Stairway to heaven A

dizzying 99 turns and 999 daunting steps didn’t stop the new Range Rover Sport PHEV from completing a worldfirst at one of China’s most famous landmarks. The petrol-electric performance SUV has become the first vehicle to climb the stairs to the natural rock arch of Heaven’s Gate. The challenge began at the bottom of the legendary 11.3km Dragon Road. The showroomstandard Range Rover Sport P400e took on the demanding course, with Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Ho-Pin Tung behind the wheel and the Terrain Response 2 system in Dynamic mode. At the summit of the road, the driver optimised Terrain Response, conquering the towering 45-degree staircase of 999 steps leading to China’s legendary Heaven’s Gate using a combination of Ingenium petrol and electric battery power. Ho-Pin Tung said: “I’ve experienced Formula E, Formula 1 and won at the 24 Hours of Le Mans but this was without doubt one of the most demanding driving challenges I’ve ever faced. The Range Rover Sport PHEV performed brilliantly on the mountain road and climbed the stairs up to Heaven’s Gate effortlessly.” The new PHEV powertrain gives the Range Rover Sport a zero-emission EV range of up to 50km when fully charged but Ho-Pin Tung used its advanced 300PS Ingenium petrol engine and 116PS electric motor to make short work of the road section of the challenge. The performance SUV then showed its uncompromised all-terrain credentials by climbing the steep staircase to the natural rock arch.

Refined, trusty - and tough G iven the quite exceptional standard of grooming and detailing Karen and Samantha at Ashburton Toyota had carried out on the test Prado, VX it seemed a real pity to get it dirty! But of course one had to do it, in this rugged seven-seat SUV which has recently had a make-over, both outside and in. So an early(ish) morning drive through to the Jollie Car Park at the gates of Mount Cook station for a bike ride on the A2O, from there to Tasman Point, and back, was the order of the day. Prado’s “facelift” means a sleeker front complete with a family grille, different bonnet, front mudguards and LED lights, the result of which shows it’s a close relation to the Land Cruiser 200. For some these exterior changes may not be quite so obvious, so perhaps the upgrading of the spacious interior will be more noticeable, for within there’s many refinements. They include the new dash in the VX whose 8-inch multi-function screen, smart instruments and switchgear proved to be very easy to use, thanks to Toyota’s attention to detail. As well the VX’s screen (VX Limited also) gives panoramic views. The Prado’s big, so these are very handy with parking, and even off-road. All three models (GX, VX and VX Limited) use the same 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine producing 130kW and 450 Nm of torque (the V6 petrol is no more).

It has a 6-speed auto (with selectable high-and-low-ratios) and full time fourwheel drive. As well all three have the significant addition of Toyota’s Safety Sense package. This includes a pre-crash safety system with autonomous emergency braking (for vehicles and pedestrians), lane departure alert, a great dynamic radar cruise control, and more. Standard on the GX are trailer sway control; hands free phone, sat-nav, three-zone climate air-con, reversing camera, rear parking sensors; seven airbags and smart key entry/start. The VX, as driven, adds leather seats(front and second-row with heating) rain-sensing wipers, premium 14-speaker sound system, blind spot monitor/rear cross-traffic alert, front parking sensors, and 18-inch alloys. The VX Limited tops this off with a selectable drive mode system, crawl control, adaptive variable/kinetic suspension systems, a Torsen limited-slip rear differential, seat/steering column memory, power sunroof and a rear-seat entertainment system. The diesel mates up very well with the 6-speed auto, which adapted nicely, and quickly to my driving style. Of course, if you so wish, shifting the lever right into S, allows manual changes. Also,in keeping with the other new refinements made, there’s obviously been work done to provide an even quieter and more refined drive.

Roger Hart ROAD TEST

At open road cruise (1500rpm at 100kmh), then also on the considerable kilometres of shingle roads we covered, the silence was almost Lexus-like impressive! One of the advantages of an early start was having a mostly clear run from Orari to Fairlie, whereon the Prado also impressed with how predictable and wellbehaved it was through corners, given its off-road capabilities. And all done with little body movement. T’was a different traffic story on the way home though. Just past Fairlie a long queue formed behind a an older campervan travelling at a steady 75kmh, with the driver seemingly oblivious to both those behind, and the many places they could have pulled over! Of course you need to venture properly off-road to appreciate the benefit of the full ladder chassis and suspension travel. The low-ratio gearing is just over 2.5.1 and there’s also the locking central differential for the really difficult stuff. Prado can now tow a braked 3000 kg. While the quoted combined fuel consumption is 8L/100 km, for our drive the

trip computer showed 9.6L/100km. P.S. The A2O track to Tasman Point was damaged by the September 2017 floods. A small section was washed away, while other parts are Prado territory being quite heavily scoured and surfaced with layers of hard to ride through deep sand. But this is soon forgotten, for the views of Aoraki/Mount Cook during all of the ride up are simply magnificent!

