Happy New Year to you all! Here’s hoping your start to 2018 has been smooth-sailing and full of fun and family. I, myself, am glad that I’m back at work in the air-conditioning and not expected to run gaily across a beach just because it’s stinking hot outside. Yes, I may be a tad dramatic, but what a summer! From cold to hot to cold to hot, my lawn’s taken off like it’s on steroids. My dislike of hot nor’west days aside, it has been a buzz sharing the festive season with family and friends both from AshVegas and as far afield as Australia. I’m already looking forward to next Christmas ... don’t groan, but next year I’m going to be organised and all will be smooth and blissful, such is my optimism about every Christmas. Never happens, but God apparently loves a trier! Cheers to you,

Justine Smith: D
: Destined for comedy
YOU Magazine | 5
Justine Smith had local audiences in stitches performing her trademark stand-up routine during last year’s sold-out 7 Days Live Tour. Justine spoke with YOU Magazine’s Megan Gnad about her love of regional shows, being a woman in Kiwi comedy and why it’s important to foster the next generation of stars.
A
s one of New Zealand’s most in-demand comedians, Justine Smith can pinpoint the exact moment she’s got the audience in the palm of her hand. Sometimes it’s the big, laugh-out-loud joke that hits a nerve, but often, the biggest reaction is when she discusses matters closer to home. “I love it when I make a gag about my husband, and I see a chick in the crowd elbow her partner and say, ‘you do that!’,” Justine laughs. “That’s payday for me.” The key to Justine’s success is her connection with the audience and instant relatability. Immediately down-to-earth, witty and brutally honest, her hilarious routine has won her fans up and down the country, thanks in part to numerous television spots, regional tours and tonnes of hard graft. The instinct to know what works and what doesn’t is crucial when you find yourself standing in front of a tough-to-
please crowd. But, it’s where Justine is in her element, in fact she says her favourite audience are farmers, because they love a laugh. “Regional shows are honestly the best,” she says. “It’s so great to bring comedy out of the main centres where there probably isn’t a regular comedy scene. There’s usually a real sense of excitement in the crowd. New Plymouth and Rotorua are two towns with really fun regular gigs. “I try to get on those line-ups whenever I can.” Back in December, Justine was thrilled to be part of the 10-date, 7 Days Live tour, which saw her travel the country alongside much-loved New Zealand comedians, Dai Henwood, Jeremy Corbett, Paul Ego, Ben Hurley, Josh Thomson and Jeremy Elwood. Justine works both on screen and behind the scenes as a writer and researcher for the popular TV Three show, that pulls side-splitting gags from the week’s news headlines. “It’s great fun and I’ve become
a regular on the show, which I just love. It’s also a great way to raise my profile as a stand-up, which is what I’m all about. The more people who see you on TV, might actually come and see you live.” The exposure to new audiences – and revolution within New Zealand’s comedy industry – has meant Justine’s life continues to change at a rapid rate, in ways she never could have imagined a few years back. New Zealand comedians are currently in hot demand, with more opportunities and platforms than ever before. As a youngster growing up in Christchurch, comedy was certainly never a career Justine considered, or thought possible. She had long looked up to the likes of the legendary Billy Connolly, Robin Williams and Eddie Murphy, loving the shock value of their outrageous content streaming across the silver screen.

