The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math classes and teachers at A-C Central participated in a bracket contest for the NCAA tournament. There was a winner for each class for the men's and women's bracket. The winners were: Brandon Pena, Zach Kays, Kaleb Rynders, Abby Lester, Jewel Reed, Alex Brue, Tanner Force, Kaylee Preston, Megan Anderson, Robert Mibbs, Kristin Irlam, Rachel Smith, Miss Webster, and Mr. Arthalony. The winners received a candy bar from Mrs. Donnan.
Ashland Community Days Celebration - June 24, 25 & 26 2011 DON'T MISS IT! Be sure to be here when Ashland comes alive for the annual Ashland Summer Days on June 24-26. Of course, the Saturday parade will be a highlight of the weekend, followed by an I.T.P.A. sanctioned tractor pull, which Cowmans tell us has a couple of new classes. Saturday night will find Hip-Bone Sam and his friends on stage, followed by CONFEDERATE RAILROAD, a popular Nashville recording group. Make plans now for the volleyball tournament--get your teams organized--it's only one month away! A-C 7th and 8th Graders Attend Math Contest Twenty A-C Central 7th and 8th graders attended a math competition at Payson Seymour Junior High School on Saturday, April 9th. The competition consists of an individual test and a team test, where the students are divided into teams of five. There were 176 total students competing in the competition (7th and 8th graders combined). In the individual competition with other 7th graders, Cadence Smith finished in 7th place and Alex Brue in 9th place. In addition, the students were given the opportunity to submit an essay prior to the competition about what our world would be like without math. Kendra Escudero won the essay contest and was rewarded with a $100 gift card to Best Buy. The students were entertained with live music and numerous door prizes. Emma Lynn won a wireless mouse, Kendra Escudero won a flash drive and mouse pad, and Brittany Smith won an iPod shuffle. The students had a great day and did a fantastic job of representing A-C Central. What Would our World be Like Without Math? By Kendra Escudero, A-C Central 7th grader When you go to school you‟re enrolled in all the basics, Science, Math, Social Studies, etcetera. But have you ever wondered what it would be like if we didn‟t have one of those subjects? If it hadn‟t ever been discovered? Let‟s take math for instance. What if we didn‟t have it? From the beginning of time there would never have been numbers. We wouldn‟t have calendars, map scales, addition, or subtraction? No sense of time, or money. Imagine what the world would be like; what we wouldn‟t be able to do; the things we wouldn‟t have. Scary, huh? Because we have always had the handy knowledge of numbers, we have taken for granted just how useful math is. To some, math is just another subject in school, learning about times tables, graphing linear equations, and more whether you like it or not. If there was no math there would be one less subject in school to learn about. You think yay, right? Nay, because what about all the things we wouldn‟t know? If we didn‟t have math, modern society would be much different. There would be no alarm clock to wake you up; no calendar to tell you what day it is. You wouldn‟t know your age. (For some people that wouldn‟t be a problem!) You wouldn‟t know what time to go to school, because time, as numbers wouldn‟t exist. If we didn‟t have numbers at least no one would care about how much they weighed, because they wouldn‟t know! If someone were sick and had a fever, you‟d be clueless of how serious their temperature level was. So you‟d never know how serious of a fever they had. A lot of things we do today wouldn‟t be relevant or even exist if arithmetic wasn‟t real. You would have no valuable desire for currency. Speed limit signs would be irrelevant. We‟d be insensible to the population of our community. There‟d be no phone numbers or street numerals to memorize. No one would have to worry about trying to convince the United States to convert to the S.I. System. To say the least, the world would be a dysfunctional and chaotic place without the precious properties of math. As you‟ve already read, our world would be limited on the things we could do, say, think, or create. Until now, I‟ve never really thought of all the horrors of a “nomath” world. So if the question ever arises to you “Where would our world be without math?” I‟m thinking “nowhere good” is a pretty fair guess.

H. A. VOTSMIER RECEIVES AWARD AT VILLAGE BOARD MEETING The Illinois Section American Water Works Association (ISAWWA) recently held its annual public water supply technical conference in Springfield. Each year the association presents awards to individuals that exemplify outstanding performance as well as dedicated years of service to the public water supply profession. This year one of the recipients of the Quarter Century Service Award is H. A. Votsmier, of Ashland, Illinois. This award is presented jointly by the ISAWWA and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The award goes to water professionals that have served in the industry for twenty-five years or longer. Mr. Votsmier‟s career definitely belongs under the “or longer” section. He has served in various positions with the Village of Ashland‟s public water system for over 40 years with much of this time devoted to serving as their certified public water supply operator. In this 40 year period the public water supply industry has seen major changes, particularly in the regulatory requirements that all water systems must meet. Mr. Votsmier was presented with the award at the April 13 meeting of the Ashland village board by ISAWWA Chairman Dennis Ross.

