On Saturday December 15, 2012, Cadet Airman Riley Cowman along with his Springfield Composite Squadron for the Civil Air Patrol laid Christmas wreaths on the graves of soldiers at Camp Butler. This was a local version of the national program Wreaths Across America and was a very moving event. The event began with a ceremony to honor all branches of service past and present and also included those who have served in the USO, Salvation Army, and Red Cross. POWs were also remembered. Senator Sam McCann was present and spoke to the crowds of family, friends, and other visitors at this service. The organizer of the event wanted to make sure that what happened during the Vietnam era did not happen again.
