For more than a decade Jenny Shipley was one of New Zealand’s best known faces; she was our MP and she earned the distinction of becoming New Zealand’s first female prime minister. Ten years ago she retired from politics and built a new career as a business woman, ambassador and political mentor. She talks to reporter Sue Newman about moving on, moving up and building a new life.

eet Jenny Shipley today and at first glance she’s barely recognisable as the woman who broke new ground as New Zealand’s first woman prime minister. Talk to Jenny for a few minutes and she’s instantly recognisable. She’s still Jenny. Yes, she might have shed more than a few kilos but the energy, drive, charisma and passion of the old Jenny haven’t disappeared. She might no longer be public figure number one, but she’s still a powerhouse of energy and ideas, still the fluent, expressive speaker, still a person who is clearly not someone to mess

Recently Jenny and husband Burton stopped off in Ashburton to visit old haunts and to help long-time friends Catherine and Alan Trott host the launch of Alan’s book from Pasture to Paradise, the story of Trott’s Gardens. She was clearly happy to be back in her old patch, but she was just as clear about the things that had changed in her life since she last lived here. After a 20-year stint in politics, in the 10 years since her political retirement, Jenny Shipley has moved on and she’s moved up. Yes, she’s still interested in politics, still peripherally involved and still counts many of her

former colleagues as friends, but her life today is played out on a very different stage. She might have exited the cut-throat world of politics in 2002 with a huge portfolio of achievements and her health in tatters, but that didn’t mean she was ready to slow down. In the past 10 years she’s carved out a new life and a new career that have used every one of the skills she learned as a politician. If her early years laid the foundation for the woman she is today and her political career was built on that foundation, it is the last 10 years that have provided Jenny with some of her greatest challenges and richest rewards.

Before she could embark on a new career, she was forced to deal with a health issue that could have killed her. In spite of being from a family that is genetically predisposed towards heart conditions, Jenny says she believed she was bullet proof. In 2002 the warning signs were there that a heart attack was imminent. With husband Burton she was preparing for an official engagement. She felt unwell but chose to ignore the aches and the nausea. Fortunately Burton didn’t. He called a doctor and rushed her to hospital. • Continued next page

y Shipley – LIFE after She’d followed the family pattern of a heart attack in her 50s. Her father died of a heart attack at 52. That was a defining moment. Jenny had two choices – continue as she was and buy into an early death or make some substantial changes. She chose the latter course and admits that was much harder than she anticipated. “I was tired, really tired, but if we’d won the 1999 election I’d have loved another term. We didn’t and by 2002 I was ready to retire.” Her health was a big contributor in her decision to retire from politics and for a year she admits she was very kind to herself, giving her body time to heal. “Today my heart is fine, but it’s something I have to live with every day. I try to stay fit and to manage my weight. I walk a fair bit and I know I’m in better health when I walk than when I don’t.” Living in Auckland she has easy access to the sea and swims whenever she can. The cold water, however is a real disincentive. “Diet’s an ongoing challenge, but I’m in a much better space now. I realise that I live in my own skin and I’ve had to make changes.” She’s had to grapple with both a heart condition and diabetes, but neither has stopped her building an international career as a business mentor, speaker, philanthropist and adviser. Politics seems like forever ago, but Jenny

says several of the projects she’s involved in run on the edge of politics. And that’s often an advantage – she knows where to go, who to talk to and what to expect. “I went into politics caring about the lives of people; wanting to make them better and easier and I still do and I’m still trying to do this with my international work.” She travels to China every two months for business and says it has been a remarkable experience watching that country’s economy grow and transform itself at speed. “They are very driven and things are changing so quickly. I do a lot of speaking in China at conferences. In China if they don’t know how to do things, they unashamedly hunt down knowledge all over the world.” And that hunt for knowledge sees China with many of its boards of directors having a truly international flavour, something New Zealand could learn from, she said. “China is a place we should all be mindful of. We can teach other and learn from each other.” Today her life is still very busy, but she can now build in time for herself. “It’s a different life. This year I turn 60 and I’ve got nothing to complain about. Burtie and I love each other dearly and being a grandma is a very special place to be in and I love watching my children Ben and Anna as parents.

