he eagerly-anticipated New Phantom from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has arrived in New Zealand. The brand’s sole authorised dealership, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Auckland, is one of the first in the Asia Pacific region to receive a production model after its recent global launch in London. Dealer Principal Ian Gibson said; “We are absolutely delighted to have the acclaimed New Phantom with us. Over the years, it has proven to be the benchmark luxury icon, gaining the attention of some of our most successful entrepreneurs. The state-of-the-art Phantom echoes the world-class luxury experiences and craftsmanship that New Zealand is famous for.” Rolls-Royce’s tireless ‘strive for perfection’ has resulted in the constant refinement of this pinnacle luxury item – with New Phantom now taking the centre stage of New Zealand’s super-luxury arena. New Phantom offers a thoroughly contemporary design interpretation of Rolls-Royce DNA – one that symbolises sheer power of presence. The new spaceframe, exclusive to Rolls-Royce, is lighter yet 30 per cent more rigid than its predecessor. New Phantom owners will enjoy the effortlessness of the all-new, 6.75 litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, delivering 563hp and 900Nm of torque from just 1700rpm and spiriting New Phantom from 0-100km/h in a mere 5.3 seconds with the help of its seamless 8 speed, Satellite Aided Transmission.

NZ’s best car 2017

I

t’s been turning heads around the world since its launch, and now the Škoda Kodiaq is New Zealand’s Car of the Year for 2017. The judging panel, made up members of the New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild and the AA, agreed that the Kodiaq ticked every box for a familyorientated seven-seat SUV. For it offers technology and features that go above and beyond the expectations of it’s price point. The Kodiaq lined up against the nine other finalists for the coveted Car of the Year trophy awarded to a new model released to the market between 1 October 2016 and 30 September 2017. The others were: BMW 5 series, Holden Astra, Honda Civic hatch, Hyundai Ioniq, Land Rover Discovery, Mazda CX-5, Subaru XV, Suzuki Ignis and the Suzuki Swift. When announcing the winner, New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild President Robert Barry said the Kodiaq more than lives up to the brand’s tag line of being Simply Clever. For it is more refined than many luxury SUVs, with great design ideas, excellent packaging and competitive price points. He said : “It has made the Skoda brand come of age in New Zealand and reach critical mass, it is therefore no surprise it has won the accolade of 2017 New Zealand Car of the Year.” To which AA Motoring Services General Manager Stella Stocks added “ because the Kodiaq was forced to line up alongside a collection of very worthy and varied contenders this year, this win for Škoda is even sweeter”. “Škoda has presented the world with a great all round vehicle. “While it’s clearly been built with the family in mind, the Kodiaq’s configuration, spaciousness and technology ensures the market has an affordable versatile choice that will endure,” Ms Stocks says. “SUVs remain the most popular segment in the Kiwi motoring market and Škoda’s entry into the 7-seater space with the Kodiaq, which also has a 5 star safety rating from ANCAP means we’re well served by the brand,” she added. Alongside the Car of the Year award are 12 best in class categories (including a new category for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids) for any new car available on sale in New Zealand. The Best in Class winners, together with the judges comments are:

Micro/light car – Suzuki Swift. Bigger, bolder and better than ever, the

new Swift offers a great blend of driver assistance systems and other new technology, yet it’s lighter, safer, and still fun to drive.

Small/compact car – Holden Astra. The Astra brings fresh new design, new generation engines and excellent driving dynamics and ride quality as well as competitive price points across the hatch, sedan, and station wagon models. Medium/large car – Volkswagen Arteon. By wanting to lure buyers away from luxury car brands with its comprehensively equipped and stylishly designed Arteon, this vehicle is changing people’s perceptions of the Volkswagen brand elevating it into a new realm. Luxury car – BMW 5 Series. The 5-series deservedly lifts the luxury crown this year thanks to its introduction of new technology such as gesture control, parking assistant plus, and wireless telephony charging as well as a suite

of all-new highly efficient powertrain options.

