“We’re Back!” Yes, Berea Christian Church‘s annual fundraiser is back in business, hoping to share fellowship and good eats with our loyal supporters and new friends.

The public may have noticed a lot of work taking place at Ashland Library Building. The library building has been around for a long time and needed both some structural and cosmetic work. It had some leakage problems. In the past year several improvements have taken place. The building has received new plumbing and a new hot water heater. A rail has been installed inside the sloped entrance to the building, to assist our less mobile patrons. Both exterior and interior repairs of the south wall have also occurred. Sealant was applied, roof repaired and corner tuck pointing installed. A new surface on the underside of the front overhang has also taken place, repair of the outside lighting, including the light that shines on the flag pole. We also have a new sign on the front of the building. The Board & Staff thank you for pardoning our mess as we continue repairs inside & out.

February 2011 Relationship vs. Rule Friends, Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29 When Jesus spoke to people, He often used parables that incorporated familiar everyday situations so His listeners could better identify with the spiritual principles He wanted to share.

In Jesus’ day, a yoke had two distinct meanings. The first was the wooden harness used to link oxen together to plow a field. The second was a slang term referring to Jewish laws and traditions. The Jewish people were burdened by trying to be yoked to the Ten Commandments, as well as the numerous additional laws dictated by their religious leaders. Trying to follow that many rules would be exhausting for anyone. So Jesus let it be known that relationship – not rule following is the key to obedience. The relationship you are seeking should be with Jesus.

When you choose that relationship with Jesus, you then want to follow the Ten Commandments because Jesus is your loving example to do so.

The important words here are have to and want to. If you choose no relationship with Jesus, you feel like you have to follow the Ten Commandments to get to heaven, this is the burden.

When you choose that relationship with Jesus, you then want to be obedient to God and it becomes a privilege to please Him. The rest Jesus offers is a quiet strength and companionship that helps you continue moving forward without burning out physically, mentally, or emotionally. Walking side by side with the world’s greatest teacher, sharing your load, is a journey that leads to joy.

When times are difficult, picture Jesus walking beside you as a reminder that you are not alone. Pray to him honestly about the help you need and He will support you and ease your daily burdens.

Ashland Baptist Church News A big THANK YOU to all who had any part in the 125th Anniversary Celebration of the Baptist Church. The turn-out for all the activities was superb—the help and support of the entire community was wonderful.

ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING The annual business meeting of the Baptist Church will be Sunday, Feb., 6.

A potluck dinner will follow the morning service and the meeting will start around 1:00 pm. All members of the church are urged to attend.

World Day of Prayer 2011 Women, men and children in more than 170 countries and regions will celebrate World Day of Prayer, Friday, March 4, 2011. The women of Chile have written the service around the theme How many loaves have you? They Ask us to enter a process that draws us into the Bible, into the context of Chile and into the real situations of our lives and communities. Together, we are asked to respond to what we have and how we can share it with others. In this past year, Chile has been challenged by a devastating earthquake and the collapse of a mine in which many miners were trapped. Again we are reminded to share our bread and to receive the bread that is shared with us. On March 4, 2011, let us reach out our hands and hearts to touch the lives of sisters and brothers in Chile and around the world.

This year‘s service will begin with lunch at noon followed by the service at 1:00 pm on Friday, March 4, 2011. It will be held at the Ashland United Methodist Church.

Come join the women of Chile in prayer and song to support women‘s ecumenical ministries toward justice, peace, healing and wholeness.

Colleen Morrow celebrated her 98th birthday on December 29, 2010 at Walker Nursing Home in Virginia, IL. Colleen formerly resided in Pleasant Plains and then in Ashland before becoming a resident of Walkers.

Several family members attended her birthday celebration: Phyllis Stevens, daughter, Eunice Watkins, Sister, and Marshall Jokisch, grandson-in-law. Colleen was surprised with a special guest, her great-grandson, Airman Logan Jokisch, who was home on leave for Christmas. Colleen‘s family provided a beautiful pink and white birthday cake for the residents, staff and guests. Everyone enjoyed cake, punch and visiting with one another.

Congratulations to Dan Devlin for being named Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Cross Country Class AA Boy‘s ―Coach of the Year‖.

RECYCLING DUMPSTER CONCERN… We are privileged to have a recycling bin for our use.

I do not know why people abuse it.

If you take your things to be recycled and the bins are full, the kind and right thing to do is to take them back home—DON‘T PILE IT BY THE TRAILER, come back later and check to see if the bins have been emptied. The Village employees take care of empting the bins as soon as they can, so let‘s not make their job harder by leaving a mess for them.

The Power of Prayer by Edward J. Moretto, Minister, Berea Christian Church Have you ever thought about the power of prayer? Of course you have. Christians are taught about that power from the time they were little ones in Sunday School or Christian Education classes. We are taught to spend much time in prayer. Paul (1 Thessalonians 5:17) tells us to pray “continually.” (NIV).

