PORTA/AC Football will hold their 2nd annual golf outing Saturday July 9 at Shambolee Golf Course. A shotgun start at at 1 p.m. is planned. Entry for the outing is $60 per person. Entry fee includes 18 holes of golf with cart, 4 drink tickets and dinner. The event will also include door prizes, a silent auction and numerous on the course contests. We would like to thank everyone who attended the PORTA-AC Open House on Thursday Evening. The turnout was outstanding from both AC and PORTA families. The evening was filled with tours of the facilities, which included classrooms, gym, fitness center and Industrial Arts areas. The Athletic Boosters were available and selling PORTA wear and by all accounts had a very fruitful evening. Families had the opportunity to see some of their children in action on the Volleyball court and football field, as camps were in sessions during the Open House hours. Additionally, Parents and players were able to talk with individual coaches in a relaxed atmosphere. At the evening’s end four family full season passes were given away as Door Prizes. We are please to announce the winners were Kent and Laura Keeney, Porscha Stone, Amy Thompson and Kerry Johnston, congratulations.

In general the evening was very positive and a great first step to introducing AC families to their counterparts in PORTA. We look forward to a positive, growing relationship in the future that will benefit the children of both districts.

“Dependent Independence.”

Edward J. Moretto, Minister, Berea Christian Church On July 3, 1776, John Adams wrote these words to his wife Abigail: “The second day of July, 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

He was close; he only missed it by two days. He also had some good suggestions for the celebration. “Solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty,” sounds like a good idea.

Some, however, might seek to nip those in the bud today under the guise of “separation of church and state,” which is not found in the eventual Constitution. Parades, shows, games, etc. might be acceptable, but some would not permit others (in their independence) to celebrate with “guns” or “bonfires.” “Guns kill people,” they say, though I’ve never seen one jump off a gun rack and kill anybody. Bonfires might require a municipal “permit” (a nice way of saying “tax”), said permit itself being an infringement on one’s independence [yet in our great independent nation one does not need a permit to burn the American flag].

In spite of some of our most pernicious restrictions, this country is still the best there is.

For that reason, we celebrate Independence Day. But there is a way in which some celebrate independence which can be even more dangerous than “illegal” fireworks, guns, and bonfires. Note John Adams’ remark concerning “solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.”

Is it possible to carry independence too far? Should we ever be independently dependent? What about dependence on God? What about dependence on God for the very air we breathe? And what about this? Every Sunday, churches across the country and around the world hold services of “solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty,” yet some studies indicate that church attendance is dropping off. Guess who’s absent? It’s not the non-Christian. One wouldn’t expect the non-believer to participate in a “solemn act of devotion.” It’s the professing Christian who is absent!

Much earlier than July, 1776, Jesus sacrificed His life so that the world could be independent of “the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:2) In that sense, every day is a day to celebrate independence from that law, by declaring our dependence on the One Who made that sacrifice. Declaring our dependence on Jesus Christ in life and in solemn acts of worship should be seen as our realization of who we are and Whose we are.

While we’re celebrating our political independence, we ought to take time to celebrate our dependence on our God Who loved the world so much that He gave His onlybegotten Son. We celebrate that dependence every Sunday in thanksgiving and praise.

It takes about an hour or two, one day a week and Ashland does not lack for churches.

I like this quote from the late Tony Snow, former White House press secretary. “If you think that Independence Day is America’s defining holiday, think again. Thanksgiving deserves that title, hands down.” In the life of the Christian, every day is Dependent Independence Day; every day is Thanksgiving Day.

THE RAIN AND SHINE OF ASHLAND DAYS The pride of the city shone brightly on the First Citizens Award Winners on Friday night. Our local firefighters and first responders – both past and present—were honored for all the time and effort they have given to keep us safe. Many of them—some with over 30 years on the department—joined the chief, Jeff DeGeal on stage to receive the award. We ALL offer a big ―WELL DONE‖ to these many wonderful volunteers.

A large number of young ones came out for the Baby and Little Miss and Mister Contests.

The judges had a difficult task, but finally chose these baby winners: Most outgoingWyatt Ratliff; Youngest citizen-Megan Claire Bright; Cutest outfit-Addyson Smock; ShiestTrey Ratcliff; Cutest hair-Ava James; Cutest smile-Colton Buker. Our 2011 Little Miss and Mister were Kalie Taylor and Wesley Creed.

After the contest, many of the youngsters joined the Kesselrings on the basketball court for fun and games. The food vendors appreciated the crowd who enjoyed the variety of good food.

Saturday, the sun shone for the parade, which was well attended. Our thanks to Tammy Eskew for organizing it and Todd Warrick of WJVO for announcing.

The sun didn’t last long, though. A few tractor classes made it before the rains began and the rest of the tractor and truck pull had to be cancelled. Ed Cowman, his family, and friends have taken care of the pull for the past 30 years. We appreciate the effort involved in this, as well as the ground that Judy Cosner so graciously allows us to use each year. The pedal tractor pull went on in fine style under the pavilion. A good crowd watched and cheered on the many classes of young people. Again, we thank all those who were there for the pulls.

Hip-Bone Sam and his blues band were off to a great start, but the storm began and they were shut down. Confederate Railroad had to ―hit the road‖ without sharing any of their music with us. We hope their concert the next day in South Dakota wasn’t a ―wash!!‖

Sunday brought us some sun and one of the biggest car shows we have had in several years.

There were many beautiful cars and a couple of vintage motorcycles to view. Jacksonville Good Time Cruisers and Vintage Iron Riders of Springfield are to be thanked for adding so much to our celebration.

Tracy’s Dance Technics of Jacksonville brought students to our stage for an excellent demonstration of the various kinds of dances and gymnastic routines. Several of her students are from the Ashland area. Thanks to Tracy, these talented young people, and their parents.

Winners of the drawings were: Harry Blakeman, the week-end get-away in St. Louis and Rosa Lema, the 50-50.

Sunday ended with a vesper service at the Ashland Church of Christ.

The Ashland Community Club, which over-sees all these events, thanks all of you who had any part in the week-end. New members and new ideas are always welcome. Call Judy Fulton to be put on the mailing list for the meeting notifications.

Thank you to everyone who helped put the Ashland Celebration together. A special thank you to Harold Allen for donating from his garden shop the beautiful flowers filling the new flower pots. The Sewer Plant is continually experiencing clogged pipes due to ‘products’ being flushed. Despite product packaging that states “flushable”, please do not flush feminine hygiene products or diapers. Also, grease from soap and food builds up in the sewer system and has to be removed. (Please note that deceased goldfish are still flushable: ) Ameren will soon be in Ashland trimming trees that could interfere with electric lines.
