Clean-up day will be the weekend of May 11 . In the large roll-offs, we will be accepting bigger pieces of garbage such as furniture and other such items that won’t fit in your garbage can. We will not be accepting tires, paint, electronics, vacuum cleaners or batteries. We will have a dumpster specifically for metal. If you have appliances, we will be accepting those but there th is a fee of $7/per item that must be paid prior to 4:30pm on Friday May 10 . You will then be issued a sticker and only those appliances with the sticker will be accepted on Saturday. Once an item is put into a dumpster, it can not be retrieved. “Dumpster Diving” will not be tolerated.

On May 8th, there will be a reception for our out-going Village President, Dave Handy and Treasurer, Alicia Hager to thank them for their 12 years of service. This event will be at 6:30pm before the normally scheduled board meeting. The public is invited and welcome to attend.

If you are in possession of a stray dog, please call the county sheriff’s office (217/452-7718) and ask them to contact Jim Birdsell.

The 4th of July will soon be here and the Pleasant Plains Community Club is gearing up for another Snap, Crackle, Pop fireworks extravaganza. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence from Great Britain with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. We should all celebrate the freedoms America offers us and never take them for granted.

Mark the 4th of July on your calendar and come view the beautiful display to celebrate America’s birthday. Bring lawn chairs to the Pleasant Plains High School and settled in for a wonderful evening lighting up the sky with beautiful colors beginning at dusk. There will be food and drink beginning at 5:30 pm. Ribeyes and hot dogs. Drinks and etc.

ADVENTURE CLUB FAIRMOUNT PARK—COLLINSVILLE, IL On Tuesday, May 14 2013 we will be heading to “Horse Racing in Collinsville”. Come join us for a fun day at the race track. The Cass County Historical and Genealogical Society will have their annual meeting on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at 109 S. Front St., Virgina at 2 p.m. The program will be given by Ralph Irish who works with many different kinds of gourds. He makes musical instruments, rattles, bowls, baskets and many more different items. He has been featured on the PBS program Illinois Stories. This is open to the public, need not be a member to attend. We will have a free will offering and some good refreshments. See you there!

Sicely Nicholas named March Student of the Month at A-C Central Congratulations to Sicely Nicholas for being selected Student of the Month for March at A-C Central High School. Miss Nicholas is the daughter of Sam Nicholas and Linda Nicholas.

Sicely is a leader both in and out of the classroom as evidenced by her involvement in various school activities. She is a member of the Honor Roll, Volleyball team, Softball team, Marching, Concert and Pep Band, STAR, Project 2000, Teen Safe Driving, Bass Fishing Club, and is the Secretary of the Student Council. She also will be a cast member of the Spring Musical “The Wedding Singer”.

Away from school Sicely has volunteered at the Volleyball Kiddie Camp.

Miss Nicholas plans on studying Dental Hygiene but is undecided on the school that she will attend.

WHY CHURCH We do choose. To go or not. If you don’t go OUT just maybe it’s one of these reasons discovered by Willow Creek Community Church: 1) Boring, 2) Irrelevant, 3) Ask for $$$.$$, 4) Too busy, 5) Feel awkward. Let’s add: 6) I’m good enough already and paradoxically, 7) I’m NOT good enough!

Some IN the Church may thing this is a new problem; not so. The 1st century Christians faced the clear danger of physical persecution, imprisonment if they were lucky! It’s no wonder some well away. Today it can be work, a family crises or even ridicule of not being “cool”, etc, etc. Here Ye: The act of attendance IS an act of worship. Simply show up. It encourages others. It puts us in the place of being able to receive The Power of God; to Praise His Name; to hear His Word Proclaimed; to unite in Prayer; to Partner to serve; to Plan for the week and Prepare our final trip to meet Him. He is faithful to those that are faithful to Him. Remember what President Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. Substitute Church for country and we’ll get the point ‘bout right.