A sketch from Irene Pink (left) and Justine Smith’s 2012 New Zealand International Comedy Festival. This is Copzz.
From P5 “My mum was horrified, which made me love it all the more. I can still repeat most of Eddie Murphy’s Delirious, if you want to be really annoyed,” she laughs. “Later came Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Janeane Garofalo, and the women from Saturday Night Live, and I was in love.” Having left Christchurch at the end of high school, Justine had “zero idea of what I was up to”, but after attending art school, working in bars and travelling, she discovered the potential of her own comedy, at the age of 26. “I knew I wanted to be a comedian the second my first-ever gig ended. I was dared into giving it a go and, as cheesy as it sounds, I knew I’d found my thing. It was literally life-changing.” Cutting her teeth at comedy nights and festivals, she cites the World Buskers’ Festival in her hometown of Christchurch, as a particular favourite. As she established herself on the New Zealand stand-up circuit, the accolades followed, adding the prestigious Billy T Award and the NZ Comedy Guild Best Female Comedian honour to her CV. Now described as a “leading light of New Zealand comedy”, the trail-blazer is a member of the new wave of relatable television comedy stars tapping into the Kiwi psyche. In the past few years, Justine has appeared on The Comedy Gala, AotearoHA, 7 Days, A Night At The Classic, hosted TV3’s Divas, has been a writer for both The Jono Project and Rhys Darby’s show which
screened on both TVNZ and Netflix, Short Poppies. “It will only get more exciting, the more New Zealand comedy is recognised as being world-class,” says Justine, on the industry’s future. “7 Days helps with that every week, and the (Flight of the) Conchords, Rhys Darby, and The Boy With Tape On His Face, have all had huge international success. I think that speaks to the public about the level of talent in New Zealand.” Of course, there is still room for improvement when it comes to gender equality and ensuring women’s voices are heard, but she says it is slowly changing. “It’s a question I’ve been asked so many times, and I struggle to find an answer,” Justine says. “Standing up in front of a room is intimidating and I believe you are judged differently as a woman, but it’s important to remember that 50-60 per cent of most audiences are also women, and like to see themselves in the comic, and hear their voice up there. “It’s about getting women to stay in the industry. Lots start, but then just fade away, but there are so many cool women coming through, I feel excited about the future.” To foster and nurture the young talent coming up the ranks, she says it’s important to “look after the rookies”. While it can be a rather brutal industry, mentor programmes within festivals and lots of seminars and get-togethers throughout the year, mean it also provides a fairly nurturing environment. Justine’s own style of comedy has been
built around observation; watching people interact and scenarios unfold, and finding the nugget of humour that people will connect with, followed by a punchline to make them roar with laughter. Some of her funniest moments feature aggressive driving stories, relationship dramas, visiting the hairdresser and extended hangovers. But, there is a definite line of topics she says she won’t address in comedy, and words she refuses to utter. “Not the swears, I love all of those,” she explains. “But, I never want my comedy to make anyone feel bad, or bullied, or marginalised, so there are derogatory terms and collective nouns I won’t use.” Part of being a comedian is also about challenging and pushing the boundaries, which is where her innate skill and the ability to read an audience comes into play. “I believe in the freedom of speech and I strongly believe stand-up is a fabulous platform,” Justine says. “It’s up to the individual comic. Pushing boundaries is crucial and with stand-up, the audience and other comics will let you know if a real line has been crossed. Right there, right then!” Justine Smith brings her solo show, A Chandelier and a Pint of Beer, to the 25th World Buskers’ Festival in Christchurch for one night only, on January 27. She will also appear on the line-up for Nothing But Stand-up with Cal Wilson, Michèle A’Court and Australia’s Geraldine Hickey. The series of shows run from January 18-27.

Paramedic’s heart attack on the job A team of researchers is partway through a study that will define the links between an individual’s genetic makeup and their lifestyle in heart health. One of those taking part in that study is Mayfield woman Sharon Duthie. She talks to reporter Sue Newman about the shock of becoming another link in her family’s heart history.

or years Sharon Duthie has been a healthy-living farmer and medical professional; she has also been a walking time bomb. On the outside she was fit, lean and a bundle of energy, but inside her body her heart was in trouble. Ironically, Sharon is a fulltime intensive care paramedic working with Ashburton’s St John. She has years of experience dealing with heart patients in crisis, but nothing had prepared her for the day her own hidden condition chose to make itself known. December 16 started out just like any other day. Sharon and her crew were on call, the calls came, they responded. “We received a call-out and as we responded I said to my colleague that the chicken I’d eaten for lunch must have been off. I had a pain around my tummy button and was sweating from head to toe,” she said. Neither symptom sounded alarm bells, but an odd feeling of doom did. Sharon chose to continue working, loaded her patient into the ambulance and went to work checking and stabilising him. And then she collapsed in the back of the ambulance. “The poor patient, at least we’d fixed him up,” she said. The other crew member took one look at Sharon, whipped the ECG leads off her patient and on to Sharon. When the printout started flowing her stunned colleague realised Sharon was having a heart attack.
k
“It was clearly pretty bad. She just said, you don’t want to read this, jumped in the driver’s seat and took off. Basically the bottom part of my heart wasn’t getting enough oxygen.” Fortunately before she crashed on the other stretcher, Sharon had called for a back-up ambulance to help out with the original patient. “Thank goodness for my crew partner’s knowledge and colleagues who arrived in the second ambulance. They expected to help the patient we’d called them to but they found I was in a worse state than him.” At Ashburton Hospital, the blood clot blocking her coronary artery was treated and that allowed a limited amount of blood to start flowing through her badly compromised heart. “The faster the clot’s dissolved the more cardiac muscle that can be saved so I was lucky, but I was also very unlucky because I had a cardiac arrest, my heart rate was down to 30.” Once her condition stabilised Sharon was flown to Christchurch Hospital and later a stent was inserted in her right coronary artery. Her heart attack came because that artery was functioning at just 10 per cent. Emergency over, given her background, Sharon was left wondering how she could have missed the warning signs. And while there are no ‘typical’ signs of an impending heart attack, periods of feeling nauseous and episodes of vomiting over the previous months should have signalled that something was wrong, she said. Men and women present differently when it comes to a heart attack. While men might present with ‘Hollywood-style’ chest-clutching symptoms, women are more likely to demonstrate less dramatic symptoms, Sharon said. “There isn’t any one formula, it’s a wide range of symptoms but the oddest one I

