SHOWSTOPPER

T

he Michelin Supercar Paddock concludes its seventh year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with the flagship Apollo IE hypercar from Apollo Automobil taking the crown of Michelin Supercar Paddock Showstopper 2018. A shortlist of four supercars was compiled through a Michelin UK Facebook poll, with the cars voted ‘showstopper’ from each day of the Festival going into the final on Sunday. A panel of expert judges took to the Michelin Supercar Paddock Live Stage on Sunday afternoon to weigh up the shortlisted cars and agree on one overall ‘Showstopper of the Festival’ winner. Michelin Supercar Paddock presenter and former BTCC Champion Tim Harvey led the panel, which included vloggers Sam from Seen Through Glass and Paul Wallace from Supercars of London, designer Peter Boutwood from Noble Cars and designer from Vazirani Automotive, Chunky Vazirani. Receiving the accolade at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Apollo Automobil general manager Ryan Berris said: “The Apollo IE marks the return of the truest, most organic form of the hyper-car – our flagship that represents the ethos of the brand. “Created from a blank sheet of paper, the IE is the beginning of the next chapter for Apollo. We are so delighted with

this award and the reception the IE has received here at the Festival of Speed, demonstrating the appreciation across all generations for a true, pure hyper-car. “The high revving naturally-aspirated V12 combined with a design that blends lightweight, aerodynamic efficiency with intense emotion and soul. It has really struck a chord with fans and aficionados of all ages and tastes here at Goodwood, and we are extremely proud of that.”

Chief Judge, Tim Harvey, added: “It is not often that we are presented with a supercar as true and pure as the Apollo IE, designed, engineered and built without any cost constraints whatsoever. “This isn’t a commercial enterprise, it is a labour of love and passion and that is a truly rare thing in the modern automotive world. “A 6300cc V12 delivering 335kph and 0-60 in 2.7 seconds, bolted to the road

surface by super high performance Michelin Sport Cup 2 tyres. “What’s not to like?! It was a pretty much unanimous decision by us judges and a well-deserved one too.” Michelin also played host to a number of product debuts on both its main commercial stand and in the Michelin Supercar Paddock, from Apollo (IE), Aston Martin (V12 Vantage V600 and Cygnet V8), Brabham (BT62), Lotus (Exige GT430), Noble (M500), Singer (DLS), Toyota (Supra A90 Concept), Vazirani (Shul Inspire Granturismo), W Motors (Fenyr Supersport), and many more across the Goodwood Festival of Speed weekend. The Michelin Supercar Paddock played host to a number of special guest appearances from stars of the race circuit, television and film, YouTube and the global auto industry. Guests included Emerson Fittipaldi, Mark Webber, Andy Priaulx, David Brabham, Harry Tincknell, Oli Webb, Mr. JWW, Chris Harris, Marino Franchitti, Urban Outlaw Magnus Walker, Darren Turner, Andreas Preuninger, Marek Reichman, Vicki Butler-Henderson, Paul Wallace from Supercars of London, Martin Donnelly, Louise Goodman, Supercar Blondie, Sam from Seen Through Glass and many more across the Goodwood Festival of Speed Weekend.

Look mum, no driver

T

his week Roborace’s Robocar became the first ever driverless race car to complete the Hillclimb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The run is the first in the history of Goodwood to be completed by a race car that has no human driver in the car – a huge milestone moment for the Festival, which this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The electric race car wowed the crowds as it took to the Hillclimb, using a variety of sensors located around the vehicle to give it 360-degree vision of its environment. The information provided by these sensors gives Robocar the ability to localize its position on the hill and detect drivable surfaces and objects using deep neural networks.

The race car’s speed was limited to 120kph to allow visitors to get a good look at the car on its way up the Hill. “We are ecstatic that the team have been able to achieve this landmark run and we hope that it draws attention to the amazing advances that are being made in the automotive industry,” said Rod Chong, Deputy CEO of Roborace. “Robocar is an ambassador for the future technologies we will see on our roads and we hope that inspirational stunts like this will change public perceptions of autonomous vehicles.” “It is an enormous achievement for a race car to complete the very first run of the hill using only artificial intelligence,” said Charles Gordon-Lennox, the Duke of Richmond and Founder of the Festival of Speed. “Roborace has worked incredibly hard

in order to pull this off and we are excited for the public to see them in action over the Festival weekend.” Visitors to the Festival could also experience this historical run from the perspective of Robocar in the FoS Future Lab – an exciting technology showcase which was located in a pavilion on the Goodwood lawn. Inside the exhibition, Roborace offered visitors the chance to try out a fully immersive VR simulator, in conjunction with HTC VIVE and DBOX. In its second year at the Festival, the FoS Future Lab was bigger and even more exciting than its debut appearance at FoS 2017. This year’s exhibition focused on innovation topics like space exploration, autonomous transport, robotics and personal flight.

