Healing Fractures by Edward J. Moretto, Minister, Berea Christian Church Let’s go back a couple of months to the time of our Ashland/Pleasant Plains community Lenten services. That time always has a special attraction for me. I guess, because I come from a group of churches which in the nineteenth century worked for the restoration of the entire Church to New Testament faith and practices, I’m comfortable with the association of all professing Christians in our community Lenten worship services. There has always been the fascination for some of us that in the days of the early Church the apostle Paul could travel the length of the Christian world and worship with churches of Christians wherever he found them. In some instances these were churches which he himself had founded. That some of these churches, or at least some of the individuals in them, may have disagreed with Paul on some point of opinion (evident in some of his letters) made no difference. Essential doctrine was never compromised even though the card could be played that “your essentials are not my essentials.” What one found was a unity which left no doubt in the mind of an outsider that these Christians “love one another.” As a result, the Church grew.

In our Lenten worship services, six Sunday evening services leading up to a Good Friday service and a Sunrise service on Resurrection (Easter) Sunday, one catches a glimpse of the unity of the early Church. The music may vary from traditional to contemporary, the preaching styles may differ from topical to running commentary to expository, but the common bond in Jesus Christ is clearly evident. The fellowship meals which follow these services are an expression of that bond. We eat together, laugh together, and simply enjoy one another’s company.

This common bond in Christ begs the question, “If we are members of the same body (the Church), and if the body has multiple fractures (denominational divisions), why are we not about the business of healing those fractures?” In John 17:20-26, Jesus prays for the unity of His Church. Christians should all be aware of that prayer. Christians should also be aware of the nature of the Church. Here’s food for thought. If a fractured bone can heal, can the fractured Church, with TLC, do likewise?

On September 15, 201I seven directors were seated on the board of the A-C Central Schools Foundation. The Foundation is classified a SA 501(3Xc) which is a tax-exempt organization under the Internal Revenue Code. Tax exempt status has been granted both for the foundation and its donors. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide financial or other resources in support of the curricular and co-curricular activities of A-C Central Community Unit District #262 and to aid and assist in general the cause of education, extra-curricular and interscholastic programs in the school district. Appointed as officers for the Foundation were Scot Atwood/President, Homer Rieker/VicePresident, Mathew Greer/Treasurer and J.R. Blair as Secretary.

The other board directors seated were V. Todd Jokisch, Milton Edge and Harold Hoagland Jr. An ex-officio member of the board is the current superintendent Rebecca Canty. President Scot Atwood stated, that schools across the nation are faced with increasing demands and diminishing resources and we have seen an explosion in foundations created to assist their local schools. This project has been in the planning stages for the last year and we as a board would like to thank West Central bank of Ashland for Donating $2500.00 to the Foundation.

It is because of their generous donation that we were able to get this project off the ground. We are committed to seeing a vibrant and financially secure education environment in the AC Central School district. We are in the process of contacting alumni, community members, businesses, corporations and anyone who has an interest in helping the school in Ashland and Chandlerville.

NEW EQUIPMENT FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT

This May the Ashland Volunteer Fire Department purchased a mobile air cascade system. This new equipment is used for filling breathing air bottles at the scene of a fire. In the past, another department would be called to refill the empty air bottles, or a firefighter would be sent back to the station to refill them. With this new purchase, all the air needed to fight a fire for both Ashland's department and any assisting departments will be present at the scene. The cost for this equipment was $4,650.00. It was paid wth a grant from Dot Foods in Mt. Sterling for $2,000.00 and memorials left to the fire department. Our community would like to thank both Dot Foods and everyone that has given memorials to the fire department for helping purchase this lifesaving equipment.

ALEC HAGER NAMED STUDENT OF THE MONTH AT A-C CENTRAL Congratulations to Alec Hager for being selected Student – of – the – Month for April at A-C Central High School. Mr. Hager is the son of Ben Hager and Susie Hager of Ashland.

Alec is a leader both in and out of the classroom as evidenced by his involvement in various school activities. He is a member of the Honor Roll, is a Technology Aide and a Broadcasting Aide.

Away from school Alec has volunteered at various blood drives and was heavily involved in the Epilepsy Walk and the Epilepsy Resource Center.

Mr. Hager plans on attending the Benedictine University in Springfield and then transferring to Rockford College, majoring in Psychology.

News & World Report that recognizes them as one of the best high schools in the State of Illinois. In addition, A-C has captured a national distinction. US News awarded 20 gold medals, 51 silver and 84 bronze medals to high schools throughout the state of Illinois. To determine ranking, US News analyzed state assessment performance. After this analysis, determination was made in terms of college readiness in college-level courses.

Press Release May 22, 2012 Eminent Domain Litigation Concluded – Ashland Flood Diversion Project to Commence On May 17, Judge Bobby G. Hardwick, Jr. approved an agreement between the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the heirs of the late Richard Thornley. This agreement settles the three eminent domain lawsuits filed by the IDNR for the purpose of using the 7.807 acres of the Thornley family’s land to divert flood waters around the Village. Also by agreement, the Village of Ashland was allowed to intervene as a party in the lawsuits solely for the purpose of enforcement of the final judgment orders entered by Judge Hardwick.

Pursuant to the settlement and an Intergovernmental Cooperation Agreement between the Village and IDNR, within 180 days the Village will pay to the Cass County Treasurer the agreed compensation for the construction and flowage easements necessary for the Ashland Flood Diversion Project. The parties have entered into a Maintenance Plan, also approved by Judge Hardwick, that allocates responsibility for maintaining the ditches and culverts included in the easements. The Thornley family and the Village will also give reasonable consideration to accommodations that may be necessary for future commercial development on the property adjoining the easement.

Upon payment to the Cass County Treasurer, the agreement allows the IDNR to forward plans to the Illinois Department of Transportation for the bid letting for construction. Monies for the Project construction have already been secured by the State by the sale of bonds.

The Village of Ashland would like to thank the Thornley family for their help in reaching this agreement. The last few months have been especially trying for them, as their mother, Nelle Thornley, declined in health and passed away shortly after her 100th birthday. The Village would also like to thank Gary Barnhart, Special Assistant Attorney General for IDNR. He spearheaded the litigation and was instrumental in negotiating the settlement. Current Village Attorney Tom Veith and former Village Attorney Tom Brannan also toiled many hours on the Village’s behalf. Arlan Juhl, Director of the Office of Water Resources, and Tom Maloney, engineer, as well as many others at the IDNR, deserve special appreciation not only for staying the course with the litigation and Project, but also for their leadership , guidance and technical support through the many issues that arose over the course of time. Current Senator John Sullivan and current Representative Jill Tracy have been very supportive to the Village. Early in the process, the Village was also well represented by former Representatives Art Tenhouse and Raymond Poe, and former Senator Larry Bomke.

Last, but certainly not least, the Village owes a large thank you to the many citizens of Ashland and the Village Trustees who made calls and wrote letters of support as well as letters of heartfelt dismay over their loss of personal property and effects because of the flooding.
