When rugged meets elegance T he Land Cruiser Prado has been given new exterior and interior styling, a safety equipment boost and bigger tow rating for 2018. Serious off-road capability in a large SUV, while its occupants can travel in comfort with plenty of interior space, is a hall-mark of the seven-seater Prado. Now rated to tow a maximum braked capacity of 3,000 kgs, an increase of 500 kgs over the previous model, expect to see the new Prado making light work of getting boats and caravans to popular holiday destinations this summer. Spencer Morris, the General Manager of Product for Toyota New Zealand, says “it’s hard to beat the Prado’s usability for those with an outdoor lifestyle.” “With its ability to tow heavier loads the Prado will now make more people’s shopping lists.” Another significant change is the introduction of the suite of safety technology bundled within Toyota Safety Sense, which includes the Pre-Crash Safety System with Autonomous Emergency Braking for vehicles and pedestrians; Lane Departure Alert with Vehicle Sway Warning; Automatic High Beam and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. The front of the Prado has had a complete makeover, to create a look that is more consistent between the Prado and Land Cruiser 200. The bonnet takes on a more chiselled look with a refreshed bumper and front guards, while the grille, headlights and fog lights
have a more integrated feel. At the rear, the door garnish is new, as are the tail light clusters and bumper. The daytime running lights on the Prado GX now have LED operation like the other variants, while on the VX and VX Limited the front fog lights and high beam now have LED operation. For 2018, the GX has newly designed 17-inch alloy wheels with angular cut out spokes, while the paint finish on the 18inch alloy wheels fitted to the VX and VX
Limited has been revised with a brighter finish. There are two new exterior colours – Peacock Black and Avant Garde Bronze in the eight-colour range. Inside the more upscale interior, the dashboard, instrument binnacle and switchgear are newly designed. The revised centre console, which incorporates a flush-surface air-conditioning control panel, has a lower profile at the top for a sleeker appearance and improved forward visibility.
The audio display screen for all models increases from seven to eight inches and the GX gains a 4.2-inch colour multi information display. Four new viewing modes – underfloor, wide rear display, front rotating display and panoramic view – have been added to the multi-terrain monitor fitted to the VX and VX Limited models. All three Prado models come with the same 2.8 litre turbo diesel engine with 450 Nm of torque.

Sniffing out transonics A
500mph target has been set for the Bloodhound SSC land speed record challenger when it makes its first runs on the dry lake bed race track at Hakskeen Pan, Northern Cape, South Africa in October 2018. Following successful 200mph (320km/h) runway trials at Cornwall Airport Newquay in October, the team is targeting 500mph (804km/h) – a key milestone on the journey to setting a new World Land Speed Record. The ‘Bloodhound 500’ trials will test the car’s performance and handling during one of its most vulnerable phases – the zone between 400 and 500mph (640800kmh) where the stability of the car transitions from being governed by the interaction of the wheels with the desert surface, to being controlled by the vehicle’s aerodynamics. The team says grip from the wheels will fall off faster than the aerodynamic forces build up, so this is likely to be the point where the car is at its least stable. Data on the interaction between the solid aluminium wheels, coupled with ‘base drag’ measurements, will provide a real world insight into the power required to set records. Base drag relates to the aerodynamic force produced by low pressure at the rear of the car, sucking it back. As the car approaches transonic speeds, this force far exceeds the friction of the air passing over Bloodhound’s bodywork. The Bloodhound 500 tests will be conducted using the car’s Rolls-Royce EJ200
jet engine, normally found in a Eurofighter Typhoon, which produces a peak thrust of 20,000lbs (90 kilonewtons), equivalent to 54,000 thrust horsepower, or the combined output of 360 family cars. The car will run for the first time with its solid aluminium wheels, specially designed for the desert surface. Measuring 900mm in diameter and weighing 95kg each, they are designed to spin at up to 10,200rpm – more than four times faster than wheels on an F1 car at top speed.