Visitors were able to view displays and demonstrations, interact with some of the technology and learn more about the new and future technology featured. Robocar, the world’s first autonomous race car, was designed by Daniel Simon, the automotive futurist known for his work in Hollywood films such asOblivion and Tron: Legacy. The vehicle weighs 1350 kg and is powered by four 135kW electric motors used to drive each wheel, for a combined 500-plus hp. An NVIDIA DRIVE PX2 computer processes Robocar’s data, which includes inputs from the LiDar, radar, GPS, ultrasonic, and camera sensors. Roborace provides the car with an API as a platform for teams who then add their AI driver algorithm to the vehicle.

New Holden – options aplenty

H

olden has released details of the first-ever diesel Commodore, launching it alongside the first diesel-powered version of the new medium-size SUV, the Equinox. The two new models provide torque-loving diesel fans with fresh powertrain options and build on technological advancements introduced with the recent launch of petrol powered engine variants. “We anticipate the new diesel Commodore, available in both Liftback and Sportwagon bodystyles, will find particular favour with fleet operators. “It’s a large and comfortable vehicle which provides effortless performance and all-round drivability thanks to the 400Nm of torque available from 1,750rpm delivered via an eight-speed automatic transmission,” said Product Marketing

Manager, Ina Economopoulos. “Fuel efficiency is best compared against the same cubic capacity 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol Commodore LT Liftback model, which sees the advantage go the diesel by almost two-litres per 100km (5.6 litres compared with 7.4 litres). “And with the environment in mind, diesel drivers will be pleased to know the engine has lower CO2 emissions compared with the petrol option.” The new Equinox diesel is a more family oriented proposition which is loaded with increasing levels of specification across the three-model range, all of which feature a 1.6-litre engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Like the new diesel Commodore, the diesel Equinox features fuel-saving auto stop/ start technology as standard, as well as numerous passive and active safety aids which contribute to its five-star ANCAP safety rating. The Equinox line-up starts at $46,990 for the LT, the LTZ is available at $55,900 and the highly-specified range topping LTZ-V priced at $59,990.

Celebrating in style

W

ith a pedigree and heritage like no other, Lotus has today unveiled two unique Celebration cars, the Exige Type 49 and 79, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 to pay homage to some of the most recognisable racers in the British brand’s history and its 70th birthday. The Exige Type 49 and 79 Celebration cars have been hand crafted by Lotus Exclusive in a salute to Lotus’ 70th birthday, and the victory anniversaries of two historic race cars that helped define the brand as one of the all-time great automotive marques. On display and in action over all four days of the Festival of Speed weekend, they’re a fitting tribute to one of the pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit of Lotus’ founder. In 1948 Colin Chapman built his first competition car, in a small London lock-up garage, following his own theories for improved performance. He formed Lotus in 1952 and from there the company continued to innovate in both road and race engineering. Changing the very nature and intent of car design forever, Chapman was at the vanguard of a new way of thinking and his concepts are as relevant today as they were 70 years ago. In addition to 2018 marking the anniversary of Lotus’ birth, it’s a

milestone for two historic racers. With the two one-off cars containing the marque’s DNA, the Exige Type 49 marks the 50 years since Graham Hill clinched both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championship in the Lotus Type 49. Far from being just for show, the Exige Type 49 and 79 Celebration cars by Lotus Exclusive pack phenomenal performance into one of the all-time great chassis designs. Based on the wildest ever incarnation of the Exige the Cup 430, the Type 49 and 79 set the fastest lap time for a road car around Lotus’ hallowed Hethel test track, covering the 2.2 miles in just 1 minute 24.8 seconds. Showing its potential, the Exige Type 49 is taking to the Hill for the Festival weekend, with demonstration runs over all four days and a sprint against the clock in the timed Supercar run on the Saturday afternoon. Employing a supercharger and chargecooler designed specifically for the potent engine, both the Exige Type 49 and 79 possess 430 hp at 7,000 rpm and 440 Nm (325 lbft) of torque from 4,000 rpm. 0-60mph is demolished in just 3.2 seconds (0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds) before they reach a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h).