Now I’m just Jenny Shipley, it’s a great space to be in.” That doesn’t mean she has any thoughts of retirement, it’s not a concept she understands. “Our parents raised us girls to be leaders. I’m good at developing teams and I spend my days making sure things happen, finding the right people to do things. I get up in the morning and think, ‘what needs to be done today?’.” Change is not something to be feared, it’s something to be embraced, she said. “If you continue to stick with the status quo that means you’re always going backwards.” Over her years as a politician, Jenny said she had developed a set of skills she was continuing to develop and these could be applied over many fields. Seeing New Zealand grow and develop continued to motivate her, she said. “I’m still very driven by the idea that New Zealand really needs a number of large companies. Fonterra is 25 per cent of our economy; we really need another 10 of these. If I can help companies grow, this is what I’d like to be doing over the next 10 years.” Perhaps the one change that has come postpolitics, is that Jenny now spends more time thinking about what she wants to do with her business life and private life rather than being forced to juggle public and private demands. • Continued over page

One commitment she and Burton makes every year, however, is travelling to Namibia to spend time working with her school trust. This was established after she featured on an Intrepid Journey programme to that country. It stole her heart, touched her soul. During the year she raises money for the trust and watching the difference that money has on education in Namibia was heartwarming, she said. Spending time there had helped her realise that the country was more than conflict and turmoil. It was a country that was rich in minerals and one that, like much of Africa, was beginning to grow and develop at pace. For Burton and Jenny, the time they spend in Namibia is a learning experience on many fronts. “You think you know what rich is, but these people are lucky sometimes to have one meal a day and they live in poverty. But they’ll tell

you that you’re poor unless you have the things they value – land, cattle and family.” She also plays a philanthropic role with the Sir Edmund Hillary Trust, encouraging big corporates to give money that will allow city children to experience rural life. Work with the Club of Madrid is ongoing. This organisation is made up of 86 former prime ministers and leaders who work globally with emerging leaders. In her role with the club Jenny has worked in several Middle Eastern countries. “It’s extremely rewarding work. Often those leaders will just want to sit with a former leader privately and talk and ask them how they dealt with situations, because you know what the torch is like on your backside when things are flying to pieces.” Living in Auckland affords Burton and Jenny a degree of anonymity they could never have had in Canterbury or Wellington.

“It’s lovely living somewhere where I can be completely ordinary, where I can just go out for coffee with Burton. When you’ve been prime minister, you realise you can still cast a large shadow.” She keeps that shadow well away from the current crop of politicians, but says she’ll occasionally send a text of support to someone who’s going through a politically tough patch. Burton has his own work with Basketball New Zealand and a trust that’s working to raise the awareness of the dangers of P, but they also work together. The international nature of Jenny’s business and philanthropic commitments mean she needs to run a global clock, but there are times, particularly during the summer, when she says NO. “At Christmas and in January there isn’t enough money to get me off-shore. The New Zealand summer is about family time and we

will always be found at some beach or other just being New Zealanders.” There are things she misses from the past and rural life is one. With a large part of their early years spent as farmers, Jenny said she and Burton can still drive back into mid and central Canterbury and feel themselves becoming “rural” again. ‘You never lose that interest in farming and I’m still very connected to a number of people and a number of companies that are still in heartland New Zealand. This is all part of who I am. “Growing up, I know our children had the best of rural New Zealand.” She admits she can still play hardball if she has to, but today she chooses who and what she gives her time and energies to. “They have to matter to me now. I’ve worked hard so I can make choices in my life in an intelligent way.”

He enjoys fishing, but after a stroke about five years ago concentrates instead on talking to others at the Hakatere lagoon, river bank and sea side about their catches. The beach was busy lately with a good whitebaiting season.

orth Islander Raewyn Chamberlain and husband Stuart moved to the Hakatere Huts about seven years ago. The 66-year-old said the couple had fallen in love with both the area and their house-to-be while visiting a friend. They were on a tour of the South Island and popped into Hakatere to plan a summer fishing holiday. Chatting to their friend, they realised they liked his bach. “He had just put up a ‘For Sale’ sign on the end of the house, two hours later he took it down,” Raewyn said. The couple bought it and have since extended it, keeping its fisherman’s bach feel. “We just want to keep that ambience of what it was,” she said. It has its original coloured stripy carpet and bare rimu tongue and groove walls. They have mounted vintage fishing rods on the ceiling, while fishing and other paintings and pictures adorn the walls, retaining a warm cottagy feel. “It sort of wraps itself around you and makes