TOYOTA PRADO VX ■■ Costs: $88,990. (GX is $79,490 and VX Limited $99,990). All plus ORCs. ■■ Engine: 2.8-litre common rail turbodiesel,130kW @ 3400rpm and 450Nm from 1600-2400 rpm ■■ Transmission: 6-speed auto, full time 4WD. Low range transfer ratio 2.566.1 ■■ Stated Overall Economy: 8L/100km. ■■ Size: 4760mm long, 1890mm wide, 2790mm wheelbase. ■■ Approach/Departure angles: 32/34 degrees. ■■ Ground clearance: 220mm. ■■ Turning Circle: 11.6 metres ■■ Warranty: 3-year/unlimited km. ■■ Safety: Panoramic parking camera, front and rear sensors; multiple airbags, traction/stability, hill launch/descent/trailer sway controls and Safety Sense package. 5 star ANCAP rating.

FINALE Prados have a reputation of being tough and dependable with serious off-road capability. Well to this, the latest versions, as indicated by my time with the VX showed that its occupants (seven if needed) also travel in impressive comfort, both on or off-road in the very well furnished cabin.

Rebuilding a legend J

aguar Classic is re-starting production of the iconic D-type race car in Coventry, 62 years after the last example was built in 1956. The first Jaguar D-type to be assembled by Jaguar Classic, an engineering prototype, will make its world debut at the Salon Retromobile show in Paris this week. Just 25 new examples of the D-type will be meticulously hand-built at Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works in Warwickshire. In 1955 Jaguar planned to build 100 D-types. With only 75 completed, Jaguar Classic is now fulfilling the company’s original ambition by creating 25 all-new, period-correct sports cars. The D-type, which won the Le Mans 24 Hours race three times between 1955 and 1957, was powered by the six-cylinder XK engine. Every aspect of the D-types built for clients from 2018 will be created to authentic, original specification. Tim Hannig, Jaguar Land Rover Classic Director, said: “The Jaguar D-type is one of the most iconic and beautiful competition cars of all time, with an outstanding record in the world’s toughest motor races. “And it’s really just as spectacular today. “The opportunity to continue the D-type’s success story, by completing its planned production run in Coventry, is one of those once-in-a-lifetime projects that our world-class experts at Jaguar Land Rover Classic are proud to fulfil.” The D-type is the third continuation vehicle from Jaguar Classic, complementing the six missing Lightweight E-types completed in 2014-15 and nine XKSSs built in 2017-18. Jaguar Classic experts’ painstaking research, with exclusive access to original Jaguar engineering drawings and records,

ensures each new D-type will be built to the authentic specifications laid down by competitions manager Lofty England and his engineers in the 1950s. D-type clients can choose either 1955-specification Shortnose or 1956-spec Longnose bodywork. The engineering prototype is the 1956 Longnose specification, identifiable by its extended bonnet, characteristic tail fin be-

f you’re looking to embark on the ultimate adventure, but can’t decide what vehicle to choose, then look no further than MG Motor UK’s brand-new Compact-SUV, the MG ZS. The MG ZS comes with a fully-transferable 7 year/80,000-mile warranty – which is enough to circle the globe three times. The exciting warranty means all those long, funfilled family road trips can be taken with peace of mind, safe in the knowledge that there won’t be a nasty repair bill should something go wrong. Daniel Gregorious, Head of Sales & Marketing at MG, commented: “At MG, we strive to add value and provide a cost-effective experience for our customers, therefore we chose to back the MG ZS with our best warranty yet. “The warranty allows for worry-free driving, meaning all those spontaneous weekend breaks can be undertaken without the trouble of a unexpected repair bill. “Should anything go wrong, then our extensive network of dealers will be on hand to get you back on the road.” Like the MG3 and MG GS, the MG ZS also comes with the option of a six-year anti-perforation warranty covering against corrosion.

hind the driver’s head, wide-angle cylinder head and quick-change brake calipers. Kev Riches, Jaguar Classic Engineering Manager, said: “Recreating the nine D-type-derived XKSSs was hugely satisfying, and an even bigger technical challenge than the six missing Lightweight E-types, but lessons that we learned from the XKSS project have given us a great

head start on the final 25 D-types. “Each one will be absolutely correct, down to the very last detail, just as Jaguar’s Competitions Department intended.”

