VBS THANK YOU VBS 2011 “Son Harvest County Fair” was a great success thanks to the hard work and co-operation of five of our community churches! We served an average of 60 children each night and had 25-35 student and adult volunteers each night as well. The children‟s Mission Project was local Ashland-Plains Ministerial Association. A total of $337 was raised to be available for local needs. It takes a huge team effort to accomplish such a project as our annual VBS, and that we had!

Volunteers came from First Baptist, United Methodist, Church of Christ, Berea Christian, and St. Augustine Catholic Church. If you helped in any way from preparing and serving meals or snacks, helping with games, crafts or “Crews”, or provided your time, your money, your recycled items or other supplies, and most of all your prayers, please know that you are greatly appreciated!! So many said to me “I can‟t do much”…….but everything matters!!

Special thanks to the following that without their hard work the program would not have happened: Co-Directors Samantha Boston & Diane Nichel, Glenda & Bill Schleyhan and Mindy Gilbreth for amazing crafts, Heather Hays and recreation crew (including the “Carnies”-Norm, Bill, Paul & Gerald) for our Carnival. Special Thanks to Wanda Schutz for sewing vests for them! Also thanks to our Team of Bible Story Tellers: Sally Miller, Alaina Cave, Kim Beckett, Gloria Rhoades, and Diane , our Lepper, to our preschool team Lesley Newell, Robin Pettit and helpers, our snacks team led by Egina Koch and Cindy Smith. We had great music led by Judy Fulton and Leigh Miller and photography and graphics by Julie Hultquist, Mary McHenry and Alana Cave.

Our fabulous skit crew and set design was led by Kris Gardner—What amazing talent and dedication to present God‟s messages in a very unique way! Thanks to the “CAST”: Dan Cuba, Paul Harris, Teagan Smith, Ang Lawraker, and Leigh Miller. Thank you for the presence and support of our Pastors and to the family of Carl Wester. I look forward to our next Community VBS—it‟s amazing what can happen when we work together in God‟s name!!

Methodist Church New Pastor: Pam Hoffman Pastor Pam Hoffman first encountered Jesus Christ as a junior in high school through the ministry of Youth for Christ. Growing up in Peoria, she studied journalism at Bradley University and worked for several years as a reporter in radio and newspapers in Illinois and West Virginia.

She was led to seminary as the result of a growing desire to know God and the scriptures better, receiving degrees from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, MA and Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY. Her experience in seminary awakened a call to preach and teach.

In addition to preaching, Pam has a passion for worship and for providing people with opportunities to deepen their relationship with Jesus through prayer, scripture and solitude. She also is gifted at organization and administration.

In her free time, she loves the outdoors, loves to play golf, read good books and play guitar, Her family includes her parents and brother, all living in southern Florida, as well as a cat who lives with her.

Two of Ashland‟s street stock drivers took to the Mile at the IL State Fair Sportsmen Nationals on Sunday, August 21st. This is Travis‟ third year and Shannon‟s seventh year for this race. They both did an awesome job and came away with great finishes. Shannon finished 4th place and Travis finished 10th place.

The guys say that in addition to it being the most fun ever on a race track, it is a great day spend with their family and friends and appreciate everyone coming out and supporting them. Special thanks to all their sponsors for making it possible.

So, great job Shannon and Travis on another great race! You family and friends are very proud of you!

SECOND SATURDAY Second Saturday begins again September 10th. Remember, Second Saturday is open to any children of the community, age 4— 4th Grade. We meet from 10—2 on the Second Saturday of each month at the Ashland United Methodist Church. Our grannies always provide a great lunch for us, and there is no charge! Parents, this is a great opportunity for you to have some time to yourself for a few hours knowing your child is in a safe, Christian atmosphere where he or she will receive one on one attention and fellowship with other kids and adults. Our schedule usually includes a short devotion / Bible Study, singing, crafts, games and activities, lunch and a snack that sometimes kids can help prepare.

Our theme for September 10 is “Back To The Fair” with a re-visit to our VBS “Son Harvest County Fair”. We hope to see you there!

Ag Class Looking for Donations The A- Central Ag Program is growing again this year. There are nearly forty students enrolled in horticulture classes alone that's nearly 1/3 of the school! Our students in this class will be learning about landscaping, greenhouse production, plant science, gardening and food preservation. Therefore, we need your help securing enough supplies. If you have any canning supplies (jars, lids, bands/rings, etc.) that you are not using we would love to put them to use as we make apple butter and salsa. We will also take any houseplants, cuttings, annuals or perennials you might have as you do you fall yard clean up.

Mrs. Waters is on maternity leave but donations can be dropped off to Jan Kirby at the high school. Thank you for your continued support of our students, agriculture and the FFA.

Mrs. Lucie Dutil Uhland 1965—2011 Lucie Dutil of Granby Québec, passed away on the 16th of August 2011, at the age of 45 at the University Center of Sherbrooke, Fleurimont Hospital.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Uhland; children, Ann-Rose, Rébecca and Nicholas Uhland; her parents, Marie-Rose Tanguay and Gérerd Dutil; her father-in-law Fred Uhland; her sisters and brothers, Jacinthe, René, Jocelyne, Lysa, Claudyne, Isabelle and Michel Dutil; and her sisters-in-law, Ann Uhland-Smith (Wayne Smith), Lynn Christy (Irvy Christy) and Herather Uhland (Nigel Smith); as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society of the Berea Christian Church, Ashland, IL

Susan Edwards Butler (1942 - 2011) Susan Edwards Butler of Albuquerque, NM, a long-time Christian Educator, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 30, 2011 after a brave 4-year struggle against ovarian cancer. Susan is survived by her husband of 30 years, Nathan Butler, formerly of Cromwell; daughters Carin Logue of Atlanta, GA, Christy Bess and husband Scott of Denver, CO; two grandsons Michael and Matthew; siblings Bob Edwards, Mary Sherden, Jane Cutrell, Phyllis Nielsen, Don Edwards, and Dick Edwards of Ashland, IL, and two siblings, Jim Edwards and Carol Rice. Born January 19, 1942 in a farmhouse in Ashland, IL, Susan’s interest in Christian Education began in high school in the 1950s. She loved teaching Sunday school, was President of her Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) group, and received encouragement to consider a career in Christian Ed from her minister.