Genetic links to heart health Christchurch Heart Institute professor Vicky Cameron is leading the study into lifestyle and genetic links to heart health, MENZACS, the Multi-Ethnic New Zealand Study of Acute Coronary Syndrome The study aims to identify across three ethnic groups – Maori, Pasifika and European New Zealanders – the genetic risk factors that play a part in heart attacks and angina. The goal is to have 3000 people in the study which is spread across several centres from Auckland to Christchurch. Analysis of material gathered will then begin. The insights gained will help refine screening strategies in high risk subgroups of the population, identify new pathways involved that may lead to new treatments, and potentially improve the ability to prevent the number one cause of premature death and disability in New Zealand coronary artery disease. “We’ve now got 1000 people who’ve had their first coronary

event or angina and we’re collecting information from them and taking genetic samples. These will all be linked in a national database and at that stage they’ll all become anonymous,” Professor Cameron said. Studies in other countries were not terribly relevant to New Zealand because populations changed genetically according to different locations and those genetic changes meant certain population groups might react differently to certain drugs, she said. “The aim is to get a picture of the main risk factors that contribute to heart disease in Maori and Pacific Islanders and to see if these differ from other New Zealanders.” The project is funded for its recruitment stage, anticipated to be completed within three years. Those funders are the New Zealand Heart Foundation and the National Science Challenge, healthy lives programme. Professor Cameron anticipates the research will be a five year project and while the outcome would not produce black and white data it would identify people who were likely to respond to certain drugs and people who were likely to have heart disease. “And for people who have had one event we should be able to reduce the chance of having a subsequent event.” The researchers have had positive responses from people who were offered the opportunity to take part in the study, she said. “Some are a little shocked at first but we’ve been delighted by the willingness to be involved.” Heart attacks are experienced by about 20,000 New Zealanders each year. Traditional risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels and diabetes are important in contributing to the causes of heart disease but approximately 50 per cent of the susceptibility to coronary artery disease is genetically based.

5 top tips to Shop in enjoy Buskers style at South City Just like when you travel to a new country, you need to know the inside info about our republic to get the most out of your trip. That way, you get to see as much as you can and can really get involved. 1. Be early, not late, mate! This advice is for all aspects of our festival. Arrive early for a good spot at a stage. If it’s a theatre show, book your seats early and then arrive early for the show so you get the best seats. Come at the start of the festival so you can come again to your favourite acts. Arrive early for best parking. No matter what, the earlier you do things, the easier it is going to be for you. 2. Our King is called “Cash.” New Zealand might be a plastic card society, however, in our Republic cash will always reign supreme. Our performers always hat at the end. This is your chance to show your appreciation for what you have just watched or been a part of. Start saving those $50 and $100 notes. Cash is also the quickest option at our bars and food vendors so pop by an ATM on the way.
3. Four seasons in one day, aye! We’ve had it all! Blistering sun, gusty nor’westers, torrential rain, and even hail. Make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen and always wear a hat. If you are coming to a late afternoon or evening show, bring something warm, as it can get cold at night. Bring a low chair or blanket to sit on too. If we have to cancel shows we will inform via social media. 4. In the know before you go! Every show is different and every venue is different. There are restrictions in place for a few shows this year so make sure you bring ID. We can turn you away if you are intoxicated, underage or act inappropriately. There are no refunds if we do this, so please look after each other. 5. Having fun is mandatory! Bring your voice and show how much you love the festival. Christchurch audiences during our festival now have a reputation. Performers around the globe talk about how wonderful you all are. Let’s show those artists a good time, smile, laugh, cheer and be appreciative.