Sports car – Mazda MX-5. More than one million owners can’t be wrong. Not only is the Mazda MX-5 the top selling two-seat sports car around the globe it has retained it fun to drive factor through four generations Small SUV – Toyota CH-R. While it’s unique on road presence won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, the Toyota CH-R impresses with a comfortable ride,

Medium SUV – Skoda Kodiaq. See comments above. Large SUV – Mazda CX-9. The Kodo-designed Mazda CX-9 is also a massive leap forward from it’s predecessor model in technology, efficiency, safety, and driver enjoyment and is fully deserving of this best in class award. Luxury SUV – Land Rover Discovery. The new Discovery not only offers outstanding packaging and comfort for seven people, it maintains it’s unique off-road capability and performance while bringing levels of Range Rover-like quality and refinement to the market at a lower price point.

Birthday for mechanics’ bible

O

ne of the world’s longestestablished vehicle manual publishers, Haynes Manuals, will soon celebrate five decades as a specialist motoring

publisher. The company’s ‘how to’ manuals have been used by mechanics, professional and amateur, throughout the world since the first was published in 1960. It has sold more than 150 million manuals worldwide since, covering automotive and motorcycle repair, maintenance and customising.

The founder, John Haynes, wrote and published his very first book, on building an Austin 7 Special, while he was still a pupil at school back in 1956, although the company says that the first ‘proper’ Haynes Manual, for the Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite sports car was published in 1965. It was based on the teardown and rebuild of a project vehicle, and with extensive use of step-by-step photographs, the first manual set the standard for generations of Haynes Manuals that have followed.

A

Utility – Ford Ranger. The Ranger continues to be New Zealand’s top selling new car for the third year in a row, proving that the vehicle’s popularity is undiminished amongst media and the new vehicle buyers. EV/Plug in hybrid – Hyundai Ioniq. The Ioniq is the deserving winner of this new award thanks to its blend of form and function as well as the electric versions anxiety-bashing travelling range on a full charge, and the speed at which it can recharge. Safest car – Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet. After the success of the GLC in the Safest Car category in 2016, Mercedes-Benz scores a back to back win with its C-Class Cabriolet narrowly beating off close competition from the Toyota Prius. People’s choice – Suzuki Swift. It’s the one that the NZ public voted for and over 50,000 people had their say ...

Agility, dynamism and safety

T

he roar of an engine pierces the morning calm. Down a winding road which has been closed to traffic speeds the new SEAT Leon CUPRA R, the brand’s most powerful model, driven by racer Jordi Gené, who relates how it feels to drive this vehicle for the first time: “In CUPRA mode, with 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 5.7 seconds, some of the first impressions felt while sitting at the wheel are agility, dynamism and safety”, says the SEAT driver and brand ambassador. Before turning on the ignition, Gené selects the new CUPRA mode from the SEAT Drive Profile to increase and enhance the driving experience. “It provides you with a quicker engine response, goes from 800 to 1000 rpm and lends greater stiffness to the steering”. Better grip when cornering: One of the aspects he highlights on this model is how easily it handles when entering curves, and once inside, its ability to remain on course. “This is thanks to its VAQ self-locking differential, which transmits 100 per cent of available torque to a single wheel. “In addition, it completely prevents negative effect on steering response when accelerating out of a sharp bend”, he explains.

