SCHOOL CONSOLIDATION I have received many calls concerning A-C’s possible consolidation with a neighboring district. I feel strongly that any idea of consolidation at this time is a mistake, not only for the district but for both the villages of Ashland and Chandlerville. The main reasons a district considers consolidation are because school districts are having financial difficulties, declining enrollment, inability to achieve academic standards, and maintaining quality teachers. At this time, using these criteria A-C Central school district does not have a reason to consolidate. In October, the certified auditors for the district rated our school 3.7 out of 4 on financial soundness. The school district is not on the financial watch list. There has been a concerted effort by the board, administration and teachers to cut costs, increase revenue and achieve financial stability. A-C’s enrollment has not declined. The consolidated unit enrollment report for August 2010 was 503 students. The report for August 2011 was 524 students. This represents pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. A-C Central high school was named in the Top 100 in the state by the Chicago Sun Times for the 2010-2011 school year. The high school received an Academic Achievement Award for the 2nd year in a row. A-C Central was recently ranked 133 out of 669 schools in regard to the ACT test scores. The academic awards and achievements earned in the last two years speak highly of our faculty and students. The board recently signed a three year contract with the teacher’s union. There were increases to all staff for each of the three years. The ability to retain and attract qualified personnel is a struggle for many small rural districts. The commitment is there to maintain quality staff. A goal of all schools is to have a first-rate curriculum. This can be difficult to achieve with diminishing resources. Technology will have a role in solving this problem in the future. This is something all the parties involved are constantly trying to improve. In the last two years the school district has spent close to 2 million dollars on the facilities in Ashland and Chandlerville. Roofing, heating and air conditioning are some of the items that have been repaired or replaced. The A-C school district spent approximately 200,000.00 dollars on new computers. The tax payers of the district have paid a higher tax rate than neighboring districts to help fund and improve the district. The business and community residents have aided this district when the need arises. I am not ready to subjugate responsibility to another district when the Ashland and Chandlerville communities have shown such support for the district. Some say we are not looking to the future. A future hypothetical scenario is the school consolidates. In a couple of years the state either mandates or cuts funding and the buildings in Chandlerville and Ashland have to be closed. What young couples are going to move to these villages without an educational center? Businesses close down, home values go down and you have a ghost town. In the future, diminishing state aid or regulations might force us to consider consolidation. The district is not in that position now. Written by: Scot Atwood In Agreement With: V. Todd Jokisch, J.R. Blair, Louis Jokisch, Harold Showalter, Don Parsons and Ron Aggertt.

President Scot Atwood stated, that schools across the nation are faced with increasing demands and diminishing resources and we have seen an explosion in foundations created to assist their local schools. This project has been in the planning stages for the last year and we as a board would like to thank West Central bank of Ashland for Donating $2500.00 to the Foundation. It is because of their generous donation that we were able to get this project off the ground. We are committed to seeing a vibrant and financially secure education environment in the A-C Central School district. The Village of Ashland has a new clerk after the Board made a hiring move at their regular December meeting. Ashland resident Vanessa Doellman was hired as Assistant Village Clerk with an eye towards eventual replacement of Kitty Mau as the Village Clerk. Vanessa, an Ashland resident for the past two years, previously lived in Williamsville with her husband and 2 sons. With winter here and snow on its way, it was discussed at the regular Board of Trustee meeting on December 14, 2011, to ask citizens to contact the Village Office (476-3317) if they have a medical condition that would require them to travel on days with heavy snow fall. Village employee(s) will clear your driveway so you can be sure and make any appointments you may have. If you are homebound during the winter months, please give your family members the Village Hall telephone number so they can call and request a member of the police department to check on you if they have cause for alarm. Also, if you have a neighbor or friend you would like someone to check on, do not hesitate to call. Let’s all work together to help one another and be safe during the winter months. Christmas Tree Disposal – Take your Christmas tree to the east side of the fire house by January 15, 2012. If you haven’t already paid, dog tag renewals are due. The cost, per dog, is $5.00 for a renewal or $7.50 for a tag and registration. Your payment can be made at the Village Office or Cass Veterinary Service-Ashland. If you see a street light out, call the Village office (217/476-3317) and we will contact CIPS for repair. The Village, again this year, had their annual Christmas Decoration contest. Judging of Christmas decorations was done the evening of December 17, 2011 at 7:00 pm. CONGRATULATIONS go out to Richie & Janet Smock at 417 N. Yates for being this years winners! Little did anyone suspect that 33 years later, he would be mounting the 50th anniversary production of the play on Broadway with the playwright, Arthur Miller. But back then, the Ashland librarian was so concerned about Falls straying into the adult section of the library to read serious plays while most boys were out playing sports that she spoke to his parents about it. Now artistic director of the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Falls has directed many classic dramas to great acclaim during his 34-year career. Quite a few have gone on to play New York and London, collecting Tony Awards as well as other accolades. In 1999, he was recruited to rescue Elton John’s musical “Aida” and transformed it into a Tony-winner with a four-year run in New York. His latest play, “Red,” opened at the Goodman to critical raves in October, and he’ll be directing “The ROBERT FALLS Iceman Cometh” starring Nathan Lane and Brian Dennehy in the Age: 57 spring.