Orange Fury

New Mustang hits our shores F ord New Zealand this week confirmed the 2018 Mustang will begin to arrive on our shores from April, bringing more of what pony car enthusiasts want most: more power, more technology, and more choices to make any Mustang their own. Already New Zealand’s favourite sports car, the 2018 Mustang GT’s legendary 5.0-litre V8 engine packs more power and torque than the outgoing version, and a long list of performance and technology upgrades – including a 10-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission and an available MagneRide® suspension. The Mustang’s famous lines, seen everywhere from the silver screen to backroads of New Zealand, are recognisable the world over. For 2018, a more athletic stance and aggressive detailing gives Mustang a confident aesthetic while maintaining the classic visual features that make the Mustang. Overall, the car’s exterior design is now more dynamic, with a lower, remodeled bonnet and grille that delivers a leaner look and refined aerodynamics, upper and lower front grilles, and a new position for the bonnet air-intakes. For the first time, the entire Mustang line will feature all-LED front lights including signature tri-bar lighting. The rear of the car gets revised LED tail lamps for a more technical look, plus a new bumper, fascia and available performance spoiler. A dual-tip exhaust is standard for EcoBoost® Mustang, while the V8-powered Mustang GT now boasts a quad-tip exhaust as standard. Mustang EcoBoost now offers the 19-inch black alloy as standard, while the GT carries over the mesh design from the current model. For a different look, a new five-spoked forged 19-inch alloy wheel is now avail-

able as an option for the GT and a 19-inch aluminium Premium Painted Alloy Wheel is available as an option for the EcoBoost Mustang, while Michelin tyres, the official partner for Ford Performance on road and track, are now standard across the Mustang line-up. Bold exterior colour choices – including all-new signature Orange Fury as well as Kona Blue and Royal Crimson – combined with Over the Top (OTT) stripe packages mean that enthusiasts can order a Mustang with the look they’re after. In fact, the 2018

a 12-inch all-digital instrument cluster, inspired by the Le Mans-winning Ford GT racecar, that customers can customise their own way. A first for Mustang, this all-new instrument cluster offers three separate views. Mustang owners can customise the displays for normal, sport and track modes and choose settings including colour and gauge layout. In conjunction with the new display, all-new Mustang MyMode with memory function allows customers to save their

Mustang offers more factory-fit options than ever before, including a new singlewing rear spoiler, which is part of the USmarket Mustang Performance Pack. Increased personalisation extends to the 2018 Mustang’s new cockpit, characterised by improved touch points and visual cues for a more premium look and feel. The centre console adds a new handstitched wrap with contrast stitching and padded knee bolsters while door handles, rings and bezels are finished in aluminium. Restyled seating surfaces feature new patterns, while there’s also six-way leatherupholstered Recaro sports seating as a factory-fitted option. New technologies for Mustang include

favourite drive settings, including suspension and steering preferences, for next time they get behind the wheel. The new Mustang is so customisable that even its engine note can be adjusted, an all-new active valve exhaust system is standard on all GT models, with a fully variable soundtrack to match the entire acceleration range. The all-new electronic control system includes unique tunes for different drive modes and features real-time adaptive shift scheduling to ensure the right gear at the right time. Steering wheel-mounted shift paddles allow drivers maximum manual control, while Track Apps record the action behind

the wheel for driving development and satisfaction. The 2018 Mustang also benefits from a vast array of Ford Driver-Assist Technology (DAT). Customers can feel more confident than ever behind the wheel with new features like Autonomous Emergency Braking (with pedestrian detection as standard, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane-Keeping Assist as standard. Ford SYNC®3 is standard on 2018 Mustang, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility at no extra cost, as well as an 8.0-inch full-colour that is also the reverse camera display. Performance is at the core of Mustang DNA, offering drivers a unique thrill of acceleration and cornering for the ultimate fun-to-drive experience. Ford’s legendary 5.0-litre V8 engine has been thoroughly reworked, with more power and the ability to rev higher than any Mustang GT before. The 2018 Mustang GT has 33kW more power than its predecessor, delivering a peak of 339kW – around 450 horsepower – as standard. This power increase has been achieved with the first application for Mustang of Ford’s new dual-fuel, high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection on a V8 engine – delivering robust low-end torque, high-rpm power, and improved fuel efficiency. The 5.0-litre Coyote V8 also packs 556Nm of torque, a jump of 26Nm, while the EcoBoost delivers 224kW with 9Nm more torque, now 441Nm. A new 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, available with both EcoBoost and V8 engines, is the best automatic Mustang has offered and boasts Ford-patented technology. This all-new transmission helps deliver higher average power for acceleration – improving responsiveness and performance.
