The Christmas Light contest was a huge success. Thank you to everyone in our community for their festive displays. With so many wonderful decorations, it was a challenge deciding on the winners. First prize went to Carrie Grieme with honorable mentions going to Robin Waters, James & Wendy Prater, Richie & Janet Smock, Rita & Tom Devlin, Marc & Stephanie Lindsey, Bob & Phyllis Sutphin, Marshall Jokisch and Lindsay Parks. Congratulations. We have received bids for the supplier for Ashland’s electrical aggregation program. The company with the lowest bid is First Energy of Ohio Valley. Their bid is 4.194 cents per kilowatt and the term is for 3 years. The estimated savings for a household using 850 to 950 kilowatts per month would be approximately $135 to $150 per year. You will not be asked to sign up for electrical aggregation but rather given the option to opt out. You will receive a notice on Village letterhead and another letter from Ameren discussing opting out of the program. If you want to be part of the electrical aggregation program, you do not need to do anything. There was a company going door to door in other communities misrepresenting themselves as a way to sign up for electrical aggregation. Their contract has financial penalties involved to discontinue it and they are NOT actually signing people up for electrical aggregation. If you are in possession of a stray dog, please call the county sheriff’s office (217/452-7718) and ask them to contact Jim Birdsell. If you see a street light out, call the Village office (217/476-3317) and we will contact Ameren CIPS for repair.

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree where art thou Christmas tree? On the corner of Yates and Editor of course, on the empty lot across from the Municipal Building. It seems a small town called Ashland was looking for some Christmas cheer when a very nice lady named Bernice Mileur said I have a large tree I no longer need. I will give it to the Village of Ashland, it will look pretty there. So some special “Elves” were contacted, and to work they all went, they set up the big tree and decorated it just so. They added the lights so glowing and bright and was heard to exclaim, “we want it to be seen all through the night!” They added a sleight and eight tiny reindeer, and all who saw it were filled with good cheer. As town folks drove by they were heard to exclaim, “Christmas has come to Ashland so glowing and bright”, “Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!” Thank You Bernice! “The Day We’re Living In” Don’t think that it’s unusual To see things such as these It’s all Bible fulfillment Our very lives are under seize. There’s trouble on every hand Like there has never been Circumstance is not the blame, It’s the day we’re living in.
Simply “Alneta”
Life is so uncertain With so many enemies We’re losing friends and family By murder and disease. The workplace is a target Our nerves are wearing thin Satan’s working overtime In the day we’re living in.

Lawlessness has overtaken So the criminals go free Honest men don’t have a chance And are among the minority. Good morlas have diminished Cause we’ve let our standards down And anymore, there’s no such thing As “A peaceful little town.” With the “decline of the family” Our children are untrained Since the Bible is not opened The truth is unexplained. Their innocence is vunerable So easily overpowered They wind up in a lion’s den Where they are quickly devoured. So finally we ask ourselves “Where have we gone wrong?” The only honest answer is, “We’ve denied our GOD too long.” Our world is in an awful shape All because of “sin” We sure do need a “Savior” In the day we’re living in. The Bible says, “Save yourselves” “From this untoward generation” Keep your eyes upon the Lord Seek out your soul’s Salvation The Devil’s on a rampage There’s fear throughout the land And in the day we’re living in, Who will be able to stand! © 1994