Blind trust: “You feel safe when driving it”, assures this racing expert. The SEAT Leon CUPRA R excels with its aerodynamic package featuring carbon fibre details on the body and new spoilers. In fact, its downforce has been im-

wheel, the side mirrors and the front grille. In addition, and for the first time, it is available with Matt Pyrenees Grey body paint. The interior of the vehicle also features

a laser-engraved inscription on the centre console as a further reminder that it is an exclusive limited edition. SEAT is the only company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets cars in Spain. A member of the Volkswagen Group, the multinational has its headquarters in Martorell (Barcelona), exporting 81 per cent of its vehicles, and is present in over 80 countries through a network of 1700 dealerships. In 2016, SEAT obtained an operating profit of 143 million euros, the highest in the history of the brand, and achieved worldwide sales of nearly 410,000 vehicles. SEAT Group employs more than 14,500 professionals at its three production centres – Barcelona, El Prat de Llobregat and Martorell, where it manufactures the highly successful Ibiza, Leon and Arona. Additionally, the company produces the Ateca and the Toledo in the Czech Republic, the Alhambra in Portugal and the Mii in Slovakia. The multinational has a Technical Centre, which operates as a knowledge hub that brings together 1000 engineers who are focussed on developing innovation for Spain’s largest industrial investor in R&D. SEAT already features the latest connectivity technology in its vehicle range and is currently engaged in the company’s global digitalisation process to promote the mobility of the future.

Dorsoduro delivers fun. Oodles of fun.

I

could take the easy way out on this and just sum the new Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 up in three words: Pure. Unadulterated. Fun. But I won’t. Aprilia is a master of lustful bikes (you just need to listen to its flagship V4 motors to get hooked), so it’s unsurprising it has done a bang-up job of making the Dorsoduro a bike so focused on fun. You can’t help but get swept away with it. We already knew the brand to be capable of this from the previous generation of Dorsoduro, which made use of the 750cc V-twin found in the Shiver of the time. It was a brilliantly fun machine, and the 900 builds on this and turns up the volume to 11. The 2018 bike still features the same supermoto inspired styling, with a gorgeous red trellis frame holding the fantastic sounding V-twin in pride of place. The only downside to the styling of the Dorsoduro is a firm seat – which harks back to the dirt bike routes of the genre – and lack of tie-down points for luggage. A long distance tourer this is not. Aprilia’s new 900cc V-twin, which is also found in the new Shiver 900 is, in fact, not an all-new engine, with Aprilia finding the 750cc V-Twin to be such a reliable performer it instead used it as the base for the new 900. In order to bump up the capacity by 150cc, Aprilia’s engineers stroked the engine, increasing it by 11mm to 67.4mm but

leaving the bore unchanged at 92mm. The result is a slight increase in power but, more importantly, torque is now a thumping 90Nm which the rider can fully make use of. As usual, an increase in performance is usually matched by some tweaks to the electronics, and the Dorsoduro is no exception. Along with the new engine, there is a cutting edge TFT dash – which greets you with the Dorsoduro 900 logo at each turn of the key – and it reads crystal clear as TFTs tend to, switchable ABS, and multiple

traction control modes. The new TFT display is beautiful to look at, and is easily readable, but, oddly, despite its ability to display all the technical info under the sun, it doesn’t display a fuel gauge. The rest of the electronics are top notch, and seemingly are much quicker to flick between using the familiar toggle on the left-hand bar than the previous generation. Everything apart from ABS can be adjusted on the fly – including the Aprilia Traction Control – meaning you can tailor your ride as it happens.

Want to wheelie? Turn the ATC down to zero and lift away. Rain starting to fall? Swap modes to rain and up the ATC. It’s all incredibly easy. But it’s the hardware that puts the Dorsoduro on the map. There’s the quality 41mm adjustable KYB forks and a similarly adjustable monoshock out back absorbing bumps, but the standouts are the front brakes. I would think twice before switching the ABS off and grabbing a handful of the twin, 320mm four-piston anchors up front. With the ABS on, I decided to put those brakes to the test. After all, they’re not the monobloc Brembos you often see on Italian machinery. The result was what felt like the biggest stoppie in my riding history as I rapidly came to a halt. You can literally stop the Dorsoduro on its nose if you’re not careful. Regardless of its little “Italianisms”, the Dorsoduro is fun incarnate. If you can see past the Supermoto styling and its lack of practicality, you are in for a grin of a time riding the Dorsoduro through our tight, twisty roads. - By Mathieu Day-Gillett