Gluten-free? You don’t need to miss out
My recipe inspiration FOR FOODIES this month comes with Sarah Kingsbury from my son Braden, who has celiac disease. I wanted to create some of his favourite recipes without the gluten, so he doesn’t miss out.
Citrus slice I use a 15cm by 20cm slice tin. Base: 175g soft butter 300g sugar 300g ground almonds 375g gluten-free flour 1 egg 1t baking powder – Mix all base ingredients together in a mixing bowl with a paddle. Press into the slice tray and bake at 180°C for 12 minutes, or until golden. Let cool and break into pieces. This will give the texture of biscuit crumbs in the base of the slice. – Cut into quarters two lemons and two oranges and puree together in a Magic Bullet. – Add this puree to a mixing bowl, along with 2C coconut, 1/4 C condensed milk, and the cooked base pieces. Mix with paddle until combined and press into slice tin. Leave to chill for 2 to 3 hours. – For the cream cheese icing, mix together 600g icing sugar, 270g cream cheese and 150g butter.
Chocolate caramel peanut slice 500g peanuts Salt and oil Base: 150g butter 1C gluten-free flour 2C coconut 2C brown sugar 1/2 t gluten-free baking powder Filling: 800g condensed milk 4T golden syrup 1C brown sugar Icing: 150g cream 320g chocolate buttons – Prepare a deep 15cm by 20cm tin for this slice. – Roast peanuts on a roasting tray, with a shake of salt and oil. Cook 10 minutes until golden. – Base: Mix together butter, flour, coconut, brown sugar and baking powder. Press into slice tin and bake at 180°C for 12 minutes, or until golden. – Filling: Melt together on stove condensed milk, golden syrup and brown sugar. Mix in the roasted peanuts. Pop in the oven for 10 minutes. – And finally the icing: Heat cream on stove, take off heat and whisk in chocolate buttons. Spread on cooled slice.

t Courgette and feta fritter stacks Put 2 eggs, 1C gluten-free flour, 2C milk, 2t gluten-free baking powder and salt and pepper to a mixing bowl. Mix until there are no lumps. Add 2C grated courgette and 3/4 C feta. Cook mixture on grill or in frying pan in 1/4 C portions.
Serve in a stack with your favourite fillings. Today I’ve used baby spinach, streaky bacon, cream cheese mixed with beetroot chutney, and a slice of camembert. Skewers will help hold it together!
Potato muffins Cook 6 potatoes and mash with cream, butter, and salt and pepper. Mix with a handful of grated cheddar cheese, 2 eggs, spring onion, creamed corn, capsicum and ham. Pour mixture into Texas muffin tins. Bake for 15 minutes at 180°C. Serve straight away with salad and relish.

Instead, she recommends practising moderation rather than complete restriction for two reasons: Firstly, people are hardwired to enjoy eating treats and food that tastes good. Restricting certain items can encourage binge eating. The second reason stems from a psychological point: Restriction impacts blood glucose regulation, which can cause cravings for the very foods we’re trying to avoid.

Why you should let go when you sneeze When sitting in a quiet theatre or a packed train, stifling a sneeze may seem like the courteous option. However, doctors in the UK have warned against it after a man ruptured the back of his throat while trying to contain the convulsive explosion of air. The 34-year-old was admitted to hospital barely able to swallow or speak after pinching his nose and clamping shut his mouth to stop a sneeze. A scan confirmed that air from his lungs had bubbled its way into the deep tissue and muscles of the chest. Ear, nose and throat specialists at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust released details of the man’s condition in BMJ Case Reports and warned that trying to contain a forceful sneeze could lead
to “numerous complications” and even a lethal brain aneurysm. “Halting sneezing via blocking the nostrils and mouth is a dangerous manoeuvre, and should be avoided,” said Dr Wanding Yang, lead author. Doctors said the man’s condition was similar to Boerhaave’s syndrome in which the oesophagus is torn as a result of intense retching or vomiting. But in his case the build-up of pressure from the trapped sneeze caused a rupture higher up in the throat, at the pharynx, which is just behind the tongue. Previously people have been admitted to hospital suffering from burst eardrums, ruptured blood vessels in the eyes, damaged facial nerves, pulled muscles and even cracked ribs from trying to contain
the huge force. Doctors say a sneeze, or sternation, is intended to release foreign and potentially damaging particles, irritants or germs. Stopping it not only risks rupturing the throat, but could encourage the build of bacteria or trigger an asthma attack. The patient was admitted to hospital where he was fed by a tube and given intravenous antibiotics until the swelling and pain had subsided. After seven days the man, who has not been identified, was well enough to be discharged. Doctors recommend letting sneezes rip into a tissue instead. And for people still needing to suppress a sneeze, experts advise rubbing the nose, breathing heavily through the nose, or rubbing the area above the lip. –NZME