The result of 30 years of research and design, they were created by an international consortium and forged from high grade 7037 aircraft grade aluminium alloy. The wheels have a V-shaped keel which digs into the alkali playa (baked mud) surface by 25mm when the car is stationary. As speeds increase, the wheels will rise up out of the mud surface and plane in much the same way as a speedboat rides up on the surface of the water. At 500mph (804km/h) and above, just a
few millimetres of metal will be in contact with the desert surface and the giant aluminium discs will act more like rudders than the wheels on a conventional car. The 19km desert racetrack at the Hakskeen Pan has been prepared by 317 members of the local Mier community. They have moved 16,000 tonnes of rock from 22 million square metres of dry lakebed. ‘‘The track is 19km by 500m, with large safety areas on both sides,’’ said engineering director Mark Chapman. ‘‘This allows us to lay out up to 50 individual tracks side by side. This is important as we can’t run over the same piece of ground twice because the car will break up the baked mud surface as it passes. “We need multiple tracks so we can build speed slowly and safely – going up in 50mph (80km/h) steps, comparing realworld results with theoretical data – and Hakskeen is the perfect place to do this. ‘‘The surface is hard, too, which means we’ve been able to design slightly narrower wheels that reduce aerodynamic drag.” RAF Wing Commander Andy Green will drive the Bloodhound SSC land speed record contender. During low-speed shakedown trials earlier this year driver, Green, the current World Land Speed Record holder, drove Bloodhound SSC from a standing start to 200mph in 8 seconds. The goals for Bloodhound SSC are to reach 800mph to set a new world land speed record and then attempt to exceed 1000mph (1609km/h).
Mono’s first public outing B riggs Automotive Company (BAC) – the Liverpool-based manufacturer behind the world-famous Mono supercar – is confirmed for the Performance Car Show in January. Mono is the world’s only singleseater, road-legal supercar that’s earned plaudits around the globe for its blistering performance and one-of-a-kind characteristics, and it’s sure to enjoy plenty of attention. BAC will take pride of place on Stand 19410 at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), showcasing the 2018 Model Year Mono that includes a whole host of new standard technology – including a lightweight, lithium-ion battery. The 2018 Model Year Mono’s arrival at the Performance Car Show is its first ever public showing, making this another exclusive first for the event. The Mono defies belief when you first get up close and personal to it – its stature and single-seat setup make you wonder how it’s allowed on roads both in Britain and in several territories around the world. Despite this, it’s still perfectly suited for ferocity on the track and has taken some giant lap time scalps in its time – including topping the TopGear Power Lap Times Leaderboard with Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond in 2013.

Little Polo just got bigger
T
he new Volkswagen Polo is being readied for a February introduction to the New Zealand market. It’s the next phase in a Polo evolution that began when the original was launched in 1975 and has seen 14 million units sold worldwide. This sixth generation boasts an increase of 81mm in overall length and 94mm in the wheelbase, and is 69mm wider. There’s also a 25 per cent increase in boot capacity from 280 litres to 351 litres. Details of the New Zealand line-up have yet to be confirmed. Europe has nine Euro-6 compliant engines for the Polo, ranging from a base model 1.0-litre unit with 48kW to the new 1.5-litre TSI EVO with 110kW output and fuel-saving cylinder deactivation (ACT) technology. The Polo GTI that will follow gains a performance boost with a 2.0-litre TSI unit developing 147kW and in Europe there are two 1.6 TDI diesel engines offering outputs of 59kW and 70kW – both equipped with an SCR catalytic converter. All Polo engine variants come equipped with a stop-start system and a regenerative braking mode as standard. “The new Polo personifies what Volkswagen is all about; world class engineering and technology that is accessible to the people,” said Tom Ruddenklau, general manager of Volkswagen New Zealand. “The new Polo is a technological marvel and benefits from the significant R&D investments Volkswagen has placed into its older siblings, the Golf, Tiguan, Passat and Touareg. “It possesses world-class features and safety normally found in cars twice its price. “We are fortunate to have many thousands of customers, many on their second or third Polo and it is great to be able to offer these loyal customers something quite special with the new Polo.” The technology content includes a stateof-the-art driver assistance and comfort
systems. Those new to Polo include Front Assist with City Emergency Braking, Pedestrian monitoring and Blind Spot monitoring detection. Such technology is usually reserved for higher class models such as the Golf or Passat. The Polo will be the first Volkswagen model to feature a new generation of the
optional Active Info Display. It has also been given the latest generation of infotainment systems controlled from an 8.0-inch glass covered touchscreen. And for serious music lovers the Polo Beats variant comes with a powerful 300-watt sound system with eight channel amplifiers, six loudspeakers and a sub-
woofer to optimise sound quality. Polo Beats also includes unique design detailing. With the imminent arrival of the new model, the current generation Polo is available at special run-out pricing with the 1.2 TSI Comfortline manual priced from $20,990 and the 1.2 TSI Comfortline auto from $23,990.