Ashland Community High School 1866-1989 Alumni Associations 125th Annual Banquet - 2011 It is once again time to gather your family, friends and classmates together for the 125th Annual Alumni Banquet. It will be held on Saturday evening May 28 at the Pete Gutmann Gymnasium. There will be a social hour and tours at 6:00 p.m. with a buffet dinner, catered by Masons, at 7:00 p.m. The cost per person is $12.00. The theme is celebrating our 125th year. We are pleased to announce that the Gymnasium in now air conditioned so we can enjoy our banquet in comfort. If you cannot attend the Banquet, please consider purchasing the enclosed 50-50 tickets. A return envelope is enclosed for your convenience. More tickets are available and you do not have to be present to win. Classes being honored are 1936, 1941, 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981 and, 1986. If you are a member of one of these classes, start now to plan your reunion. A-C CENTRAL MARCHING KNIGHTS BAND TO REPRESENT ILLINOIS IN THE NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY PARADE IN WASHINGTON D.C. ON MAY 30TH Band members from A-C Central High School will be hitting the streets again in late April. The Marching Knights will be preparing for their appearance in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington DC. on May 30. The students were selected as the representative from Illinois to perform in the national parade. “It is quite an honor” stated director Kim Webster. The band has chosen a patriotic selection that includes the tunes „My Country Tis of Thee‟, „America the Beautiful‟ and the „Battle Hymn‟ to perform on the streets of Washington D.C. They are also planning to put their own “twist” on the arrangements. Students have been raising funds for two years in order to make this journey. They will depart from Ashland on the evening of May 26 and travel to DC to take in some of the sights prior to the parade. They will also partake in the Concert on The Mall. Start listening for them on the streets soon. The parade is to be covered by ESPN and Fox News Network. A BIG BAND “SENIOR” PROM Williamsville High School Jazz Band and Sociology Class will present a “Senior Prom (for the senior citizens) on Saturday, June 4th at 6:00 pm at the new gymnasium (air-conditioned) at Williamsville Junior High. Many jazz band alumni will return to play, as well as area professional musicians Don Udey, Jane Hartman, Gene Haas, and Steve Thorne. The teachers of these two classes, Dave Pruitt and Dave Carter, will retire in June. Com eenjoy a free evening of fun, food, dancing, and honoring musicians, veterals, and selected seniors who have given so much to “the next generations”. Reservations are not required, but may be made at Williamsville State Bank.
SARAH SMOCK BENEFIT Sarah Smock was diagnosed with severe mouth cancer and is receiving help from neighbors. She received the diagnosis last year and has since undergone major surgery and continues on chemotherapy. The Brotherhood of the Sword Riding Organization is organizing a dice ride for Sarah to raise money to help pay medical bills on May 14th. Founder/President James prater and Vice President Wendy Prater are the parents of Sarah‟s Godson, Wyatt. When they found out Sarah was sick they went into action. This is the first fundraiser that BOSRO has been able to put on. Bosro was founded on the pay it forward principle. We want to help those around us in need. I enjoyed the article about the Ashland Sale barn. Cal Aggertt was quite a guy. He would let us kids who lived uptown play around there. At one time I would say there were 15 to 20 of us in that one block uptown. The Wooldridge‟s– Walt, Junita, Barlo(Bill): the Hinds-Jim, David, P.R., Frankie, Howard,& Harold (they had older brothers): the Hickman‟s-Gladys, Dallas & Dale: The Brunners-Mary, Delores & Rosie Mae: and us Lewis‟s-Jr., Betty, and me...Joan. Linda Sue came later. Cal let Barlo and me box in the ring before the sale started and then passed the hat.. we made a lot of money that day. My sister Betty sold her puppy a couple of Tuesdays because they would give the pup back to her. There was a high bank across the street and they would unload over there with poles, I guess for fence posts and place them like tepees. So you can guess the fun we had playing there. I was born above Jimmy‟s (my folks had a restaurant there) and was two years old when my parents bought the Hotel which they kept and put a coffee shop and barber shop in it. At one time it had a beauty shop too. Dad sold it around 1952 or 53. So a Lot of stories could be told about changes in the sale barn. It was a meeting place bringing many people to town. Congratulations goes out to the cast and crew of the musical “13”. Student performers from A-C Central recently staged a production of this wonderful musical. Performances were held in the gym in Ashland on Saturday April 16 and on Sunday April 17. Both performances were performed to a full house! “The students did a wonderful job” stated director Kim Webster. “It was a fun show to put together!” Members of the cast and crew include: Brandon Smith, Haley Pfaffe, Drew Hoffman, Cody Miller, Fallon Devlin, Lindsay Allan, Ty Kesselring, Austin Fields, Tiffani Homer, Morgan Wessel, Cerys Boston, Allyson Quick, Maggie Allen, Alli Jacobs, Lindsey Cole, Kayla Anderson, Cali Edwards, Lyndzie Pinney, Faith Widdows, Breann Knapp, Sicely Nicholas, Hannah Miller, and Parrish Smith. Crew Members include: Danielle Bright, Carly Abbott, Liz Quick, Josh Dingman, and Courtney Cave. Directors were Kim Webster and Mark Dingman. Staff included Cindy Marr, Jeff Pfaffe and Jennifer Allen. Special thanks goes out to the band boosters for sponsoring the meal and “Master Chef” Brad Wessel!

We also have hardback color yearbooks available for $30.00 for 2007-2010.