A memorial service was held at the Cathedral Church of St. John in Albuquerque on Saturday August 20th at 11 A.M. The family requests that donations be made to LOGOS (http://www.thelogosministry.org) or to her husband's international visual-story literature ministry COMIX35 (http://www.comix35.org).

Helen Judith "Judy" Cosner (1931 - 2011) Helen Judith "Judy" Cosner, 79, of Ashland, passed away Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield.

She was born Dec. 29, 1931, in Tallula, the daughter of Herschel Greene and Virginia Mary Sowers Wiggins. She married Jack Wankel in 1950 and later Thomas A. Cosner Jr. in 1977 and he preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 2008.

She is survived by a son, Gerald A. Wankel (wife, Denise) of Chandlerville; two daughters, Virginia Kay DeGroot (husband, Dennis) of Ashland and Patricia S. Hannel (companion, Joe Lowder) of Springfield; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several stepchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Patricia A. Wiggins Nandasher.

Mrs. Cosner was a 1939 graduate of Tallula High School. She worked all of her life and retired in 2002 from Newell Insurance Agency in Ashland after 41 years. She was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church, the Jenny James Circle and United Methodist Women (who awarded her the honor pin for outstanding service in 2002). She was devoted to helping her church, her family and her friends.

Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Thursday, August 18th, at the Ashland United Methodist Church, with burial at Ashland Cemetery. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Ashland United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

David W. Harris (1953 - 2011) David W. Harris, 57, of Ashland died Tuesday, August 2, 2011 as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Springfield.

He was born September 15, 1953 in Springfield; the son of Earnest an Mildred Isley Harris.

He is survived by his mother of Ashland; two sons, Jason Harris of Carbondale and Aaron Harris (wife, Natalie) of Alexander; a daughter, Chelsea Harris of Springfield; five grandchildren, Austin, Kyle, Jozalyn, Zoe, and Challas; three brothers, Paul Harris (wife Marjorie) of Ashland, Charles Harris (wife Jeannie) of Alexander, and Steven Harris of Ashland; a sister, Betty Griffin (husband, Charles) of Ashland; his former wife, Victoria Harris Naill of Yuma, AZ; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father.

Mr. Harris was a 1972 graduate of Ashland High School and served with the US Marine Corps from 1973 to 1976.

He was employed for over 30 years with the Norfolk and Southern Railroad. An avid Harley rider, he was member of A.B.A.T.E.. He enjoyed dancing, singing, and socializing with friends.

Graveside funeral services were held at Ashland Cemetery in Ashland. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Lee Hand (1932 - 2011) Gilbert Lee Hand, 79, of Ashland, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at his residence.

He was born May 24, 1932, in Ashland, the son of James Gilbert "Gib" and Nellie Davis Hand. He married Ethel M. "Pat" Summers on July 21, 1951, in Pleasant Plains, and she survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Rick Hand (wife, Donna) of Ashland and Tom Hand (wife, Debbie) of El Paso; a daughter, Jill Houser (husband, Mark) of Mowequa; 11 grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Mark and Jane Hand; and a sister in infancy.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, August 13th, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Ashland, with burial at Bethel Cemetery, west of Pleasant Plains. Memorial gifts are suggested to the C-A-V EMTs or Ashland Volunteer Fire Department.

JOHN GUTMANN RETIRES FROM B.C.U.S. #15 AFTER 41 YEARS John Gutmann, veteran teacher and coach, has retired after 41 years of service to the Beardstown Community School District.

Gutmann began teaching at Beardstown Jr. High in 1970, where he taught Special Ed for 20 years until 1990. He continued teaching Social Studies at Beardstown Jr. High through the year 2005, and then became the Beardstown Middle School Social Studies teacher in 2005 until his retirement there in 2011.

“Johnny” as his friends knew him began his coaching career at the BHS in 1977 when he coached freshman boys‟ basketball.

Gutmann‟s long list of coaching assignments included Jr. High girls‟ and boys‟ basketball, Jr. High boys‟ football, BHS freshman football, sophomore girls‟ basketball, Jr. and Sr. High cross country, boys‟ Jr. High track and senior high girls‟ track.

Gutmann held the position of C.U.S.D. #15 Athletic Director from 1992 to 2006. He was the driving force behind the Lady Tiger Classic, and is responsible along with Jim Crum in making the LTC the most prestigious girls tournament in the state of Illinois. Gutmann also served as an assistant AD under Robin Lewis during the 2010-11 school year.

When asked what he was going to do during his retirement Gutmann stated, “mow grass until it turns into dirt.” The very best „Johnny‟ in your retirement, you certainly deserve it.

The Cass County Food Pantry extends the love of the community and of Christ to those in need. We provide The Ashland Woman's Club will begin its 2011-2012 boxes of food for more than 300 families in the county year on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, with a program given by John Sheppard entitled, "Thailand and Cam- each month. Summer is a difficult time for the food pantry, donations are low and it can be difficult to find help bodian Adventures". The program will begin at 1:30 packing boxes. But, you can help! Watch for food drives p.m. at the Ashland Baptist Church. Light refreshments will follow the meeting and program. and other opportunities to donate to the food pantry, or create your own opportunity.