Hakatere He had tried to teach Raewyn how to fly fish, but she said she had “no co-ordination, I would probably fall in the water”. Raewyn said grandchildren in the North Island came to visit often. She and Stuart loved being in the South Island where people were much friendlier, and the scenery was beautiful. Going for a half hour walk at Hakatere generally turned into an-hour-and-a-half by the time they stopped to talk to neighbours and friends on the way. “It’s like a whole new different country actually, we particularly love Ashburton. It’s a good

town, it’s got everything we need. We don’t need to go to Christchurch for anything, except to get on a plane to fly out on holiday.” They recently returned from a holiday to the Sunshine Coast. Living at Hakatere was a lifestyle choice for more than half of the occupants of the settlement’s 54 baches. Thirty are permanently occupied. The bach-holders own their homes but the land is owned by an incorporated society. Pet dogs are against the rules, but there are plenty of pet cats. One of those is Specs the tortoiseshell who belongs to Raewyn and Stuart’s neighbour. She gets sent home each day at 5pm after spending the day at their house. “She attaches herself to Stuart, she comes in early in the morning and curls up with him until it’s time to get up,” she said. Raewyn and Stuart have a small vegetable patch outside their kitchen, and what they don’t use gets swapped for other vegetables with other residents. Raewyn also likes baking and is an avid reader.

New Caledonian family finds its place in the sun by Sam Morton

A

rriving in Ashburton armed with fewer than than five English words, Francoise Belpadrome never imagined she would be speaking good English and enjoying life away from her homeland across the ditch three years on. Francoise, who was born and raised in New Caledonia, moved to the district with her husband Alain and their youngest son Jordan – now 17. Shifting to New Zealand with no knowledge of the country, Francoise and her family didn’t know what to expect. However, after months of touring the centre of the South Island and leaving the option open to Jordan – the teenager made his decision clear. He immediately liked the place and is now gearing up for his final year at Ashburton College next year – and aspires to join the New

Zealand Army – visa permitting. Meanwhile, Francoise has been working hard to gain her qualifications in English working out of the college’s English for Speakers of Other Languages department. It has been a hefty challenge, but one that Francoise was fully prepared for and a path that she wants to walk right to the end – having picked up two levels. “I want to be fluent, I try really hard with my English and I am getting much better. “I still have little trouble listening and understanding some English, but speaking, reading and writing it is a little easier for me,” she said. However, Francoise, who also has family back in New Caledonia, may yet face her biggest obstacle when her student visa expires in March. Unless she can find an offer of employment before March, her dreams of settling in Ashburton may be in jeopardy. “We may have to go home – but we really don’t want to, because Ashburton is our

home now,” she said. “I am very happy to work, but so far I haven’t been able to find anything ... I will keep looking and hope luck is on my side.” Her husband Alain, who is retired, has no job and stays at home to look after the place during the day. His English is limited, but he is in full support of his wife and son Jordan. Francoise, who has been a graphic designer for more than 10 years, has already proved to be a vital figure in the community. Just ask Sue van den Heuvel, who every year organises the popular Multicultural Bite Festival in Ashburton. Mrs van den Heuvel has benefited from the skills of Francoise, who has built a modern

website from scratch in an attempt to further lift the profile of the event – held in February. “We’re very happy with it (the website), we’re all stoked. “Francoise was never afraid to get feedback on the site as she wanted to make it really good and the best it can be. “The website is a fantastic tool for us to get the word out and also to recruit volunteers for the event, so it has been a big challenge for her with English not being her first language, but I have to say she has done an absolutely fabulous job,” Mrs van den Heuvel said. Other activities Francoise enjoys are embroidery and sightseeing in Mid Canterbury. The family also tries to get out to explore the South Island on their weekends, she said.

oney, it’s the perfect food and it’s as close to natural as natural can get. Honey bees have been kept in New Zealand for more than 150 years, with the first honey bees arriving with the English missionaries. The colour and flavour of honey is determined by the nectar it is made from. White clover produces a white honey, valued for its smooth texture and delicate taste. The white blossom of manuka, which grows uncultivated throughout the country,

produces a rich, ambercoloured honey with a strong aromatic flavour. Other honey types come from native trees such as rata, rewarewa and kamahi, or from plants such as vipers bugloss (Echium vulgare) and thyme. Honey is available in its natural runny state, on the comb or creamed and honey of any kind is great as a spread or used in a host of sweet or savoury dishes.