Curcumin absorption There are so many turmeric and curcumin products on the market, and with good reason – curcumin is well-regarded and well-researched for its ability to support your joint, brain and immune health. But did you know that curcumin is difficult for your body to absorb? The primary issue with curcumin absorption is that it is a fat-soluble nutrient in a watery environment. Curcumin needs to be made water soluble before it can be effectively absorbed through your intestinal wall. Another challenge with the absorption of curcumin is its size. Curcumin is absorbed between the microvilli of your intestinal wall. The microvilli are finger-like projections found on the villi of your intestines. The gaps between microvilli are where substances like curcumin are absorbed, and these gaps are only around 50 nanometres wide. In curcumin’s natural state, it is just too big. Solgar Curcumin 185x is scientifically-designed to find a

way around these challenges. Mimicking your body’s own natural digestive processes, Curcumin 185x offers 185 times the bioavailability of native-state curcumin, and, unlike its native state, will remain in your blood plasma for over 24 hours. It does this through recreating the natural process of micellation. This allows fat-soluble nutrients to be carried in the water-soluble environment of the digestive tract, and then delivered directly to the intestinal wall for absorption. At only about 30 nanometres, these curcumin micelles fit comfortably between the microvilli’s gaps. This increases the bioavailability of the curcumin, and decreases the quantity needed to achieve results. Always read the label and take as directed. With the festive season behind us we may be looking at our skin (and/or the scales!) and thinking darn….. all of that food and drink has taken its toll. For me my skin broke out, looked dull, therefore lacked lustre and that lovely dew point glow, fine lines were accentuated, the circles under my eye darkened and some days even looked puffy! Bloat is a whole other subject. That for me is a result of over indulging on processed food including high sugar foods – chippies, chocolates, sweets, wine, dairy and gluten-all of which are my triggers for slow and disrupted digestion. Our skin is the largest organ involved in removing toxins from our bodies, what our liver or digestive system does not process more than often shows on our skin. These popsicles are for those hot summer days to quench the thirst, cool down, and provide a refreshing and healthy snack. They are filled with tasty flavours that will make your tastebuds do a bit of a dance and hopefully leave you wanting more. They are also a great way to get some fruit nutrition and much needed fibre into the children that don’t like eating fruit as much, but love a tasty popsicle treat. They will possibly be unaware that it is healthy for them and see it as an ice-cream. They are great as a snack or dessert, or to have on a hot day instead of an ice-cream or soft drink. Healthy ice-cream alternative that resembles a sorbet texture.

DALTONS TIPS
Keeping your garden cool in the heat With the warmer weather and sunshine, it’s a pleasure to be outside in the garden! But January can be a real challenge and you will need careful planning and proactive measures to ensure your garden survives the height of summer. Water and mulch are your top weapons to help keep your garden lush, healthy and productive. The best mulch is a form of organic matter that is applied as a layer on top of your soil in your garden, around plants, trees, and especially in pots. Organic mulches aid water retention by hindering water evaporation, keeping the moisture in the soil. Valuable nutrients are also added as mulch breaks down over time. It improves the soil quality and structure by encouraging micro-organisms and worm activity. A thick (50 to 100mm) layer of mulch around your plants will help suppress weeds. This means your plants are not competing for root space and nutrients. When mulching around trees, don’t apply it up to the trunk – think donut shape around the trunk instead. Make sure you mulch new planting areas too as soil left exposed to the hot summer sun will lessen in goodness and have reduced water content. When it comes to watering, regularly check irrigation systems if you have them and make sure all sprinkler heads are operating well and the timer has been set to suit the summer weather. Be regular when watering your garden, little and often is best, avoiding the hottest part of the day when plants are heat stressed. Once a day in the early morning or evening up to three times a week should be plenty, but increase this if the heat is extreme. Some plants, such as roses and trees, require deep watering to encourage deep root development, so apply extra water to those plant types in the early part of the day. Water until it begins to puddle on top of the soil which means the soil has