Missing worship is a perilous habit. When we deliberately abandon and persistently “pass” on the Christian assembly we are in grave danger of forsaking Christ. He who died so we might live. [Hebrews 10:19-25] 19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a New and Living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, His body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love a nd good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Mr. George Murphy of Jacksonville came and talked on behalf of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) organization. Ashland High School/A-C Central High School Alumni Association It’s that time of year!! Pull out those yearbooks and come join your classmates and friends from high school. We’ll be holding our annual alumni banquet on Saturday, May 25, 2013 in the Pete Gutmann Memorial Gymnasium. This year, we are inviting graduates of A-C Central High School to join us. All alums and teachers of both Ashland High School and A-C Central High School are invited to attend. Classes honored this year will be 1938, 1943, 1948, 1953, 1958, 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013.

It’s going to be a wonderful evening! We’ll have a social hour from 5:00 – 6:00 pm with dinner to follow. Because the silent auction items were such a hit last year, we’ve gathered even more great gifts, certificates and experiences for you to bid on! Just a few of the items available will be a Cardinal baseball experience, a $500 gift certificate to Cedar Creek Resort in Missouri, 2 hours of limo service and many more!

Luther Allen "Luke" Roy (1953 - 2013) Luther Allen "Luke" Roy, 60, of Ashland, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at his residence in LaBelle, Fla. He was born Jan. 20, 1953, in Norfolk County, Va., the son of Lester Allen and Sylvian Edestina Smith Roy. He married Debby Cunningham on Sept. 22, 2012, at Starlite Campers in Jacksonville, and she survives.

He is also survived by his stepmother, Beverly Lloyd; three children, Jimmy (wife, Rhonda) Roy, Lucretia (husband, Jeff) Clark and Tonya Roy (fiancé, Terry Willis); two stepchildren, Krista Blakey and Robert (wife, Aubrey) Blakey; one brother, Michael (wife, Cheryl) Roy; eight sisters, Cynthia "Cindy" Rechner, Debra "Debbie" McGrath (fiancé, Russ Hayes), Leslie (husband, Lannie) Spreitzer, Mary (husband, Jeff) Cromer, Pam Roy, Katie Hakie, Elizabeth "Lizzy" Roy and Sally (husband, Mikie) Dant; 14 grandchildren; and special cousins, Roger and Linda Mahoney, Betty Patterson, and Gary Gabehart. He was preceded in death by his parents; and grandparents, Ed and Maggie Smith and Luther and Katie Simpson.

Mr. Roy was an avid motorcycle rider and a member of the Masons. He also loved to cook and fish.

Cremation rites were accorded.

James “Craig” Little (1961 - 2013)

James "Craig" Little, 52, of Maryville, Tenn., died at his home Friday, March 29, 2013, following a brief battle with cancer.

He was born in Frankfort, Mich., May 20, 1960, the son of Helen Bergschneider Little, a native of Ashland, and the late Russell Little, a native of Winchester. He was married to Karen Lee Lepchezk. They lived in Algonquin before relocating to Maryville, Tenn., in 2010.

James Maurice Murray 1946 - 2013 James Maurice Murray, 1946 – 2013, lost his four year battle with cancer on January 24, 2013 . Mr. Murray had a very successful insurance business in Palos Verdes Estates, CA. He is survived by his four children, Shonaree, Scott, Jamie and Haley. He is also survived by his mother, Ann Murray, a twin brother, Jerry, and another brother Kenny, all originally from Ashland.

Craig attended Frankfort Area Schools where he graduated from Frankfort High School. He attended the University of Hawaii and received a bachelor of arts degree in radio and television from San Francisco State University. He operated Sonoma Video Studio in Santa Rosa, Calif., following graduation. He later moved to Schaumburg, where he was the director of Centers for Information Management for the American Veterinary Medical Association until moving to Maryville to establish Home Video Studio - Maryville in 2009.

He is survived by his wife; and one daughter, Amanda Nicole Little. He also is survived by his mother, Helen Little of Bennington, Vt.; brother, Eric Little of Guangzhou, China; sister, Lynn (Peter) Green of Bennington, Vt.; sisters-in-law, Laura (George) Williams of Nashville, Tenn., Cindy (Steven) Walker of Marengo and Sonia Endara de Little of Guangzhou, China; niece, Maria Elena Little Endara; and nephews, Aiden Green and Chris and Tim Walker. He leaves a large family of cousins, aunts and uncles in the Jacksonville area.