Honey mustard lamb rack 750g lamb rack 5 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 1/2C breadcrumbs 1/2 T of olive oil for the lamb 1 /2 T of honey 1 /2 T of Dijon mustard 1/4 t of sea salt 1/2 t of rosemary, finely chopped 4 large yellow potatoes 1 large sweet potato 1 Spanish onion 1 bulb of garlic 2 T of olive oil for the vegetables

Tamarind and honey dressing 1 t cumin seeds 1 t fennel seeds 2 t tamarind concentrate 2 T hot water 2 t manuka honey 1 T olive oil Salt and pepper – freshly ground – Dry roast seeds and gently crush with a pestle and mortar. Add other ingredients and mix well – Great with vegetables and a winner with fish and chicken.

Honey mustard crusted beef 4 beef fillets (200g each) 2T honey 1T grain mustard 125ml beef stock 75-100g butter, firm 125ml red wine vinegar Freshly ground salt and pepper

– Heat the oven to 180°C – Cut the potatoes and sweet potatoes into 20cm thick chunks – Cut the onion in half and remove the outer layer of skin. – Place 2 Tbsp of olive oil into a baking tray. – Place the vegetables, including the garlic bulb, in the tray and coat them in the oil. – Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake the vegetables on the bottom oven rack for 55 minutes. – After 15 minutes add the chopped garlic, breadcrumbs, 1/2 T of olive oil, rosemary, salt, honey and mustard into a mixing bowl. – Stir well until it forms a paste. – Spread the paste evenly over the lamb rack. – Place lamb in the oven over the vegetables. – This will allow for the drippings to collect with the vegetables. – Cook for a total of 55 minutes.

– Combine honey and mustard – Spread all but 1 teaspoon of the honey mustard over each side of the steaks. – Cook steaks in a hot pan in a oil, on each side. – Remove from pan and put aside in a warm place to rest. – Deglaze pan with stock, red wine vinegar and remaining honey mustard. – Whisk in pan scrapings and reduce by half – Add butter a little at a time to pan and whisk to blend. – Season to taste. Serve immediately over steaks.

Birdseed bars 1 C sesame seeds 1/4 C manuka honey 1/4C sugar 100g butter 1C sultanas 1C chopped nuts 1C coconut 1C sunflower seeds – Heat sesame seeds in a frying pan – Add sunflower seeds, coconut and nuts. Brown lightly – Stir in sultanas – In a pot gently heat butter, honey and sugar

for 7 minutes to form a toffee – Add toasted ingredients and press into buttered tray – Cut while lukewarm and wrap in plastic.

Bacon, blue cheese, fig and spinach salad 12 rashers of bacon 12 dried figs 125g blue cheese 2 large handfuls of baby spinach leaves 1T honey 1T lemon juice 2T olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper – In a fry pan cook the bacon until crispy – Cut the figs into quarters – Wash the spinach leaves, removing any thick stalks – Combine honey, lemon juice, olive oil and salt and pepper in a jar. Shake well – To serve, mix the figs, cheese and spinach in a bowl and toss with the dressing – Divide among 6 plates. – Top with the crispy bacon and serve at once with lightly grilled sourdough bread.

Honey soy stirfried noodles 1 x 440g packet hokkein noodles 1T oil 500g chicken breast fillet, thinly sliced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 150g snow peas, trimmed, sliced 2 medium carrots, julienned 250ml chicken stock 2T soy sauce ¼ C honey 1 ½ T cornflour – Prepare noodles according to directions on packet. Drain – Heat oil in a wok, or large frying pan, over high heat – Cook chicken in 2 batches, until golden brown. Remove and set aside – Add garlic, snow peas and carrots to pan – Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Return chicken to wok with prepared noodles – In a jug or bowl, combine stock, soy sauce, honey and cornflour until well mixed – Pour over noodle mixture, and bring to the boil, stirring – Cook for 2 minutes, stirring, until sauce has thickened and noodles are heated through.