reached its water-holding capacity. Avoid getting foliage wet as this can promote the spread of disease on plants like tomatoes and roses – aim for the root zone instead. Don’t over water – too much of anything is not good. If there has been plenty of rainfall you will not need to water as regularly. With many plants (trees and shrubs particularly) if they are not watered well and regularly over the hotter summer months, they will stop growing. Check your indoor plants. Increase watering and, if necessary, reposition plants by avoiding placing them too close to
sunny windows. Don’t forget about plants in pots or containers, keep them well watered and remove any weeds. If you apply mulch and maintain a consistent watering regime then you can expect excellent results with continued growth through the hot summer months. This is critical when establishing a new garden as you want plants to grow to maturity as soon as possible. Lawn care
Matt Harris is this month’s winner with the following question: How often does a lawn need to be dethatched? Does it depend on how often it has been aerated using spikey shoes? Or maybe it depends on how often the lawn has been rolled? Just trying to get my lawn looking the best it can be – is a reel mower better than a rotary mower? There is no golden rule on how often you need to dethatch your lawn. It is dependent on how rapid growing and thick the living or dead material is that we term ‘thatch’ (area between the roots and top of grass blades). Some people desire the perfect lawn and dethatch their lawn every spring, although this is not absolutely necessary to achieve a high-quality lawn. Aerating with spiky shoes is very helpful in all lawns, especially in children’s play areas, where areas are infected with moss in winter months, and where the turf turns brown in hot dry summers. The maximum benefit is obtained by aerating your lawn in spring/early summer. Reel mowers are best for lawns that are cut low, where you would like a carpet-like effect. The reel machine makes a very clean cut as it operates with a scissor-like action, as opposed to the whirling blade of a rotary mower. Whatever mower you choose, ensure the blades are kept very sharp and that you are cutting to the correct level (this can change depending on time of year and state of the lawn).

Our living cotton ball multiplies FARMY PRINCESS with DONNA-MARIE LEVER
Well hello 2018! A new year, new ambitions and another opportunity to fine-tune my farming prowess. Unfortunately it hasn’t been the most impressive start to the new year and I can’t even blame this one on lack of rural knowledge. It started about a year ago when the farmer rang (from a paddock far far away) and the conversation went a bit like this … “Do you want a cat?” Me: Ummmmmm ... (thinking well, we already have the preschoolers, two dogs and ... hello ... we live on a farm! There is no shortage of animals here!) Farmer: “Because if we don’t take it, it will die.” Me: “I’ll come over and grab it now.” So we welcomed Lucy into the fold and, to be honest, as a cat lover from way back I loved her mooching around the ranch. Time passed and our little ball of fluff grew and grew and … wait a minute! One day recently we noticed her tummy bulging and she was way more clingy than normal. At that very point it dawned on me that while I had planned to take her to the vet (she arrived with all her jabs and worming up to date) I hadn’t quite gotten around to it. Bugger. Two short weeks later as we were head-

ing away to a wedding in Wellington and about to walk out the door (of course), the farmer yelled out from our daughter’s room that I may want to come down and “see this”. Four tiny balls of fluff were rolling around in the wardrobe – three tabbys and a wee ginger. They were no bigger than balls of lint. Complete and utter disaster. Even a city slicker would have got this one right. The children thought Christmas had come again, the farmer glanced sideways at them, and me, well I was in love! Although not planned, this was the most beautiful wee mistake ever. What a
privilege it has been witnessing these little living cotton balls. I struck a deal with Miss Five – she could keep one, nana got another one as a gift (although granddad is definitely not happy about this), Farmer Penny took the ginger one, and another friend has the final tabby. Lucy is doing great – an awesome mum and to celebrate she’s having a wee operation sometime very soon! TV reporter, journalist, mum and born and bred Aucklander Donna-Marie Lever talks about life after marrying a farmer and moving to rural Mid Canterbury