Toyota edging up to No. 1 T oyota Motor Corp. says it sold 10.35 million vehicles around the world this year, up 2 per cent from the previous year, and predicts higher sales next year. The number is likely to put the Japanese automaker close to last year’s No. 1, Volkswagen of Germany. Volkswagen sold 10.3 million vehicles last year, putting it ahead of Toyota and General Motors. Toyota, which sold nearly 10.2 million vehicles worldwide last year, said it expects to sell 10.495 million in 2018. Nissan-Renault, the alliance between Japan’s Nissan Motor Co. and Renault SA of France, which reported solid sales in the first half of this year, has run into some sales problems after inspections irregularities were reported at its Japanese plants. Nissan has been doing massive recalls and the scandal has dented sales.
The other automakers have not yet reported this year’s sales numbers. Toyota executives repeatedly say they are not seeking to be No. 1 in global vehicles sales and that chasing numbers could even be unhealthy. But competition is intense not only in major markets like the US and Europe but in relatively new markets like China and India, where growth is expected to be stupendous in coming years. Toyota reported that sales grew 10 per cent in Japan, while it grew 1 per cent abroad, this year. The maker of the Camry sedan, Prius hybrid and Lexus luxury models, was not as optimistic about its sales in Japan next year, projecting a 5 per cent decline, while it sees its sales outside Japan would continue to grow. Locally, Toyota is New Zealand’s biggest selling brand with 18,522 vehicles sold with December registration results still to be announced.

McLaren gets the nod at evo
P
erformance car title evo has celebrated British motoring success with the announcement of its Car of the Year awards, with the McLaren 720S being named both Car of the Year and Best Supercar of 2017. The coveted awards further recognise British brands, with the new Bentley Continental GT and the Lotus Elise Sport 220 named Best GT and Best Sports Car respectively. The evo Car of the Year awards recognise the top performance cars across ten key categories, from hot hatch to hypercar via every sector in between. The road testers at evo judge the cars on their on-road dynamics, performance and, crucially, whether they deliver the thrill of driving. For 2017, evo Car of the Year for the first time recognises and crowns not only an overall winner but also a winner from every category represented within evo’s data section, The Knowledge. Stuart Gallagher, editor of evo, commented, “The McLaren 720S is as much about what it represents for the company, how far it has come and, perhaps crucially, what is yet to follow. “It is the product of a manufacturer that hasn’t changed its focus on wanting to build the most exciting, thrilling and best performance cars it can.” Deputy editor of evo, Adam Towler, added, “You expect the 720S to be
staggeringly fast, but what really leaves an impression is just how accessible the performance is. “The ride is smooth and the driving position is as close to perfect as you’ll get. “This is one very special car. “The success of British-based manufacturers in eCoty bears testament to the strength and depth of British engineering talent, tradition and creativity, in particular within the performance car sector. “Whether it’s the rapid ascendancy of new marques such as McLaren, the revitalisation of older favourites such as Lotus, or the rebirth of TVR, the British sports car industry is in rude health.”
