is made

The engine and transmission can be tailored with different driver modes – Comfort, Sport or Track – but whatever you chose, McLaren say performance will remain ‘suitably savage.’ McLaren hasn’t released any official performance details yet, with the brand holding back all official performance figures until January. The McLaren Senna will be hand-assembled in England at the McLaren Production Centre in 2018. Production will be limited to 500 vehicles, each costing from £750,000 ($NZ1.5 million) and all have already allocated to customers.

Twenty-six stories later ... I t wasn’t yesterday but it feels like it was only a few days before that. I’m sure it was. Well at least that’s how it seems, but really it’s a year ago. A year ago since I was doing what I’m doing now – sitting down to write one last story for the year. Fifty two weeks, 26 fortnights ago. And that equals 26 stories. Where on earth has that time gone? Looking back as we tend to do at this time of year I realise the time has gone quickly because it’s been so much fun to be involved in contributing stories to Guardian Motoring. And to be part of the Guardian Motoring team. It’s been more than fun, it’s been interesting and it’s been enjoyable because of the people involved, especially the enthusiasts who have shared their stories and their memories with us. And of course in some cases we’ve been able to look inside their garages and see fabulous vehicles.
All sorts, shapes and sizes of vehicles, all with one thing in common which makes them all special – they are the pride and joy of their owners. Sometimes friends have shared photos of fascinating vehicles with us. For example Tony Kloet, editor of the Micro Car Club newsletter, send these neat photos of French Micro Police cars, which demonstrate how useful little cars can be and how times have changed. Both are Renaults, the first a 4CV in Paris in the 50s the second is the Renault Twizzy electric micro police car. These came via the internet and so did a delightful story involving a canny Scottish millionaire Ferrari owner. The story sent by Michael and Annette Monti who live in Nelson goes like this: A Scotsman walks into the Bank of England in Threadneedle Street, Central London and asks for the manager. He tells the manager that he is going to Australia on business for two weeks and needs to borrow £5000. The manager tells him that the bank will
Bernard Egan MOTORING
need some form of security for the loan, so Hamish hands over the keys and documents of new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank. He produces the Log Book and everything checks out. The manager agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank’s General Manager and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the rough looking Scotsman for using a £120,000 Ferrari as collateral against a £5000 loan. An employee of the bank then enjoys driving the Ferrari into the bank’s underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, Hamish returns, repays
the £5000 and the interest, which comes to £15.41. The manager says, “Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. “While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. “What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow £5000?” Hamish replies, “Where else in London can I park my car for two weeks for only £15.41 and expect it to be there when I return.” Actually I need to tell you this is just one of a great many funny stories which the Montis, who have a superb sense of humour have entertained myself and others with. On receipt of this one I couldn’t help responding with the suggestion it could end up in a motoring story. Michael Monti’s retort was “don’t see why not”. So there you have it. Hopefully our ever helpful sub editor – himself also possessed of a great sense of humour – will agree. If you’ve just read the story he does! It really does only seem like yesterday when we were winding down at the end of last year. It’s great to look back on the tales we’ve shared during 2017 and it’s really great to look forward to the stories we’ll share in the New Year. For inspiration I must look back and see how we kicked off this year probably along similar lines to the way this column began – it only seems like yesterday I was writing the first column for last year. Gee I’ve got the start for a column in January 2018!

introduced when it went on sale in 2015. Performance from the 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 is spectacular with the 0-60mph dash being completed in just 3 seconds and the 488GTB topping out at 205mph. If you have £180,000 burning a hole in your pocket, you could barely spend it in a more thrilling way.

place. Thousands of prancing horse devotees have overwhelmingly declared the Ferrari 458 Italia to be the greatest ever V8 from Maranello. Pitched against everything from the tax-break 208 to the current 488GTB, the 458 mopped up a landslide 42 per cent of the vote, more than twice the support for its nearest rival. In its latest issue, quarterly magazine Enzo conducts an epic, beautifully photographed group test of some of the greatest V8 Ferraris of all time and delivers its verdict, and now the general public has delivered theirs. Every issue of Enzo is 100 per cent Ferrari, with the team compiling a selection of road tests on the latest models as well as drive stories and track tests of classics from the Maranello brand’s glorious past. Readers also get interviews with leading personalities in the Ferrari world, expert insights into the marque’s past and future, plus much, much more. The top 5 greatest ever V8 Ferraris

Just pipping a perennial favourite to fourth place with 6 per cent of the vote is the car that bridged the gap between the 360 and the 458. Having been first shown at Paris, it was in production from 2004 until 2009 and was powered by a 4.3-litre V8. Mid-mounted, of course. Kept honest by the E-Diff, it was a brilliant cross-continent sports car capable of a 3.9-second 0-60mph and just shy of 200mph. Having taken its bow at Frankfurt in 2009, the successor to Ferrari’s 430 stayed in production until just a couple of years ago and was mobbed with plaudits and awards from day one. With a mid-mounted 4.5-litre V8, it revs to a mighty 9000rpm, boasts more than 550bhp, propelling it to 62mph in 3.4 seconds and on to a top speed of over 200mph.
raris and, with a capacity increase and the introduction of a new cylinder head, it was considered a real return to form. The longitudinal 3.5-litre V8 cost just over £80,000 new and pumped out 375bhp for 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds and over 180mph. Built in record numbers for a Ferrari at the time (over 11,000 were manufactured), it garnered some 20 per cent of the vote.