Exotic yet practical

F

act – nearly half the new vehicles sold in NZ are SUVs. Or classed as such, for the term SUV is indeed wide-ranging. And includes this new X2, which incidentally BMW describe as a Sports Activity Coupe. So it’s no surprise they set out to make it look small and sporty. But in doing so ensured it still has the genes of, and signals its membership of the BMW X family. There’s petrol-only X2s for NZ. While the test car was a 2-litre with front-wheel-drive, there’s also an sDrive1.8i, which has a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo-petrol. It costs $60,900. As well, x-Drive20i (all-wheel-drive) versions priced from $73,900 will shortly be available. While the X2 shares its platform with, and has the same wheelbase as the latest X1, its body is shorter, wider and sits some 7cm lower than the X1. The result is a smart looking, nice sized (it is indeed larger than it looks) coupe-ish version of the X1. So while it may look smaller and sportier, sharing the X1’s platform means it has the same convenient leg-space both front and rear. Head space for those in the rear, because of the sloping roof, is less, although this will only be a problem for those quite a bit taller than my 1.77 metres.

There’s a smooth, integrated, practical feel about the cabin, much of which is also shared with its sibling. However there’s extra brightwork and the test car had colour co-ordinated blue stitching, both for its upholstery and about the dash. The driver and front passengers sports front seats are both suitably elevated and comfortable. Standard equipment includes the latest i Drive system and drive assist package, with active cruise control, front/rear sensors and self parking. As well there’s sat-nav, dual climate air and more. The optional full-colour, head-up display projecting driving info and navigation assistance onto the windscreen was excellent. The luggage space is stated to hold 470 litres and can be easily loaded via the power operated tail-gate. As well the shapely rear seats split and fold 40/20/40 as required to increase load space to 1355 litres. So given these looks, both inside and out you expect the X2’s engine and chassis to multi-task by being able to deliver some fun driving for those who so wish, as well as being easy to drive about town and then a quiet, relaxed, fuel efficient cruiser. For a start, the excellent, strongly performing, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol develops 141 kW, and a broad spread of 280Nm of torque from 1350 to 4600rpm. It’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission, which

The steering is direct and informative and there’s minimal body movement when being hustled through corners. The optional wide 20-inch (19-inch is standard) wheels complete with their 225/40 tyres provide plenty of grip. They can however be vocal on very coarse seal. Of course there’s all the usual driver assistance and safety systems on board to ensure you and yours arrive safely and relaxed.

Roger Hart ROAD TEST

stands out with both its swift and very timely gear changes. Driving proved easy in stop-start traffic and around town, also at cruise on the open road where it felt composed and quiet. But then it just as quickly delivers a rewarding drive when pressing on. And that’s even when its left in the default Comfort mode of its driving experience control. As well there’s an efficiency-enhancing Eco Pro plus Sport modes. The latter gives even more dynamic steering and sharper engine and auto responses, especially so with the gear selector in S, like enabling sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 227 km/h. Staying in either of the other two modes may see you achieving the claimed combined fuel consumption figure of 5.9L/100 km. As indicated above, the combination of well poised on-road stance and firmish sports suspension means a fittingly sporty ride.

BMW X2 S-DRIVE20I ■■

Cost: $70,900 + ORCs (as driven $86,000 – optioned up with 20-inch alloys, HUD, Navigation Plus, power seats, sun roof and more)

■■ Engine: 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder turbo-petrol. 141kW @ 6000rpm and 2800Nm from 1350 to 4600rpm. ■■ Transmission:7-speed dual-clutch auto, front-wheel-drive. ■■ Quoted economy: 5.9L/100km. ■■ Safety: 5 star ANCAP ■■ Turning circle: 11.3 metres ■■ Warranty: 5 years, including roadside assist and 3 years/100,000 km servicing.

FINALE With the X2 BMW stylists have cleverly managed to combine the exotic looks of a stylish coupe within a practical, compact SUV with a nice balance of power, comfort and handling. One that easily seems to be able to match both the driving conditions and your mood!

Roving far and wide A

convoy of 70 rare and important Land Rovers stole the show at Goodwood Festival of Speed this week as part of a record parade up the famous Goodwood Hill, celebrating 70 years of Land Rover. The largest ever batch of vehicles to drive up the famous hill were led by a recreation of the very first Land Rover – a Centre Steer prototype – and ‘HUE 166’, the first Series I pre-production prototype from 1948. The Series I was such a success that it spawned the Series II and Series III, an example of which became the millionth Land Rover sold just 28 years after the very first prototype. That millionth car also appeared in the parade, as part of a group of 25 early Series I, II and III vehicles including fire engines, SAS vehicles, aircraft crash rescue and African expedition heroes – demonstrating the breadth of versatility of Land Rover over the years. All four generations of Range Rover featured in the convoy, including a Trans-Americas Expedition example which crossed the all-but-impassable Darien Gap in 1971. Also present was Land Rover’s Discovery nameplate showcased with an example of each of the five generations, including the first Discovery ever built and the millionth Discovery to roll off the line. Representing Land Rover’s very latest crop of off-road vehicles was an example of each of the latest line-up; Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Evoque and Evoque Convertible.