The King James Version puts it in stronger terms. There we read that we should “pray without ceasing.”

Impossible? Of course, in the strict sense of the words, but you get the picture. The idea is never to give up using the Christian’s secret weapon of prayer. At the same time, praying without ceasing is not that difficult if one views that piece of Pauline advice as to “never give up on the power of prayer.” Paul does not advise that we walk around with our hands folded twenty-four hours a day, eyes closed, deep in “make-the-world-go-away” prayer. We’d walk into walls, trees, and any other obstacle in our paths.

I’m also sure that Paul did not intend for us to do as those preachers who preface their calls to prayer by saying, “Every eye closed, every head bowed, let us pray.” I’d like to think that I can pray (without ceasing) by using every available moment for prayer. What it’s all about is maintaining a clear channel, 24/7, to God Who is my strength, the One from Whom comes my ever-present help. (Psalm 121:1-2) The early Church prayed to be equal to the tasks set out for them. They didn’t pray, “Lord, give me something I can handle!” That’s limiting God. They prayed for the strength, the power, the faith to do whatever God would have them to do. So should we. Ever see a church with problems and having a difficult time solving them? Know why? Churches, because they are made up of people, often try to solve their problems like people do. They try to solve all their difficulties with human resources and human ingenuity. They use board meetings, trustee meetings, and committee meetings. (A camel is a horse designed by a committee.) They talk to themselves (not a good idea) and to one another. They need to talk to God. It’s His Church. Prayer is talking with God. Pray without ceasing.

Eskew Racing Go-Karts Eskew Racing packed up the go-karts and ventured down to DuQuoin, IL on Feb. 22nd to race in the Midwest Indoor Kart Series. It was their first time at that track and boy was it a fast one! Brandon was accompanied by his good friend, Alex Rueter of Winchester for Alex's first time ever on his new gokart. They would both make the feature in Brandon Eskew and Alex Rueter the Jr. Clone class with Brandon finishing 4th in his heat and Alex 5th in his. Mike Myers didn't fare so well on the #22 kart, spinning out on the last lap and having to run the semi. He would not make it out of the semi, finishing 3rd with only the top two moving on to the feature. Brandon finished 7th and Alex 9th in the feature. Not as good as they had hoped, but the boys had a really great time! The A-C Central PTO is gearing up for the annual Family Fun Night event. It will be held on Saturday, March 26th at the Elementary School in Chandlerville. There will be a meal from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. We will have a silent auction and bingo from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. All of the money raised goes directly into the classrooms to benefit the children at A-C Central. We are asking the community members of Ashland and Chandlerville to help support this event by making a monetary donation or by donating a service you would provide. You could make a donation of $5.00 or donate a service that could be auctioned off or awarded to a winner at the event. Examples of services to be donated would include painting a room, cleaning a house, mowing a law, a hair cut, a manicure, snow removal, etc. If any community member is interested in supporting this event, please complete the section below and submit it directly to the A-C Central Elementary Office, Attn: PTO, 191 South Bluff Street, Chandlerville, IL 62677. Remember when sledding in Ashland was a popular sport? Most of the children and a few intrepid parents would venture down the only hill in Ashland.

Brave mothers and a few fathers would pull the sleds with their offspring onboard to the hill. The Old Grade School Hill was alive with screaming kids, yelling parents and a parent guarding the street crossing at the bottom of the hill. If we were lucky someone would barricade the streets so we could fly through the intersection at breakneck speed!

Often a small ―campfire‖ was started on a vacant property close by. Everyone warmed by the fire and dried their mittens.

Some mothers would bring a thermos of hot chocolate that we all shared using the same cup as this was before Styrofoam was invented. No one seemed to suffer any ill effects from sharing since we all had the same germs anyway!

After a hard day on the slopes would go home tired, cold, a bit damp and happy. The Radio Flyer sleds would be left in the front yard ready for the next trip. No sleds were stolen and no lawsuits were filed due to the occasional collision on the hill.

Thank you Moms and Dads and my town for happy memories.

Students and Teacher Thankful for Funding The middle school students and math teacher, Carrie Jo Donnan, from A-C Central would like to thank the following businesses for their contributions toward the purchase of a new Promethean Board and document camera in our math classroom. Cargill provided the opportunity and funded the project by donating $2,000. Other contributors included: West Central Bank of Ashland, Brandt Consolidated of Springfield and Petefish, Skiles & Co. Bank of Chandlerville.

We have already started using the board and are enjoying many benefits. Teaching and learning using the Promethean Board allows us to reach a new level of understanding because of the different learning styles of the students. It engages students in active learning and makes them excited about learning math. Thanks again for the funding and for this wonderful opportunity!

CASS COUNTY SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION ESSAY WINNERS The 6th grade science classes participated in the Cass County Soil and Water Conservation Essay contest. Christian Warden won first place for AC Central Jr. High and Cass County. She will be invited to attend a banquet to read her essay.
